Norton AntiVirus 2002 Review

Norton AntiVirus 2002
Average Reviews:

For years I have used Mcafee and been totally satisfied. Then about a year ago, I got a new computer that came with Norton AntiVirus on it. It worked well enough but I still preferred Mcafee. Then one of the big viruses started going around and I couldn't get my files clean. So I stayed with Norton and got Norton AntiVirus 2002 and man this is awesome. I installed and ran a scan and it cleaned up over 200 infected files. I haven't had a problem with my computer since.
One of the neat features I really like about this AntiVirus is that it will scan any e-mail as you are receiving and will get rid of any virus detected in the e-mail. If it can't be fixed, it will quarantine it for you or you can just not receive the e-mail. I had that happen a few times so far. It also will make sure any e-mail you are sending is checked and cleaned and if it can't fix it, it won't send it. It's just a relief knowing you aren't getting infected files on your computer and you aren't sending them to anyone else.
Another nice feature is the Live Update feature. The one I had just notified you that you needed to update Antivirus, but you had to do it manually. Norton AntiVirus 2002 will automatically update and install the new changes for you.
Basically, it will do everything the Norton AntiVirus has always done, but has added new features (like the 2 mentioned above) and improved on an already solid product.
So yes, I am converted over from Mcafee now. Norton AntiVirus 2002. Buy it now and get the maximum protection available.

If you already have version 2 of Photoshop Elements, don't waste your money upgrading to version 3 unless you want to pay the full amount to use a healing brush insted of the cloning stamp.
Most of the new functionality is geared towards Windows users with the new Organizer and its cataloging, scrapbooking, cards, and calendars features. The Organizer is NOT available to Mac users. Photoshop Elements remains great software for digital darkroom work, but Adobe has elected to leave Mac users out in the cold with respect to providing tools to easily do something creative with the pictures once they have been digitally processed.

PC-Cillin Internet Security 2006 Review

PC-Cillin Internet Security 2006
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I disagree with the argument that this is not an improvement over the 2005 version.
First of all, you have to purchase the newer edition to continue to receive updates from Trend Micro or any other InterNet Security program.
Second, I think the interface of the 2006 version is much improved over the 2005 version, which I replaced. With more options such as Anti Phishing protection, I feel the 2006 edition is easier to navigate than the 2005 edition.
Third, Trend Micro continues to be one of the best Internet Security products on the market. Before TM, I used McAfee, which crashed my old computer at the time (3 years ago). I also used Norton 2003, it was better than McAfee, but I noticed significant slow down in the performance of my computer. I am using 2.4 Gig Dell with 1 Gig RAM, it is 3 years old and Trend Micro runs smoothly in the back ground. The slow down is practically insignificant.
In short, I love the program and will continue to upgrade with it for years to come. I hope this helps.

Sony Vegas Movie Studio + DVD 7 Platinum Edition Review

Sony Vegas Movie Studio + DVD 7 Platinum Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My knowledge level going in was that of being able to make my own mp3s from CDs and copying the DVDs I record from TV on my Sony GX300 recorder. Beyond that I know nothing about how to create a DVD of any kind. Even iDVD on the mac is too cryptic for me to mess with.
This package is different. There are really two pieces of software in it and so far I've only used one. The two packages are Sony Movie Studio and the accompanying DVD Architect software, which is all I've needed so far.
DVD Architect is designed to work with media that is already in the condition you want it to appear. I used the instructions in the manual last night to create a DVD with the audio from 8 different CDs. After locating album art images on the internet, I was able to use these both for buttons on the main menu and for backgrounds during song playback. The software automatically added the song title to be displayed with each song on the DVD, in any font size or style I had available on my PC. I could have controlled each title individually for location, font and size, but I chose to make them all the same to save time.
Once I decided how I wanted to approach the project the rest was a breeze. I did have problems using the software to rip the audio tracks from the CDs, but I was able to use better software I already had on hand for that task.
The software is very capable and has a lot of controls, so it is easy to get overwhelmed. However, a "Show Me" function can be activated at any time and the manual is quite clear on how to do the basics, so after a little experimentation I had learned enough to know how I wanted to approach the project, which was the single biggest obstacle. It would actually have been easier if I was working with videos and didn't need to worry about the backgrounds or titles of the songs.
The end result is a professional looking DVD with a background image of the band on the menu and small album cover images for buttons to play any of the albums on disc. I was able to easily add a playlist button (band logo) at the bottom of the menu that would play all albums in order. The software allowed me to easily customize the button navigation (where a left cursor movement goes, for example) and test the result before burning to DVD.
The primary part of the package, Sony Movie Studio, is a multi-track audio/video mixer and is designed to create the videos that can then be assembled into a professional package in DVD Architect. A video DVD comes with the package, which shows you the various parts of the interface and how to perform basic editing techniques. While I haven't delved into it yet, I am confident that I will be able to create anything from moving background images and text for audio playback to my own music video using video I can capture on camera or download from Public Domain sources.
A couple of days ago I knew nothing about DVD creation, now I'm working on a design plan for my own music video, while listening to my first audio compilation on the stereo. This software rocks!
Some technical stuff I wondered about and now know:
* It will accept every audio, video and image format that I can think of
* It has full audio and video editing capabilities. You can build a movie from 30 frames per second of jpg images and can create a soundtrack of soundbites from a variety of sources.
* The editor is non-destructive in that it never modifies a source file in any way, relying on its own index files to store your mods.
* You can do full 5.1 surround audio, controlling every sound on each channel as you wish.
* Audio can be encoded in PCM 2 channel, AC3 2 channel or AC3 5.1 channel.
* It works fine on Windows 2000 Pro. Many new software packages will not function on anything other than XP.
* Although I have no point of comparison, it is pretty fast. On my 2.6 gig P4 with 1 gig ram (and a lot of other things open), it was able to "render" my audio DVD, including compressing one album in AC3 format to make it fit (the rest were PCM), in about 25 minutes.
Highly recommended for beginners and it looks like a pro could do just fine with all this can do. What was once a dark unknown is now my creative playground, thanks to Sony Movie Studio!

This upgrade is worth its price.
Used in conjunction with Project Server and Project Professional 2003 the program now allows project tasks to appear in Outlook calendars and messaging. As a project manager, I find this feature eases communications with team members and fosters greater team participation.
This ease of communication saves time and money. If you have doubts over this upgrade, my unequivocal recommendation is to proceed. The software's tight integration with other Microsoft Office Products, including Outlook, enables you to focus on project goals, not the technology that supports them.

Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0 3-user Review

Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0 3-user
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Intro: Over the years, I've had several computer security programs... going way back, I started with Mcafee because it was pre-loaded on a computer I bought, but I found it to be too intrusive and too "buggy".... then I went to Norton which I had for several years. Again, bugs abounded and the software really slowed my computer down. After that, I moved to Trend Micro's Internet Security software because I had heard it used less system resources and therefore the computer would run faster. I didn't find this to be true. Trend Micro was OK, but I kept reading stellar reviews of Kaspersky and decided to give it a try when my subscription lapsed.
This is a good suite of software, not perfect, but very good. It installed pretty easily, though during installation the computer rebooted unexpectedly, but no harm seemed to be done. After it completed its initial scans (which did take quite a while), it doesn't seem as intrusive scanning as other programs. It only scans new or changed files, so my computer doesn't seem to be scanning all the time. It also found a couple of Trojan horses that Trend had not discovered.
It comes with "parental control" turned on, which I didn't realize, and it was blocking access to fairly innocuous pages (such as "Excite", which has a provocative name but is anything but Exciting). I turned off the parental control and I again have access.
This software seems to have the smallest footprint of any security software I've used... it doesn't hog system resources, and unlike my old software, I can actually USE the computer while it is scanning.
Kaspersky isn't perfect, but it's the best I've had so far...I'd recommend it.
Pro's:
* Does not drain system resources or significantly decrease response time
* Easy to use
* Very thorough - finds viruses etc that other packages do not
* Good price, especially after the rebates frequently offered!
Con's:
* No telephone support - all support is via "live chat" that never responds. Email support is a 48-72 hour turnaround. Not ideal. But not many of these software firms have telephone support these days; Trend Micro is an exception I believe.
That's the only con I could come up with! And I was trying for at least 2-3.... overall I'm very happy with Kaspersky.
UPDATE ON 9/12: I may have posted the above prematurely. In the past day or two, I have had significant issues with Kaspersky blocking my local network. I cannot print on my local network, nor can the computers "see" each other. Scanning the online help forums, it seems that the firewall function is a bit "buggy" on this new 7.0 release. There are many topics regarding it and several "help" files in the Kaspersky Knowledge Base. I'll update this once I get more info - but for now if you're on a home network, you might want to wait for a few updates to the firewall part of this software.
Update 9/20: I've gotten all of my problems fixed (well, those related to Kaspersky at least...) I think most of the issues were caused by uninstalling Trend Micro instead of installing Kaspersky. The people on the Kaspersky user forum were very helpful and I'm up and running. I'll continue to recommend this security suite!

Macromedia Dreamweaver 8 Win/Mac Review

Macromedia Dreamweaver 8 Win/Mac
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Dreamweaver consistently ranks high in the field of WYSIWYG web site editors. This release does not stray from this position. Considering GoLive and FrontPage are the current competition, it is not hard to see why (will be interesting to see what comes out with Microsoft Expressions Quartz).
As with previous versions, Dreamweaver 8 has the standard Dreamweaver interface. When you install, you have the option of setting up like a developer or setting up like a designer. It is not as easy to change the scheme (or not as evident), but this is not a major deal as a single developer rarely changes the setup of his development environment.
Dreamweaver 8 touts itself as the king of CSS and it has certainly made some wonderful inroads. By default, you can create styles in a page or in a stylesheet. Unfortunately, it falls a little short in allowing you to change your mind in this place, as well. It would be nice, for example, to drag tested styles from a test page up to the stylesheet. Instead, I have to manually cut and paste or recreate styles. Yes, this is minor, but can't someone make a tool that does this? I would also love to see a tool that recognizes I have already created a style with the same feature or allows me to use the standard font and paragraph changes and automatically create a style. But, I digress, there is no tool that does that ... yet.
The CSS Styles tab gives you a great way of getting down to the properties of a particular CSS style. If you do not want to bring up the designer, which is how you normally create your style, you simply add properties to the style in the CSS Styles tab. Very nice feature. A little different than the properties view in MS products, but much more compact.
Dreamweaver 8 is better at .NET development than FrontPage. It also allows a variety of other development paradigms: ASP (either VBScript or JavaScript), ASP.NET (C# or VB.NET), ColdFusion, JSP and PHP (with MySQL). This makes it a good all around tool for development. I would still not trade my Visual Studio, but Dreamweaver gives me a lot of bang for my buck and Visual Studio has a horrible design surface (at least in the latest implementation - VS 2005).
Dreamweaver still has the best behaviors (client side scripting), but they have not made any real inroads to new functionality in this regard. This has been a major selling point to me in the past and I wish they would have included something to help with AJAX (Asynch JavaScript and XML).
Of the new features, I find the CSS most compelling (mentioned above) and also very aggrevating (Macromedia did not take them far enough for my likings). You also have the ability to zoom on design and use guides (good for CSS layouts). There is also a better Flash integration and collapsable code regions. None of these are grand enough for me to personally take the upgrade plunge.
Down to the nitty gritty. Here are the questions you are probably wanting to know the answer to.
1. Should you buy Dreamweaver (assuming you do not already own a previous version)? It really depends. If you do not have a tool, this is still the best on the market. If you have FrontPage, you might get Dreamweaver if you need the flexibility of working outside of the Microsoft world, otherwise I would say no. The same is true if you have GoLive, as it has many similar features.
2. Should you upgrade? This really comes down to a few features and how important they are to you.
A) If you are heavy on CSS, you might want to upgrade, although I am not sure that this is the best option unless Macromedia really fills in this area. It was not quite enough for me to feel compelled to move on right now.
B) Use a lot of flash? The time savings might be a good reason to move to this version.
C) Need productivity helps, like code collapse, guides and the ability to zoom in on your design? This is the only tool I know of currently that has these features.
Dreamweaver 8 is a good product. If I did not have a previous version, I would seriously consider the cost and bite the bullet, as I feel it is worth the price ($399 street). But, I do not see it worth the $199 street price for the upgrade, aty least not for me. The additional CSS is nice, but it is not enough of a productivity change for me to justify the cost, esp. when I am fairly fast at working with CSS without the additional features.

Zonealarm Extreme Security - 3 PCS/1 Year Review

Zonealarm Extreme Security - 3 PCS/1 Year
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been using ZoneAlarm for years now, but each upgrade makes me more and more nervous as the company appears to be aiming at consumers with less and less technical knowledge. For years ZoneAlarm has been THE BEST firewall, but this type of "dumbing down" trend can only result in an inferior product for the long run. When your product starts using ridiculous packaging, with names like "Extreme Security", I just have to balk at this ridiculous marketing tactic. I expect this type of nonsense with firewalls from McAfee or Norton, but not ZoneAlarm! This will most likely be the last time I upgrade with ZoneAlarm, there are other equally great firewalls gaining popularity, but to be honest I'm still holding out simply because I'm used to this software, and I can be stubborn when it comes to migrating.
First, let's start off with...
The Bad---
My primary complaint is that ZoneAlarm removed the handy cache cleaner, (also known as the privacy feature). ZoneAlarm's makers, Check Point Software, claims it caused problems with the software, but I never had any issues with this feature, ZoneAlarm has always been a very stable program. It was a great feature one could use to quickly and easily remove cookies that don't typically get removed by other programs. ZoneAlarm's answer to this complaint is to use 3rd party software instead. Umm, hello? ZoneAlarm IS 3rd party software! Why would I, (or should I), install another program just for this one feature? This makes no sense on ZoneAlarm's part, and claiming it needed to be removed because of compatibility issues is really an insult to my, (and others), intelligence.
I don't see how a simple cache cleaner can cause problems, so maybe instead of removing features Check Point Software should instead remove the idiot coders that couldn't figure out how to keep such a simple and useful tool from interacting negatively with other parts of the software? If the cache cleaner really was causing problems, then logically another 3rd party software could also cause compatibility issues. This really is a lame and pathetic excuse from Check Point Software, and what is worse is that you don't realize the feature has been removed until AFTER you upgrade. The reality is this isn't an upgrade, it's a DOWNGRADE!
The real irritating issue with Check Point Software is that instead of actually having decent customer service people working on their forums for CUSTOMERS looking for help, (such as wtf happened to the privacy controls), they instead have your typical internet moderating douche bags running their forum. These IT rejects aren't the least bit helpful with getting basic questions answered, and will quickly close a topic if it's on an issue Check Point Software doesn't have a good time explaining, such as why they are removing features in so called "upgrades".
Obviously paying CUSTOMERS are annoyed by Check Point for removing this feature, but not letting us complain on their own forums just ads to the insult and disrespect they have for their paying customers. Clearly Check Point Software does not care what their most loyal customers want in their software, so this is why I will most likely not be returning the next time my subscription comes to an expiration. Why even have a web forum if you aren't going to listen to what people have to say about your product, or offer any realistic help when they need it? Check Point might as well save themselves some bandwidth and just remove the web forum completely and hire staffers from India. I might not be able to understand a thing their support says, but I'd probably still get better help than the artards moderating their web forum! Now With The Good---
So if I don't like this software, then why 2 stars and not 1? Well, for one, I'm hoping things change for the better. I'm giving them a chance to improve in future editions. Otherwise I probably should be giving them 1 star because the extra star is really just sheer optimism on my part. The other reason is that despite my complaints, this is still, in my opinion, the best software firewall on the market. I love the Identity protection, it's really nice to be able to block your e-mail from being spammed out when you don't want it! I also really like the amount of control ZoneAlarm allows for each program that can connect online. It's nice to know which programs are attempting to go online, especially when I'm not using them! And even though the packaging seems to be targeting a dumber and dumber audience with each new variation, the software has still stayed relatively the same powerful firewall that has made it such a great firewall for so many years.
What makes it so great is not just the amount of control ZoneAlarm gives you, but that it does it without being bloated like so many other Security software suites out there. The anti-virus does not slug your system down like so many other anti-virus programs do, but yet still provides adequate protection. Their anti-spam rarely catches anything, so I'm not sure how useful it is, and the same could probably be said for the anti-virus. Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware seem to be much better in the anti-spam department, but since it uses virtually no resources a little redundancy is never a bad thing, right? Then again, you are paying for this, whereas Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware are both free...but I digress...
Conclusion---
As I mentioned earlier, I can be a bit stubborn. I've been using ZoneAlarm for so many years that I'm really reluctant to change, but I'm afraid I'll have to. It's only a matter of time before ZoneAlarm becomes as bloated and useless as McAfee or Norton, and with other popular suites coming around I'm sure there will be something I can feel comfortable moving towards when this subscription comes to an end. I tried AVG, not bad, but I feel it could use some improvements before I make a commitment. The point I'd like to make is that there are other great firewall/security suites out on the market right now, and considering Check Point Software's lack of respect for their own customers wants and wishes, and the dumbing down trend they appear to be on, I'd recommend trying other firewalls/security suites first.

I have been a user of CorelDRAW for more than 10 years and have often used many other graphics products including the so-called industry leader Adobe products. After using CorelDRAW Graphics Suite 12 I believe I can finally rid myself of all these other products and stick solely to this suite. All the new features are incredibly useful and time-saving. All the applications work well with one another, and I've pushed it as hard as I can with some huge files, and it hasn't had any problems at all. This truely is an incredible release... thanks Corel!!!
PS. If you don't believe me, download the trial from Corel's website and try it for yourself (www.corel.com)

VIAVOICE PRO REGULAR (WIN 98,ME,XP,VISTA) Review

VIAVOICE PRO REGULAR (WIN 98,ME,XP,VISTA)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The real-time speech recognition of IBM ViaVoice 10 is extremely good. It is possible to get 99% accuracy. Possible is the key word here. In order to do that, you need a good microphone (better than what is included) and you will have to teach it words that it doesn't know (i.e. Plantronics, uncommon names). And you'll need to be in a supported product like Microsoft Word. If all these conditions are met, you're in like Flint.
I, unfortunately, was trying to use Internet Explorer, and the support was less than stellar. The voice command "surf the web" did launch it and the "home", "back", and "forward" commands worked well to do the obvious. But the undocumented commands became key to navigation. To tab from one field or link to the next, you say "next field". "Previous field" is like a shift-tab to go backwards. "next line" and "previous line" seem to be equivalent to the down and up arrows.
The microphone included with this package is the Andrea NC-61 along with the Andrea USB pod, which is a half of a sound card (microphone side only) that connects through your USB port. I found the quality of the pod to be excellent. Andrea advertises the NC-61 headset as using noise cancelling technology, but I found this microphone to not even be directional, and pretty much useless in any environment in which anyone else was speaking, however softly, in the same room. I did purchase separately an Andrea ANC-750 microphone and the noise cancelling on that microphone was quite good. (note: there is some white noise in the background that is audible if you use the ANC-750 to make a recording, but this should be ignored, as it is part of the noise cancelling system.)
The best performance was when I used a high quality studio microphone in a quiet environment to create my voice profile by reading their text. The recognition accuracy was amazing. I used an AKG C-3000 (needs phantom power), but I've heard that a Sennheiser MD431 II is another excellent microphone, and has noise canceling properties as well. The best performance I got from my ANC-750 headset was when I used the voice profile created with the C-3000.
I give the voice recognition part of the software a 5, the navigational ability a 2, and the included microphone a 2, hence my rating of 3 overall.

Microsoft Encarta Premium 2007 Review

Microsoft Encarta Premium 2007
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
While Microsoft Encarta Premium 2006 marked Microsoft's commitment to the Web - Microsoft Encarta Premium 2007 marks its commitments to its own technology. The new Encarta relies on Microsoft's powerful, flexible, scalable, and adaptable .Net Framework 2.0. There a price to pay, of course: the time it takes to install the product is much longer and the user is henceforth prompted to constantly download security updates from Microsoft. It is also recommended to turn off your firewall and anti-virus products during installation.
More than ever, the Encarta is a breathtaking resource. With 68,000 articles (compared to 64,000 last year), it is much expanded (though about 1000 photos and illustrations and 500 music and sound clips were removed from this edition). Certain, resource-hogging features disappeared from last year (for example: the Read Aloud and Live News functions).
The Encarta caters effectively (and, at $30-50, affordably) to the educational needs of everyone in the family, from children as young as 7 or 8 years old to adults who seek concise answers to their queries. It is fun-filled, interactive, and colorful. Kids have their own encyclopedia-within-encyclopedia, dubbed Encarta Kids with age-appropriate, appetizingly presented content and games to boot!
The 2007 Encarta's User Interface is far less cluttered than in previous editions. Content is arranged by topics and then by relevancy and medium. Add to this the Encarta's Visual Browser and you get only relevant data in response to your queries. The Encarta Search Bar, which was integrated into the product two years ago, and is resident in the Task Pane even when Encarta is closed, enables users to search any part of the Encarta application (encyclopedia, dictionary, thesaurus, etc).
The Encarta's newish Web Companion obtains search results from all the major search engines without launching any additional applications (like a browser). Content from both the Encarta and the Web is presented side by side. This augmentation explicitly adopts the Internet and incorporates it as an important source of reference.
I am not sure how Microsoft solved the weighty and interesting issues of intellectual property that the Web Companion raises, though. Copyright-holders of Web content may feel that they have the right to be compensated by Microsoft for the use it makes of their wares in its commercial products.
Encarta would do well to also integrate with new desktop search tools from Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, and others. Users should be able to seamlessly access content from all over - their desktop, their encyclopedias, and the Web - using a single, intuitive interface.
The Encarta Premium includes a dictionary, thesaurus, chart maker, searchable index of quotations, games, Discovery Channel videos, 25,000 photos and illustrations, 2500 sound and audio clips, hundreds of maps and tables (with a staggering 1.8 million map locations), and 300 videos and animations. It incorporates numerous third-party texts and visuals (including hundreds of newspaper articles and a plethora of Scientific American features).
The Encarta is augmented by weekly or bi-weekly updates and the feature-rich online MSN Encarta Premium with its Homework Help offerings. Unfortunately, the Encarta still conditions some of its functions - notably its research tools and updates - on registration with its Plus Club. Moreover, last year Encarta released only 26 updates, compared to its annual average of 50-60.
The Encarta is the most comprehensive, PC-orientated reference experience there is. No wonder it has an all-pervasive hold on and ubiquitous penetration of the child-to-young adult markets. Particularly enchanting is the aforementioned Encarta Kids interface - an area replete with interactive quizzes, pictures, large icons, hundreds of articles, and links to the full version of the Encarta. A veritable and colorful sandbox. Those kids are going to get addicted to the Encarta, that's for sure!
Encarta actively encourages fun-filled browsing. It is a riot of colors, sidebars, videos, audio clips, photos, embedded links, literature, Web resources, and quizzes. It is a product of the age of mass communication, a desktop extension of television and the Internet.
Inevitably, in such a mammoth undertaking, not everything is peachy. A few gripes:
As I said, installation is not as easy as before. The Encarta 2007 makes use of Microsoft's .Net technology. As most home computers lack it, the installer insists on adding it to the anyhow bloated Windows Operating System. There is worse to come: the .Net version installed by Encarta 2007 is plagued with security holes and vulnerabilities. Users have to download service packs and patches from Windows Update if they do not wish to run the risk of having their computers compromised by hackers.
Fully installed on the hard disk, the Encarta Premium 2007 gobbles up less than its predecessors but still a whopping 3 Gb. That's a lot - even in an age of ever cheaper storage. Most homesteads still sport PCs with 20-40 Gb hard disks. This makes the Encarta less suitable for installation on older PCs and on many laptops.
The Encarta DVD 3-D tours have improved but they still hog computer resources and are essentially non-interactive. Is it worth the investment and the risk to the stability and performance of the user's computer?
The Encarta tries to cater to the needs of challenged users, such as the visually-impaired - but it is far from doing a good or full job of it.
The dictionary has been greatly improved in this edition. Actually, the Encarta 2007 comes equipped with five foreign language dictionaries and verb conjugating applications. Still, the atlas, English language dictionary, and thesaurus incorporated in the Encarta are somewhat outdated. Why not use a more current - and dynamically updated - offering? What about dictionaries for specialty terms (medical or computer glossaries, for instance)? The Encarta's New English Dictionary dropped a glossary of computer terms it used to include back in 2001. All's the pity.
But that's it. Encarta is a must-buy (especially if you have children). The Encarta is the best value for money around and significantly enhances you access to knowledge and wisdom accumulated over centuries all over the world. The amount and quality of content squeezed into a $50 package (before rebate) defies belief. I am a 45 years old adult but when I received my Encarta Premium 2007, I was once more a child in a land of wonders. How much is such an experience worth to you? Sam Vaknin, author of "Malignant Self Love - Narcissism Revisited".

Norton Systemworks 2009 Standard Edition Review

Norton Systemworks 2009 Standard Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Systemworks 2009 is a DOWNGRADE (definitely not an upgrade!) from previous versions. If it were free, it still wouldn't be worth having.
Much remains the same, but one functionality has been totally screwed up. Many programs set SHORTCUTS to files. After you've used a program on some files and later move or delete those files, or even if the program itself does so, these shortcuts are often still in place. Now, if you work with a lot of files, as I do, over a short time this can mean several hundred shortcuts are set in your computer that are "dead" - they go nowhere. Obviously, this is not a good thing. Over a longer period of time, this is THOUSANDS of invalid shortcuts!
In the past, Systemworks would find these non-functional shortcuts and bring them up for repair. It would find the file the shortcut originally pointed to, if it could. At repair time you could choose to have the shortcut reset to point to the new file location, or delete the shortcut. And for those shortcuts that were orphans(file it originally pointed to can't be found), Systemworks would just delete the invalid shortcut. Worked good. Makes sense. That's what anyone would do.
The new program just tells YOU to go into the registry and edit the shortcut yourself to fix it - and YOU figure out where the file is (since Systemworks couldn't find it - or didn't look). OK, so you don't want to do that (who would?) - you simply want to delete the shortcut. SORRY! Systemworks will no longer do that. If you can manage to find each individual of those hundreds of invalid shortcuts, you will have to delete them yourself. Be sure to do it right, or you screw up your Registry and then you really have problems.
Why would Norton (or any other company) cut the usefulness of their programs? Especially with new Windows operating systems already doing many of the functions these programs provide?
If you get Systemworks 2009 you will be downgrading from any previous version you may own. If you don't have Systemworks - opt for an older version and hope it will work on Windows 7 when that comes out.

PC Tools Spyware Doctor 2007 Review

PC Tools Spyware Doctor 2007
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have used Spyware Doctor since version 3 -- almost three years now. I liked the interface and simplicity -- and the power. But as others have pointed out, including industry reviews, version 4.x was a HUGE drain on system resources. My PC's would take anywhere from 5-9 minutes to completely boot up, with Spyware Doctor using almost 100% CPU the whole time. Also, my computers would frequently "freeze," which turned out to be Spyware Doctor randomly zooming to 95-100% CPU for no reason at all.
But with version 5, things are so much worse. About 3 weeks ago, my PC's lost their ability to connect to the Internet. Browsing slowed to a crawl, with frequent timeouts and "server not found". I spent days on the phone with my cable company, and my router's manufacturer, trying to troubleshoot. I re-configured my entire home network over and over. I never made the connection between the onset of problems and my updating to SD5. It was only after finding the PCTools support forums that I realized the problem was Spyware Doctor.
I removed the program from my PC's -- and the problems were gone. I had full Internet connection and full speed again.
Spyware Doctor 5 is causing massive problems for users. PCTools rewrote the program from the ground up, the company says, to improve the resource drain caused by version 4. But apparently it was rushed to market even though beta testers reported many of these same problems for weeks.
I've uninstalled this software and am basically wasting my subscription and losing money. Other users are right -- PCTools does indeed "auto-renew" and charge your credit card without warning. This is a huge red flag. I lost hours, DAYS, dealing with the problems caused by this program. Many users have had to reinstall Windows completely.
It's easy to get caught up in the hyperbole and negative reviews. But don't just take these at face value -- read the Spyware Doctor forum at PCTools' website. These problems are real. And it doesn't look like they're going to be addressable anytime soon. They've issued a couple of version updates, even removed several of the program's protection "Guards", but these haven't fixed the problems. And they're not giving any kind of timeline or explanations to users.
My advice -- stay away for now. But keep up with the forums at PCTools' website. When they finally get the issues resolved, this should be a really strong spyware program.
* PCTools has also been criticized for offering a "Free spyware scan" on their website (actually a download of SD), which will find spyware on your system but refuse to remove it until you buy a subscription to Spyware Doctor. This kind of sleazy bullying isn't normally characteristic of reputable companies -- most will give you an actual free trial with functioning software.

Jasc Paint Shop Pro 8 Review

Jasc Paint Shop Pro 8
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Not much difference between version 8 and version 7. Version 7 was a leap forward from 6, but don't expect any such change between 7 and 8. If you don't own Paint Shop Pro 7, then go ahead and buy 8. If you already have 7, stick with it...there is almost no difference between what you already own and version 8. (I suspect some of the reviews on this and other products are by people associated with the companies that make them). PSP is a very good photo/paint program and a lot faster to use than the more well known (and incomprehensibly expensive) Adobe Photoshop. PSP has lots of ways to edit just about every aspect of an image (lots of ways you probably never knew about) and the features can be combined many, many ways so that even after using it for years you can still find new effects through experimentation. Best buy for the money, but again, if you already own 7, you pretty much already own most of 8. If you own any version earlier than 7, or if you don't own PSP at all, then by all means I would suggest PSP 8 over the competition.

Norton SystemWorks 2002 Review

Norton SystemWorks 2002
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been a loyal user of Symantec's Norton SystemWorks for several years now. When I upgraded to Windows XP, I bought this new version of Norton SystemWorks to go with it without any hesitation. Unfortunately, I was dissapointed by a number of things.
First off, let me tell you what I liked. Norton AntiVirus is still the best of the breed virus protection you can buy. It automatically configures itself to protect you not only from viruses hidden in files and downloads, but it will also scan both your incoming and outgoing e-mail. By scanning the outgoing e-mail, it prevents you from spreading viruses like Melissa without even knowing it. Nice touch.
Live Update is also a top notch feature. Live Update will check for updates such as virus definitions and program updates in the background and automatically apply them. No user input needed. Symantec could not have made it simpler.
Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of new features in Norton SystemWorks 2002. In fact, if you use Norton SystemWorks 2002 on a Windows NT/2000 or Windows XP machine, you will find several features missing. Two features I really miss are the Optimization Wizard in Norton Utilities and the Registry Sweep in Norton CleanSweep. Symantec does not tell you that these features do not work on Windows NT/2000/XP until after you have purchased the product.
Perhaps sensing that there was not a lot of new features to justify an upgrade, Symatec has included Roxio's GoBack which can help you revert your system to an earlier state should you run into a problem. This feature is totally uncessary for users of Windows Me or Windows XP since Microsoft includes the System Restore feature that accomplishes the same thing. In fact, many of the features in Norton SystemWorks 2002 are already included in newer versions of Windows (such as disk defragmenters and uninstallers).
Given this, there may not be a lot of reason to buy Norton SystemWorks 2002. Most people really only need the Norton AntiVirus component which can be purchased cheaper as a standalone.
Overall, Norton SystemWorks 2002 is still a quality product, but there is just not a lot of reasons to justify an upgrade.

Microsoft Money 2007 Home & Business Review

Microsoft Money 2007 Home and Business
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a seasoned user of "Microsoft Money" since 2001 and used Money-2003, 2004, 2006 and 2007 versions. On the subject of convenience and integration of multiple financial activities, Money (and for that matter even Quicken) does fantastic job.
However, with 4-5 years of usage of 'Money', my money file has grown to nearly 21MB. With this size, I am getting pathetic performance which is consistently annoying. I have a laptop with 1.6GHz dual core CPU and 1GB RAM, however very basic activities such as looking at monthly report, budget report etc. takes 2-4 minutes to display on the screen ! Even if I go back and try again, it will again hang for 2-4 minutes. I will be lucky if I get 'any' operation finished faster then 5 seconds/transaction. The problem is with specific version but the way Money is designed to store its information. There were some comments on improving performance by using Database to store information but Microsoft chose not to invest money on that.
Another annoying thing I observed with Microsoft Money is with every newer release you will get fancier but more BUGGY software. So far I found '2004' release best in the bunch but once you upgrade the version and make new entries it is not feasible to go back to earlier version.
Let me give you example that will explain the problem. Most common activity one will have is it to download data from financial institutes. Money will connect to these institutes and get the data. It will turn back in 2-3 minutes with newer data and status as 'done'. On the "Account List" you will see, for example, 5 new transaction and when you go into that account there is 'nothing' yet ! Reason being, data is still in flight but status shows 'done'. After 2-3 minutes you will get the data in the account. When you try to accept the transaction it will say "data is still in flight" but you got status 'done' ! In short, after getting data downloaded from the institute, you won't be able to 'accept' them for nearly 5-6 minutes. I am surprised to see Microsoft is selling software w/o testing such basic functionality ! FYI, I noticed this bug only in 2007 release.
I wish to have a better software for my need w/o losing existing data but Microsoft hasn't decided to have better (not just newer) version yet. Quicken seems to have similar issues and it doesn't allow any migration facility for me to move my existing data from last 6 years. I can just wish that Microsoft Money 2008 comes with higher performance and basic testing.
If you are a first time user, prefer to compare both Money and Quicken for yourself before locking your data in one of the them. With 'Money', once your file grows larger, performance deteriorate significantly.
One last point-- even with above limitations, I am better off using this software then not having it at all. Microsoft is doing a good job of marketing its positive points so I won't spend time on that.

Microsoft Money Plus Premium Review

I've really come to the conclusion that there is not much else whiz-bang you can add to Money and Microsoft has come to the same conclusion. The product really has not changed much since '02. The reason I bought this version? I had to, my 2 years were up from my '06 version. Microsoft stops you from downloading account updates after two years.
Pluses:
- good product, not as buggy as older new release versions
Minuses:
- previous reviewer correct, previous owners of Money are not allowed to use the credit reporting feature
- nothing really new. I've only noticed a new way to budget (and it is just OK)
- one of my accounts was valued at $30 million after converting, I looked at the details of the account and deleted the suspicious entry and re-entered it, that fixed it (repair did not work)
- have to purchase again in two years (I'm assuming), to continue to download account updates
I guess I wished I just purchased the deluxe version. . . Overall, doner just OK with MS Money
