After reading the review of this product in PC WORLD just the other day, I went ahead and ordered the program. The review was right on, this program found 11 spyware files and one Trojan Horse file in my home computer. Interesting, because I run Ad-Aware and Spybot as my anti-spyware programs daily......and these two didn't find what Counterspy found! I'm sold. Though my other programs are "free", I gladly will spend the $19 bucks or so for this program for my other machines now. No, I don't work for the PC World folks; nor the Counterspy folks; nor Amazon or any computer outfit....Am retired, and have fun building computers for fun and family!

PC Tools Spyware Doctor 2009 Review

PC Tools Spyware Doctor 2009

Positive points regarding Spyware Doctor.
This software removed extra spyware that CA securities, adware, and Spybot missed. It actually found a good amount of additional spyware.
The software was easy to load and operate.
The spyware detection runs through its cycle relatively fast.
Negative points
The option to use active protection causes conflicts and near crashes apparently.
At different times at least 50% of my processing power was being dedicated to running the software.
I have a modern up-to-date computer with Intel dual processors 2.5 gigs of RAM. Therefore the computer should easily be able to run this software without bogging down.
Overall I like the idea of removing extra spyware I just wish the program was fully functional and could prevent spyware form entering my system.

PC Tools Spyware Doctor 2007 Review

PC Tools Spyware Doctor 2007
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have used Spyware Doctor since version 3 -- almost three years now. I liked the interface and simplicity -- and the power. But as others have pointed out, including industry reviews, version 4.x was a HUGE drain on system resources. My PC's would take anywhere from 5-9 minutes to completely boot up, with Spyware Doctor using almost 100% CPU the whole time. Also, my computers would frequently "freeze," which turned out to be Spyware Doctor randomly zooming to 95-100% CPU for no reason at all.
But with version 5, things are so much worse. About 3 weeks ago, my PC's lost their ability to connect to the Internet. Browsing slowed to a crawl, with frequent timeouts and "server not found". I spent days on the phone with my cable company, and my router's manufacturer, trying to troubleshoot. I re-configured my entire home network over and over. I never made the connection between the onset of problems and my updating to SD5. It was only after finding the PCTools support forums that I realized the problem was Spyware Doctor.
I removed the program from my PC's -- and the problems were gone. I had full Internet connection and full speed again.
Spyware Doctor 5 is causing massive problems for users. PCTools rewrote the program from the ground up, the company says, to improve the resource drain caused by version 4. But apparently it was rushed to market even though beta testers reported many of these same problems for weeks.
I've uninstalled this software and am basically wasting my subscription and losing money. Other users are right -- PCTools does indeed "auto-renew" and charge your credit card without warning. This is a huge red flag. I lost hours, DAYS, dealing with the problems caused by this program. Many users have had to reinstall Windows completely.
It's easy to get caught up in the hyperbole and negative reviews. But don't just take these at face value -- read the Spyware Doctor forum at PCTools' website. These problems are real. And it doesn't look like they're going to be addressable anytime soon. They've issued a couple of version updates, even removed several of the program's protection "Guards", but these haven't fixed the problems. And they're not giving any kind of timeline or explanations to users.
My advice -- stay away for now. But keep up with the forums at PCTools' website. When they finally get the issues resolved, this should be a really strong spyware program.
* PCTools has also been criticized for offering a "Free spyware scan" on their website (actually a download of SD), which will find spyware on your system but refuse to remove it until you buy a subscription to Spyware Doctor. This kind of sleazy bullying isn't normally characteristic of reputable companies -- most will give you an actual free trial with functioning software.

I'm sure this software is effective -- in fact in initial scans it caught lots of adware that Webroot Spysweeper never did -- but it's such a resource hog that my entire PC now works very slowly. Apps open more slowly, and IE7 also barely moves. I disabled a couple of the guards and that helped, but of course then it leaves me more vulnerable. In addition, an e-mail to Support 2 weeks ago still has not been answered. This was highly rated by some PC magazines, but overall I'm very disappointed.

Norton SystemWorks 2008 Premier Edition 11.0 Review

Norton SystemWorks 2008 Premier Edition 11.0
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It appears that Symantec has been resting on their laurels.
This is their flagship consumer application, and comes bundled with a modestly improved antivirus (new network and wireless intrusion-detection features). Ghost has been replaced by Save and Restore, and you get the extras, Passmark 6.1 and SmithMicro's CheckIt 7. GoBack is still there, but not installed by default.
It sports a new interface, with a DHTML menu-like slider with scrollbars in each section that took a bit to find what I was looking for. It has an option for a "classic" inteface - but it made me think of HTML 1.0 "classic".
This was a clean install on a clean install of XP SP2.
The install went much smoother than the 2006 version of the same product which I won't cover here. I'll just say it went much smoother.
The plusses: Bundled with some somewhat useful third party (Passmark, SmithMicro) tools.
I liked Save and Restore - which would save and restore to/from any drive - network, internal or external, and Save and Restore is versatile in that you can also specify folders, or the entire drive. Save and Restore could also be scheduled/configured in dozens of ways.
The antivirus (manual scan) was blazingly fast and the new ability of NAV to monitor and interact with my home/SOHO/Wireless network was a positive development.
Passmark (6.1, rebranded Symantec), is a good tool for benchmarking, and comparing my system to others (download free user-generated comparatives at the Passmark site). I learned that my X2 3800/Ati XT1600 (2 Ghz) is 38% slower than a 2.8 Extreme iMac with XP in Boot Camp, and 290% slower than a QX6800 with 7950GT (I didn't compare them all, several thousand to compare to!).
Mostly minuses: I tried to update system drivers - bluescreen city began. A reboot from a bluescreen was usually be followed by a prompt to run one or another function I had scheduled (Save and Restore, virus scan, defrag) - leading me to believe that the scheduler has some conflicts with my AMD machine (ATI/AMD) and the drivers (7.10 - 7.12). The dump error code was useless on both MS and Google to figure out.
I was unable to use System Restore (Microsoft's built-in tool) at all after installing it - it still ran and catalogued checkpoints, but would not roll them back, even after disabling NAV and SystemWorks protection.
Defrag, when it worked - usually took 2-3 passes to defrag. It frequently just froze.
Norton process viewer (with the "google this" feature that I loved) wouldn't auto-update with active processes - whatever was running when I opened the Norton process viewer was it. If I launched Acrobat, and wanted to see what modules where in use, I had to relaunch it. Bizarro!
One Button Checkup (Windoctor, registry section) decided that the BUNDLED CheckIt (third party) tool was all ganked up, and wanted to repair about 20 entries related to it.
The antivirus, even improved, still only "actively scans" inbound and outbound ports 25/110. No IMAP. No secure SMTP/POP (required by certain ISP's now). This doesn't affect send and receive other than the packet stream isn't scanned to/from. Even the free Avast! AV offers multiport/multiprotocol options. Sad.
SmithMicro's CheckIt 7 (bundled) decided that my 939 (K8) CPU was a K7 - the 2006 version got it right tho, what gives?
Regardless, I had a very unstable system, so as a last resort, I tried the Symantec "uninstall tool" - but traces were still left behind, BSOD city. I ended up doing a OEM wipe disk, and clean reinstall of the system. All is well again.
One feature I didn't try was the bult in "paid technician remote login". It just seemed kinda sick - paying Symantec to fix what Symantec seemingly broke.
I do accept the responsibility of reading the reviews (mostly negative) and plunging in anyhow, thinking back on the good old days when SystemWorks, well, worked very well!
Bottom line: This is more of a train wreck than a mashup of useful tools.
Your milage may vary - but I'd recommend steering clear of Norton "anything" until they come out of the 90s regarding the Internet and system usability/flexibility.
It needs a clean disable (or pass through for signed system and/or critical updates).
The feature it needs the most is a 100% "One-Button Checkout" (uninstall)

Webroot Spy Sweeper Review

I had a major problem with spyware parasites on my computer. So bad that I could barely log on to my web provider and either my computer would freeze , I'd recieve an "open windows limit" sign , or my web provider would just crash and disappear. That is very fustrating and annoying and also scary because it may be some crook trying to steal information from you. You never know.
I purchased Spy Sweeper , placed the disc in the cd-rom (Windows ME) , it popped up on the screen by itself , I followed the instruction , downloaded it on my computer , and then started cleaning these things out easily! I had over 60 parasites on my computer. Now I have zero!
I was so happy. It also defines the spyware and it gives you an option to either quarintine it or delete it completely from your computer. IT ALSO WORKS AS A SHIELD THAT KEEPS NEW SPYWARE PARASITES FROM ATTACKING AS YOU SURF THE WEB! THEN SHOWS YOU WHAT SPYWARE ATTEMPTED TO ATTACK YOUR COMPUTER!
This is an excellent product because not only does it get rid of the spyware it also can keep your computer spyware free! Now my computer works as good as new and I don't have those problems that I described earlier.
Its a great investment because it really works!

I had AVG in the past but used Kasperski for 2 years. I was so fed up with Kasperski so I purchased this AVG. It is "quiet" meaning it is there protecting but won't bother you and it runs smooth and silently.
There is a gaming mode for those gamers out there as well. Easy to download and so far so good!

Webroot Spy Sweeper With Antivirus 3-PC Review

Webroot Spy Sweeper With Antivirus 3-PC
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I currently own this software and have it installed on my main computer as well as two of my family's computers. Not only is it a very powerful security suite, it is streamlined and extremely user friendly. This is the main reason I chose to use this software for my relatively computer-illiterate family members.
The start of my love for this software came from using it in the field while working on client PCs. I found it to be a highly effective tool in cleaning all but the most seriously infected machines--which typically require a reinstall of Windows (or using boot CD tools, but I won't get into the nitty gritty that will bore you). However, before I get ahead of myself, let me state that if your PC is already heavily infected (as in your computer has relinquished control altogether), it is probably best to have someone experienced look at it. Merely installing security software doesn't ensure success nor does it even ensure your ability to get through the installation process! I always recommend using the msconfig utility to disable services at startup as this often--though not always--prevents malware from automatically crashing your system.
Anyways, now that my subscription is almost over, I will have to either renew it or purchase another copy. The year that I've had this software I have encountered virtually NO infections, even on my family's machines. It can be configured to AUTOMATICALLY update and scan so you usually do not even have to mess with it to make sure you are protected (the last thing I want to do after working with computers all day is to spend time on the phone with family members walking them through how to get rid of viruses).
Thus, for all of those non-computer savvy individuals, or those who simply want something to work, I highly suggest this software for 32-bit PCs. Unfortunately, for those with 64-bit PCs, this software will not work (unless they've updated it in the past few months).
Oh and one more thing: the only program that I've found to be better than this is Kaspersky. It is an extremely powerful and effective tool when dealing with malicious software. However, it is not to be considered user-friendly. But for those wanting ultimate customization and nearly state-of-the-art protection, Kaspersky might be the better choice. Otherwise, for the other 98% of us, I recommend this program.
If you are still on the fence about this product versus others (please don't tell me you are thinking about the horrendous Norton or McAfee programs), then take the word of an experienced computer tech and buy it! I trust it for not only my own system, but my family's computer systems as well. Thus, I trust it enough to recommend to you. I would normally not make such a "Just buy it!" statement, but this product is deserving of it.

I purchased Spy Doctor after having discovered my browser was hijacked, that is, when I use it, a new copy pops up with unwanted ads. I ran Spy doctor, but it did not remove the problem. I emailed tech support, and they sent me some explicit instructions, including building a log and sending it to them. I did so. Finally they sent me an email saying my complaint was "closed" and that the problem had been referred to their research group. That was 2 months ago, and they will not respond back and have not fixed the problem. Basically I wasted the purchase price, because I bought it to solve this problem. I don't fault them for not having an immediate fix, but quitting on the problem? Wow!

Trend Micro Antivirus + Antispyware 2009 Review

Trend Micro Antivirus + Antispyware 2009
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For me anti-virus software has always been a necessary evil. It's "blackbox magic" is something I've accepted as long as I don't experience either of the two major pitfalls: (1) extreme performance degradation of your system and (2) contraction of a virus. The problem I have is that unless you experience either of these issues you usually have no reason to complain.
Trend Micro AntiVirus' basic offering accomplishes the two major requirements I have of my anti-virus software.
I've been running the program for a few weeks now and I have not noticed any slow down in my system. I've also noticed that Trend Micro AntiVirus uses heuristic analysis to pick up on questionable actions taken by your PC. I noticed that when a scheduled online backup was about to take place, Trend Micro AntiVirus prompted me to make sure that it was okay to allow the program to continue. Then again, if I turned on the Windows Firewall I would have gotten the same end result. Windows would have alerted me that a program was trying to reach out to the Internet.
So, Trend Micro Antivus does a pretty good job of protecting your PC, but the problem I have is there are better options available for free. First, I am not a fan of either McAfee or Norton. I think these products have their place in a large company, but I feel like they consume too much system resources and slow down my PC. I am a fan of Microsoft's One Care and have recommended it to a number of people in the past, but Microsoft has decided to discontinue the product, so that's not a good route to take either.
Recently, I've enjoyed using AVG Free, which provides the same basic features as the Trend Micro AntiVirus, plus it adds in a few more web surfing options for free. The built-in link scanner (also available on one of Trend Micro's other offerings, but at a higher price tag) has been a life safer on a number of occasions. Sometimes search results can lead to websites that don't always have noble intentions. The link scanner has pointed out these sites to me on a number of occasions and I have yet to be misled. I've also used Avast! (another free program) in the past, but prefer AVG.
So in summary, if you're looking for a basic anti-virus program to protect your computer do the following:
* Skip purchasing this or any other basic anti-virus package
* Download AVG or Avast! for free and get more features than some of the standard paid offerings
* Browse the web with Firefox or turn on your Internet Explorer settings to the highest possible security level
* Use the NoScript add-on (Firefox only) and turn off all JavaScript by default, since you can always enable it as needed per site and the add-on will remember you selections. It can be a pain the first few weeks of use, but the chances of you contracting a virus are greatly reduced using this add-on.
If you want more than the basic anti-virus features, then I would suggest NOD32 or AVG Anti-virus Pro.********* I received this product for free as part of the Amazon.com Vine program. Nonetheless, I review the product in the same manner as I would if I had purchased it myself. *********

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been a customer of this product for over a year now and was completely
satisfied until I upgraded to the 2011 version 8.0.0.623. When I upgraded my
computer went downhill fast. My browsers started becoming sluggish and going to
not responding. Other programs would go unresponsive as well causing my system
to hang numerous times. My sleep mode would constantly be interrupted due to
slow responses of servicing hardware. I could not update my browsers or other
software when needed without getting download errors and when it did download
and I had to restart my computer it would not shutdown properly. I have had to
use the power button numerous times just to shut down my system and restart.
When Spyware Doctor would update automatically and the notification message
would appear my product had been updated the message would not go away. When I
clicked on the message it would hang up my system. I tried updating manually but
when I did it would give me error messages and cause another system hang up.
Thinking I had a virus on my system I contacted HP and had them scan my computer
with there intensive scanner for virus, worms, Trojans spyware and malware and
etc. HP did not find anything but however they did notice that Spyware Doctor was
eating my system resources alive. Now I have no run of the mill computer. I have
a Intel Quad Core processor at 3.00Ghz with 16 Gigs of memory. I am no gamer and
I do not have any software installed except for what I need to do my office work
at home. I am a retired computer programmer and analyst from Duke Med Center so
I know computers. HP suggested I uninstall this product and that was a
nightmare. When I thought I had uninstalled this product and went to restart my
system to complete the uninstall process it locked up my system. After shutting
down my computer with the power button and rebooted I could not access Windows.
I had to use my Repair Disk and do a system restore to get into Windows. I then
reinstalled this product and uninstalled it again and then it finally worked. I
then used CCLEANER to get rid of all the junk registry this product left behind.
I also noticed that after I uninstalled Spyware Doctor it left my hard disk 12%
fragmented which I had to defragment. I then wrote a program to seek out and
delete any files left linked to your product. I have installed Norton Internet
Security 2011 and I am more than happy now. Norton uses very little system
resources and gives me complete protection and peace of mind. My computer is now
running better and faster than it ever has without your Spyware Doctor
installed. Your product needs to go back to the developers. I would suggest that
this company needs to read the reviews about this product at CNET, PC Mag and
other notable computer sites and you will be surprised how much trouble this
product is causing. I have stopped my automatic renewal of this product and
asked for a refund because this product has caused me so much trouble. Spyware Doctor
acts like a virus that it is suppose to protect my system from. Stay away from this software.

I've been using this product for over 5 years now. It's better than anything else I've ever tried (Norton Antivirus, BitDefender). Took a computer repair class this summer at the local high school. Removed my hard drive from my 6 year old Dell PC and the instructor was convinced I had a virus on it. He scanned it and it was clean. No Virus at all. I have this product on my new ASUS laptop and I just sent this to my Mom for her new ACER laptop. She's a new user and I don't want her to get any virus or have something blow up on her if she clicks on the wrong web site. This product will find any spyware and stop it in its tracks immediately. Runs a scheduled sweep for whenever you set it up to run weekly.
Tech support is very good. All I have to do is e-mail them and they respond quickly. Only problem I had was when we reinstalled the operating system on my Dell PC and SpySweeper was uninstalled. They helped me with the install since I don't expire until Jan 2011 and yes I will buy a new updated version in January. Getting the free updates for this software is easy too. Just click on updates and it's automatic.
They also have an Internet Security software. I don't have it. Too much protection seems to slow your computer down when booting up etc.
They also have available a 3-user version. Which I'll most likely get since I have 2 computers and my boyfriend will have a new laptop soon also.

This new version of Spy Sweeper features a brand-new user interface, the result of extensive usability design and testing conducted by our in-house expert user experience team. Spy Sweeper meets the needs of new and novice users who want protection without extensive interaction. Alternatively, Spy Sweeper advanced users continue to have the power to configure the program to suit their unique needs. Spy Sweeper still focuses on what's most important – offering users the most effective protection against spyware.Designed specifically to protect users from the most malicious forms of spyware, Spy Sweeper combines the use of Comprehensive Removal Technology (CRT), the most advanced spyware removal technology in the industry, with the superior blocking power of behavior-based Smart Shields.CRT uses adaptive recognition processes and proactive spyware research to completely eradicate the most debilitating types of spyware from a PC in a single sweep and restore the machine to a stable, pre-infection state. CRT effectively removes some of the most persistent and powerful spyware programs today, including Commonname, LOP, SurfSidekick, VX2/Abetterinternet/Aurora, Elite Keylogger and other sophisticated forms of spyware which use rootkit technology to bury themselves deeply within users' PCs. Using CRT, Spy Sweeper 4.5 is able to detect and remove these devious types of spyware during regular system sweeps. Additionally, Spy Sweeper maintains an extremely low false positive rate – approximately 1:1,000,000 – assuring consumers that they are not removing any essential system operations applications or data that are required for normal PC function. To compliment these powerful removal capabilities, Spy Sweeper also offers new behavior-based, real-time Smart Shields, providing consumers with the widest breadth of proactive blocking protection available.

I run an IT business. This is the same product I recommend my clients install on their PC. I use it on all the computers in both my home and office.
What's great is it does not eat up resources like McAfee or Norton do. In other words, it will not slow down your computer as much.
It updates itself multiple times a day with new virus definitions. It allows you to customize just about every aspect, but you can also have it set everything up for you if you do not want to fine tune it.

Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security 2011 - 3 User Review

Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security 2011 - 3 User
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I uninstalled my expiring Kaspersky and installed Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security. The process took practically all day because there was so much that needed to be cleaned up, but after the installation was complete and my first full scan and system tuneup was done, WOW, my computer is a lot faster now! I'm having far less problems during and after booting up, too, because I set Trend Micro to delay loading startup programs until after the OS finishes booting.
I was sent the 1-PC version to review instead of the 3-PC version I thought I was getting. I was disappointed about this, because our household is wirelessly networked and I wanted to have a chance to see how our network as a whole behaved with the Trend Micro product protecting all of our computers. Too bad I can't address the product's performance at that level. I did have a brief snafu with our local network not being automatically recognized, but a quick and pleasant exchange with customer support via chat cleared that up quickly. (I just closed Trend Micro, connected manually to the network, then opened Trend Micro again. After that, it automatically recognized the other computers.) The real bummer is that I can't avail myself of the free 10GB online storage because the folder I need to have backed up is physically located on another computer on the network and that computer is not under license.
Now, I like the look of Kaspersky better, design-wise. Trend Micro's design is in-your-face macho; it reminds me too much of the familiar (to women) adage: "Avoid men driving red trucks like the plague." One photo in the installation sequence, that of a woman and child having fun on the computer in the foreground with the "strong silent type" male in the background purportedly protecting them from malicious intent smacked of sexism. But the program itself seems to be doing what it says it will do, and it's fast. I was always aware of Kaspersky doing its thing, but I hardly notice the Trend Micro Titanium. So unless something happens to demonstrate to me that this is all just an illusion that I am protected, I'm feeling good about the product.
One thing that really impressed me was that, when I turned on Data Theft Protection, about six hours later I got a message that my credit card information had been blocked from going out. I don't have any autopayments set up with anybody, and I wasn't doing anything requiring a credit card, so I was surprised that there was an attempt to get my credit card number. It's easy to set up this protection, and you control what you protect. I was protecting my email address, but it blocks some of my log-ins, so I turned that particular block off. I also enabled the Trend Micro Vault, which allows for remotely locking the files on your computer if it is stolen. This will be an important feature for travelers with laptops.
UPDATE: I am horrified (and happy now that I have Titanium Maximum Security) to see how often there are assaults on my computer trying to get my bank account info. The data theft protection reports blocking at least three attempts daily to get my account info. I am breathing easier, but also uneasy wondering how long this has been going on. This started happening after I entered one of the Big Prize contests on Facebook! Gadzooks! Facebook users beware!
FEEDBACK FOR TREND MICRO: I love the data theft protection feature, but I don't love the way there does not seem to be any way to turn the pop-up notifications off for it. (Turning off other notifications doesn't turn these off; somebody comment here if you've found a way.) If what I am working in is not that important, just clicking back into the window I want to focus on minimizes the notification from Titanium. However, some of the graphics programs I work in lose whatever was in their minds when a notification pops up, and I have to re-enter the information. Because these are often tricky settings, it's really frustrating. But I don't want to turn off the data theft protection because of the frequent assaults on my system. Please fix this in an update, Trend Micro!

Webroot Spy Sweeper - Windows Review

Webroot Spy Sweeper - Windows
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This version of Spysweeper is somewhat improved over version 5.X. In particular, the availability of a "no extra charge" firewall, i.e., the Webroot Desktop Firewall, is a nice advance. It means that the chances of incompatibility between your anti-malware, anti-virus, and software firewall are now significantly reduced.
As noted in my earlier review of version 5.x, Spysweeper was one of the first quality anti-malware programs available. Although there are now a number of free products with similar or, arguably, enhanced capabilities. So an important question is how does this version stack up.
The software has not changed greatly. The interface is essentially identical. Full sweeps are still quite long, even on a quad core system with four gigabytes of RAM. Although one reviewer for an earlier version mentioned sweeps completed in 5-6 minutes, I've never had sweep times even approach those results for the earlier version or this later one. With this version my sweep times have been reduced below an hour, while they exceeded an hour with the earlier 5.X version. It's uncertain if inherent sweep speed has actually gone down or not, as my CPU, memory, and disk speeds are better than with the original system. Of course, it's also not clear if the relatively long sweep times are due to thoroughness or to inefficient algorithm designs. Faster sweeps can be achieved using the "quick sweep" option. However, if you're going to check you system for malware, it seems a "full sweep" is most appropriate.
Spysweeper continues to have implementation deficiencies. It still specifies the number of cookies it finds. However, unless it determines a cookie is a problem, e.g., a tracking cookie, it provides no further information. A clearly better approach would be for Spysweeper to list all cookies it finds with their location and allow users to decide which, if any, cookies to keep. However, Spysweeper has not advanced in this area from their previous versions.
Some of my disappointment with Spysweeper relates to the company's intrusive sales "nags" after purchase, while making it difficult to avoid or eliminate them. For example, when you select "Check for Updates" manually from the Spysweeper "Home" page, your browser is opened and you are taken to one of the company's web pages (nag screens) -- even if your product is up-to-date. There you'll find the option to add (buy) "Webroot Internet Security Essentials". This is an unnecessary, and time-wasting annoyance. Other competitor's products, some available for free, simply download program updates automatically if needed, without requiring your browser to be opened, and presenting you with nag ads each time you request a manual update. Spysweeper should certainly consider removing this "feature" in the near future.
During a Spysweeper installation, Spysweeper may not be the only software you will be installing. The default during the Spysweeper installation process is to also install the "Ask" search bar in your browser without requiring your specific approval. If you are not alert this will be done automatically. Clearly an "op-in" for a possibly undesired feature would be more appropriate than Webroot's "op-out" requirement. As the Ask toolbar is available for free download from Ask at anytime, the current default installation is not a service to Webroot customers. If you do not want the Ask toolbar added to your browser, carefully check your options as you install Spysweeper
Spysweeper is still a quite competent product, at least at the time of this review, although with some technical issues. However, in rating it I considered not only its technical features, but also how user-friendly I felt it was for a purchased product. In this comparison, Spysweeper's unnecessary sales pitch each time you manually check for an update, and its ill-advised tactic of opting you in for the installation of a browser toolbar without your explicit approval, were significant negatives. Hopefully, the decrease in user friendliness from early versions will not continue, but the future may prove otherwise. The value difference and user-friendliness between Spysweeper and free competitors appears to be diminishing.
