3D HOME ARCHITECT DELUXE 3.0 Review

3D HOME ARCHITECT DELUXE 3.0
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Outstanding product for the price. Its old but its as good as most of the more expensive "junk" for sale at home improvement and software stores.
Versions: 3d home 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0 are from the same company 5.0 is NOT the same and is incompatible. The newest version is Better Homes and Gardens Home Designer Suite 6.0 (much more expensive but has materials application options)
About 3.0
------------
3d. Its stable (3d modeling works but is not "realistic"). It is good enough to get a 3d feel though. 3.0 allows 3d object manipulation (drag or "resize" windows, doors, cabinets in 3d) and its done in 2d simultaneously).
Design is Straightforward. You should read the manual though if you want hip roofs with gable ends (roofs are trickier than walls). The stair tools are fairly straightforward but do not allow curves.
It would give it six stars ;-) if it had:
>> more than the basic snap on angles forces standard variance (45, 90 and 22.5 and such)
>> more objects in its library (very limited)
>> better rendering (its rudimentary compared to cool tools available today).
>> round or curved walls or stairs (you can approximate curved walls with short wall sections but oh what a pain)
Summary:
Overall even though it's a few years old and has a few problems I rate it 5 stars because its: DIRT CHEAP, fast, easy to use, good enough 3d rendering for space planning, allows 3d view object manipulation. It gets you up to speed with home design concepts very quickly and will get you diagrams you can build from faster than any other product I have seen. + does some good basic materials planning.
Definitely 5 "value" stars, you should be able to get it for under $10.

Punch Home Design Studio Pro (Mac) Review

Punch Home Design Studio Pro (Mac)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am sorely disappointed. Let me first say that I am a graphics professional, with image, video, and 3D modeling and animation background. So I did not expect incredible quality or even an easy to use program. But this thing is ridiculous.
First off YOU CANNOT IMPORT YOUR OWN TEXTURES. We are doing our kitchen and I was hoping to visualize materials, but even with a pretty extensive library of materials (I found the granite we wanted to use for counters), I could not import our tile options for the backsplash, and other things. Don't get me wrong you can import image files...as image planes, but not as textures!
Object library is stupid. 3 types of cabinets, categorized under lt cabinets and dk cabinets. Funny though not all cabinet shapes and sizes are there in all 3 colors. For example there may be a dark raised panel base cabinet, but not a light colored one. So then I use the custom workshop pro, where you can place any material on any object, and I think cool I can just texture each size and shape I need as needed. Yeah if you want to manually drag the texture to each shape (about 30) that make up each cabinet. Then I try the cabinet assistant, this should work for me right...wrong. The assistant has 4 steps, 1 pick cabinet type, 2 pick the direction the cabinet should face, 3 pick sizes and door style (shaker or raised panel) and your done! What about wood type and color? What about the other 10-20 styles of cabinet doors? Sure I can manually "paint" each cabinet but it seems to me that you should be able to layout the basic cabinets in your layout, and then globally choose a style/color for the entire kitchen.
moving in 3d "live view" is difficult at best.
you cannot move objects in a 3d view, only over head
measuring is by default done by measuring to the center of walls, not how I would measure my real space (wall to wall)
lighting and shadowing in rendered scenes is not even close to accurate (based on how objects are drawn from what I can tell)
I haven't even began to try and use any of the other "features" but I'm sure most of the program is as obtuse as the features I did try.
perhaps the pc version is better but overall this product sucks

Better Homes and Gardens Home Designer Suite 7.0 Review

Better Homes and Gardens Home Designer Suite 7.0
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently had the onerous job of drawing several plans for an addition to my home. I had the option of hiring an architect ($$$), or doing the drawings myself--and I selected this software to do the later.
First of all, I was successful drawing 5 or 6 floor plans for my existing home and the addition. However there were some "hiccups" and problems along the way. Here is what I found:
- I gave up trying to create a roof that would look anything like what I needed to draw. This was true for my existing home as well as the roof for the addition. This was by far the biggest problem with this software--I watched various on-line "videos," looked for help in forums, etc. but I was unable to render it correctly. Big problem because I was unable to get a good 3D or elevation drawing and actually was forced to draw these views by hand (well, a ruler and pencil). The auto-generated roof function is totally useless unless you have a very simple roof structure.
- My home has walls of various thicknesses--while the software provides preselected wall types, it doesn't allow you to customize the thickness (which was a problem). So I had to use a "canned" masonry type wall (12" thick I recall) to represent a wall I have that's not masonry and about 18" thick (don't ask!). If you have a newer home with "standard" walls, then you probably won't have this problem. In my case, I don't think I have any "standard" walls (home is relatively old).
- Button layout is confusing--they would be better off following typical "Windows" layout. Easy to forget what the icons represent.
- I tried to use this software to lay out a garden--however I literally couldn't find any of the plants I'm growing in their library. I understand there's an optional product can purchase (which I didn't), but they really should provide a better "basic" choice of plants.
- Very difficult to add dimension lines--it's difficult to explain unless you try to use it. For example, you "drag" across an area you want to add a dimension line...it invariably sets one of the points to the middle of a wall--which isn't what you want if you want the interior dimension of a room. They don't provide a simple way to click on two "spots" and produce a dimension line. If a dimension line sits inside of a wall, it's very difficult to select it...on several occasions I was forced to delete the wall because I couldn't select and move the dimension line out of the way. There's an alt-click (I recall) method to select overlapping objects, but it sometimes just doesn't work.
- Sometimes, no matter what I did, I could not get a precisely sized object (like a wall's length). They have a "nudge" tool for precise sizing that doesn't work on all objects. Software has a propensity to "snap" to grids or other objects which can be really annoying. You can disable it, but it's hidden in some menu somewhere.
And so on-- there were many other minor irritations that I worked through. The bottom line (sic) is that I was able to get most of the layouts done (except anything that would show a roof)--but I had to "fight" the software in order to do it.

Punch Home & Landscape Design Studio for the Mac with NexGen Technology Review

Punch Home and Landscape Design Studio for the Mac with NexGen Technology

Honestly, I bought this to replace it's bigger brother -- thinking it would be easier and more intuitive and friendly with their new nexGen technology. This product has a steep learning curves and a thick, but useless user guide that explains each tool but not how to use it. I've tried (in vain) to design my upcoming remodel. In both programs, I stopped, just plain overwhelmed and discouraged.

Turbocad has been around since 1985, consequently with this many years of development it is full featured and does 95% what Autocad does, 3D modeling is proably more advanced than Autocad.Uses the same ACIS engine that Autocad has. Version 12 Pro runs very well on Vista! The learning curve is the same as other large CAD programs. You will need the training books from IMSI and cd's as well as the training bundle from Cadcourse.com. The online CAD magazine Cadalyst gives it their highest review rating. Imports and exports just about every file format you can think of. Has a large color palette, and every imaginable drawing tool! Great for Engineering, Computerized Numerical Control and Architectual pro quality work. Also can do technical illustration. While the Pro version is full featured, the Deluxe version is pretty good except it only does basic 3d, not advanced 3d like the pro version does. Is a serious engineering cad/arch tool. Plug-ins available. Does scripts. Upgradable. Great CAD program!!

I have really enjoyed this program. I am using it just for fun. Over the years I have purchased several of these by different companies. All were hard to use and frustrating. This is easy to use and works like the tutorials show. The tuorials are short and on just one small topic. This makes it easy to follow. I was able to create a complete dream house, including kitchens and bathrooms, after watching about 5 of them. The 3D navigation is easy to use and very beautiful to see what you created. I highly recommend this product.

Punch Home & Landscape Design Suite with NexGen Technology Review

Punch Home and Landscape Design Suite with NexGen Technology
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this after using the Better Homes & Gardens Home Designer Suite. At first, it looked like it had potential as it appeared to be much more flexible and feature laden. Unfortunately, it has too many problems. Simple things like selecting walls and moving them, copy and paste, and 3d walk-through are either poorly implemented or bug-laden. I was hoping to find a support release that would improve on what appears to be a first run, buggy release - but there is none.
I searched their forums and they don't even have a dedicated forum for this product. I contacted support and inquired about maintenance releases and dedicated product forums (like they have for their other products) and was told they have none and suggested I contact tech support. I don't need to beta test software and spend time with tech support for basic functions that should be implemented properly - so I'm sending it all back for the money-back guarantee.
Also, the green features appear to be "thrown in". When clicking the special green icon, you just get a few tips that are mostly common sense. When you try to delve deeper, it's just a link to a page Punch! made that has categories of external links to external sites on the internet that could be found using a search engine.
As an aside, I've found TurboFloorplan from IMSI to be the best of the 3 programs I've tried - though I'm stilling learning it.

IMSI FloorPlan 3D Home Design Suite Version 10 Review

IMSI FloorPlan 3D Home Design Suite Version 10
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I own both the IMSI (FloorPlan 3D Version 5) and Punch (Architect 4000) software titles, and the following are my own conclusions. I have no vested interest in either manufacturer. I have a doctorate in Mechanical Engineering, and have taught interactive computer graphics, so I guess I am more than usually familiar with computers and design.
I designed my previous home using the IMSI package, and after using it to capture the design, I passed it along to a draftsman to create drawings for the permitting process. I found that the package was easy to use (although a bit weird), and that it generally worked great. When we moved in, the home was absolutely spectacular! So, when we moved to another state to retire, we decided to repeat the process. Even though I still had the IMSI software (Version 5) and it readily installed onto XP, I thought that surely there had been improvements. So, I took the time to find the "best package out there". The reviews I read said that the Punch (Architect 4000) package was rated best, had the most features, blah, blah, blah. So I bought it, in spite of paying approximately 3X what I would pay for the latest IMSI version of FloorPlan 3D. The manual is about an inch thick, but I started wading through, thinking that this was the learning cost of a really good package. The manual seemed reasonable and there are TONS of features (read complexity), but when I actually tried to use the program, I couldn't get anything done. Everything was hard to do. Then, and this was the killer for me, whenever I saved data, I could never read the file back in. I tried everything, and eventually thought that it was my fault, so I went back to my old IMSI package because I had a house to design.
I quickly got up to speed because IMSI wins out hands down for its simple user interface. I struggled with both initially, but soon found that IMSI's wall layout tool, while weird, was useable. It's ease of use (tailorable wall heights, pushing even non-rectilinear wall segments around, changing wall thicknesses, immediate demonstration of dimensions and room square footage, changing wall and floor materials, colors, and texture, etc) allowed one to work pretty quickly. I was never able to use Punch's layout editor efficiently. Ever! Forget saving the data so you could work on a design again. Even just creating a simple layout was a huge struggle. Unless you knew the design beforehand, it was very difficult to lay out a floor plan interactively. This was what IMSI was good at. Even with a fully designed floorplan, I had trouble with the Punch program.
IMSI was also the easiest in viewing your design in 3D. Again, the viewing tools were weird and somewhat non-intuitive, but eventually useful. Punch's 3D viewer was totally useless, and I was never able to control the views, no matter what I did. And, "Hey!", I taught computer graphics.
After spending many hours getting a complete design (from my working with IMSI) entered into a freshly-reloaded Punch, I again tried to save my work. When I went back to work on it some more, it was unreadable. The file was there, but there was some formatting error that made it unreadable. I was furious, but thankfully, I had the IMSI design captured. So, I had a decision- Waste more time trying to debug a program I had paid 3X more for than the IMSI FloorPlan 3D, or spend my time getting work done on my house plan. Actually, I downloaded a free upgrade to Version 5.1 and got busy. Now I am thinking of purchasing IMSI's Version 11 as I am finalizing our house plan and like some of the new features and abilities of the new software.
To be candid, neither software package was bug-free. IMSI occasionally doesn't allow you to move a wall, but that is almost always because there is some constraint that is disallowing the modification. I found Punch to be even more restrictive. While I was able to export the IMSI design as a vrml file and e-MAIL it to my son to review, Punch had the greatest number of export file options. Too bad it always lost my saved designs. Neither package really creates beautiful 3D graphics, but IMSI's simple renderings were adequate for previewing the design work. I also liked IMSI's design methods using internal room dimensions. But, neither program made it clear how to proceed in starting a design from scratch. Nowhere did they tell you whether you could design the 2nd floor first, whether you had to layout the foundation beforehand (Punch), etc.
Finally, I should mention that I wanted to input site information for my lot, but that was too costly in terms of time. Interestingly, I downloaded Google's free Sketchup software, imported my IMSI design (in dxf file format), and was able to place it on the terrain using a Sketchup to Google Earth tool, and then interactively view it in 3D on my 10 acre lot using Google Earth. I found out that I have some serious grading and fill work to do on the build site.

DesignCAD 3D MAX 14 Review

DesignCAD 3D MAX 14
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am longtime user of DesignCAD. Started with DesignCAD 95. I've also compared numerous CAD programs against it in my quest for POWER and USEABILITY.
While other programs offer more for a price . . . this software has been my consistent favorite. EASY to learn, and capable beyond what most users will need for 2D drafting and 3D modeling.
Customizable menus and toolboxes, as well as macro and Basiccad scripting give uses of all levels control over the design process. Keyboard shortcuts quickly become second-nature and speed up the process considerably.
From custom equipment trailers, conveyors and farm equipment, to home remodeling and aircraft parts, this program has been a pleasure. Even complex curved surfaces and transparent solids are within reach of the average user.
The new owner: IMSI, is less responsive than the former: Upperspace Inc, but the user forum at is a treasure trove of answers and help from advanced DesignCAD users. It's one of the best CAD forums on the web.

HGTV Home & Landscape Platinum Suite Review

HGTV Home and Landscape Platinum Suite
Average Reviews:

I purchased this product last March. There were some conflicting reviews, but I'm pretty computer savvy and have been using a coumputer since I was 5 (that's 27 years) and worked my way through college doing IT work. Thought I could figure it out. The software is gibberish. You may not need to know much about computers to use the design wizard, but you do need to know about technical details and construction terms. Despite trying to follow along with the manual I could never get it. It said it came with "thousands of sample home plans." It doesn't. You get 6. 6 Ugly ones. None of them are the pretty house on the cover which made me choose this software over the Better Homes version. You can go to the HGTV web site and VIEW thousands of plans but you can't download them into the program or at all. You can purchase hard copies of them for hundreds of dollars, but you didn't need to buy the software to do that.
Another reason I chose the HGTV version over BH&G is that it came with a 90 day money back promise. Before my 90 days was up I contacted the makers, NOVA Development to start the money back process. They emailed me back telling me to fill out a form, but didn't send it. I finally got the form and it was a destruction agreement. As per the directions I filled out the form, deleted the program, destroyed the CD's, signed that I destroyed everything, gave the box to my dog to play with and emailed the form back to them. A week later I get an email telling me i filled out the wrong form and they sent me a new one that said to return the CDs, packaging, and manual - "all incomplete returns will be destroyed and not processed" or something to that effect. My trash was empty. No more CD's. All I had left was the box which my dog wasn't so intrested in destroying, which I mailed to them with a letter explaining what had happened and copies of all the correspondence. It's now been over 4 months and I haven't seen my money back.

Punch Home Design Architectural Series 18 Review

Punch Home Design Architectural Series 18
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have used three Punch products in the past 3 years: Suite, Platinum, and AS18. They all offer similar user interfaces, although as you pay more money, you get more features. In fact, the feature list in AS18 is too large to list here. While some of the newer features work (DXF and VRML export), I was unable to figure out why anyone would want to use them. The diversity of the features (for example, "showers" can be found both in the "objects" [or "furniture"] section, and in the "plumbing" section) will strike you either as confusing, or as providing rich alternatives, depending on how you view these things.
Punch offers free updates from their web site, but if history is any indicator, you can only expect one update per product. Older products, such as Suite and Platinum, are likely to remain exactly as they are, with no further enhancements or bug fixes. I believe that an AS18 upgrade is now available for download from Punch.
Program performance ranges from intolerably slow to quite acceptable, but not in a way that is easy to fathom. Calculations that took my old Dell 933 MHz Pentium system 20 seconds, take about 11 seconds on my new AMD 1.8 MHz Athalon, but for a different kind of calculation, the numbers are 4 and 40. Yes, that's right: the newer, faster machine is 10 times slower than the older machine. When I switched video boards on the newer machine (from an ATI 8500 Radeon to an nVidia 4200 card), this number dropped to below a second, an improvement of a factor of 50 or so. Thus, predicting program performance can be difficult, since simply getting new hardware is not a panacea. Punch tech support provided essentially no help in this area. Note that 3D values are recomputed at times when they need not be, which can be especially frustrating if you have a slower system, since long (20 second) delays can occur.
Punch has designed the software so that there are times when the blueprint is repositioned without your permission. This can lead to your having to pan back to the place you were working originally, which can be pretty annoying. Why they think that they should move the diagram when you did not ask them to is beyond me.
Some features only work well when using a mouse: if you use a graphics tablet, you may be further annoyed. The zoom feature is particulary awkward to use with a tablet.
The main difference between the older Suite and Platinum products and the AS18 product is the addition of "layers". You can inspect and work on any of the layers (including the floor plan, electrical, plumbing, roof, etc) separately, while seeing the other layers as needed. This is a great improvement over the older software.
The program is feature laden, and you can actually design a house with it, but I found it to be pretty annoying at times. On the other hand, I know of no other software in this price range that offers anywhere near the features that this package does.
Annoyances not already mentioned included the following:
The hourglass cursor is rarely used when program delays occur, resulting in user confusion and erroneous multiple clicks;
Some functions appear as active menu items but in fact cannot be used at all;
Even when you click on an object, and the context menu appears, the object may not be fully selected, and operations on that object may fail without warning or explanation;
Plumbing showerheads cannot be moved to arbitrary shower walls;
36"x36" showers will not fit on a 38" wall;
Invoking some tools results in no visible change to the screen, because the tool has performed an activity at a location that the user is not currently able to see;
The program always asks you whether you want to save your design, even when you have made no changes, and even when the design is empty;
The program does not remember printing preferences at all;
Some standard objects (such as queen sized beds) are not the
correct size;
Some objects cannot be easily manipulated because they are hidden "behind" other objects, and there are no facilities for moving objects to the front or back;
Data from designs made in older versions of Punch! software can be read in newer versions, but some data can be lost without warning.

Complete LandDesigner 3D Design Collection 7.0 Review

Complete LandDesigner 3D Design Collection 7.0
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First, I'd like to say that I think this software is a great value for the price. There are however, some requirements you should be aware of before you buy. These programs require TIME and PATIENCE. If you are doing a complete landscape, expect to invest many hours. I'm not talking months or anything, but until you get the hang of it, progress will be slow. If you are using the 3D program, you will have to take LOTS of measurements if you want realistic results. BUT, once you get a nice replica of your home and garden, it's fun to experiment with adding/removing features. More important than the time investment, be aware that due to the details in graphics, these programs may not be compatible with your computer. Please be sure your computer meets the "recommended" (different from 'minimum') system requirements. I will also include some info from the program's "README" page. ..."Matrox Millenium G400, ATI Rage chipsets & Voodoo3 3000 are known to have problems with 3d acceleration". And..."STB Velocity 128 video card does not work properly...at all" Please note that some of these problems may have been fixed with recent drivers. Also, the video acceleration feature can be disabled and this is a likely remedy for video problems. At any rate, I wanted to mention this just in case. If you have the requirements, I highly recommend you try this software. Some of my favorite features are the price trackers. These are great if you are on a budget. I am landscaping my backyard and found that some materials which are nearly equal in quality had significant price differences. I'm sure this will vary upon location, but it still gives a good ballpark figure. Also, you are not limited to outdoors. This program also enables you to redecorate indoors as well. I have completed my backyard and have started my guest bedroom! I think this is generally easy to use software that will give you lots of good ideas. Just follow the manuals and tutorials and you shouldn't have any problems. I am sure there will be negative reviews from people who will think the programs are too time consuming or not detailed enough. Please keep in mind, these are not CAD programs. They certainly could be used by professionals for basic landscape outlines. (the cost minus rebate) you will get your money's worth. And another bonus, if you try it and hate it, you can send it to the company and get your money back.

Broderbund 3D Home Architect Home Design Deluxe 6 Review

Broderbund 3D Home Architect Home Design Deluxe 6

The software is easy to use, easy to learn. Newer versions have gotten progressively better at providing "canned" components (i.e. footers, windows, doors, textures). This version is even more customizable than previous versions.
The tabbed interface, and selectable toolbars make the interface a lot more functional. I definitely like version 6 better than 3, 4, and 5.
HOWEVER, I would offer a SIGNIFICANT word of caution. Broderbund has a habit of leaving its established client base in the dust. I have been using the application for years, and therefore have a large library of floor plans developed (for my own home, future ideas, etc). In previous upgrades, Broderbund has changed file formats, thus making it impossible to bring previous work into newer products.
I have written to them pleading for consistency, or at least import/export functionality. They have provided no satisfaction. My most recent email to tech support on version 6 yielded this response:
"I understand that you are inquiring about importing a CAD file format into
3D Home Design 6.
This program has the ability to export as DXF, 3DS and WRL files, however
is not capable of importing or opening DXF or other file formats.
Sorry about the inconvenience."
"...inconvenience..." Do they have any clue how much work it is to re-create multiple (dimensionally accurate) designs over AND over again?
While it is nice that you can export to DXF format (great for transferring plans to construction engineers, architects, etc...), it is THE PITS that you CANNOT import from a standard file format (like DXF).
If you are serious about your design and remodeling work, and plan to use this for more than just a room makeover, you may want to consider how important it is to you to take advantage of upgrade features while having to rebuild your designs in the future.
BEFORE you have an established plan base, you may want to consider other products that can import standard formats (i.e. Better Homes and Gardens Home Designer Pro).

I have come so very close to getting this program to work for me, and have even gotten exploratory value out of it, but you should know that the database is often corrupted by the tool, and requires program re-installation and design recreation.
In the words of the help file (on line at ...):
MBuilder Has Encountered a Problem...
When using the program, the following message appears:
"MBuilder has encountered problem." There are several possible causes for
this issue. The remainder of this note describes how to proceed.
Determine If the Plan Is Corrupt
1. Launch 3D Home Architect® and create a new plan.
2. Add a basic structure to the plan.
3. Save the plan and close 3D Home Architect®.
4. Launch 3D Home Architect® and open the plan created in Steps 1 & 2 above.
5. Choose from the following:
* If the error message does not reoccur when working with the new plan,
the previous plan is most likely corrupt. Recreate the plan or restore
a backup copy of the plan.
* If the same error reoccurs, continue with the following procedures.
These suggestions will help to prevent corruption in future plans
-- Further instructions tell you to turn off large displays, accelerations, etc.
As long as you have separate backups every 15 minutes or so (not just saving the file, but saving to a set of many different files) then you may be able to recover some of your work.
The problem is, you may work for a long time with the program working, but with save files written by the program that are corrupt. Once written out, it can't be read back in.
I have worked with their on-line help system, and have been referred to the instructions: just reinstall and recreate what you did.
My question to them was, "How do I know what to avoid?"
Part of the problem is that the design may be OK in memory, but when it gets written out, it is corrupt. There is a "repair database" command that sometimes works, but only if the file is still in memory, and not always then.
Identifying what caused the problem has eluded me so far (50+ hours of use, design not finished)
A hint for you if you do use the program: you should know that small pieces of walls can be left behind as remnants. When walls start to act funny, expand the area, pull all of the walls back out of the intersections, and delete the little pieces that are left. You can then rejoin the wall segments and continue. (you will need to redo roofs ceilings and floors, but you will be used to that by then.
Try it, many parts work extremely well, but make all your decisions up front, because changing is tedious.
Just a few things would enhance the utility of the program tremendously: a copy/paste that works between files, a robust database, and a format painter that can work on trim.
Good luck.

Professional Home Design Suite Platinum Review

Punch Pro. Home Design Suite Platinum V12, is not hard to use, especially if you have used any type of Autocad, or Home design software in the past.
I laid out my entire basement and second floor addition in about half an hour.... This program is addicting because you want to measure every space you have to make it accurate.
It prints blueprints, and has electrical and plumbing blueprints as well. AWSOME. It has 3D walk and fly over modes that are right on the money.
I took a chance on buying this cause there were many negative reviews on this software. All I can say, if you are willing to spend the time and you feel strongly about your project or addition, this will be well worth it.
This is an advanced piece of software, so if you have any graphics experience or you are technical, this is the one to get.

Punch Home Design Architectural Series 4000 v10 Review

Punch Home Design Architectural Series 4000 v10
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After using this software for a week, I'm generally pleased with the results. The learning curve is not too difficult to climb; though I have some prior experience with less sophisticated versions of this type of software.
The box comes with a thick printed manual, which is nice to have for reference. The index in the manual is good but not great. Unfortunately the manual is not comprehensive. It appears to cover the core functionality but does not have any depth to its discussion of "power tools". The manual appears to be a nearly verbatim copy of the online help.
The software comes with short online instructional videos -- basically animated screen captures with voice-over commentary. The two or three videos that I've watched have filled in the gaps that the manual left open.
My pc has a 2001-era 1Ghz Celeron and 1GB of memory. It renders the 3D drawings fast enough to not be frustrating, and I have limited patience for this sort of thing. However, I have not added great amounts of detail to the plan yet -- mostly just walls, roof, electrical, and some trim. The addition of detail may slow rendering down enough to be annoying. Other reviewers have complained about performance, but the documentation has hints for speeding up if you run into problems.
While the core parts of the software are pretty good, the power tools leave a little something to be desired. This may just be a lack of education on my part, but if so then I'm going to blame the skimpy documentation. These power tools almost appear to have been developed by either different groups or by third parties. Overall they lack the polish and usability that is part of the core software. Take the "room wizard", for example. This is a slick way to put together the interior floor plan of the house. The problem is that the room wizard launches almost as a separate application, and when you're done it asks to "update the current design". When you say yes, it appears to paste the picture drawn in the room wizard back into the main application. From there, it is difficult (impossible?) to get the interior layout to overlay your foundation design.
I had difficulty with other power tools: the topo designer is clunky, the site planner has an annoying lot size limitation (no line can be more than 1000'), the estimator won't let you add additional materials (you can put in the cost of concrete for your foundation, but you can't add fill or stone for drainage; if I have to manually put this stuff into a separate spreadsheet then having a built-in estimator is pointless). And so on. Again, maybe this is a learning thing, but the rest of the software is easy to figure out -- why are these so different?
Overall, I would give the software 3.5 stars: four stars for doing the stuff it absolutely must do very well, minus one star for advertising extras that don't work so good, plus a star for good documentation on the core functionality, minus half a star for failing to document the extras. (I figure that the extra thirty to fifty bucks of cost over competing brands is due to these extras, but I haven't tried the competition.)

3D Home Architect Home & Landscape Deluxe Suite Version 9 Review

3D Home Architect Home and Landscape Deluxe Suite Version 9
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I liked Home Architect Version 8, but then I tried Version 9 because I thought it would be better. After 10 minutes of this program, I wanted to toss it out the door. See, this program isn't owned by the original company anymore, they're owned by Punch! Software.
- Any means to customize objects such as Counters or Appliances have been removed. You can Scale them, but you cannot increase or decrease the width.
- If you have knowledge with 3DS Max, you could create a 3D Object, but otherwise you need to use the Objects that Punch! provides. Sacrifices will be made because many vital 3D Objects won't be available.
Want to rotate your Object? No problem! Each time you want to do it, just click on Edit, click on Rotate, type in the Number of Degrees to Rotate, click on the "Degrees" button, then click Okay. In the previous version, each Object would have a Square and a Triangle. You'd just click on the Triangle on the Object, then Rotate. That's been removed.
The Generate Project has been removed. Want to know what you have used? What the project will cost? Too bad.
They removed the Design Wizard completely. The reason I liked 3D Home Architect was because it was different than AutoCAD or DeltaCAD. Those who weren't too knowledgable with those two programs could try 3D Home Architect because the Easy-to-Use Software was more driven towards people who just wanted to make up a quick Floor Plan.
It took me over an Hour just to build the Kitchen. The counters just would not align themselves properly. Objects seemed incomplete, or improperly designed.
Remember the Grid Lock, Object Lock, or Alignment Lock? They've been removed.
Getting a specific Camera View on your House no longer exists. You're just given a 3D Model of your home that you can walk around with the Mouse. You could do that in the previous version too, but they stripped out all the other Features in 3D Mode.
Sure, you can purchase this product, you could download it at their website but there's no Trial Software, No Refunds, No Exchanges... It says there's Refunds or Exchanges on the website, but they don't tell you which ones. EVEN with the Proof of Purchase, tough luck.
If the developers happen to read this, 3D Home Architect WAS a GREAT program. This is just incomplete. It's like you've released it way too early.
I have an idea... Go back to Schhol for Programming & Design because Version 9 is just a headache. It's incomplete, and much more inaccessible, difficult, and frustrating than Version 8. A Trial Version really needs to be offered, otherwise you're just conning people out of $40.00+ per product sold.
To everyone else, I've said my piece. You're welcome to purchase it, but I guarantee that once you've seen just how bad this program is, you'll want your money back.
