Plants Vs. Zombies Review

Plants Vs. Zombies
Average Reviews:

I'm pretty much writing this review just to bump up the overall score because it doesn't deserve getting rated a 1 out of 5 stars just because this version is missing the Thriller Zombie.
Other than the missing Thriller Zombie (has be replaced by a Disco Zombie due to legal reasons), this is the pretty much the same game you know and love. Tower Defense with plants and zombies. Whee! You also get a pretty decent Zombie figurine and the ability to create your own zombies. Fun for the whole family.

3D Ultra Pinball Creep Night (Jewel Case) Review

3D Ultra Pinball Creep Night (Jewel Case)
Average Reviews:

I have always been a pinball lover, but was skeptical to try pinball software. Would it really be like playing the machine? With this software package, the answer clearly is yes. Yes! And what a surprise the animations and graphics have been. Little goblins whith wiggeling butts tease you to shoot at them, monsters show up out of the wood work, ghosts snatch your ball or take you to a cemetary to shoot skeletons ... It'll take a while to discover all the little surprises each of the three tables has in store for you. And just when you thought you had it all figured out, you just might discover a little extra memory game where you have goblins ringing bells, the sequence of which you have to copy, or a monster shows up where you have never seen one before. Switch between the tables during the game or stick with the one you're on, in either case you're in for hours of fun.

Hunting Unlimited 2011 Review

Hunting Unlimited 2011
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you a fan of Hunting Unlimited 2009, back quickly away from this monstrosity.
Major points of disappointment:
1. No "Free Hunt". You are limited to preset "scenarios" and have no control over the animals encountered. Every scenario in this game is goal oriented.
2. Very few, unrealistic, weapons. Most of which must be unlocked before they can be used. A "Sawed off shotgun" is one of the more powerful weapons and has better range and power ratings than a 30-30 rifle.
3. Animal reaction to your actions has been all but removed. The animals in your area will only react to your shots if you happen to be shooting in their general direction. An animal very near you but out of your perspective range will continue to wander around as if you weren't even there.
4. You can only hear animals if you happen to be facing them. Once you turn to the point where the animal is not in your view, you can no longer hear them. A bear running toward you sounds like someone beating on a timpani and a wolf sounds like someone shuffling papers. The bears and wolves are the only 'dangerous' animals in the game. The moose and elk are as placid as a petting zoo lamb.
5. No more accessories. No bait, no rattles or calls, no 4-wheeler, no horse, no portable stands, etc. Nothing but a bottle of some kind of spray when 'hunting' in stalking mode.
6. "Kill shots" are completely unrealistic. While hunting with a shotgun it is very easy to take down a charging grizzly from well over 200 yards with a single shot. Every time.
7. Actually tracking and stalking the animals is impossible. No tracks are left behind, no sign at all. When in 'stalking' mode, a RADAR screen in the upper left corner shows you exactly where the next target animal is located. All one needs to do is run over there and shoot the animal.
8. All shots are either instant kills or complete misses. No more tracking an injured animal using tracks or blood trails.
9. No need to 'bag and tag' your kills. After shooting an animal it simply falls over, lies there for a few seconds, then disappears.
10. Anything that moves is fair game. No consequences for shooting an illegal animal.
11. *EVERY* animal is a trophy. No more selecting the 'best' from a group and trying to get the drop on them. You see something moving? Shoot it.
12. No shooting range.
Overall this 'game' is a complete waste of time and money. It is nothing more than a shooting gallery game and a MAJOR step backward for ValueSoft. I, for one, am not looking forward to the release of Hunting Unlimited 2012.
Now, excuse me while I go delete this garbage from my computer and go back to playing Hunting Unlimited 2009.

Split / Second Review

Split / Second
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A combination made in heaven. This was like when I watched the movie SNAKES ON A PLANE, my reaction was: of course, why did no one ever think of this before?!
There is a great number of driving and racing games, some better than others. There is even a number of shooting&driving games. However, SPLIT/SECOND is a breed on its own.
When was the last time you had to race a collapsing overpass, dodge the load of an out-of-control crane or a wrecking ball, drive under a crash-landing cargo plane, survive a missile-firing helicopter attack, drift in an exploding airport hangar, or survive a Terminator-2 canal race?
Drifting (no wall-slamming penalty!), drafting, sling-shooting, close-calling crashes and General-Leeing your car will fill your Power Bar. Once it is full you can unleash PowerPlay attacks onto your AI opponents. And, trust me, you will hate them! From start to finish they will be scrapping your tailpipe - and you only need to slip for a split second to total your car. You can leave paint all over the walls but the moment your grill touches that central pillar or dumpster you are totaled. The good news is that respawning only takes a second - no time for the adrenaline to subside.
Choose the best car for the track and handling it will be no problem. Nevertheless, this is not an easy game - and, frankly, I missed those. Nowadays everything seems designed to be breezed through and quickly move on to the next game. Not this baby. Random events (not to mention unexplored shortcuts) make racing the same track feel like a new experience so memorizing the tracks will not be of much help. You will have to really hone your skills in order to advance. Quick advice: remap the PowerPlay buttons to something convenient as timing your attacks is essential.
Fallen behind and only half a lap to go? Well, drive your A-game - and make sure to... drop a burning bus on the opponents you could not overtake.Careful though: this knife cuts both ways. First, you must learn to avoid the attacks you triggered yourself and then you must be ready to speed around the ones your opponents spring on you. Split-second decisions are required throughout.
You are not a passenger so stop gawking at the scenery. Strap in and drive for your life!
The visuals will keep you at the edge of your seat and the screeching and explosion sounds will make the hairs at the back of your neck stand up every time. This is like actually being in a Hollywood summer action-blockbuster. My only gripe is that there are no licensed cars (what we drive is always sleek and gorgeous but, sorry, no Gallardos, no DB9s, no R8s, no Shelbies...) whereas customizing our rides is kept to a minimum. That would have taken the experience to a whole new level!
SPLIT/SECOND, obviously, is more of a well-made arcade than a simulation game. And it is great FUN!
I had initially awarded the game 4 stars but any game that brings you home early to experience it again deserves full marks.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Split/Second is an intense action racing game set within a reality television show. Competitors will vie to be the first to the finish line in a made-for-TV city set rigged to blow with the ultimate goal of becoming the season champion. Players in Split/Second don't just collide with other vehicles to knock them from the track, but can also trigger devastating events that drastically alter the dynamics of the race. Players must use pinpoint timing to obliterate huge structures and towering TV set pieces to tactically alter the track or create entirely new routes.

Blur Review

(More customer reviews)
The main reason why I've made this review is purely because of the review right below me, which complains about requiring a "separate video card" to play. But I'll get to that in a moment.
This is basically a fast paced arcade racer with powerups. Take a game like Gran Turismo and mix it in with some Mario Kart powerups, and you have this awesome, awesome game. The goal of the game is to drive around in your vehicle of choice, all of them real life cars, and basically blast each other to smithereens with powerups that are strewn throughout the track. Driving is VERY arcade style - you can accelerate, brake, and e-brake and you steer left and right. Handling is fairly straightforward. Cars handle very much like they do in Ridge Racer. Instead of getting busted up after just one hit from an attack, your car has a health meter, which goes down as you take hits from enemy attacks. If your health meter depletes, your car gets wrecked, and you're put out of commission for a short period. You can pick up powerups to repair your car back to full health so this doesn't happen, but that can get challenging when you have 19 other players trying to fight for first place. Yes you heard me, you can have up to 20 opponents racing simultaneously, both in single player and multiplayer mode!
That's the basic mechanics. Variety-wise, you have multiple modes you can choose from. You have Blur's equivalent of Last Man Standing, where your main goal is to just smash the daylights out of your opponents, racing, where you go around a track and try to get first place while fighting off attacks from your opponents, hardcore "simulation" racing, where powerups are disabled and your racing skills are put to the test, team modes, and much more.
Plus, the game has unlockables both in single player AND multiplayer mode which are earned through "bulbs" from placing as one of the top 3 in races and through fans you gain from blowing other cars up, completing in-course challenges, and doing fancy moves like drifts - these are basically more or less like points. You can actually play multiplayer LOCALLY (great LAN party game!), online, or even do a 4 player split screen with four controllers (freakin insane). As you gain fans and bulbs, you unlock more mods, more cars, and more courses and game modes to play. Since the unlockables are available for both single player and multiplayer modes, you'll have twice the amount of replayability, and you'll still have a very solid single player game even if you can't go multiplayer. The online play is dedicated, so you don't have to worry about the host getting any sort of ping advantage.
Oh, and this game has NO rubber band AI. If you get in front, however, expect to be attacked by the "blue shell" of this game, a powerup that drops 3 pits of lightning that will damage and slow down your car (but they can be dodged, unlike the blue shell). The AI is challenging because it is quite relentless in its aggression and will do whatever it takes to stop you from gaining first. They will smash into you, launch powerups, and gang up on you if it means they'll get past you. They'll dodge your attacks, purposely block you from picking up powerups, and generally do what a regular player will do to win. And if the action is too hard for you, you can dial down the difficulty to something a bit more manageable too.
Soundtrack is excellent, a bit of techno and rock mixed in. Nothing out of this world spectacular, but nothing that particularly bad. You'll be too busy spending most of your time smashing up other cars to really care.
Unfortunately, this game does not support a third party controller. It does support XBox 360 controllers. You can use 3rd party software out there to have your regular controller emulate a XBox 360 controller, however, and IMO this game definitely needs a gamepad for you to get the fullest out of it. The other problem here, however, is that the game doesn't allow you to customize the controls, only pick from a small set of preconfigured layouts, which is very un-PC-like. You can play this game on keyboard, and it's still very playable on it, so don't let the lack of direct third party controller support stop you!
Graphics are top notch. Everything looks well done, incredibly detailed, and very colorful. The cars look a little bit too shiny, and that fits in well with the overall theme of the game, which has more of a hyper-realistic/fantasy feel to it than it actually looking like real life. This makes sense, as the game lets you use powerups that you'll NEVER see in real life and be able to bust up expensive cars that we'll never get to drive. The game is also rather light on the graphics card; I'm running at full framerate with a GTX 260 at 1680 x 1050. Unfortunately, you can't tweak the graphics settings that much like you can in other games - you just have a general setting to adjust the visual detail and the ability to switch off or on fullscreen and vsync and change the antialiasing. That con makes the game feel like a somewhat not 100%-done PC port, since the game doesn't try that hard to take advantage of what makes the PC a unique gaming platform: the ability to run games at graphics settings that surpass that of their console counterparts.
Lastly, I'd like to address the poster below me who bought this game. This is a CURRENT GENERATION PC game that is meant for GAMERS. If you've never bought a PC game before, you will learn your first responsibility is to look up the system requirements, which are easily available online. If you want to play any half-decent PC game, you WILL need a separate graphics card (and not even a ridiculously expensive one!), which will allow you to play the game with graphics that will surpass those of the consoles. There are PC games out there that can work with integrated graphics cards, yes, but those are actually the *EXCEPTION* instead of the rule. Please, PLEASE do not rate this game one star for something you failed to look up yourself. For anyone else, buy this game! Although it lacks the configurability of most PC-native games, it's still fun, and is cheaper than its console versions. With the price drop on Amazon, it's actually cheaper to buy it here than Steam too!
