ROXIO CREATOR 2009 ULTIMATE Review

ROXIO CREATOR 2009 ULTIMATE
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For me version 8 was the ultimate. It brought me into the digital media world and I've been archiving and organizing my media. My dad had a bunch of old home movies on vhs. I decided to get Ultimate 2009 with a video converter. The converter is very small, like a thumbdrive. Before I started I used the new roxio utility to backup the hard drive. I know there are a lot of programs that do this but since it's included I won't slack off about backing up.
Starting the conversion wasn't very hard. Whatevers playing on the vcr shows in the roxio creator window. After I found this out I freed the vcr from the tv and moved it closer to the desktop. It captured video in 720 x 480 resolution. My next step was editing down the video. The video programs are so much better than the one in 8. I think it is worth getting the hang of videowave even if its more difficult than cinemagic. It does a lot more and I had tighter control over the cuts.
Next step was making a dvd. Old tapes didn't have HD quality so I didn't use that feature. I made a virtual disk first so I could make another copy easilly. I chose the dvd-vcr format to make it work in the dvd player. The dvd menu selection is also much better. Even my dad was able to use it like a store bought movie dvd. The virtual disk made the extra copy creation fast.
Just using a few features I can see that there are many improvements from version 8. I didn't use any versions in between so I can't say anything about them. I'm happy that I could make an archive of the videos so easily.

Roxio Toast 10 Titanium Pro Review

Roxio Toast 10 Titanium Pro
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I wish I had read the reviews more closely before buying this product (particularly the companion reviews of the regular edition Roxio Toast 10). Usually I discount all the people who give low ratings for poor service as having just had a bad experience. In this case, though, I too have experienced the "unhelpful automated email response" bot. Given the number of reviewers who've mentioned the poor service, it isn't just a couple bad experiences.
Having used the product, I'm not surprised they've gone to automated response. They must be overwhelmed with support requests. The product is a bundle of different programs each of which is shareware-quality. There's no coherency in the user interfaces. Much of the interaction with your media involves dragging things around from the Finder. The "software update" process involves unzipping new applications and copying them on top of the old ones. No smart auto-update.
That said, the collection of "features" is impressive, even if not coherently arranged. AVCHD, Blu-Ray, H264, Elgato, iPhone, Apple TV, Tivo integration are all terrific features to have. I'll admit I haven't played with most of them yet. Thus far I've focused on the Tivo->iPhone pathway.
I installed it on my Macbook Air with attached Apple CD/DVD burner. Performance seems reasonable, though when I accidentally hit "edit" for a Tivo video or try to browse through a bunch of Tivo videos with the Media Browser, it becomes painfully slow.
But the main reason I'm giving it 2 stars is because the Tivo->iPhone pathway has serious defects. Namely, if you set up Tivo Transfer to automatically export to Toast and then set up Toast to automatically convert to iPhone and submit to iTunes, you lose all the series/episode meta-data. Instead each item is given a unique name which destroys the TV Show grouping in iTunes. iPhone syncing works by selecting the most recent unviewed episodes of your selected series. When every episode appears as its own new TV series, syncing becomes very painful.
Further, if you've moved the location of your iTunes media (say to an external drive), Toast can't tell and just puts it in the original location.
Additionally, if you tell Tivo Transfer not to automatically transfer and instead click "Toast It" from within Tivo Transfer, then you're automatically taken to the DVD-burning section of Toast. If you switch over to Convert to iPhone or Apple TV, you can no longer see the transferred video.
The only way I have found to convert items from Tivo to iPhone while preserving Series/Episode data is to find the raw video that Tivo downloaded in Finder and drag each one into Toast and click the convert button. This is rather painful given this is supposed to be a 1st-class feature of Roxio Toast 10.
I have additionally had problems with conversions failing half-way through, but continuing to use 100% of the machine's CPU. In my experience, trying to "Stop" a conversion in process is hit-or-miss... sometimes the CPU just keeps spinning until you manually kill the process from the shell. Also, if you set up Tivo to auto-convert, it appears there's no visible status of what is happening, so there's no way to stop.
In conclusion, for a product labeled "version 10" and "pro" it feels one step better than shareware, but if you need the features it may well be shareware worth buying... just expect some pain with no relief from product support.** UPDATE **
Service has gone from bad to worse. Instead of answering my question as to why the Series/Episode data wasn't preserved when performing auto-export, they first responded with a general email telling me how to delete all my preferences and re-install Toast 10. I dutifully did as they suggested hoping there was a magic bullet there. Sadly it didn't help. When I replied again, they responded with a general email about how to reset and restart all my Tivos.
To make things worse, these boiler-plate emails spell "preferences" as "prefrences" and "MAC address" as "MAK address". Ridiculous.

CD Stomper Pro Labeling System Review

CD Stomper Pro Labeling System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For very low volume labeling of CDs there probably is no better solution than this system. With it, you will be able to label your CDs in a handicraft kind of way that will largely satisfy. Especially for the home hobbyist or giftmaker, it will be surprising how good the finished products from this system will look. Throw in the modest pricetag and you've got a genuine argument for buying this product.
There are difficulties, however.
First, the preferred kind of CD labels--those included with the package and made by CD Stomper--have adhesive not entirely harmonious with the Memorex brand of CD-R's. Long term, the instruction manual warns you, the adhesive may become less sticky on the Memorex CD-R's surface.
Second, the software is a memory hog. You've really gotta empty your system tray before you run it. Unless you have something over 40% of system resources free, you won't be able to preview graphical elements. Worse, you may think that the graphic element is going to print, but then it doesn't, making you waste labels. When system resources drop extremely low, merely attempting to use the "insert Graphics" command will make the software crash. Repeatedly. (By contrast Corel Draw had little difficulty functioning properly in a system resource-poor environment, despite being a much more fully-functioned editing package. Clearly, this is not the world's most robust program.)
Third, the software isn't so revolutionary that you care to try to re-run it after it crashes. While it makes the process of CD labeling more convenient, I'd rather just have a template to use in concert with more serious--and more stable--graphical software, like Illustrator or CorelDraw. Nothing this software does can't be done ten times better by full-featured graphic editors.
And fourth, should CDs labelled with this product come into contact with moisture, the label will be adversely affected. This isn't exactly the fault of the good people at Stomp--it's symptomatic of anything printed on an inkjet printer--but it's worth mentioning that people trying to make more professional labels would be advised to choose other solutions.
Now, having said all this, I would still definitely recommend the product for its intended audience. Home users will enjoy this software. Most people could probably make attractive labels within 30 minutes of installing the software. The interface *is* intuitive and convenient. The artwork included for backgrounds is in many cases actually stunning. As long as you give the software plenty of system resources to work with, and can accept the potential impermanence of your labels, you'll probably find little fault with this product.

Just got this today. Installed it and followed set-up instructions for making it work with iTunes. However, it cannot find my iPod -- therefore, it is totally useless to me. Microsoft Word 2010 Review

Microsoft Word 2010
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had tried the Beta version but uninstalled that and went back to Word 2002, which I swore by. I decided to try the final release and was pleasantly surprised. I am working on a brand new book, and now I can find reference material with one mouse click. I have had no headaches at all with this fresh release. I am not impressed with the upgraded "find" feature but other than that once you learn how to navigate it is smooth sailing. Even changing template size on a document was easier than before. If there is any drawback to this latest version it is the new file format. Most publishers still ask for doc. files, which means using compatibility mode or saving as a doc file. They do suggest not saving old doc files in the new mode and they are correct. The formatting is ruined when you try that. There are also some new features that you cannot use while working in compatibility mode. I am finding Word 2010 to be quite an improvement over all. Two things I will share from experience. You have to entirely remove the Beta version to install from CD. It is also best to open Word first and then select your old doc file. Sometimes when you just click on a doc file it will open in read-only mode.

Add impressive formatting effects--such as gradient fills and reflections--directly to the text in your document. You can now apply many of the same effects to text and shapes that you might already use for pictures, charts, and SmartArt graphics.

Use new and improved picture editing tools--including versatile artistic effects and advanced correction, color, and cropping tools--to fine-tune every picture in your document to look its absolute best.

Choose from more customizable Office themes to coordinate colors, fonts, and graphic formatting effects throughout your documents. Customize themes to use your own personal or business branding. The same Office themes are available in Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel 2010, so it's easy to give all your documents a consistent, professional look.
Make a statement with a wide selection of SmartArt graphics--including many new layouts for organization charts and picture diagrams--to create impressive graphics as easily as typing a bulleted list. SmartArt graphics automatically coordinate with your chosen document theme, so great-looking formatting for all your document content is just a couple of clicks away.

Save time and simplify your work Word 2010 provides tools that save time and simplify your work.
Find your way with the improved Navigation Pane and Find tools. These new enhancements make it easier than ever to browse, search, and even reorganize document content right from a single, easy-to-use pane.

Recover draft versions of files that you closed without saving. That's right. The version recovery feature is just one of many new features available from the new Microsoft Office Backstage view. Backstage view replaces the traditional File menu in all Office 2010 applications to provide a centralized, organized space for all document management tasks.
Easily customize the improved Ribbon to make the commands you need most accessible. Create custom tabs or even customize built-in tabs.

Work together more successfully If you work with others on documents and projects, Word 2010 has the tools you need.
Using new co-authoring capabilities, you can now edit the same document, at the same time, as other team members in other locations. You can even communicate instantly as you work, directly from Word.1, 2

With Office Communicator now integrated throughout several Office 2010 programs, you can view presence information that shows the availability of other authors and initiate instant messaging or voice calls directly from Word.
If you're in a small company or use Word 2010 for your home or school work, you can take advantage of co-authoring features though Windows Live. All you need is a free Windows Live ID to simultaneously edit documents with others. An instant messenger account (such as the free Windows Live Messenger) is required to view presence of authors and start an instant messaging conversation.

Access your information from more places Your ideas, deadlines, projects, and work emergencies don't always occur conveniently when you are at your desk. Fortunately, you now have the power to get things done when and where you need to, from the Web or even from your smartphone.3
Microsoft Word Web App is an online companion to Microsoft Word that enables you to extend your Word experience to the browser. View a high fidelity version of your documents and make light edits as well. Access some of the same formatting and editing tools that are in Word 2010, and work in a familiar editing environment, from almost any computer with a Web browser.2
Microsoft Word Mobile 2010 gives you a lightweight editor for your documents that's especially designed for easy use on your Windows phone.4

Whether you're writing that career-making report, working with a team on the next big pitch, drafting your resume, or getting work done on the run, Word 2010 makes it easier to get what you need done more quickly, with more flexibility, and with better results.
1 Instant messaging and presence requires one of the following: Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2 with Microsoft Office Communicator 2007 R2; Windows Live Messenger, or another instant messaging application that supports IMessenger. Voice calls require Office Communications Server 2007 R2 with Office Communicator 2007 R2 or an instant messaging application that supports IMessengerAdvanced. 2 Requires Microsoft SharePoint Foundation 2010 or a Windows Live ID.

I have been a Roxio user and fan for many years -- and until now, their products have been great, but I have never seen such poor quality and had such a bad experience with a PC software product. After over a dozen hours of effort, this product will not install on Vista, no matter what (and I am a technical person with a degree in Computer Science & years of software experience). Phone support is $1.89 a minute, minimum 15 minutes... and the online support experience is horrendous, prompting me to write this review.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein Review

Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Most FPS fans cut their teeth on Castle Wolfenstein back so many years ago. At the time it seemed amazing to be able to walk around in a 'virtual world'. This time around, the graphics still are what impress.
The game is more an interactive movie than a blast-em-up that the original was. The atmosphere, the music, the sound, all work together to draw you into the world of the occult.
You are, of course, in WW2, an American spy caught by the Nazis. The Nazis are trying to unearth an immortal power locked away one thousand years ago in northern Germany. The story is revealed to you with well done cinematics as the game progresses, and in the meantime you have to fight your way through enemies of all shapes in sizes with your trusty knife and guns.
The graphics are of course far superior to the original, and it's impressive to compare the two versions (the original is included with this copy). Back then we thought Wolfenstein had amazing graphics ... and today we feel the same way. There are points from which you can look down at the entire castle complex with all its layers and textures, and then wander down through the castle, looking out every window and door. True, the graphics aren't as crisp as some of the fresh games coming out now, but the improvement is still rather impressive.
The game is definitely a first person shooter, so non-FPS players probably won't be thrilled with it. Also, the game can definitely be trounced by a good FPS player in a matter of weeks. Still, that is just the beginning. You can now take your characters on line and play against other humans in a variety of scenarios. If you think the AI was challenging, wait until you test yourself against other humans who are FPS fans!
Recommended for FPS players who like a compelling storyline and the startling turns of a horror movie.
