Unreal Tournament Review

Make no mistake - this is it. The best overall FPS experience to be had, bar none.
What's so good about it?
1) Doesn't require much by way of system requirements. If you still have a Voodoo3 with a PII 400 or an K6-2 450, you can play this game, and do it well.
2) More online mods than you shake a modestly sized stick at. Go to Fileplanet, download to your hearts content, and you'll be busy for a very long time.
3) Many modes of game play. Capture the Flag, Assault, Team Deathmatch, Tournament Deathmatch, Last Man Standing, and Domination. I'm partial to CTF myself - Unreal excels in this area. For CTF, no other game comes close to matching Unreal's evenness and tempered play.
4) You can OWN with almost any weapon. Sniper rifles can take off heads even while you're on the run. Rockets, while powerful, are not the end-all weapon like they all in other games. Flak cannons blast flak aroun corners. There's a weapon for almost every situation, and a weapon to thwart THAT weapon as well.
5) A multitude of online servers for every game type. I'm never bored.
6) Completely unexpected modes of gameplay yields the best results. IE - there's a weapon called the "Redeemer". Comparable to a small nuclear device. Kills everything in a 200foot radius. Hard to dodge when one's thrown at you. Imagine playing Capture the Flag with nothing but Redeemers and low gravity? It's a trip, an absolute blast, more fun than a barrel of monkeys. Praise the lord and pass the redeemer.
However, players with dial-up need not apply. Your ping will simply be TOO high.

Unreal Tournament earned Action Game of the Year accolades from Gamespot, CNET Gamecenter, and Amazon.com. While other games matched it for single-player and online multiplayer deathmatch excitement, UT stood out as the best team-based action game of 1999. Players duel with sci-fi weapons in such diverse environments as a rocking pirate ship, an amphibious invasion in World War II, and opposing guard towers atop a wildly spinning asteroid.
Unreal Tournament: Game of the Year Edition includes 70 new maps and three new modes from which to choose. Tactical Ops is a team-play mode, based around two teams--the elite Special Forces and terrorist groups from around the world. Tactical Ops introduces realistic weapons, maps from actual locations, and never-before-seen scenarios. Rocket Arena is classic one-on-one deathmatch combat with all the weapons at your disposal. Chaos features crazy new weapons, such as a broadsword, living proximity mines that yell at your opponent, and even a small black hole.

Delta Force: Task Force Dagger Review

Delta Force: Task Force Dagger
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Delta Force: Task Force Dagger is the next in the line of, so far, 3 other Delta Force games, the last being Land Warrior and the next, Black Hawk Down. All have been created mainly by Novalogic, but this time they are being assisted by Zomebie Studios.
Ok, now to the good stuff! Task Force Dagger is supposed to contain about 30 new weapons, and 25 new missions, but probably one of the coolest features is that you can choose from different types of characters, not just gunner, sniper, cqb, medic, nader, from Land Warrior, but things such as SEALS, Army Rangers, and, of course, Delta Force operatives. The enourmous levels given out by Novalogic and enourmous servers hosting countless numbers of players won't stop in this game either.
The game was planned to be released on May 22nd i believe, but was pushed back until June 26th, and God knows why Amazon but nobody else has it, so it may be better to wait a little while before purchasing the game, because the only real point to buy the game is for the multiplayer ability.
Stats are recorded. Your time in the hill, number of flags captured, kills, shots, everything. That is one awesome feature, and the better your statistics are, the higher you move up in rank. The single player game is the only weakness of the franchise, enemies have never been very smart, and a simple one shot with the pistol in the leg can take an enemy down. More teamwork could be used in the missions as well as other features, but the co-operative mode can be a blast, but can be pretty dull sometimes.
The game comes with a mission editor in which levels can be created by the public and played on Novaworld. That is also an interesting feature that proves to be very beneficial, even though the maps created by Novaworld are also pretty wonderful.
This game has got to be one of the greatest multiplayer marvels of all time, and will give the various Star Wars and other multiplayer games a run for their money, with almost all players that have Land Warrior already hellbent on picking up this next game in the popular series.
The only down side is the single player missions, but users can also create their own, and multiplayer is all you'll really do once you get the game. It's a great game and i recommend you to purchase it.

Delta Force: Xtreme Review

Delta Force: Xtreme
Average Reviews:

Delta Force: XTreme is a re-make of the excellent original "Delta Force", which was released in 1998. They've pulled the best levels out of the original game and ported them over to NovaLogic's latest graphic's engine, along with adding some more levels. And the results are amazing! From the moment I was plopped into Mission one (the same Mission One from the original game), I was in heaven. I hadn't played the game since 98, so the nostalgia I felt was palpable. It was so fun to be able to play through that very familiar level with the superb graphics, which bear a strong resemblance to the FarCry graphics, only with even longer draw-distances. And if you can see a place, you can go there. You can travel for miles out of your way if you want to. Truly open-ended.
I liken the gameplay to Operation Flashpoint. It's pretty difficult and there doesn't appear to be a way to save your game. However, it does give you the option if you are killed, to re-start the level with full ammo and the enemies you've killed already dead. But that felt kinda like cheating. I'd have preferred a save-anywhere scheme, or at the very least, a couple of save points would help. As it is, it's very difficult, which adds to the tension. I kinda actaully like it that way really, since it forces me to be careful, however the option to choose a save scheme would be appreciated for those who can't live without it.
Enemies appear in droves, and come from all over at the sound of gunfire. You're best off to lie down in prone position and try to pick them off. However, I have not yet found a way to get more ammo. There is no manual with this game. One mission I started with 300 rounds, and that's it baby. I couldn't grab more from fallen enemies or find any anywhere. By pure luck, I finished the mission as my ammo meter reached zero. There may be a way to get ammo that I don't know about, but I haven't found it.
I haven't tried multiplayer yet. Though I am greatly looking forward to playing the 25 included co-op levels with my brother over NovaWorld. The last time we did that was when Delta Force: Land Warrior came out, and that was a blast. At the time, we loved NovaWorld. It was stable, and I'm amazed to see it's still around after all these years.
NovaLogic has been around a long time too. They've been making great games since I bought my first computer. Not many game companies are left from that era, and it's a testament to their dedication to all their games, both old and new. Nothing is abandoned. If you're a fan of an old NovaLogic game, there's still help and support on their website for you.

About In-Game Bugs:
To the people who bitch about the bugs in this game: UPDATE IT YOU FOOLS! Goto the game maker's website and download the update. If you can't find it, do a search online for "SWAT 2 Updates" or something. Use Webcrawler.com instead of Google. Webcrawler is a META Search Engine, so what it does is it searches using a bunch of search engines including Google, Ask Jeeves, Yahoo, Altavista, etc etc and filters out the best results. Plus, it's been around alot longer than Google and doesn't contain any spyware unlike Google.
Anyway, back to the game. This is a classic game and continues in the tradition of Police Quest. The legacy continues even today with the popular hit SWAT 4 and the new SWAT 4 Expansion Pack. SWAT 3 was an amazing game and was even named Game of the Year. Infact, there are some elements to SWAT 2 and SWAT 3 that are even better than the current #4 title, such as in SWAT 2 you can play as the Terrorist and in SWAT 3 there was fantastic Multiplayer capability with excellent weapon/map mod/upgrades, as well as better Squad and Communications navigation and layout.
So, if you're into playing classic, fun games, then this is right up your alley. This game isn't old enough to be completely outdated and confusing or incompatible with your computer system.
I recommend buying the Police Quest Collection / Police Quest Compilation as well as this title.

Painkiller: Resurrection Review

Painkiller: Resurrection
Average Reviews:

The original title sported some of the most memorable and dazzling moments I've ever seen in FPS Gaming. I'll admit, I was underwhelmed by the previews of red and black screenshots I saw containing what appeared to be exactly the same druid character models from 2004 in a 2009 title. I overlooked it as a wip, figuring that self-described "Enthusiastic Amateurs" Homegrown Games were too small to market like the big boys of gaming. Pre-ordering this bad boy as a package deal through steam, I figured I had the perfect slasher for Halloween. I found out that if you took the coding modifications made to the original game engine for this title and printed them on paper, I wouldn't wipe my tushie with it.
I'm being as straight as I know how to be in a review: This game sucks. The formula that made the older titles successful has been spread dangerously thin with boring, loosey goosey levels that kill the pacing that made the original title famous. These levels were designed with almost complete and utter disregard for the AI capablities of the characters. It's almost as if the level designers, faced with fancy new level building tools, went hog wild creating super detailed, enormous open levels and then threw in a bunch of enemy spawn points without bothering to test if it was fun, they just assumed the characters would know what to do. Nine times out of ten, an entire horde of enemies can be done away with while standing still with the painkiller, provided you merely place a pebble or a bush between you and them. Compare this type of fighting with the infected from Left 4 Dead, who can literally go wherever YOU can, makes it sad a feels like a lazy move. The enemies themselves now make zero contextual or stylistic sense for being there, because they weren't designed to go with the level themes. The battle-pacing is predictable and flat out awful, often relying on walking into the middle of the room or floor to activate. If you're going to 'WOW' us with recycled weapons and characters, at least give them graphical updates. If you're going to shy away from cg animated cutscenes, and instead opt for so-so graphic novel storyboarding and voice acting that sounds like unprocessed recording studio stock and cram it down our throats, fine. At least show us mercy and let us skip past the intro movie where the pudge faced stinky clod that calls himself a 'world class killer' blows himself up because he can't read a bus schedule.
From a graphical standpoint, the new look is actually a lateral move. There are mistakes here that are simply unforgivable, even for self-described amateurs. One example is the brown, fireball launching brutes, who operate on a badly executed skeletal animation rig that looks like an intern from art school recycled it from his first character project. The skin envelopes created for this character causes it to not only deform inappropriately at low stress angles, but completely fall apart on ragdoll. Things like this detract from the play experience, especially when you notice the heads on these characters all seem to literally SPLIT IN TWO during normal movement because some jerk-wad doesn't know how to mirror his envelopes. Glaring lighting artifacts on maps, low res textures on some close range objects, tiling, stretching, direct x graphical/compatibility noise issues on a fully updated machine, severe clipping issues, physics turned wonky from modification (some of the ragdolls literally EXPLODE and bounce around the level), multiple crashes on high end fully updated machines, and the ability to literally walk through props or off the edge of maps and die. The list goes on. This feels like the first attempt at developing Half-Life before they started over, after Valve realized it wasn't fun and scrapped it.
To be clear, I really love this series! I still play Painkiller to this DAY. However, Resurrection is the 'Halloween 3' of this series. Doesn't really belong or live up to the first titles.

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3 Raven Shield Review

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3 Raven Shield
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This review is based not on the demo but on the retail version of the game, bought yesterday (the day of release, March 18th). I should also mention that I do not play MP so I cannot judge the product from that perspective.
The game is stunning. The development team has risen to the challenge of evolving a classic and the result is breathtaking. Here are the highlights:
The graphical and sound environments are superbly rendered with terrific attention to detail; the result is a truly immersive atmosphere, the indoor equivalent of GHOST RECON. The weapons sound great and real creativity has been applied to the voices and ambient sounds. Highlights visually include superb weapon effects, character models/animation, uniform details, lighting effects and level design.
All of this would be useless without great gameplay, however, and here RS3 really shines, exceeding the high standards set by the earlier versions. Hostile and friendly AI have been revolutionized; bad guys react with some initiative now, they can conduct flanking actions, and they are very responsive to sound, forcing the player to plan routes and choose weapons with care. In the past your teammates were at best spare lives for the player, at worst a liability; no longer. Friendly AI is now good enough to be relied on to enter and clear a room ahead of the player, a huge step forward, and the beautifully thought-through and executed contextual orders menu allows the player to capitalise on these enhanced team AI capabilities. The contribution this makes to gameplay is enormous, as it means you can plan missions which exploit your team's skills rather than compensate for its weaknesses. Only in SWAT 3 has there been such a high standard of user interface combined with superb friendly AI. Other innovations include the ability to open doors and windows gradually and to fine-tune coordination between teams with an on-the-fly go-code called a zulu code. The decision to allow tangoes to surrender is a brilliantly implemented SWAT-type reflex challenge to the player and contributes greatly to tension and realism.
Massively enhanced AI and playability are further refined by greater realism in weapon effects/performance and innovations like thermal sights for the sniper rifles and a very convincing heartbeat sensor. Intelligent improvements have also been made to stance and movement options, which now include a progressive lean/peek feature and the ability to go prone (if there is room).
The only reason I am not giving this 5 stars is that I have not yet played through the entire campaign. Like its predecessors and the GHOST RECON series, however, a game as accomplished as this can only be the result of real talent, commitment and inspiration on the part of the development team. We are fortunate to be able to benefit and the game is worth every penny. It's a classic.

Hunting Unlimited 2011 Review

Hunting Unlimited 2011
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you a fan of Hunting Unlimited 2009, back quickly away from this monstrosity.
Major points of disappointment:
1. No "Free Hunt". You are limited to preset "scenarios" and have no control over the animals encountered. Every scenario in this game is goal oriented.
2. Very few, unrealistic, weapons. Most of which must be unlocked before they can be used. A "Sawed off shotgun" is one of the more powerful weapons and has better range and power ratings than a 30-30 rifle.
3. Animal reaction to your actions has been all but removed. The animals in your area will only react to your shots if you happen to be shooting in their general direction. An animal very near you but out of your perspective range will continue to wander around as if you weren't even there.
4. You can only hear animals if you happen to be facing them. Once you turn to the point where the animal is not in your view, you can no longer hear them. A bear running toward you sounds like someone beating on a timpani and a wolf sounds like someone shuffling papers. The bears and wolves are the only 'dangerous' animals in the game. The moose and elk are as placid as a petting zoo lamb.
5. No more accessories. No bait, no rattles or calls, no 4-wheeler, no horse, no portable stands, etc. Nothing but a bottle of some kind of spray when 'hunting' in stalking mode.
6. "Kill shots" are completely unrealistic. While hunting with a shotgun it is very easy to take down a charging grizzly from well over 200 yards with a single shot. Every time.
7. Actually tracking and stalking the animals is impossible. No tracks are left behind, no sign at all. When in 'stalking' mode, a RADAR screen in the upper left corner shows you exactly where the next target animal is located. All one needs to do is run over there and shoot the animal.
8. All shots are either instant kills or complete misses. No more tracking an injured animal using tracks or blood trails.
9. No need to 'bag and tag' your kills. After shooting an animal it simply falls over, lies there for a few seconds, then disappears.
10. Anything that moves is fair game. No consequences for shooting an illegal animal.
11. *EVERY* animal is a trophy. No more selecting the 'best' from a group and trying to get the drop on them. You see something moving? Shoot it.
12. No shooting range.
Overall this 'game' is a complete waste of time and money. It is nothing more than a shooting gallery game and a MAJOR step backward for ValueSoft. I, for one, am not looking forward to the release of Hunting Unlimited 2012.
Now, excuse me while I go delete this garbage from my computer and go back to playing Hunting Unlimited 2009.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Review

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When it comes to FPS's, and any other shooter for that matter, you have your current kings, namely: Halo, Rainbow Six (and all of it's "spawns", like GRAW) and Gears of War (still). Throw BioShock in there if you want... whatever. You get the point. Now - take from each of those games the best aspects... throw them together, and you have Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.
Simply put - you'll love this game, even if you don't like military or first-person shooters. If you're the type that strictly plays the single-player mode, then I'd rent first, just to be sure it's for you. For me, even the story mode keeps me coming back. This game is a BEAST, and it's a BEAST on every platform it's on - 360, PS3 and PC.
Infinity Ward understands FPS's - their absence was noticed immediately in Call of Duty 3, which sucked. They're back. This game is a few MINOR elements away from absolute perfection, in my opinion. And you don't get better than perfection.
I'll get the little gripes out of the way:
1. No Co-Op campaign. As frantic as every stage is, coupled with the fact that there's really no point on the game where you're not at least with ONE other player - usually more - I thought this should be available. It's pretty much standard now in the next-gen FPS's, but surprisingly absent here. Hmmm...
2. The whole 'friendly-fire' thing... I realize that this is realistic, but it's pretty frustrating sometimes - moreso here than in a game like Rainbow Six, simply because there's no easily identifiable icon or marker. I don't need THAT level of realism in a game - just my opinion. Yes, your recticle is red if it's on an enemy and green for a friendly, but during all of the fighting, that's really hard to see. Coupled with the fact that a lot of the enemies are wearing uniforms pretty similar to YOURS, you may end up accidentally shooting your squad more than you'd care to admit, especially on the Veteran difficulty level.
(That's really it for the 'gripes' - the other is more of an personal preference for me. I'd rather have more gameplay modes available in the multiplayer right off the bat, but I can also see how starting off with just the initial two works.
You may notice that I haven't complained about the duration of the story mode... while short, I doubt that any of the other reviewers that are slamming it have "breezed through in a few hours" on any difficulty higher than Sick Infant - that's before Rookie, if you're wondering. The story is compelling; there are actual moments where your chest and heart actually POUND - tell me the "All Ghillied Up" stage didn't have you holding your breath in real life, I dare you. Other games, while significantly longer, don't always fill their time with substance. A game like BioShock doesn't have an online mode, so it's story HAS to carry it entirely. Halo 3 is longer, sure... but most of it is retracing your steps back through previously played boards. No thank you. Apart from an effective story mode, this game's "bread and butter" is in the online multiplayer. Just like Halo 3. Just like RB6: Vegas. Just like Gears of War. Online play is what will keep this game, and others, being played for years to come.)
...and that's it, folks. Nothing else bad here. AT ALL. Period.
Gameplay - the game is phenomenal. Even if the campaign is rather on the short side (took about 6 or so hours playing on Normal - Veteran or Hardened will probably double that time, plus some) it is undeniably entertaining. While it may not necessarily be breaking new ground as far as plot, it STILL is far more engaging that Rainbow Six: Vegas's campaign mode, which is great, as well as Gears of War and even the mighty Halo 3. (just my opinion) (A+)
Graphics - arguably the best on any console, period. I give it the nod over Gears of War and BioShock - this is the best looking game I have ever played, and it runs (with all the chaos going on) at a smooth 60 frames per second is 1080P HD glory. The word gets thrown around alot with these newer systems, but this game is truly Photo-Realistic. The only thing I've seen comparable would be Crysis, another military shooter -and that's (not surprisingly) a PC-only game at the moment. It absolutely does not get any better than COD4. (A++)
Sound - as good as anything out now. The musical numbers are all spot-on, and the dialogue and combat chatter is phenomenal. Top notch all the way around - no "forced" sounding acting here. This games sounds like it was recorded during actual combat. (A+)
Multiplayer - time will tell if it will stand up to the insanely deep Halo Multiplayer mode, or the ridiculously addictive multiplayer modes on GoW or RB6, but even in this early stage COD4 is more than holding it's own. Choose from a preset variety of classes - sniper, assault, heavy gunner, etc. and get to killing. Kill enough and eventually unlock the ability to create your OWN class - and that's where the fun really gets going. There's a rank structure, but with there being absolutly ZERO offical multiplayer achievements, hopefully this will minimize people's tendency to cheat. (big problem on RB6) Ranking up does have it's privileges, however... different weapons, customizations for those weapons (scopes, skins, etc.) How new players feel about playing months from now when the majority of their combatants have superior equipment remains to be seen... balancing could be an issue there. The way it's set up though, if you're good at FPS's (and you know who you are), you will be alright. There's some work to be done with the team balancing... and I would prefer the ability to choose which maps I play on during ranked matches, but all in all, pretty solid. (A)
Replay Value - extremely high, even with a relatively short campaign. All of the achievements for the game come from the Campaign mode, yet over half of them require you to beat the game on one of the two harder difficulty levels. (not recommended for first-timers - frustration WILL ensue... as well as bullets, grenades and dog bites) Hell, even the TRAINING MODULE is fun and gets replay - Halo can't say that. This game is ridiculous. Even as varied as multiplayer is by nature, the Prestige Mode adds a new level to it. Make it all the way to Level 55, then you have "a tough decision" to make... (A+)
Overall - Dangerously Good. I give it an A+, or a solid 9.9998 out of 10 (I stand by the fact that a co-op campaign would render a potential Call of Duty 5 pointless) This is one of the best games ever. After playing the Beta earlier this year, I proclaimed that this could be a sleeper for Game of the Year, while everyone else was obviously sold on Halo... maybe a few for BioShock. This has them both, hands down. The only surprising part is how convincingly better this game is than the other GOTY frontrunners. All other FPS's (particularly military FPS's) need to take notice - this is BY FAR the best ever. (Note to Tom Clancy and the folks at UbiSoft: you have work to do for that next Rainbow Six. The bar is WAY up there now... don't disappoint)
A definite must own, especially for online players - this is the best for this year. No not Halo - Call of Duty 4. Period. The only thing I see that could pull people away from this even for a moment would potentially be Grand Theft Auto 4.

Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis - Gold Edition Review

Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis - Gold Edition

In my opinion this has to be one of the things that any gamer who even remotely enjoys action/first person shooters must own. This is the most in-depth game ever in this genre. You can fly, drive, snipe, lead, and any other thing any real soldier could. This is the best tactical sim. ever. Also the game has a very in depth story-line, which is one of the best, next to Dues-Ex. I enjoy almost any kind of game, but this is one of my top 3. Probably number 1. The designers are Czech, and they realistically modeled the speech. All of the Russian is pronounced correctly and the statements make sense. This is another game in which you must "stop n' drop" to have a chance in a fire-fight. Also most of the fire-fights go on at long distances, in which the enemy is barely in sight. The weapons are modeled realistically, and there is a huge variety. I always drop the M-16 and grab an ak (more stopping power). Wounds are realistically modeled. There is also a large variety of transports, tanks, copters, and a plane. With the gold upgrade, there are some new things and a new 20 mission campaign.

Homefront Review

Homefront
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A little about my gaming experience, i've been playing PC FPS games since DOOM including Counter-Strike, all the PC Call of Duty games, all the PC Battlefield games, and so many more. I would consider myself a fair reviewer, I even found the 2010 Medal of Honor to have its redeeming qualities despite most others disliking it.
Prior to this games release I saw some promo material such as videos and the interactive website, which were masterfully done, to set the stage for what should have been a great game with an interesting story. Unfortunately, this was not the case.
First off, the graphics seem below par for the genre but are not horrible. The animation seems worse off though, as the way characters movement seem jerky in a way that is obnoxious and an eyesore.
Single-Player:
The game was noticeably short, clocking in at around 5 hours. The characters, environment, and story was surprisingly generic and the ending was an abrupt one that brought no closure. This was done on Normal difficulty by an experienced FPS player, so your mileage my vary. This was by no means an attempt at clearing it in a short time either, this included me dying at several places and reading several of the in-game history documents scattered around. While single-player campaign was surprisingly uninteresting given the great story they had to work with, it wasn't terrible. Even though the majority of it was bland it still had some fun moments.
Multi-Player:
This is the mode that I value the most in any FPS I buy as it is ultimately what I spend the most time playing. Homefront's take on multi-player has it's unique elements, such as aquiring Battle Points (BP) from doing actions such as killing an enemy or capturing an objective. This in-game currency and the only way to get power-ups such as RPGs, vehicles, remote-controlled attack drones, and such. One major issue with this system is that all items that destroy heavy vehicles are BP purchases. If you are stuck with low BP you can very easily be repeatedly killed or spawn camped by a helicopter with no way to destroy it.
The next major issue is sniping, in which the flaws of Homefront being console developed and ported to PC become very apparant. Players can start with a default sniper rifle which is semi-automatic with very little scope sway and recoil. In addition to this, it is a one shot kill to the body with no bullet drop. The combination of all these factors with the large maps makes it a sniping/camping nightmare. There is little skill needed to one shot kill someone from far away, as the sniper rifle has a high rate of fire with fairly low recoil.
There are many other smaller issues that I could go on about, but i'll try and shorten it into the all encompassing idea that Homefront just lacks polish. Everything seems rushed including balance issues and content. What could have been a great game got bogged down by poor implementation of ideas.
Bottom line:
Homefront does not stand up against any other quality FPS. Whether you are a fan of Call of Duty, Battlefield, Counterstrike, or any other FPS, you will probably find this game lacking in the aspect that makes that FPS series your favorite. Unless there is a major overhaul with future patches, I would not recommend this game to any FPS gamer.

Aliens Versus Predator 2 Expansion: Primal Hunt Review

Aliens Versus Predator 2 Expansion: Primal Hunt
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a fan of AVP2 I anxiously awaited the release of the Primal Hunt expansion pack. What a disappointment! Apparently Sierra/Fox/Monolith et al were more interested in their upcoming NOLF2 and contracted this project out. The new company's effort seems to be completely clueless as to what made the original game so great. It's atmosphere and plot, guys -- not simply emptying magazines into onrushing hoards of "aliens." More important than actually shooting are the times when you're sure you going to get jumped any second in a darkened passageway. Little things like unexplained explosions, bodies flying through the air, screams from "somewhere", blips on the motion detector add to a whole scary, beautiful atmosphere. A couple new available weapons (dual pistols, energy fleschette) are unnecessary and a little ridiculous. The additional "monsters" (indiginous life on the planet) could have been a good touch to explain how the "bugs" survive without humans and predators to face-hug and chest burst, but they are poorly realized. (Why don't they fight amoung each other or against the bugs who are their real enemy? They only seem to go after humans and Predators). In short, this expansion pack seems designed by people who had little or no feel for the original game. The graphics are a little better but even this is negated when you see a bug running around chasing his tail while you watch. The Predator missions are slightly better, but only slightly. The "Predalien" levels are a waste of time. There's no purpose behind them other than killing humans and solving puzzles in order to move around the halls. One level (the face hugger) even gives you an incorrect objective. It tells you to find a solitary Predator and do the face hug. What it really means is that you have to find the RIGHT solitary Predator. Any other will give a "mission failed" result -- even though you accomplished the goal. If you played the full AVP2 game, I think you'll know that Rykoff and Eisenberg are not exactly nice people. Primal Hunt has you working for them. There's much more, but I think I've said enough. Too bad, this could have been really good.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein Review

Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Most FPS fans cut their teeth on Castle Wolfenstein back so many years ago. At the time it seemed amazing to be able to walk around in a 'virtual world'. This time around, the graphics still are what impress.
The game is more an interactive movie than a blast-em-up that the original was. The atmosphere, the music, the sound, all work together to draw you into the world of the occult.
You are, of course, in WW2, an American spy caught by the Nazis. The Nazis are trying to unearth an immortal power locked away one thousand years ago in northern Germany. The story is revealed to you with well done cinematics as the game progresses, and in the meantime you have to fight your way through enemies of all shapes in sizes with your trusty knife and guns.
The graphics are of course far superior to the original, and it's impressive to compare the two versions (the original is included with this copy). Back then we thought Wolfenstein had amazing graphics ... and today we feel the same way. There are points from which you can look down at the entire castle complex with all its layers and textures, and then wander down through the castle, looking out every window and door. True, the graphics aren't as crisp as some of the fresh games coming out now, but the improvement is still rather impressive.
The game is definitely a first person shooter, so non-FPS players probably won't be thrilled with it. Also, the game can definitely be trounced by a good FPS player in a matter of weeks. Still, that is just the beginning. You can now take your characters on line and play against other humans in a variety of scenarios. If you think the AI was challenging, wait until you test yourself against other humans who are FPS fans!
Recommended for FPS players who like a compelling storyline and the startling turns of a horror movie.

Frontlines: Fuel of War Review

Frontlines: Fuel of War
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I think re-reading Orwell's 1984 right about now would be a great idea. Because in a true Orwellian fashion FRONTLINES:FUEL OF WAR envisions yet a...newer world order where the US and the EU (Western Coalition, aka "Oceania"?) face off Russia and China (Red Star Alliance, aka "Eastasia"?). It is set in (the no so near I hope) future so new weapons and front-line tactical technology are employed.
This is a fast-paced First Person Shooter built around capturing points and getting territory rewards. It bears great similarities to BATTLEFIELD, yet I felt more like playing COMPANY OF HEROES from a FPS perspective. Various objectives are to be completed in order for the entire battlefield territory to be captured.
The graphics are good, although, not exceptional: CoD4 is much more impressive. The sound was nothing to complain about: your usual battlefield whizzing bullets, staccato automatics and loud explosions.
I really liked the feature which allows soldier and weapons customization - which, in an RPG twist, can get upgraded (up to level 3) as the game progresses. This is a game with a lot going for it. Unfortunately, the story does not end here.

The first star was withheld because of the short duration. FPS games keep getting shorter and shorter but 6-7 hours is way too short even for an expansion, let alone a standalone game! At this rate, in a couple of years, games will not run longer than a movie and will cost ten times a movie ticket.
The second star was withheld because of the weak Single player campaign. The missions were rudimentary designed and, even if there are challenging moments, it was painfully obvious that FRONTLINES is a game designed mainly as a multiplayer. Now, this is a risky way to set up a game since it depends on the number of onLine participants. If UT3 failed to attract a crowd, I cannot see FRONTLINES fairing any better. By the way, if THQ wants to boost onLine participation, they should offer more than the 8 maps currently available.
All in all, FRONTLINES is a good game that will leave Single player gamers with a mild unsatisfied aftertaste, whereas multiplayer gamers will enjoy more, provided they find enough companions to make it interesting.

Just Cause 2 Review

Just Cause 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Just Cause 2 is about the most fun that I have had with a PC game in a while. The graphics are absolutely amazing, view distance, dynamic environments. The look of this game is everything of Far Cry 2, with even more gasps of awesome.
You play the part of Rico Rodriguez, a CIA agent who is about the most physics breaking mass of testosterone I have ever seen. You are dropped into a large, open country to drop an evil dictator out of power by working with several different factions. To do this you have mass amounts of vehicles at your disposal, a multitude of guns and explosives and most importantly, a grappling hook and parachute.
This last part is the best part of the game. Using the hook, you can climb objects, access flying vehicles from the ground, pull people out of air and even tie object together. Tie someone to a barrel and blast the thing into space to see some real fun.
Initially, the game did not impress me. The story and mission parts of the game reminded me of Far Cry 2. Lots of repetition and little development. Then I hit a point where I slammed my car into another car and flew them both off a cliff. Seeing myself falling I decided to use my grappling hook to escape, but only managed to snare another bystander. In the end I opened a parachute and glided to safety all while watching one of the most insane wrecks ever. The game is full of stuff like this. Tie a motorcycle to a car and use it as a wrecking ball. Rope a plane and ride it around just because you can. So many times I found myself asking "Man wouldn't it be cool if I could to this?" Moments later, I did.
At this point I found that the point of the plot and game is actually secondary to the extreme sandbox fun in there. At points of my new found enjoyment, my wife actually thought I lost my mind due to the non-stop laughter and childlike joy radiating out of me. The fun factor of this game is higher than anything I can imagine playing lately. Honestly, this game is pure sandbox first, and an actual game third. Also, your destructive acts are rewarded with guns and vehicles. How many games honestly reward your childlike explosive needs?
As for the lack of XP support, well we saw this coming. Not many people cried that Halo didn't work on windows 3.1, so we really just need to move on here. DirectX 10 will simply not work on XP, and the look and feel of this game is something so amazing that you just need the best to make it happen.
If you are on the fence about getting yet another FPS in a time where they are roaming the earth, get off on this side now. This is not yet another modern day shooter remake, nor are you wandering yet another WW2 battlefield, this is something truly special.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Review

Call of Duty: Black Ops
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Want to know the word that sums this game up in a nutshell? I'll give it to you: Stutter.
I have a fairly midrange system consisting of an AMD X2 7750BE, Radeon 4850, and 4 gigs of RAM. Since my PC exceeds the recommended system requirements, one would assume that I would be able to run the game. Not a chance. Both the singleplayer and multiplayer aspects of the game are COMPLETELY DOMINATED by stutter, regardless of the fact that I've either turned down or turned off every imaginable graphics setting to alleviate the problem.
Confused about what stutter is? Imagine watching a movie and having it freeze for a half second every three seconds. The movie plays as smooth as silk; it just freezes a little every three seconds. Would be frustrating, wouldn't it? You'd probably get a headache around five minutes; maybe leave the movie after ten, wouldn't you? Well, imagine purchasing this game and playing it. That's what's gonna happen to you. Constant, constant stuttering to the point you want to wring the neck of whoever was in charge of QA at Treyarch.
Really, it's obvious that the team at Treyarch does not care about the PC demographic, because I find it hard to believe that such a fundamental problem would get past quality control. Maybe they don't even have quality control for their PC ports.
Think it's just me and every other idiot writing a 1-star review? Google "black ops stutter". You'll stand corrected.
I already bought the game, and now I'm...meh, "paying" for it. Don't be an idiot like me. Be an informed and smart consumer; do not purchase this game unless you enjoy playing half-baked, stutter-strewn videogames that don't deserve to be put on the market.
EDIT ON 11/14/2010
OK, I've bumped this game up to three stars from one because, as other people have noted both in comments and other reviews, Treyarch released a patch on Thursday that DID fix the stuttering problem.
And because the stuttering was fixed, I have had the opportunity to play through both multilplayer and singleplayer and can safely say that there is a phenomenal game that is buried underneath a myriad of technical problems (more, unfortunately, on that later). I don't want to dedicate a large portion of this edit to a review of everything the game has gotten right simply because such reviews already exist. I will say this though: This game has either met or exceeded the standards set by past shining entries of the Call of Duty franchise from a cinematic, gameplay, and narrative perspective.
However, from a technical standpoint, the game is still an utter failure. While playing through singleplayer, I made it a point to enable a value in my configuration file that allowed me to measure the amount of Frames Per Second (fps) my computer was rendering. For the people that don't know what fps is, fps is a measurement of how smoothly the game is running (laymen's explanation). A low fps means that the game will run more choppy, whereas a high fps means that the game will run more smoother. Anything below 30 is considered unplayable, anything around 30 is considered barely playable, and anything near or above to 60 is considered quite smooth.
With those definitions in mind, throughout the entire singleplayer campaign, my fps never exceeded 60, and it often dropped below 30, particularly when it mattered most: in firefights and heavy action sequences. If I were to give a range, it would be about 25-45.
It was very frustrating. I found myself aiming from the hip because I couldn't track targets correctly aimed down the sight, and hanging back rather than rushing into the action. There were times where there was a really cool cinematic event that was flat-out ruined by the fact that the game was running like a slideshow. And as with the stuttering problem, I encountered low fps regardless of my graphical settings. I tested on three levels what I'm about to say: There was no discernible gain or loss of fps between two sets of settings of 16x AA, 16x AF, and a 1920x1080 resolution, and 0x AA, 0x AF, and an 800x600 resolution. This is on a PC that can run any other Call of Duty game at over 100 fps.
These fps problems carry into multiplayer as well, the part of the game where its absolutely vital to have over 60fps. Since this part of the review is, I must confess, absolutely heartbreaking for me (I played cod4 professionally), permit me to sum it up with one statement: Unless you have a high-range machine, you'll always be playing at around 30-40 fps. For me, at least, that is unacceptable.
Amazon defines a 3 star review of a product as one that is simply "OK".Nearly everything about the game is fantastic; the intriguing narrative, the cinematic feel, the tight feeling of the controls, and the improved multilayer, among other things. Yet, despite all of the awesome elements of this game, the problems with low fps served to consistently shatter the fantasy, turning a heart-racing, breathtaking global trot into a walk that was simply OK.
