First off - the graphics are amazing. The graphics engine supports visually stunning landscapes and both the player and non-player characters are crafted with loving care and attention to detail (if you buy this definitely look closely at the monsters you are fighting, the level of detail on each is impressive). Along with this you have such things as fluid cloth animation, physics for hair that moves and depending on wind and movement. What is nice is that this is a very efficient graphics engine as well, and though many people will eventually be bogged down in a large pvp battle, a recent moderate system will run this game with all settings on maximum easily. Don't look too closely though. Circles are actually octagons, the landscape looks like EverQuest from 1990. There's no such thing as "rounded" straight angles and lines on the landscape, everywhere. Oh, and though the armor is amazing, both in design and graphical quality, it is of a sort of anime nature, so the women aren't wearing much and the guys look like mechs. Since the Armor is actually separate models than your character and not just skins it both looks far more impressive than most games (and the pieces match, unlike the clown gear of WoW) and it also suffers from the straight line effect. Triangular breasts and square pants are in store if you don't zoom out after making your initial observations.
But graphics aren't everything, no matter how much the graphics and the customization of character and even equipment might appeal, there needs to be something else. Aion got a couple of things spot on - the skill chains are an interesting way to add some complexity to the normal one-two-three of many games. Note that depending on your class and situation this just means a one-two-two-two-three button press i.e. because of the way the skill chain works, it many times simply activates, the player clicks through, and you move on to your next skill or skill chain.
Crafting is another big point in this game - if you can gather one type of material, you can gather all similar types (i.e. metals, foods, fibers, ect. form one skill) which makes it much more interesting and easy to skill up gathering skills and to support multiple professions. Each character has the ability to master two trade skills and another to a lesser degree. The items made from this process are very useful and often times better than the items that (very rarely) drop in the game. Anyone who enjoys this aspect of games might find Aion a nice home. Also, you do gain experience from tradeskills and gathering, so while it is not a viable way to level, you don't completely give up gaining levels when you tradeskill.
So why the low rating? Because, after having played it for several weeks I can see why people in many reviews talk about a "lack of content". The fact of the matter is that the game space and world is fairly small. You won't notice this until you're at least level 30, but it becomes quite apparent after that. There are limited areas to quest at any level, limited places to get loot or drops, ect. The first instance you have access to is at level 25 with a 18 hour lockout time. Did I mention you'll probably leave with one to two green drops that you can sell for relatively little money? No loot unless you're really, really lucky. You can't come back here after level 28 either. While instances getter better past this point, it's nothing many players of MMOs will be used to.
Quests also practically stop after level 26, at least as a means of gaining gear or experience. By the time you complete most quests you will have better gear than the rewards and usually killing one to two mobs will equal the quest experience reward. Of course, the quests usually are simply "kill 25 of ___" ... and many of these quests are repeatable, over a hundred times. So you can make what people call "grinding" a little more rewarding, even though running back to the quest giver to turn in and reacquire the quest is probably a waste of killing/experience time. If you buy this game with the WoW game mechanic and theory in mind - you're going to be severely disappointed within your first couple of days playing.
There is no escape from pvp. And pvp in this game means being killed while doing the above mentioned grinding. If you don't mind this, it's the game for you. If you want to level up and do it to other people, buy it! But for many this will become a massive source of frustration and annoyance. When it takes you 8 hours of killing individual mobs to level up, and you have two places to do this in, when a higher level player decides you're not going to use that area, it's game over for the day. Seriously, you *will* be killed, over and over again while trying to level up. You will not even have a chance to fight back either since even if the person is you're level (which they won't be) they have come prepared to pvp, so better gear, potions, scrolls ect are at their disposal to ensure that you die and they escape.
***Parents*** If you are considering this game for a child be aware that after level 10 the player enters the one and only channel that connects the entire server together - LFG. This channel is used for chat, selling of goods, and people actually looking for groups. This chat is most times, if not always, littered with racism, sexism (extreme), graphic sexual content, vulgarity, and plenty of complaining, whining and arguing. Since this is the only channel to effectively look for a group in, you're pretty much subject to this no matter what. You will have to read it, you will be exposed to it.
The player base is really an issue, since this is an MMO it's all about the collective experience and a game that is based (aside from all that grinding) on social activity and interaction. I've found most people to be reasonable and many times interesting once you get a legion or a group, but a very large portion of the people that still actually play this game are generally speaking very self involved, unhelpful, aggressive and rude. If you've played World of Warcraft in an Alliance battleground...this is the same thing, all the time, and much, much worse.I don't really want to say don't buy this game, because I really like a lot of the aspects of it, and I'd like to see the community grow ( and mature) so that the game can continue to develop and expand into a more finished title. At the same time, if you have a tight budget, and realize that this game means continuing to pay each month that you play it, I don't want anyone else to buy it like me, to at first think -"what are all these reviews on various websites and especially the game website about? This is great" It's not. Period. The game is Korean made, and there will not be two versions for a North American audience with different tastes. The game has been out for a year prior to it's North America release, so anyone that says it is a new game is confused. The game has been in a released format for over a year.
Unless you really love "ganking" (getting killed while minding your own business by a player) "grinding" (standing around killing the same things over and over and over again for hours if not days) and a less than supportive or involved community of teens at each other's throats I'd highly recommend that you find a different means of occupying your time.
If your immediate response to this review, that states as clearly as I can some of the most important aspects of the game that a prospective buyer/player might have, is "stop whinging" "QQ" and whatever else you use to describe someone who is dissatisfied or unimpressed with a product, then this is the game for you. You will fit into the community immediately, and probably enjoy the game.

The Lord of the Rings, The Battle for Middle Earth II: Rise of the Witch King Review

The Lord of the Rings, The Battle for Middle Earth II: Rise of the Witch King
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Since the conclusion of the magnificant Lord of the rings film trilogy, those of us who are fans of this fictional world have to turn to whatever sources we can to enjoy it. Well, there's the books and movies of course, but we do crave other things, such as high quality video games. EA, who has had a stellar record with creating great video games based on this universe, now brings us thier latest adventure, (takes deep breath) The lord of the rings: The battle for middle earth II expansion pack: The rise of the witch king (whew!).
Rather then replaying the classic adventure from the books, EA takes us way back in time for this expansion back, back to the time period just after Sauron was defeated by the last alliance. His most trusted servant, the witch king, has managed to flee destruction and now hides in the North of Middle earth, with only his trusty horse (who is never given a name), his big sword, and his small, three pronged scepter. Now dark lord-less, the Witch king does what any most trusted servant of evil would do...build up his own kingdom! And so, for the next 500 years (not really mentioned in game), everyone's favorite nazgul will attempt to destroy the kingdom of Arnor in the north and claim it for his own.
With the stage set, the game begins. You control the Witch king, his various allies, and the new game faction, Agmar. Your goal is to conquer the kingdom of Arnor by any means necessary, including standing on graves, gathering crystals, and destroying magical eleven trees, among other things. Oh yes, you'll be doing a lot of fighting. Because TLOTRTBFME2EPTROTWK takes place approximatly one thousand sixty years or so before Sauron began rebuilding Barad-dur, the player gets a nice backstory on some of the history of middle earth, including finding out what what the witch king was doing before the events in the films, what happend in the collapse of Arnor, and learn the backstory behind Glorfindel's famous line, "Do not pursue him! He will not return to these lands. Far off yet is his doom, and not by the hand of man will he fall." The new faction of Agmar is introduced, which is a big mix of foot troops, mounted troops, and the new class of sorcerers (but from my experience, they are pretty much useless). In addition, we get to see some famous locations in thier heyday, such as the Barrow downs (before they were corrupted and had nasty wraith things), and we even get to see Aman-sul before it was turned into rubble.
Furthermore, this expansion pack features a respectable amount of new content. We have the new faction, Agmar, a new campaign, a revised war of the ring mode, and an updated create a hero mode.
But with all this new content...just exactly how fun is the game?
While the previous two games in the battle for middle earth franchise have been fun with a respectable level of challenge, the new campaign in TLOTRTBFME2EPTROTWK is without a doubt, the hardest yet in the series. The difficulty level here is high, so high that, with the exception of the first and last missions, it's pretty much gauranteed that you're going to have to re-try each mission at least once. On some, five or six times. For me, this is the biggest flaw of TLOTRTBFME2EPTROTWK. It's just way too hard. I played through the campgain on easy difficulty, and on some of the later missions I was having my rear end kicked and punched non-stop. Several times my teeth were gritting and grinding against each other in frustration. And at one mission (the second Barrow downs), at one point I was howling and screaming like a banshee in sheer frustration and anger (on the fifth retry no less). Why? Very commonnly, you're going up against very well armed and armored troops during the missions. And not only are they fully upgraded, they frequently outnumber you, sometimes coming out of nowhere on the maps, overwhelming you and making you re-play the mission all over again. Why did it take the witch king 500 years to conquer Arnor? I think it was because he kept pressing the "Restart mission" button over and over again. And keep in mind that I was playing the game on easy. I triple dog dare anyone to play this game on hard difficulty. If you manage to keep from smashing your moniter and taking a sledgehammer to the CD, then you have the nerves of a god.
The best way I can sum up my feelings about the new campaign is that it feels more like a chore to play it, rather then an experience to be enjoyed. Rather then looking forward to each new mission, I found myself slightly dreading each one, only to find my fears confirmed as I was faced with seemenly impossible mission objectives, overwhelming numbers of vastly superior troops, or moments of "How the hell am I going to do that?!" By the time the climactic siege of the campaign comes by (which took me an hour and twenty two minutes to complete) , I was more burned out then anything else, and simply wanted to get it over with so I could see how the game ended. Rather then the exciting siege of Dol Guldor, or the battle of the black gates from the previous two games, the end of TLOTRTBFME2EPTROTWK is a slight burnout. The final mission, which I won't reveal here, does bring back some of the simple enjoyment of the previous two games, but overall, the new campaign is, for me, too hard, too irritating and most of all, just not very fun. That's not to say however, that it isn't all bad. The first Barrow Downs mission is an absoloutly chaotic "King of the hill" mission that, while hard, is exciting to watch as you desperatly try to keep control of a hill while being assaulted again and again.
With the campaign out of the way, what else does TLOTRTBFME2EPTROTWK offer? Skirmish and multiplayer return, but since I cannot play online, I can only comment on skirmish. For this mode we get several new maps, including ones that were previously only avaliable on the collectors edition of the battle for middle earth two, such as the argonath, amon sul, a perfectly balanced snow map to see who truly is the better duelist, and even the paths of the dead.
All the factions in the game, with the exception of Agmar, get various tweaks and upgardes. Men for example, get rohan spearmen and mounted knights. Elves get noldorin warriors (the elven warriors seen at the last alliance), Dwarves get prince Bard of Dale as a new hero, so on and so forth. New berserker units are introduced in this expansion, who are basically very powerful units that can cause a lot of destruction to anything or anyone they come across. In a nice touch however, each faction can have only a few of these units on the field at any given time to help balance things out, so that Isengard can't overrun the field with an army of uruk-hai death bringers (who are armed with gigantic swords). My favorite tweaking is with mordor (who now gets Gothmag the orc as a hero), where instead of individual nazgul, you now get to control eight of them as a single unit, meaning that there are eight black horsies and thier riders galloping across the field (but I do wonder why you recruit the fearsome nine from the seige works? That doesn't make much sense). Tolkien fans will also appreciate how one of the nine is now named as Khamûl.
War of the ring, a risk/boardgame style strategy game, gets various tweaks and upgrades too. more territories have been added, meaning that players can finally cover all of middle earth for the first time (with the exception of the mysterious, cloud covered lands to the very far north and east, of which we know nothing). Buildings, units, and heroes no longer take a few turns to complete, all being finished in one turn, which is a very nice touch. In addition, units can move across two friendly territories in one turn (which, according to the game, allows you to re-create Theoden's frantic charge towards Minas Tirith!), but in a minor gripe, create-a-hero's cannot move as normal hero units, which is odd considering that they are, you know, supposed to be heroes. They have to be attatched to other heroes in order to invade new territories, which is a gripe, as I'd like to see my hero forging out on his own, rather then tagging along with other heroes. As a final note, the AI has gotten tweaked as well, meaning that they will retreat when they cannot win a battle (which saves a LOT of time during turns), and you can, at last, keep all the units trained during the battles, and they no longer vanish when you return to the world map. Overall, War of the ring is now definitly nicer with these upgrades.
So what about the final feature, create a hero? Sadly, this is a bit of a dissapointment. Players are supposed to be given even more freedom in creating thier hereos then ever before, but that is only true to a very slight degree. You still get the same default, non-changable voices as before, you can't alter faces, and there is only one real new category (a new type of troll), but because I don't care for trolls, that does not affect me. You do get a few new items and pieces of clothing, but it's usually only two things per category. For example, the man of the west gets two new helmets, two new shoulder pads, a new outfit (chain-mail), and a few arm and leg pads, but that's it. No new swords, no new shields.Wizards get two new staffs (Gandalf the white and Saruman's), a face with a very long beard, and that's pretty much it. This pattern is repeated for all the other hero categories. You get one or two new additions in some of the apperance categories, but that's it. While I do appreciate the ability to create a digital version of myself, the possibilities here just seem, in concept, limitless. Why not add capes? Capes make people look even more bad-a**. Why not add outfits from the common soliders from each faction? Why not add...Read more›

Dungeon Siege: Legends of Aranna Expansion Pack Review

Dungeon Siege: Legends of Aranna Expansion Pack
Average Reviews:

I thourghly enjoyed Dungeon Siege. So when the expansion was announced, I as close to first in line to buy it as I could be. I was not disappointed with the game. There are two more character types that you can pick up in journey. The Backpack is a great addition to the inventory system. It allows you to expand the ability of your characters to carry more. There are a range of new and instersting monsters to fight. Mad Doc (the company that wrote the expansion) has obviously played a little bit of Diablo II as they have included the Set Items in for magical items. And they did so that the single player can actually complete a set (are you listening Blizzard ?) .All and all if you liked Dungeon Siege, you are going to like Legends of Aranna. And for the first timers, the full version of Dungeon Siege is included.
The biggest complaint that has been leveled at LOA is that it is more of the same. The point is that yes it is more of the same only improved. If you disliked Dungeon Siege, do not buy it. But if you beat Dungeon Siege and want more or are thinking about picking up Dungeon Siege to see what all the fuss is about, this is the product for you.
Now when is Dungeon Siege 2 coming out....

EverQuest II Review

EverQuest II
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This peview is intended for an audience of some experience in online gaming, though inexperienced readers may find some good stuff in it as well.
The original EverQuest was a phenomenon. A game for the ages, quite literally. It's lasted for years, and for some people, it's never been boring. Has another online game ever come close to receiving the same acclaim as the original EverQuest? No way!
I had my hopes up for Star Wars Galaxies, and I gave into much of the hype. Unfortunately, for me it turned out a bust. The second I entered the SWG world I was awed by the graphics and the incredible detail. And I even became entranced for a time . . . well, more precisely, a week. The problem with Galaxies (and the success of EverQuest) is game play. SWG has no loot off dead creatures, no experience hook (it didn't take much time to reach master of any one profession). It was eye candy with no core. EverQuest has the "hook". It has the content. This old game has yet to meet its match.
So what about the sequel, EverQuest 2? Will it take the crown from its predecessor? Question marks arise, but I will provide some answers. Reading the developer comments on various forums, I can reveal some interesting details.
- There will be zones, just like in the original EQ
- There will be a "consider" option (con) that shows possible experience gains and follows the original EQ color scheme
- Luclin, Kunark, Velious, Odus and Fadywer will be absent from the original game. Antonica will have split into continents of it's own. The game takes place an age after the original EverQuest
- There will be no kill-stealing or power-leveling, enforced by a "lock" rule. Kiting will be absent
- There will be no twinking, and buffing "newbies" will not be allowed
- There will be item decay on death
- There will be 50 levels to attain originally, with a game engine that supposedly allows up to 200 if the developers choose to have expansions
- There will be standard groups of 6, and raid-groups of 24
- There will be solo-content and group-content
- There will be 47 classes, designed in a "tree' fashion. Everyone will start as a Commoner until level 5, and then choose a basic profession. At level 10, a new sub-profession will become available, and so on.
- There will only be 2 starting cities, Freeport and Queynos (rumored to be 17 zones each!)
- Roughly half of the original EverQuests zones will be remade and included in the sequel
- There will be player housing, and guild housing, but only in the cities
- The minimum requirements will be:
Operating System: Windows 98/2000/ME/XP
Processor: 1GHz
RAM: 512 MB
Video Card: DirectX 9 compatible. Pixel shader and vertex shader compatible hardware with 64 MB of texture memory
Sound Card: DirectSound compatible audio hardware
- The recommended requirements will be:
Operating System: Windows XP
Processor: 2 GHz or greater
RAM: 1 GB
CD-ROM: 16x CD-ROM or DVD-ROM
Video Card: DirectX 9 compatible. Pixel shader and Vertex shader compatible hardware with 128mb of texture memory or greater
Sound Card: Sound Blaster Audigy
Some problems that may arise with EverQuest 2 are graphics and solo-play, and cities.
Grouping is practically enforced in some cases (in dungeons), and soloing may be time-limited in some cases (ridiculous). There will be solo-content, specifically designed by the developers, but they want to suggest grouping most of all. Make no mistake; this will be a "group-oriented" game.
Graphics are an online game's "One Ring" (referring to Lord of the Rings) concerning the development team. Games that get carried away with graphics tend to lack in other areas. I hope that this is not the case with EverQuest 2.
I've read numerous articles where the developers are bragging and taking great pride in their graphics system, completely unaware that most people couldn't care less. If it's not a fun game, people will not play it, period. This was the case in SWG, which has lost a large quantity of its subscribers.
What the EQ 2 development team should do is concentrate on balance between their 47 classes (wow), balance between their variety of species and (of course) bug testing. They should concentrate on improving the game from the original (game mechanics), which they have done marvelously so far, and most importantly, game content and depth.
Cities may also be a problem in the new EQ. There are only 2 cities (albeit massive ones according to the dev team). What does this mean? Elves, dwarves, humans, frogloks, ogres and trolls all living in the same city. I find it ridiculous, and a complete step back from one of the thing's that made the original EQ great: cultural differences.
Cities may also be problematic for those who remember the original Freeport and Queynos. The developers were bragging about making the cities ten times bigger than the originals. My God! I couldn't find my way through Freeport in the first EverQuest, how the heck am I going to do it now? In addition, Freeport in the original EverQuest was devoid of players, completely, unless you were at the bank or the zone entrance. Keep this in mind. These new cities will be empty ghost towns, and far too big to navigate without an overlay map of some kind (which brings you out of the game).
EverQuest 2 is slated to come out in June, but Beta hasn't even started yet. It will NOT come out in June, which I'm sorry to say. With experience, I can tell you to expect the release around fall or winter of 2004.

I bought this cd from Scholastic for over $15 and it doesn't work on newer computers. My Amazing Human Body has a copyright of 1997. When I tried to install it on my Windows XP, I got a message that it might not work because this cd is for Windows 95. The computer was right, it didn't work on Windows XP. The outside of the package said it should work on Windows XP, but it sure doesn't work. What a waste of money!!

Titan Quest Immortal Throne Expansion Pack Review

Titan Quest Immortal Throne Expansion Pack
Average Reviews:

I am a huge fan of Titan Quest and THQ, the company that makes it. I love the expansion, and I say that having not even played in the new location yet! They added to the game so many cool new features. This game already had huge replayability, and now it is even more so. Awesome enhancements include:
- New "Dream" specialty - it's great, I'm using it
- More inventory space...you can now collect sets of items and suit up for different battles
- You can share items between your characters - this adds HUGELY to replayability, as when adventuring as one character, you can pick up an item that your other character can use
- My character now leaves footprints in the snow. Fricking footprints.
- Drops are now way better, much easier to get the specialty items
- You can separate relics from items (it can be expensive though, as it should be)
- You now find "formulae", which is a formula to make a charm that goes in a new inventory slot. You have to find all the ingredients and then pay money to get it made.
- They added commas to your gold total, so you can read it now
- They added a pop up clock so you can see what time it is
I mention those last two enhancements because they show the company really listens and takes the time to put in the little touches. That and I've surprised myself how often I use the clock.
I realize this review sounds like I work for the company. I am just a big fan. I'm sorry to hear the other reviewer had problems with it crashing. I have played the expansion probably 7-10 hours so far, and have only frozen once...the expansion is brand new, though, I'm sure they'll iron out the kinks in an update. I have a Core 2 Duo, 2 gigs ram, and an ATI 1900XTX, and I play at 1280x1024 with everything maxed.

Heroes of Might and Magic 4 Review

Heroes of Might and Magic 4
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Heroes 4 Does have many wonderful improvements that makes it more complex and in sum, more compelling than S3, but there are these little problems in the game that Heroes 3 didn't have. I don't understand why 3do chose to take away certain elements of Heroes 3 that were already perfect.
Steps Foward:
*I have to give it to the creators to add the "Heroes in Combat" function. This makes the combination of your armies a lot more complex. 3 Heroes with 3 monsters.. or An army of 6 heroes in all.. You choose!! And Each Hero can be specialized in his her own way..
*Skills- Each hero can have 5 major skills and 15 minor skills.. That's a whopping 20 total skills. That makes the heroes unique enough, huh?
*New Monsters!! - Need I say more?
*New Spells!! -Need I say more?
*Potions give a nice little addition to the game. Allows for more dynamics during battle.
*Monsters are a bit more complex in Heroes 4. Many of them have more skills.. and more specialties... Mages can cast different spells.. and there are choices to what type of monsters your town produces.
*Monsters are generated in each town per turn instead of per week.. makes more sense this way.
Steps Backwards:
* Like some other posters.. I don't understand why they don't tell you how much experience you get after each better.. makes it hard to keep track of the levels of your heroes.
*Heroes no longer have their own little specialization. So for example, it doesn't matter whether you start out with a priest named bob or a priest named Rob.. there's no difference. Remember, in Heroes 3, every hero had a special skill?
* Um.. graphics seem to be worse in some cases.. better in others.. yes.. 3d graphics.. but still worse in some cases (combat).
*Combat is worse. We need the squares!!! It's so hard to calculate the number of steps your units can move without some square indication. And the graphics are worse... Combat was a lot better in Heroes 3.
*I just like the monsters in Heroes 3 more.. they looked nicer....... maybe they need a new graphic designer.
* No upgrades for Monsters... arggghh.. why are there no upgrades for monsters?

Fate: The Traitor Soul Review

Fate: The Traitor Soul
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The original Fate was the PG version of DIABLO: cartoonish graphics, simplified quests, very limited gore and a cute child/hero running, fighting (and fishing!) in armor. The dungeons were endlessly random, the beasts well deserving their fate and the weapons and trinkets imaginative (and surprisingly expensive!). Overall, very fun to play!
Its first sequel, Fate: Undiscovered Realms, offered more of the same in a second set of dungeons. And now the second sequel improves little beyond offering yet another set.
Very few things are new in this standalone incarnation. True, you can now choose amongst four races (Human, Shadow Elf, Half-Orc and Cogger). The best one is still Human, a true Jack-of-all-trades: Elves are agile but have a very hard time defending themselves; Orcs are clumsy tanks, strong but with low dexterity; whereas Coggers are strong geeks but with no magical abilities.
There are new armor sets, new weapons and spells and new pets. On the other hand, I could discern no change in the graphics and sounds compared to the previous installments.
Finally, the two previous dungeons each get twenty extra levels to explore and plunder. This is a steal because for the price I remember paying for the first game you now get both the original game and its first expansion. On the other hand, you may find exploring all three dungeons and completing one run-and-fetch quest after another a bit tedious. Nevertheless, it is still good casual fun.
RECOMMENDED.

Face the Ultimate Challenge in FATE: The Traitor Soul The Book of Fate rests on the altar before you.The liberation of Grove made you a hero, but this act has ensured your immortality in the halls of legend. The Book has returned. The Realms are safe.
Your armor clatters on stone as you sit on the cold floor of the temple.Few would recognize the youth who set off in search of adventure through the Dungeon Gate under the grime and soot that coats your skin and tarnishes the priceless artifacts you carry.Truly, you could no longer be called a youth, not after your time venturing into the darkness--your steel gaze speaks to the darkness that has followed you back.
And so, when the Traveler arrives, speaking of a test within the Temple of Fate, available to only the most dedicated of champions, you stand, confident that whatever spoils lie beyond the swirling portal will soon be yours. You are the hero of Grove, the Guardian of Fate--evil trembles at your every step.
It does not occur to you to question the motives of the snake-haired Traveller, weaving tales of a Chamber of Trials in which to prove your quality. It is only natural that such a test would come to one as accomplished as you.So it is with confidence that you step forward, ready to face whatever challenges lie ahead.
The portal is dark, reflective, and as you approach the chill breeze issuing forth gives you pause.Your actions are mirrored by the image on the other side, but... the eyes. The eyes have a malice you have known only in the heat of battle, a cruel stare you recognize but have resisted at every turn. You advance through the portal even as your breath catches in your throat. What lies beyond is no common threat, no clear villain. The darkness you face is your own.

Zoo Tycoon 2 Extinct Animals Expansion Pack Review

Zoo Tycoon 2 Extinct Animals Expansion Pack

As a huge fan of all things zoo and animal, I took a gamble on this game in hopes of reigniting my childhood passions. I was pleasantly surprised to find Zoo Tycoon 2: Extinct Animals was actually a lot of fun for a kids game. At my age it isn't really a challenge at all, but the fanciful nature of the gaming system and antics of the animals are fun to watch and unfold as you build your dream zoo. I was impressed to notice that both male and female animals have different looks, and some of the dinosaurs even have feathers. Someone was doing their research at Microsoft. I'd definitely recommend this game for younger kids who want to learn more about extinct animals and anyone else who just loves animals.

Rift Review

Rift
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
What to say about Rift? Is it beautiful? Yes. Is it fun? Amazingly so! Is it different? Both yes, and no.
Visuals and Sound:
Are you tired of cartoony graphics that stress your video cards but don't really look all that good? I know I was! World of Warcraft knock offs abound these days, and I have gotten sick and tired of the same graphics every time I try a new game. I remember buying Age of Conan and being wowed by the graphics, why has it taken so long for another game to follow suit?
Well the wait for amazing graphics is over! Rift's graphics are on par or better than any other MMO out there. Everything is very "realistic" (in quotes because it is a fantasy world). Water looks like water, spell effects are top notch, and this is all done without stressing my 2 year old computer too much.
The sound quality is very rich. Yes, it can be a bit repetitive. A sword hitting a shield can only sound so many different ways. I do wish there was a bit of differention in the combat music but oh well. That is a minor gripe. Speaking of music: it is a mix of World of Warcraft and Guild Wars, depending on the area. I loved GW's music and am glad to see that someone else picked up on this style.
Gameplay:
If you've played an MMO recently, then you know how battles go. You hit your predefined buttons until either you or the enemy dies. What makes this game different is the range of skills you have available even very early in the game.
Speaking of skills: You do not just pull from one specific class (or soul as they call it). You can use up to 3 souls at a time. Yes, the three you are using are fairly similar in purpose, but the function is completely different! By mixing the souls and purchasing their abilities how YOU choose, your characters can be very different even from someone else using the same 3 souls.
You can also change "Roles" on the fly. These are like Talent Builds in WoW. You can use any souls that you have available on different roles. I currently have a Tank role and a DPS role on my Warrior. This makes it much easier to make sure you are playing the right character for the job.
But is it "Just another MMO"?
Game play can be divided into a few areas: Open world grinding, Open world rifts, Dungeons, PVP.
PvP: This is done similar to other titles. There are battlegrounds with specific objectives. These are instanced and can either be really fast, or take a long time depending on the teams. PVP can also happen in Open World. Both reward you with points that can be spent on gear.
Grinding: Unfortunately, the quest grind is pretty much here to stay. At least it is very story driven in Rift. I do think they have you running around a bit too much, but this keeps the areas fresh and interesting, so I was pretty much ok with it once I got my mount (about level 15).
Rifts: This is a blast! You get another type of currency for closing Rifts and defeating "Footholds" in the open world. Every so often there is a major incursion which takes a large group to defeat. These are so much fun, everyone turns out to defeat the invasions from the rifts, and I always stop and close any Minor Rifts I find (it takes a small group to close a Major Rift). Footholds can easily be defeated in a couple of minutes by one person, depending on their level.
Dungeons: Pretty much your standard group of 5: 1 tank, 3 dps, a healer. So far the dungeons are a little shorter than some other games, but are still challenging and offer nice rewards. Definitely worth the time and effort!
Overall: I will definitely be playing this game a lot for the foreseeable future! The mix of Guild Wars, World of Warcraft, and Age of Conan is the perfect mix in my opinion. Finally, a gaming company learned from the mistakes of others and made very few of their own!

Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn Review

Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Its graphics may be a bit dated (they were even when the game came out) but if you can look beyond that, this is one seriously awesome collection. Baldur's Gate 2 has incredible RPG depth, a strong tactical aspect, and great replay value. The expansion is bigger than most, and adds significant epic-level capabilities for your characters.
The game picks up several years after the events in Baldur's Gate, and continues the plot. If you didn't play that first game (a shame- go get it) there are a few quick recaps of the key points. You can play in single play mode, in which case you make your one main character (or import from Baldur's Gate); multiplay with just you, in which you can make your whole party; or multiplay with friends, in which everyone can make and control one or more characters. In any case, your party has up to six people at a time, and you can dismiss or add characters at will.
Add to this a whole lot of classes, including special 'kits' that are akin to 3rd edition prestige classes (save that you can take them immediately) and you have a whole lot of room for party customization. There's a host of NPCs that can join your party, some better than others, but all very interesting and with unique (sometimes very extensive) side quests. You can have romantic relationships with some of these potential party members, and some will even have romances with other NPCs.
Almost all of the dialogue in the game is spoken, and although there's not much full motion video, when there is it's well done. The plot advances through chapters, and there are numerous side quests that take you to many varied game world locations. The rewards for some of these quests are awesome, and some of the monsters you'll run into are equally so. This is where the tactics come in- your party composition is crucial for winning these big fights. For example, dealing with that red dragon is going to be exceedingly difficult without some protection from fire and fear effects. There are also many ways to solve the various problems you run into. For example, a thief laying some traps in a doorway can turn a tough band of charging enemies into so much cannon fodder. Then again, if you don't have a thief or aren't a very subtle type, you can just fireball the lot of them and clean up what's left with a good old-fashioned sword charge.
I mentioned earlier that the graphics are dated. This is true, but it doesn't really detract from the play. The area backgrounds are actually very nice, though also largely static. Spell effects look decent, if less flashy than newer games like Neverwinter Nights. The music and voice acting are also top-notch, and don't get old even after many times through the game (which is likely to happen once you get hooked). The latter in particular really lends character to the people you meet. It's a testament to the developer's success in this regard that you'll have strongly varied feelings toward nearly all of the NPCs- just as you would expect of real people.
As for the story, it is superb. The scope is truly epic, and the side quests actually interesting. This is more than can be said about much of Neverwinter Nights, for all of the polish and vaunted expandability of that title. Though generally linear, the campaign doesn't seem to be linear. When replaying, though you'll be going to the same places and doing the same things, the different characters you have along will make it seem like a different game. There's also a ton of secrets and hidden areas- you might just find something you didn't see before.
That said, it's worth mentioning that although there are no official tools for editing the game, there are unofficial ones. These have been put to good effect, and there's a host of mods and add-ons available for free download. There's even a mod that converts the interface to Icewind Dale's more attractive look (though you must have that game for it to work) and thus significantly improves the graphics and changes the somewhat clunky 2nd edition rules to 3rd edition.
I think the value of this title can be summed up by the fact that I played it through at least 5 times, which is something I've only done for two or three other games (the original Baldur's Gate being one of them). Even if you're not into D&D, don't particularly care for RPGs, and don't give a hoot about Forgotten Realms, this game comes highly recommended.

Norton Ghost 14.0 Review

Norton Ghost 14.0
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Symantec Ghost 14 seems to be a merge of features between Symantec's older Ghost product line with Symantec's disastrous "save and restore" product, which for some strange reason is still offered in version 2.0.
You can see my reviews for Save and restore here on amazon to see why my copy ended up in the garbage can.
I have been using ghost in its various incarnations for several years, when it used to run off a floppy drive, so i am very familiar with its capabilities. Symantec Ghost 14 can backup files or your entire computer's drives if so desired to another computer on a network or to a USB drive. It can do this on a schedule.
The features of Ghost 14 on paper are impressive, so i decided to give it a test by installing the product on my laptop and creating a complete backup to a network drive on another computer. The entire backup was completed in less than 15 minutes. Then i decided to create an updated recovery disc for my laptop to do a full recovery, Ghost automatically recognized the fact that my original Recovery Disk had been burned to a rewriteable disc, and proceeded to erase and burn a new updated version on the same disc.. very impressive.
Unfortunately, as soon as rebooted my laptop with the Recovery Disc and i put an ip address on the interface (i am not running DHCP on my network) i wasn't able to connect to the computer containing the backup, due to some kind of authentication error.. so no matter what i did, i wasn't able to get past this hurdle.. so i am left with a complete computer backup i am not able to access..
Imagine, how would you feel if you computer died and you weren't be able to restore, thanks to Symantec buggy software, despite having an entire backup of it???
What is the point of all the countless fancy features if this product fails at its most useful feature.. which is to restore your computer's hardrive in case of failure?
For all intents and purposes, Norton Ghost 14 is another piece of semi-functional software.. with partially working features, pretty much like every product Symantec makes...
I don't recommend purchasing this product, unless you are somewhat computer literate and are able to get through the bugs that are present in this product.
UPDATE 1: When i booted my laptop using the recovery disc, every time i tried to map the recovery point share on a computer on the network, i keep on getting the following error message: A specified logon session does not exist.
After doing some online research, i was able to figure out how to fix this error by entering the name of the computer followed by the login name in the following format compname\username when prompted for a user / password to map the drive. I will post another update to see if recovery works as advertised.
UPDATE 2: When i booted my laptop using the updated recovery CD, and i mounted the recovery point using the compname\username trick to authenticate, i was able to dump the entire laptop's drive image and do a full recovery. The catch is that i work on the field, and I was able to find out the solution on my own, but less savvy users will probably have to resort to having to call Symantec, etc etc, so when you purchase this product expect to spend some time making it work and make sure you TEST the recovery process if you can.. because the last thing you want to find out is that your recovery process doesn't work when you really need it.
UPDATE 3: I tried to create a backup of my Windows 2000 Dell laptop.. but Norton Ghost 14 doesn't support Windows 2000.. so beware.
UPDATE 4: Unlike Norton's disastrous Save and Restore, Ghost doesn't go on the internet and check the serial number every time you install it on a computer, I know this after i installed my copy of Save and Restore one too many times to one of my 4 computers and the serial number became "blacklisted" and the product ended up in the garbage can.
This good news means that if you want want to make backups of multiple computers, you can just purchase ONE copy of Norton Ghost.
UPDATE 5: Feb 2009
I just tried to move a hardrive with a bootable partition (Windows XP) and a data partition to a bigger SATA Drive with Norton Ghost 14.
After installing the new hardrive on the computer and partitioning using Windows XP, i used Ghost to copy the bootable partition and the data partition to the new drive's partitions.
The results were as follows:
1-The bootable partition copied ok, and the new drive boots from the partition, the only problem is that when i try to login into Windows XP, the system logs me off inmmediately. This is the same problem i had with Norton Save and Restore.
2-I spent over an hour copying the data partition using Ghost 14.. but at the end, the program gave me an error message telling me that the copy couldn't be copied because the system had ran out of memory.
The data that i tried to copy was around 300Gb.
After the Ghost error, all the data the program had supposedly copied was inaccessible because the partition couldn't be mounted by Win XP, so i had to reformat the new partition using the disk utilities in Win XP and use Microsoft's FREE copy utility ROBOCOPY to copy all the files from one partition to another.
The copy worked fine.
Norton Ghost couldn't do something a FREE utility can.
I ended up connecting a CD drive to the computer to boot from a Ghost 2003 CD, and used that program to copy the C partition to the new drive and was finally able to migrate to the new hardrive.
UPDATE 6: 2009-11-14
I was forced to use Norton Ghost 14 to update my computer's laptop hardrive since Ghost 2003 cannot backup an active drive to a firewire connected external drive.
So this is what i did:
1-I booted my laptop with the Norton Ghost 14 CD created specifically for my laptop when i installed the software on it.
2-i backed up my entire laptop hardrive to an external 1tb firewire drive.(bear in mind trying to backup the drive while Windows was running failed every time, so i had to boot from the Norton CD and back it up the old fashioned way.. just like in Ghost 2003!)
3-Physically replaced the laptop's old drive with the new one.
4-I booted my laptop with the Norton Ghost 14 CD. The software was able to find the recovery point in the firewire drive and i was able to do a recovery to the new drive. At no point i was prompted to restore the MBR or to make the new drive bootable.
5-You will think all is well, right? but when i booted the laptop off the new drive, what do you think happened?
Nothing.. the drive refused to boot and i got a blank screen, because it didn't occur to the geniuses at Symantec that most new drives don't have bootable master records (MBR), so the data is in the new drive, but it won't boot.
So i had to get my Windows XP CD, do a dummy installation so the drive boots, and then dump the Norton Ghost Image on the drive AGAIN.
Only when i tried to restore the drive a second time i was prompted to restore the original drive image and the drive MBR.. What a joke!
Symantec is the Microsoft of security and disk utility software, their consumer and pro-level software is garbage, and since their horrible products can't compete in the marketplace, the only way they can get market share is to buy other competing products / companies such as Altiris, Partition Magic and many others!
This is the last time i brother with Symantec's garbage software.
After this, i am uninstalling all traces of Ghost from my laptop and i looking for some other software package.. there has to be something better out there than this piece of junk.
Needless to say, don't waste your time purchasing Norton Ghost 14, unless you want to spend endless hours trying to make it work.

I am really enjoying this game.
I never finished DS I, I thought it was tedious. DS II fixed the problems of DS I and I played the sequel through to the end. There wasn't anything about the gameplay compelling enough to make me want to go through it a second time for the extra charactor slot, but it was a REALLY enjoyable H&S while it lasted.
I haven't experienced any of the bugs the one reviewer did, my characters imported right away. I'm having fun well into the second act.
If you enjoyed DS II, you should buy this.
