PC Tools Spyware Doctor 2007 Review

PC Tools Spyware Doctor 2007
Average Reviews:

I have used Spyware Doctor since version 3 -- almost three years now. I liked the interface and simplicity -- and the power. But as others have pointed out, including industry reviews, version 4.x was a HUGE drain on system resources. My PC's would take anywhere from 5-9 minutes to completely boot up, with Spyware Doctor using almost 100% CPU the whole time. Also, my computers would frequently "freeze," which turned out to be Spyware Doctor randomly zooming to 95-100% CPU for no reason at all.
But with version 5, things are so much worse. About 3 weeks ago, my PC's lost their ability to connect to the Internet. Browsing slowed to a crawl, with frequent timeouts and "server not found". I spent days on the phone with my cable company, and my router's manufacturer, trying to troubleshoot. I re-configured my entire home network over and over. I never made the connection between the onset of problems and my updating to SD5. It was only after finding the PCTools support forums that I realized the problem was Spyware Doctor.
I removed the program from my PC's -- and the problems were gone. I had full Internet connection and full speed again.
Spyware Doctor 5 is causing massive problems for users. PCTools rewrote the program from the ground up, the company says, to improve the resource drain caused by version 4. But apparently it was rushed to market even though beta testers reported many of these same problems for weeks.
I've uninstalled this software and am basically wasting my subscription and losing money. Other users are right -- PCTools does indeed "auto-renew" and charge your credit card without warning. This is a huge red flag. I lost hours, DAYS, dealing with the problems caused by this program. Many users have had to reinstall Windows completely.
It's easy to get caught up in the hyperbole and negative reviews. But don't just take these at face value -- read the Spyware Doctor forum at PCTools' website. These problems are real. And it doesn't look like they're going to be addressable anytime soon. They've issued a couple of version updates, even removed several of the program's protection "Guards", but these haven't fixed the problems. And they're not giving any kind of timeline or explanations to users.
My advice -- stay away for now. But keep up with the forums at PCTools' website. When they finally get the issues resolved, this should be a really strong spyware program.
* PCTools has also been criticized for offering a "Free spyware scan" on their website (actually a download of SD), which will find spyware on your system but refuse to remove it until you buy a subscription to Spyware Doctor. This kind of sleazy bullying isn't normally characteristic of reputable companies -- most will give you an actual free trial with functioning software.

Norton AntiVirus 2007 Review

After several attempts to get my upgrade from Norton AV 2006 to 2007, I called their support telephone. They walked me through the same steps I had followed (not their fault -they had to) and eventually passed along my issue to tech support, since it was a tech issue. After over 20 minutes of hold time (this was after 10 p.m. EST) I finally spoke with a rep and she walked me... through the same steps I had gone before (anyone taking notes about cases back there, to save the customer the hassle of doing the same things??)
After the tech rep took me essentially to the same spot that the "regular" customer service agent did before, she told me in order to do the technical troubleshooting required, I'd have to pay for the rest of the technical call. I complained indicating that it was unacceptable to have to pay for this, considering my install of AV 2006 was working just fine (for a whole year) until I decided to upgrade to 2007 (instead of simply renewing my subscription, which would have cost the same). I indicated that if I had to pay, then I wanted my money back for the software... to which she said OK and she gave me a refund.
In sum, with Norton Antivirus 2007 I couldn't get my previous subscription information to be recognized by them in any way and when things got too complicated for them, they argued that I had to pay for the rest of the support call. I am now officially switching to Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0, which I just learned about here in Amazon.

Norton AntiVirus 2006 Review

Norton AntiVirus 2006
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have used antivirus products since the DOS and Windows 3.1 days when antivirus protection was still an "option". Today you not only need AV protection for your PC but you also should have good antispyware and a software firewall. In the old days McAfee AV used to be free and Norton AV used to be a premium AV program that worked well at a reasonable price. These things are no longer true today and the software security industry has become a multi-billion dollar Godzilla type of monster that mostly cares about their own profits before customer interests. Unfortunately Symantec's Norton Antivirus 2004, 2005 and 2006 are evidence of one of these Godzilla monsters out of control and on the loose.
What happened to this once great antivirus program ? The answer is a combination of "bloatware syndrome" and "product activation". Norton AV 2003 and previous versions did require a faster computer with allot of system resources but they were recognized as some of the best antivirus security programs in the world. This reputation as being number one and the popularity of the internet made Norton Antivirus a prime target for the software thieves to copy, distribute, and profit from one of Symantec's best product. Unfortunately Symantec's solution, namely product activation combined with poor programming, has created a cure for Symantec that is worse than the illness. I have personally never seen, read about, or heard of a software program released on a large scale by a major software company that has corrupted and damaged more working computers than Norton Antivirus 2004, 2005 and 2006 products have. When I say "damage" I don't mean that the computer hardware is effected but what I mean is that at least ninety percent of the time when the Norton Antivirus installation does not go well then a complete restoration or reinstallation of the operating system is required. Since the Norton AV 2004 release I have heard and seen this happen over and over to people of all skill levels from regular users to advanced computer technicians. If you think you are immune to this happening to you if you upgrade or install the latest Norton AV 2006 then I wish you the best. Maybe this could be your lucky day.
I am not here to bash Symantec or the Norton brand of products. Remember that I have used and been a fan of Norton Antivirus up until Norton Antivirus version 2003 of which I have an updated subscription and I still use on my computer today. I really hope that Symantec gets its act together and improves Norton AV for future versions before it loses most of its Antivirus customers for good.
Here are some possible solutions. If you still want to use a Symantec AV product then look into purchasing the latest "corporate version" of Norton Antivirus. I have read that the corporate version is still and excellent program without all the bloatware and bugs of the retail versions. You could also simply use Norton Antivirus 2003 or SystemWorks 2003 which can still be purchased inexpensively online as an OEM version. But if you have had it with Norton for now and want to jump ship before it completely sinks then I recommend you try McAfee VirusScan 2006 or TrendMicro's PC-Cillin 2006. There are some other antivirus choices that are also supposed to be good including Kaspersky, Panda, and Computer Associate's E-Trust and EZ-Antivirus. Don't forget to install a good antispyware program such as Microsoft Antispyware or Webroot's Spy Sweeper and use a good software firewall or at the very least make sure that the standard Windows XP SP2 firewall is enabled.
Before you install any antivirus alternatives to Norton AV remember to completely, totally, and properly uninstall any and all versions of Norton Antivirus from your computer. You can find some helpful information regarding the proper un-installation of Norton Antivirus products on Symantec's web site. The sad truth is that there are so many hidden and discrete files that the retail version of Norton AV installs on your computer that some people have reported it to be harder to completely uninstall Norton AV than it is to get rid of a bad computer virus.
PROS: Program interface is attractive, the latest version has many new security features including spyware detection, the Norton Antivirus brand has traditionally had a very good reputation for computer virus detection and system security.
CONS: Serious installation problems have been reported by many users relating to product activation and authentication. It often disables or damages previous versions of Norton's security products. It ties up system resources and often causes a dramatic system slowdown. It is difficult and seemingly impossible to completely remove it from your computer once it has been fully installed. Product support is expensive and time consuming.
CONCLUSION: Norton has had three years to correct the flaws in their antivirus software and it seems like every year it has only gotten worse. I wrote most of this review for version 2005 and here we are in 2006 and it is the same story. Therefore I have only needed to change the product years from 2005 to 2006 from last year's review. To make things worse I actually would recommend the Norton Antivirus 2005 product over the 2006 version. Last year I actually saw the 2005 pre-installed product working on several new computers but everything I have seen so far from this 2006 version tells me that it is more resource hogging and more buggy than ever. Most other computer technicians that I know no longer recommend Norton Antivirus at all. If you have an older version of Norton that is working ok and you can still update the subscription for the latest definition files then maybe consider doing that until you decide to switch over to another antivirus program in the near future. This problematic Norton Antivirus software is not worth any more of our time or effort. Therefore I must conclude that at of the time I write this review the retail version of Norton Antivirus 2006 is NOT RECOMMENDED for most computer users.
The bottom line...One Star.
MY FINAL SUGGESTIONS: If you are looking for a good antivirus program take a look at McAfee VirusScan 2006 v10, Kaspersky Personal 5, CA EZ Antivirus 2006 release 7, or PC-Cillin 2006. Advanced PC users, serious online gamers and network administrators should take a good look at the amazingly efficient but more complex NOD32 antivirus software by ESET. Don't forget to use a good antispyware program such as Spy Sweeper 4.5, Microsoft Antispyware beta, or McAfee Antispyware 2006 v2. For a software firewall simply use the Windows XP SP2 firewall enabled or McAfee Personal Firewall 2006 for more protection. Advanced power internet users should take a look at Zone Alarm Pro 6 (version 6.1.744 is the latest version as I write this review). If you have any Norton product on your computer and want to change make sure you completely uninstall it as much as you can or you will run into serious problems trying to install any new security software. Read the Symantec support site for the detailed uninstall instructions beyond just using Windows XP add/remove programs method.

I purchased Spy Doctor after having discovered my browser was hijacked, that is, when I use it, a new copy pops up with unwanted ads. I ran Spy doctor, but it did not remove the problem. I emailed tech support, and they sent me some explicit instructions, including building a log and sending it to them. I did so. Finally they sent me an email saying my complaint was "closed" and that the problem had been referred to their research group. That was 2 months ago, and they will not respond back and have not fixed the problem. Basically I wasted the purchase price, because I bought it to solve this problem. I don't fault them for not having an immediate fix, but quitting on the problem? Wow!

I've read all the reviews of this Trend Smart Surfing for the Mac and can see both sides. Some people don't think the program is necessary, other think the more protection the better. I have been a customer of this product for over a year now and was completely
satisfied until I upgraded to the 2011 version 8.0.0.623. When I upgraded my
computer went downhill fast. My browsers started becoming sluggish and going to
not responding. Other programs would go unresponsive as well causing my system
to hang numerous times. My sleep mode would constantly be interrupted due to
slow responses of servicing hardware. I could not update my browsers or other
software when needed without getting download errors and when it did download
and I had to restart my computer it would not shutdown properly. I have had to
use the power button numerous times just to shut down my system and restart.
When Spyware Doctor would update automatically and the notification message
would appear my product had been updated the message would not go away. When I
clicked on the message it would hang up my system. I tried updating manually but
when I did it would give me error messages and cause another system hang up.
Thinking I had a virus on my system I contacted HP and had them scan my computer
with there intensive scanner for virus, worms, Trojans spyware and malware and
etc. HP did not find anything but however they did notice that Spyware Doctor was
eating my system resources alive. Now I have no run of the mill computer. I have
a Intel Quad Core processor at 3.00Ghz with 16 Gigs of memory. I am no gamer and
I do not have any software installed except for what I need to do my office work
at home. I am a retired computer programmer and analyst from Duke Med Center so
I know computers. HP suggested I uninstall this product and that was a
nightmare. When I thought I had uninstalled this product and went to restart my
system to complete the uninstall process it locked up my system. After shutting
down my computer with the power button and rebooted I could not access Windows.
I had to use my Repair Disk and do a system restore to get into Windows. I then
reinstalled this product and uninstalled it again and then it finally worked. I
then used CCLEANER to get rid of all the junk registry this product left behind.
I also noticed that after I uninstalled Spyware Doctor it left my hard disk 12%
fragmented which I had to defragment. I then wrote a program to seek out and
delete any files left linked to your product. I have installed Norton Internet
Security 2011 and I am more than happy now. Norton uses very little system
resources and gives me complete protection and peace of mind. My computer is now
running better and faster than it ever has without your Spyware Doctor
installed. Your product needs to go back to the developers. I would suggest that
this company needs to read the reviews about this product at CNET, PC Mag and
other notable computer sites and you will be surprised how much trouble this
product is causing. I have stopped my automatic renewal of this product and
asked for a refund because this product has caused me so much trouble. Spyware Doctor
acts like a virus that it is suppose to protect my system from. Stay away from this software.

AVG Anti-Virus V8.5 - 2 Year Subscription Review

AVG Anti-Virus V8.5 - 2 Year Subscription
Average Reviews:

I have been through the lot! THIS IS THE BEST ANTI-VIRUS I HAVE EVER HAD - and it comes with THE MOST EFFECTIVE ANTI-SPYWARE today!
For years I sweared by NORTON - until two years ago it got so heavy and demanding it slowed my computer to a crawl. Then I gave McAFEE a try which, although lighter, pestered me with pop-up messages. When that license expired I gave KASPERSKY Internet Security a try: real secure feeling and detailed settings control; however, a number of internet applications, although given full internet access, were slowed to a trickle.
A couple of months ago I downloaded the AVG AV & ANTI-SPYWARE as a 30-day trial. I liked it so much, I gave their INTERNET SECURITY a try too!
Yes, THIS IS THE ONE!
Light, heuristically effective (it even found a malware that KASPESKY failed to locate - and KASPERSKY has the best reputation on cleaning out everything!), no conflicts, email integration (although not with ThunderBird yet, a minor glitch), excellent AI and quiet.
This is legendary AntiVirus that blew the whistle on BIOSHOCK's RootKit!
It may seem a bit pricey, yet keep in mind that it comes with a 2 YEAR license, not the usual 12 months that most other Security applications come with.
If you already have a Firewall solution (no, I don't mean the one Windows comes with, that is a joke - the best free one is ZONE ALARM) THIS IS WHAT YOU NEED. If, however, you want a comprehensive Security solution, try AVG INTERNET SECURITY instead.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
UPDATE [April 26, 2008]: AVG offered the FREE option to upgrade to v8.0 for the remainder of the license to every customer that had bought v7.5. Now, THIS is a company that knows how to built customer loyalty!

This new version of Spy Sweeper features a brand-new user interface, the result of extensive usability design and testing conducted by our in-house expert user experience team. Spy Sweeper meets the needs of new and novice users who want protection without extensive interaction. Alternatively, Spy Sweeper advanced users continue to have the power to configure the program to suit their unique needs. Spy Sweeper still focuses on what's most important – offering users the most effective protection against spyware.Designed specifically to protect users from the most malicious forms of spyware, Spy Sweeper combines the use of Comprehensive Removal Technology (CRT), the most advanced spyware removal technology in the industry, with the superior blocking power of behavior-based Smart Shields.CRT uses adaptive recognition processes and proactive spyware research to completely eradicate the most debilitating types of spyware from a PC in a single sweep and restore the machine to a stable, pre-infection state. CRT effectively removes some of the most persistent and powerful spyware programs today, including Commonname, LOP, SurfSidekick, VX2/Abetterinternet/Aurora, Elite Keylogger and other sophisticated forms of spyware which use rootkit technology to bury themselves deeply within users' PCs. Using CRT, Spy Sweeper 4.5 is able to detect and remove these devious types of spyware during regular system sweeps. Additionally, Spy Sweeper maintains an extremely low false positive rate – approximately 1:1,000,000 – assuring consumers that they are not removing any essential system operations applications or data that are required for normal PC function. To compliment these powerful removal capabilities, Spy Sweeper also offers new behavior-based, real-time Smart Shields, providing consumers with the widest breadth of proactive blocking protection available.

Fallout 3 Review

Fallout 3
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The next release by Bethesda after the gorgeous but surprisingly shallow game Oblivion, Fallout 3 is a vast improvement on almost every level over the company's previous efforts, providing an extreme level of high-quality content and a truly massive game experience at the expense of average writing and a poorly-implemented main plot.
First off, graphics. I'm running the game at High quality (as opposed to Very High) on a computer using parts that were cutting edge about two years ago. Visually, this game is a total knockout; painstakingly and stunningly rendered down to the smallest detail, from the wreckage and debris everywhere even to the level of most NPCs. The character models in particular stand out as a vast improvement over Oblivion's, although the character animations - particularly on hills - is still as stilted as ever and you will notice some repetitive faces. Where the game truly shines is in the environmental design, particularly on the graphical level - I can safely say that no other game has ever felt as real and vibrant (albeit dead, considering it's post-apocalyptic) as Fallout 3. The environment truly feels real, especially coupled with a surprisingly logical and high-quality approach to level design - office buildings and schools are laid out like office buildings and schools, most buildings have bathrooms inside. Wreckage and debris are used strategically to block off areas and direct the player, rather than bizarre architectural choices as in Oblivion (who builds a fort in the shape of one long tunnel?). I can't rave enough about the high-quality graphics, a few relatively minor animation issues and mild NPC face repetition notwithstanding. Downtown DC, with its half-demolished monuments and museums, is absolutely breathtaking. The game is also fully voiced, and the voice acting is relatively high-quality. Although you'll likely begin to notice NPCs who sound suspiciously similar - especially old women, who all sound identical - the acting is considerably better and they've reused voice actors a lot less than in the Elder Scrolls games. People who follow such things may recognize Raphael Sbarge (KotOR) and John DiMaggio (Futurama; FFX) in a few places. Liam Neesan does a decent job with fairly bland lines as the PC's saintly father and Ron Perlman is back to narrate the surprisingly tepid introductory and final movies. But Malcolm McDowell steals the show as the unsettlingly patriotic President Eden, mostly through a series of Roosevelt-esque radio speeches the player can choose to listen to at will through.
This is easily the most fun game I've played in a long while. They've stripped out a lot of things that bogged down earlier Bethesda efforts and even to an extent earlier Fallout games, which lends itself to a much more fast-paced, almost survival horror-esque feel to much of the game. The VATS system is a huge disappointment to anyone expecting true turn-based combat - it's much more like bullet time than anything else - but taken on its own merits is a pretty clever gimmick that is actually pretty fun to use. Combat in general is satisfyingly fast-paced, and a clever, logical approach to level design keeps the player moving along nicely in most areas while still giving the feeling that you might be down to your last clip of bullets or stimpack. Radiation - and particularly irradiated food, which heals you at the cost of adding to your rad level - is an interesting new dimension which is unfortunately barely touched on, as weightless, radless Stimpacks are weightless and much more effective than drinking water or food. Buffs take the form of drugs with a variety of effects, and can make the difference between survival and death - but watch out for (easily cured, and mostly pointless) addictions. There are a few glaring issues with the gameplay, however: the speech and dialog options, while again an enormous improvement over previous Bethesda games (FO3 features dialog trees instead of topic buttons, allowing for more dynamic conversations), require little to no thought on the part of the player - a far cry from the clever dialog puzzles former Fallout developer Black Isle was known for. High stats in Lockpicking or Science basically just buy you the ability to play their associated minigames at higher difficulty levels; if you're bad at Mastermind or have poor reflexes, don't expect to succeed at them, even with a maxed-out skill value. Combat is decently balanced but startlingly illogical in places, and at low levels it frequently takes an entire clip of shotgun shells to the face to take down a single human opponent; similarly, the economy is bizarrely stacked, with the reward for single-handedly saving a town from total annihilation being less valuable than a single night at the local inn. Cash in general is hard to come by for much of the game; even vendors rarely have enough to buy more than a fraction of your loot at a time. Fortunately, there are a few nearly limitless sources available to you, if you're willing to put in the work for the money, and the trade system allows for direct bartering. Character design and advancement is basically just a dumbed-down version of the previous games' systems, and badly in need of balancing. A few of the non-combat stats are ridiculously overpowered (you'll have a tough time getting through the game without a high Lockpick and Repair skill) and, unlike its predecessors, you won't be able to get through much of Fallout 3 without putting a significant commitment into combat skills (which comprise about half the skill set). However, it's still easily possible to cater to most play styles, and clever players with an eye on the strategy guide will have little trouble maxing out all their skills and most of their attributes before hitting the level 20 cap.
The main plot is extremely short by design, taking somewhere between 8-10 hours for players progressing at normal speed to complete; taking note of one of the defining characteristics of the Fallout franchise, Bethesda opted to make huge swaths of the main quest optional (you can stumble upon information or people who will lead you further into the plot, bypassing intermediary steps), lending the game a feeling of versatility that more tracked-in games lack. Consequently, the game feels a lot more dynamic and flexible, even accounting for several quests that are essentially good guy/bad guy choices and at least two where there isn't even a bad guy choice. However, because Bethesda opted to only consider quests with their own subplots "sidequests", there's a lot to do in the Wasteland that is entirely freeform, and the game often rewards players for free-roaming and for following clues provided in the game's copious flavor text. The result is an unusually detail-oriented, lovingly crafted world that feels logical and realistic, aside from the relatively limited dialog options. The game is well worth buying solely for the wealth of awesome content lurking in the wings of the game, and already has an active modding community likely to produce still more content to keep you entertained long after the game's disappointingly average main plot has faded into memory. This is even true on the item level: there are a variety of awesome and entertaining gimmick weapons, the opportunity to buy and customize houses (which provides extremely tangible benefits, unlike the Oblivion equivalent) and several unique items lying around that can by claimed and repaired by the player. Fallout 3 has a level of detail rarely seen in any game.
On the downside, a few of the sidequests have glaringly obvious logical errors in them. Your character generally acts like an old hand at wandering the Wasteland straight out of his hermetically sealed childhood home, regardless of what dialog options you choose. And despite the general emphasis on free roaming, you do get railroaded in several places - your response options to a given NPC's behavior generally consist only of fairly transparent light side/neutral/dark side options where they exist at all, and the main plot abandons all pretense of player control in the second half - but for the most part, you're free to turn around at any point up until the very end and go back to free roaming, which is where the real meat of the game is anyway. The main plot itself is significantly better than Oblivion's, but falls apart at the climax, leading into an unexpected, abrupt and deeply unsatisfying resolution; also, in a radical departure from the rest of the game, the last few subquests in the main plot are essentially mandatory dungeons followed by a staggeringly black-and-white moral choice. Fortunately, the weakest elements of the game are mostly contained in the last two or three subquests of the main plot, and you can easily get months of playtime out of this consistently excellent sandbox exploration game without ever having to sit through the most disappointing parts ever again.
A few other things to mention that I left out of the review:
-The only DRM included with the game is a simple disc check (you only even need a serial number for Windows Live)
-There is a large and skilled pool of modders already producing custom content for the game, even without official word on a Construction Set.
-The load times are blazing fast. I have Word files that take longer to open than FO3 maps.
-The game is excessively buggy at the moment, and only PC users will be able to use most of the bug fixes. Console users may want to hold off until a patch is released.

McAfee AntiVirus Plus 2011 3-User Review

McAfee AntiVirus Plus 2011 3-User
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
During almost 30 years of computer experience I have used a lot of anti-virus/Internet security software. This includes Norton, BitDefender, Kaspersky, Panda, earlier versions of McAfee, and most recently AVG. None are ideal and a couple (BitDefender and Panda) caused me serious computer problems. McAfee was my choice for several years until it became cumbersome and excruciatingly slow as was Norton at that time. It was then that I began trying other products.
I always check user reviews of products, especially software, before making a purchase. I was unable to do so with McAfee Antivirus Plus 2011 because none were available. Reviews of McAfee products for 2010 were not favorable but because I was not pleased with other products I decided to give it a try nonetheless. I am not sorry that I did so. Boot time has decreased dramatically. McAfee Antivirus Plus 2011 doesn't impact computer operation. Scans can be done in the background without excessive slowing of other applications. (Most of my computer activity is working with video, photographs, and publication applications.)
I recommend McAfee Antivirus Plus 2011. To paraphrase an old Oldsmobile commercial "This is not your father's McAfee."
I didn't give McAfee Antivirus Plus 2011 five stars because nothing is perfect.
