QuickBooks Pro 2006 Review

QuickBooks Pro 2006
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Sadly Quickbooks 2006 is only a minor upgrade from Quickbooks 2003. Users should also be aware that they will be forced to upgrade this software. at considerable expense, every 3 years. Also payroll services are not included and cost $150.00 more PER year. See "QuickBooks Standard Payroll Subscription" on Amazon.
The upgrade from Quickbooks Pro 2003 went very smoothly. Unfortunately the software, with no notification to the user, adds a second user to the XP operating system, necessitating logging on as a particular user when your computer boots.
We've found no real benefits from this "upgrade". The software boots much slower thanks to the DOUBLING of the company file. New users may find the redesigned home page useful and despite a great deal of verbage - that is about all that is new here.
New users should take advantage of the 30 days of free support - after that Quicken's dubious support is very high priced.
Quicken's business model is important to understand. They do not tweak their software, from year to year, for increased useability. The only changes that Quicken seems to devote their programming talent toward are new features, some well implemented and some poorly implemented - I don't think it matters to them - anything that will suggest a reason to purchase or upgrade the software. How easy the software could function on a day to day basis seems to be never given a thought.
Secondly Quicken expects your purchase of this software to be the first of many purchases from them. New business owners often will need expert help to set it up. Quicken, will of course, provide you with the name of a certified Quickbooks consultant, who for a fee, will set up the software. The software now comes with an on screen tutorial that may help some new users but it seemed less than complete.
New business owners should test all competing software to see what works best for them. Quickbooks is not bad software but it doesn't seem to evolve in a manner that is really sensitive to user's needs.
New users should also be aware that Quickbooks update feature routinely downloads very sizeable files that seem to do little if anything. A high speed internet connection is strongly suggested.

Readiris Pro 7.0 Review

Readiris Pro 7.0
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Waited almost a year to get this product at a sale price.
When I got it, the joy of finally acquiring it very quickly passed.
The first problem occured during setup.
You are asked to choose your scanner "brand" from a drop-down menu list.
They had tons of choices for:
- HP
- Agfa
- Black widow ?
As for the rest of the scanner world:
1 choice for umax
1 for microtek
1 for Niscan
1 for Canon
1 for Silitek
As for VISIONEER; NOTHING! Zilch! Zip! Nada !
Unbelievable!
One of the most marketed scanners in office stores or online, and readiris can't see fit to include even ONE driver choice;
not even a "generic visioneer" choice.
I figured they had at least added a "patch" or such at their website. NOPE!
Nothing over at their website [support section] either.
I have owned like 4 visioneers over the past 6-8 years.
And 1 canon and 1 umax.
The point being, Visioneer is EVERYWHERE !
They might not be the world's BEST scanners, but they are a large part of the "middle-of-the-road" consumer marketplace.
Perhaps IF readiris was some sort of "worldclass" product,
then maybe [a BIG maybe], they could get away with such a "primadonna" sort of attitude.
But common-sense business practice says to "market to the masses". [Anyone that doesn't better have such a whiz-bang product that they are backlogged with orders and customers are beating down their doors. I doubt Readiris has either such situation].
Anyway, the evaluation :
1. driver choices - poor.
After choosing a "twain-generic" type of scanner choice, I was able to scan my test page.
2. OCR ability - The OCR capabilities was one of the lamest I have ever used.
I even chose a different scanner "type" or driver, but no improvement. As for OCR, I have done better with the "bundled" software that came with any of my scanners. Meaning, those "Limited editions" that the scanner companies include. [not full versions, normally].
3. rating of packages I've personally tested:
I have used a lot of different packages and here is my list of grades, from worst to best:
1. worst - readiris 7 pro
2. middle of the road -
"bundled softwares" - that come with scanners
3. Above average - omnipage, Textbridge, Pagemanager
4. Very good - the Adobe Elements 2.0 bundle that came with my Canon Lide scanner.
5. 5-star favorite.
ABBYY Finereader Pro Version 5
I used only the older version 5 pro, so far.
WOW ! I was blown away by the accuracy of OCR.
It even beat out omnipage 8 and 9.
Co-workers/friends that saw my finereader pro vs their omnipage were equally impressed. They immediately asked their supervisors to get it for them. Luckily ABBYY offers "competitive upgrades", from ANY brand OCR software to finereader pro. [ABBYY finereader is VERY liberal in competitive upgrades. ANY OCR product qualifies. Now THAT is A+ customer service and marketing].
Maybe Readiris will improve, but version 7 was a dismal showing.

Adobe Acrobat Standard 8.0 Review

Adobe Acrobat Standard 8.0
Average Reviews:

Please see reviews of the previous version 7.0. The Adobe activation process can cause a lot of continuing problems for legitimate users of this software. Too bad such good software is hampered by such a process. Being in the software business, I don't mind companies worrying about piracy and taking some measures but this is a bit too much. You might need to allow the software to access the internet regularly to keep your activation (and not bother you with notices of reactivation) but that also means you open it for Adobe to do their push marketing into their software. I have used Adobe products for over 15 years and have always liked them. Too bad, they have lost the customer focus in their rage for software piracy and greed for intrusive marketing.

Adobe Creative Suite Premium CS2 Review

Adobe Creative Suite Premium CS2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat are the industry standard in their respective applications and purchasing Creative Suite is more cost effective than purchasing each component individually.
One point to pay close attention to is the RAM requirement for this software. If you want to run just one application at a time, you need a minimum of 384MB. To run more than one application, you need at least 512MB with 1GB recommended by Adobe. CS2 checks the RAM on installation and will not even install on a computer with less than 384MB.
Another point is that you are not buying the software. You are licensing it from Adobe and agreeing to their terms and conditions. Part of the agreement is that you can make a limited number of copies of your CD's and that you can install CS2 on a second computer such as a laptop as long as you don't run it at the same time as your primary computer. I had planned to do this, but ran into the RAM limitation on my laptop which is an older machine. It can run Photoshop 5.0 by itself, but not CS2. I tried to install Photoshop CS only instead of the entire CS2 package but it would not accept the registration number. Adobe support told me that installing individual components of CS2 is forbidden and will not work. You can only install the entire package. This will not affect your primary computer since it is what you are buying the software for in the first place. But in this case, I may have been better off just buying the parts that I need and can use on the laptop rather than paying to upgrade my RAM.
Once installed, Adobe CUE CS2 is programmed to start when you turn on your computer. However, you can stop it from doing so if you don't want it hogging all of your RAM when you are not using CS2.

PDF Converter Professional 7.0 Review

PDF Converter Professional 7.0
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
PDF Converter Professional 7.0 is one of several otherwise excellent software packages from Nuance that are let down by the company's draconian approach to software theft.
Like Microsoft and Adobe, Nuance uses an activation process. This is not unreasonable, but, unlike these two, Nuance has a very flaky implementation, prompting me to knock a star off the rating.
The software itself is fine - indeed, it is streets ahead of Acrobat, especially on cost - but after using it for some months it suddenly decided that I had pirated the thing and had installed it on another computer. Nope. I had just added some external drives. The software then interpreted this as a different computer. Even Windows doesn't do that. Adobe fixed similar issues some years ago.
This is by design, according to Nuance's support staff, which told me that "changing parts of the computer will trigger to change the machine finger print and changing the machine finger print will require activation. Using an external hard drive is included on the parts of the computer which change the machine finger print. We apologized but that how our activation works."
This is not how other "activated" software works.
You have to be careful with this activation process. Do it too often - easily done if you turn external drives on and off - and you are deemed to be a software thief and you are locked out of the software that you have paid for.
If you are choosing between different PDF options, you might want to see if the alternative has a more sane approach to activation.
This warning applies to other Nuance packages because they suffer from the same disease. I have had it on OmniPage Professional 17 and Dragon NaturallySpeaking Premium 11, others have been hit on PaperPort Professional V12.0. It would make me think twice about buying future versions.Update: the latest thing to provoke an activation request in PDF Converter 7 was a BIOS update on my computer. Nuance tells me that this is correct. BIOS updates change the machine's fingerprint, so activation is required. Funnily, neither Microsoft nor Adobe see this change as serious enough to warrant reactivation of Acrobat or Windows.

Just Cause 2 Review

Just Cause 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Just Cause 2 is about the most fun that I have had with a PC game in a while. The graphics are absolutely amazing, view distance, dynamic environments. The look of this game is everything of Far Cry 2, with even more gasps of awesome.
You play the part of Rico Rodriguez, a CIA agent who is about the most physics breaking mass of testosterone I have ever seen. You are dropped into a large, open country to drop an evil dictator out of power by working with several different factions. To do this you have mass amounts of vehicles at your disposal, a multitude of guns and explosives and most importantly, a grappling hook and parachute.
This last part is the best part of the game. Using the hook, you can climb objects, access flying vehicles from the ground, pull people out of air and even tie object together. Tie someone to a barrel and blast the thing into space to see some real fun.
Initially, the game did not impress me. The story and mission parts of the game reminded me of Far Cry 2. Lots of repetition and little development. Then I hit a point where I slammed my car into another car and flew them both off a cliff. Seeing myself falling I decided to use my grappling hook to escape, but only managed to snare another bystander. In the end I opened a parachute and glided to safety all while watching one of the most insane wrecks ever. The game is full of stuff like this. Tie a motorcycle to a car and use it as a wrecking ball. Rope a plane and ride it around just because you can. So many times I found myself asking "Man wouldn't it be cool if I could to this?" Moments later, I did.
At this point I found that the point of the plot and game is actually secondary to the extreme sandbox fun in there. At points of my new found enjoyment, my wife actually thought I lost my mind due to the non-stop laughter and childlike joy radiating out of me. The fun factor of this game is higher than anything I can imagine playing lately. Honestly, this game is pure sandbox first, and an actual game third. Also, your destructive acts are rewarded with guns and vehicles. How many games honestly reward your childlike explosive needs?
As for the lack of XP support, well we saw this coming. Not many people cried that Halo didn't work on windows 3.1, so we really just need to move on here. DirectX 10 will simply not work on XP, and the look and feel of this game is something so amazing that you just need the best to make it happen.
If you are on the fence about getting yet another FPS in a time where they are roaming the earth, get off on this side now. This is not yet another modern day shooter remake, nor are you wandering yet another WW2 battlefield, this is something truly special.

The only drawback to this is that it takes time. About two hours to download @ 2.6mps DSL and approximately another two hours to install. The size of the file was 2.02 GB. If you are on Dial-up, forget it. You don't have to attend the download, but you do need to be present at the install to click I agree and OK a few times. Once it is installed, everything worked with no hitches of any kind. While I haven't used it on the road yet, I was able to determine there was substantial updates in the data file for all of the various type things that you might be looking for, i.e., restaurants, service stations, etc.
All of my old settings remained the same, recently found items remained the same, etc. What you are purchasing from Amazon is the product key and you then go to the Garmin site and download the software. I updated from the 2008 version.
