AutoSketch 8 Review

You'll need to invest some time to complete the series of "Two-Minute Tutorials"; however, they really do take about 2 minutes each to complete and they provide an excellent foundation to begin using the software effectively. As an entry-level 2D drawing tool, I can't imagine ever using all of the bells and whistles. Fortunately it's fairly straightforward to find/use the functions you're interested in after only using the program for a short time. Online help is always a few clicks away but would still like to see a hardcopy User's Guide included in the box (you can download/print the User's Guide but it's 400 pages...). Overall a very good product.

AutoCAD LT 2002 Review

AutoCAD LT 2002

What I found after buying this software is that it's very intuitive and easy to learn. I've tried several other CAD packages, but AutoCAD LT's "Learning Assistance", which is a tutorial-based and multimedia learning tool, accelerated my technical drawing tasks in no time! Being a software developer, CAD isn't really my field, but I'm pretty confident about using it in the future because it really helped me finish my project in less time than expected. The "Getting Started Guide" (included in the box) provides step-by-step instructions on all of AutoCAD LT 2002's features using interesting and real-life sample files. Although it doesn't run on Windows 95, it works on all other Windows operating systems, including the forthcoming Windows XP! I'm sure it's the best value for money and I'd recommend it to anyone who needs great 2-D/3-D software!

QuickCAD 8 Review

I am an electrical engineer who generates 2D cad drawings when not writing computer control systems code or managing a project. As such, I always find I am rusty with the command line commands in AutoCad after being away from it for weeks to months. I have developed a dislike of AutoCad as a result. After having for years struggled to reclimb the learning curve with both the DOS and Windows versions of AutoCad I went in search of a cad product that would be user friendly, without the need for remembering the command line commands, and use a Windows tool bar interface with click and drag.I have found the AutoDesk product QuickCad makes excellent professional quality electrical and P&ID drawings. However, when attempting to save a QuickCad file as a DWG file, several things get lost in the translation.
Specifically, text size does not translate to Autocad as it was created in QuickCad. If one can live without the need to translate QuickCad files into AutoCad files, this is a very good cad package at a great price.

Start designing on a computer right away with Autodesk QuickCAD 8. QuickCAD is a design program with plenty of productive features that let users make technical designs and diagrams. With drag-and-drop ease, even beginners can start creating in QuickCAD.
The program features a familiar Microsoft Windows interface, the use of AutoSnap to easily align objects, and database capabilities. Users can also access and send drawings in Autodesk DWG design file format. And new text features such as in-place text editing make it easy to annotate drawings.
Autodesk QuickCAD 8 allows users to translate technical information into visually precise 2-D drawings and presentations. Build information-rich drawings even if you have no previous computer design experience. QuickCAD has a simple interface for beginners that guides users through startup.

Corel Painter IX.5 Review

Corel Painter IX.5
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you are an artist who works with "wet media"--oils, watercolor, magic markers, pen and ink or if you are a digital artist who creates only with pixels of light on a computer, you should seriously look at Painter IX. This is without a doubt, digital art software at its very best.
I've used a form of Painter since its very first version, which was called Sketcher. This was back before 1990, I am pretty sure, and Sketcher, which was a Fractal Designs product, came in a snazzy cigar box (because many sketch artists keep their charcoals in this handy container.) The software did grey-scale renderings of drawings into charcoal, pencil or ink and it could be used to sketch on graphics tablets.
After Sketcher came Painter, which was sold amusingly in a paint can and did color rendering of oil, watercolor, pencil and inks. Eventually, Painter was sold to Corel, who had the expertise in graphics design software to take Painter to a whole new level. While previous versions of Painter had some idiosyncrasies, Painter IX has been revised to match current graphics capabilities of computers, and has been debugged to the point that it is a pure pleasure to use. As a result, professional designers of everything from brochures to fast cars use Painter instead of real media or in conjunction with art media to create some stunning digital creations. In addition, wet media artists now routinely use digital art software to visualize, compose and test designs before doing them by hand. I do this myself; I take photos or sketches and try out palettes to see how a certain color scheme works. Or I cut and paste elements of a composition to visualize the painting before I sketch it on paper. My own medium is watercolor, and I find it a lot more comforting to have a plan of attack before I hit that scary white (and pricey) piece of watercolor paper. Visualizing my composition on the PC screen is a very useful tool.
If you had tried Painter before and were less than thrilled, you should take a look again. If you have never used a digital arts package and want to be serious about digital art, I can't think of another product I'd recommend.
So, let's get a detailed look into Painter IX and see what it does:
Art Media:
1. Literally 100's of brushes that can be modified in size and quality (hairness, spray direction, stroke depth, and "taught" your personal stroke on the graphics tablet.) You can create brushes, and even make "image hoses"--a way to spray a graphic and paint with say, berries, leaves, architectural elements. You can make your own image nozzle out of any graphic element and even have it shaded with a drop shadow. The image hose is a lot of fun--scrapbookers can find a lot of uses for it as it's rather like a digital rubber stamp.
2. 30 plus media, like oil, impasto, charcoal, crayon, ink, gouache, watercolor, airbrush, oil and chalk pastel, pencil, photo filters, and even woodcut and sumi-e. They are realistic to the point where you can smear the oil around--the only thing is you don't smell the turpentine. The texture of canvas or paper comes through under the media according to the amount you choose, and you can light the finished work to highlight texture and shine.
3. Textured papers like canvas and watercolor. You can input your own textures to make a customized paper. There are pattern fills like cloth and pebbles, and you can make patterns to use as background fill. Any image can be captured to make a texture or pattern.
4. Wet media --like ink, wet oils, watercolor. A wet layer allows you to push the paint around as if the surface were wet. It can be "dried."
5. A mixing palette to mix paints as one would on a real palette.
6. Cloning--copying a picture and then rendering it as if you had a tracing paper over top a real picture. You can grab portions of the picture with your tablet stylus and brush them into oils, watercolors, chalk. You can auto-clone and create a sketch from a photo.
7. Photo filters: a good set of filters used to modify digital photos and scans are included.
8. Typical adjustment features to modify color, remove color, change contrast and light/dark.
9. Animation tools and web design tools. Many graphics software packages have these (Adobe Photoshop, Macromedia Fireworks) but these allow you to create web graphics with a handpainted or handdrawn look. For anime artists, this could be a huge plus.
10. A scripting engine that lets you record your own operations and play them back with one click to automate your work or create movies. Scripts are automatically saved --meaning you can recover work if your PC crashes.
The major improvements in Painter IX are noteworthy:
1. A 175 page printed spiral-bound manual to get you started and an online help that looks like a spiral-bound manual with everything from online videos, art examples to inspire you and recipes. The tutorial movies from Lynda.com are included in the license. The learning tools are amazing; the spiral bound manual stays open and is easy to navigate. The online tools are lavish and very helpful, because Painter is powerful and there IS a learning curve to get into the most advanced features.
2. Kai's Power Tools (filters for photography) are included. This popular standalone package of photo adjustment tools has Gel, Goo, LensFlare, Lightning, Pyramid Paint, Reaction, and ShapeShifter.
3. There are many new shortcuts, most welcome of which is Quick Clone, reducing the number of steps needed to clone a picture down to a single click.
4. Mixing oils on a palette is more like real media.
5. The watercolor has been sped up to lightning-fast; it was rather slow in previous versions.
6. I found far fewer bugs or crashes--my graphics card is not particularly new and could be bumped up a bit (I have onboard graphics and I could do with adding a better video card) but I still found Painter IX faster and far easier to use than Painter 8.0. The watercolor function was about 10 times faster, at least.
Summary: If you think you'd like to do digital art, this is the one package I'd recommend.
Minimum computer requirements:
· Macintosh: Mac OS X 10.2.8 or higher, 500 MHz, 128 MB RAM (256 recommended), 1024x768 monitor resolution, 395 MB disk space.
· Windows: Windows 2000 or XP, 500 MHz Pentium II (or higher), 128 MB RAM (256 recommended), 1024x768 monitor resolution, 380 MB disk space.
Recommended:
A graphics tablet is a must--you can use a mouse, but you won't get the benefits of real media feel without a tablet. The package can use various tablets, but is optimized for the Intuos (WACOM) line of tablets.
Update your graphics card and graphics memory if you have an older PC.

CorelDRAW 10.0 Review

I work with Corel Draw since verson 4, and it has steadily improved ever since!
RAVE ----------------------- When I heard about version 10 I was excited and couldn't wait to get it, especially RAVE. Since I work with Flash 4 and 5 and don't like the interface, I had to have a look at RAVE, which produces Flash, and it was suberb! Soomth, simple interface, fast outputs and errorfree exports. Awesome!
Photopaint ---------------------------- I am laso using Photoshop 5 and got rid of Corel's Photopaint earlier this year - why? Because it's not worth it. The quality of Photopaint is so poor and it is totally useless because the grids and the rulers are no help to produce webgraphic slices and mouseOnOver effects. Photoshop is the only program I use to make web graphics and it is perfect! I do not like Photopaint, because the output quality is totally discouraging and the typography is so terrible I once had to throw away all my graphics. I then did the whole work again with Photoshop and it was perfect!
Draw ---------------------- Corel 9 was somewhat my favorite so far, because coming to a useful graphics was very simple, because of the redesign. Corel 10 has a new interface and it is even easier to drop shadows and alter shades and forms.
All in all it is ver ystable and a little faster than 9. If you used Corel 9 intensively and need suberb vector graphics for printing and desktop publishing, go for it. But forget Photopaint. RAVE is definitely an alternative to Macromedia's, thoughit does not offer command-line ActionScript and is not as complex as Macromedia's Flash program, it can produce simple animations easily.

I am longtime user of DesignCAD. Started with DesignCAD 95. I've also compared numerous CAD programs against it in my quest for POWER and USEABILITY.
While other programs offer more for a price . . . this software has been my consistent favorite. EASY to learn, and capable beyond what most users will need for 2D drafting and 3D modeling.
Customizable menus and toolboxes, as well as macro and Basiccad scripting give uses of all levels control over the design process. Keyboard shortcuts quickly become second-nature and speed up the process considerably.
From custom equipment trailers, conveyors and farm equipment, to home remodeling and aircraft parts, this program has been a pleasure. Even complex curved surfaces and transparent solids are within reach of the average user.
The new owner: IMSI, is less responsive than the former: Upperspace Inc, but the user forum at is a treasure trove of answers and help from advanced DesignCAD users. It's one of the best CAD forums on the web.

Comic Book Creator 2.0 has a ton of stuff for those of us who want to put together our projects. But it has one huge flaw...
its Activation Key expires after 3 install uses. So if you have to reinstall, and you probably will, the database seems to trunch itself every so often, causing you to either constantly repath every folder each time you want to find something, or reinstall to fix it, after the third time, your lovely Activation Key... no longer registers through their servers. There are a lot of ways they could have done this to prevent pirating or people using your key too much, but they took the low road and after 3 installiations and registrations with that Key, your $40 software from Planet Wide Media is worthless.
If this thing hadn't been given to me as a gift, I would be all over them like flies to.. you know... but it's not worth it now.
Anyone who buys this product, BE WARNED! 3 Registrations with that Key, and you'll be REBUYING this just to use it again! They don't give replacement Keys out for free, they charge 39.99 for a new one! No Exceptions!

Autodesk AutoCAD LT 2004 Review

This software is probably a good value if you intend to use and keep it for a long time. Read the end user licence carefully. Autodesk license agreements prohibit the sale of license from person to person. The only exception would be when most of the assets of a company are sold to another company. If this does not concern you, great. If you're like me and want the option to resell in the future, not so great.

This is advertised as being a great tool for creating home plans, but the features that you'd want to use are only included in the "Professional" version, which is $540. CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X4 Upgrade Review

CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X4 Upgrade
Average Reviews:

I come from the sign industry and a lot of sign shops use CorelDRAW. However, it would be NICE if Corel realized that they have such a following in that niche and would optimize DRAW for vinyl cutting. Phew! I've always wanted to get that off my chest.
Having said that it was worthwhile upgrading from version 12. I'm not sure that upgrading from X3 would have been worthwhile.
CorelDRAW's interface, particularly in editing bezier curves, has always made it my choice. I used Illustrator every single day at work but I have yet to figure out curve editing on it. :-P
Corel still does not match Adobe in the colour management area. They need to take this a little more seriously!
Corel needs to stop buying up companies and trying to market their products. Why did they buy Paintshop? They should have just continued to update Photopaint. Paintshop is just a drag on their developement resources and takes their programing team away from their core products.
Also, Corel is not taking website design integration seriously. They need something to compete with Dreamweaver. "Get with it guys! It is not just a print world anymore!" Also, why the devil did they stop developement of RAVE??? It disappeared a couple incarnations ago and doesn't look like it'll return.
Having said all that CorelDRAW X4 is a great vector illustration program and I can still do professional raster image editing with Photopaint. Their bitmap to vector tracing module can't be beat. All for much less than Adobe products.

I've used AutoSketch for years. Some mistake this tool for a graphics design tool, which it is not. It is a mechanical or architectural design tool. As such it is simple to use and produces accurate results. We use it in our business daily. I am pleased that they finally solved the printed line weight problem in this new version. CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X3 Review

CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X3
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
CorelDraw was my first foray into vector graphics back when version 3 showed up on my desk at the small "Mom and Pop" screenprinting shop i worked at. Back then, Corel came with OODLES of free fonts, clipart, manuals ... not to mention FREE technical support via a toll-free number.
i stayed with Corel exclusively until version 10 ... enduring countless patches, bugs and the dreaded "odd-numbered" curse (if you tried version 5 or 7, you feel my pain). Adobe Photoshop was always my photo-editing program of choice ... CorelPhotoPAINT just never quite "did it" for me.
Industry demands eventually delegated that i delve into Adobe Illustrator. Being already familiar with Adobe Photoshop's features, tools and "look and feel", Illustrator didn't present a huge, overbearing learning curve. In Illustrator, i found the same robust features as CorelDraw ... which wasn't what impressed me about Illustrator. Adobe's intuitive programs, and their ability to interact with one another ... seamlessly ... THAT is what won me over to Illustrator. Illustrator's ability to edit/create PDF's in their native format? WOW! Exporting LAYERED vector files to Photoshop ... with layers INTACT??? WOW!!! (i could go on)
Now, that being said ... there are STILL things that i prefer in CorelDRAW compared to Illustrator. The EXTRUDE function in corel is MUCH easier to utilize. The PowerClip function is more user friendly than Illustrator's "make clipping mask" function. The ability to customize/edit/add shortcut keys is an amazing feature. (again ... i could go on) (EDIT: i learned this IS possible in Illustrator CS2 via the EDIT/Keyboard Shortcuts, or Alt+Shift+Ctrl+K)
In regards to importing and exporting files from other applications, CorelDRAW wins, hands down. It boasts a ROBUST set of import and export filters, my favorite being the .eps import filter which lets you import an .eps while converting the fonts to curves DURING the import. This is a MUST HAVE if you work with an .eps file created on another computer whose fonts you lack. If i had a dollar for every .eps that pulls into Illustrator with fonts blown out ... i'd be independently wealthy. WHY Illustrator has never implemented this is beyond me.
So, to sum it up ... CorelDRAW is a great program ... but i can't imagine it being my ONLY vector drawing program. Just like in real life, you need a great team. This program, paired with Adobe Creative Suite, meets my needs perfectly.

I just wanted to add that a lot of the reviews in this section are for different software! Versions of photodeluxe 2.0 are different for PC's and Mac's!! The Mac's version 2.0 is comparable to photodeluxe 4.0 for PC, which is known to have a lot of "bugs" in it. Version 2.0 for PC is a much better version than 4.0...don't fix what is not broken!! So, please if you are a PC user thinking about purchasing version 2.0, ignore the comments about the Mac version as they do not apply to you. :o)

I have been a user of CorelDRAW for more than 10 years and have often used many other graphics products including the so-called industry leader Adobe products. All the applications work well with one another, and I've pushed it as hard as I can with some huge files, and it hasn't had any problems at all. This truely is an incredible release... thanks Corel!!!

Corel Painter Essentials 4 (Win/Mac) Review

I have children 14, 11, and 9, and I was looking for software that would appeal to their creative side. I am a fairly sophisticated software user, and used to do some programming myself, but had never really ventured into these type of painting/art programs.
Bottom Line: I was blown away by this program, totally impressed!!
Why?
#1 It's easy to use out of the box--- many of the controls are easy enough to figure out just by using them, it installs easy on both Mac and PC systems (I installed the program on both an old eMac and a low end Vista laptop successfully).
#2 It's really powerful--- once you really get into the software, it's amazing all the different brushes and textures and effects that you can do to make really impressive art.
#3 The tutorials are first rate--- A thick instruction manual that actually is well written, and actually teaches you about basic principles of art and painting. There are also a whole series of video tutorials included free. You can tell that a lot of hard work and frankly a lot of love went into this, which is a rarity for computer software these days.
#4 It's a great value--- For all you get, the price is very reasonable. And check the company's website, if you're still not sold they were at the time of this writing offering a 60 day free downloadable trial.
One more tip: Get even a low-price graphics tablet to go along with the software--- you'll be glad you did!

AutoCAD Freestyle Review

AutoCAD Freestyle

Final Update - On February 1, 2011, I went to the Autodesk website to check for additional updates and found that FreeStyle had been withdrawn from sale. Customer support stopped April 1, 2011.
Update 10/7/2010 - The first product update was released a couple of weeks ago. The major change fixes the first item below...you can now create custom symbols and store them in the library. I'm still in the process of evaluating the release and will update this note after I've used it a bit more.
Original Review:
The designers of a package like AutoCAD FreeStyle face a classic challenge: It needs to be easy to use for a novice, with enough features to be useful, yet not so powerful that it will cannibalize sales of the high-end (and much more expensive) AutoCAD systems. After spending a couple of days using AutoCAD FreeStyle, I think the designers set the bar way too low. The interface is simple and easy to learn, but far too many features are missing for FreeStyle to be a competitive program. That's not to say that FreeStyle can't be used to produce usable drawings; it just could be much better if it included basic features that are in other systems. Let me go through some of the areas that stood out...
Symbol Library - A library is a collection of symbols that are created once and then used on multiple drawings. FreeStyle comes with a collection of prebuilt symbols that are sufficient to get started, however it's not a complete enough library for a lot of projects - when I attempted to draw my sprinkler system, I discovered that there are no sprinkler components listed. In most CAD systems, this problem is addressed by allowing the user to build custom symbols. Once they're added to the library, they can be repeatedly used in future drawings. This release of FreeStyle doesn't have that capability. The symbols that come with the program are all that you've got, and that simply isn't enough. Incidentally, what's in the library is even a little strange... the Electrical Symbols tab includes five Gas and Water symbols along with the basic electrical symbols and the Building Components section only contains six fireplace facades...I'm sure that in real life there are more building components than just those.
Paper Size and Scale - When you start a new drawing, the program asks you to select the size of the paper and the object that you' re going to draw. e.g. you pick 8.5 x 11" paper and select that the page represents a 30' x 40' space. The scale shows that ¼" equals 1'. This makes perfect sense to anybody not used to using a CAD program, but is backwards from the norm...normally a designer would select a paper size and a scale.
Splines - Splines are a way of smoothly connecting a series of points. By adjusting the "handles", you can easily draw complex curves. FreeStyle doesn't have a way of drawing with splines. The menu allows you to draw with arc segments, straight lines and freehand "doodles". You can adjust the points of inflection on the doodle and eventually get to the desired curve, but it's not as easy as it seems. True spline capability would be easier.
Radius line joins - When drawing a floor plan, most lines meet with a sharp corner, but that's not always the case. Sometimes a drawing needs to have a rounded curve joining the two lines. Most 2-D drafting systems can do that automatically, but FreeStyle lacks that capability. You can manually accomplish the same thing by drawing a small arc, but why? You're only talking about a millisecond of computer time to have the program do it for you.
Double lines for walls - Often walls in architectural drawings are shown by two parallel lines, representing the inside and outside surfaces. Freestyle doesn't have that ability built-in. To do it correctly, it's a little more complicated that just having a double line as a selectable line type....you need to specify wall thickness, join corners correctly and scale appropriately as the drawing size changes. Again, all this can be done manually, but the basic idea is to have the program save time by doing the work for you. Incidentally, the work around is to simply draw a thick solid line for walls...look at all the sample drawings for examples.
Draw a wall of a house. Now drag a window or door from the symbol library and place it onto the wall. You'd think that the wall would break and allow the object to be inserted. It doesn't. OK, now manually break the wall into two separate line segments and drag the line ends apart to create the necessary break. That would work, if there was a way to break a line into two pieces, but there isn't. So you nuke the whole side of the house and redraw two separate line segments on either side of the door. That works...until you realize that the door is 6" to the left of where it should be.
The algorithm that calculates color fills is flaky. When you drag the fill icon over a fillable area, the area is highlighted with a light version of the fill color. It's a nice idea, so you can see exactly where the color's going. Unfortunately, a single open pixel prevents an area from filling. The highlighting, though, isn't nearly so discerning. It's not unusual to have an area highlight, but fail to fill when clicking on the mouse button. I also managed to fill in an object and then select the color and move it while leaving the outline behind...it was a little strange.
There's no instruction manual. You can get help for any of the commands by selecting that command and clicking the question mark icon. Clicking on the icon showing three stacked baby letter blocks takes you to the Freestyle website where there is more detailed information. It's annoying, though, not to have something you can skim through. I was trying to figure out how to color in a tree and it wasn't until I saw a picture in the on-line help that I realized that the color was coming from a filled in circle located behind the tree.
I could add more, but you get the idea. If the product manager at AutoDesk chooses, all of these can (and should) be fixed in a future release. Until then, though, I'm only giving FreeStyle two stars. The simple user interface is right on the mark for a non-technical consumer level product. The omitted features, though, cost it dearly in the ability to produce usable and functional drawings.

Autodesk Sketchbook Pro 2011 Upgrade Review

Autodesk Sketchbook Pro 2011 Upgrade
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I won't go into much details about the already existing solid features of Sketchbook Pro; rather the new features of the 2011 version:
- Better layer management: Transparency slider exists right on the layer slot in the Layers palette. No more separate transparency dialog box. (New) Basic layer blend modes are also a big plus.
- Toolbar also makes feature access much better.
- (Editable) Text layer (great new addition)
- Shape tools: circle, square, polyline.
- Basic image adjustment - saturation, contrast, etc.
- new custom brush settings like spacing jitter (I do wish they made the custom brush settings dialog scrollable, instead of having to close segments if the lower segments extend below the screen).
All in all, solid improvements (so far stable with no crashes or hiccups). SBP is vital, I think, for any digital artist. At $79 for full version, quite a deal; at $39 upgrade for 2010 owners, I think it is very worth the price.
