Corel Upgrade Painter 11 Review

(More customer reviews)Corel Painter is in a category all its own. While photo manipulation software comes in all sorts and layout programs abound for every skill set, Painter is a unique program that allows real art to be made directly in a digital format.
This could easily be quite a cheesy goal and a sub-par result meant more for play than serious work. Could be, but Painter does the task so well it is really astounding.
I could have said the exact same words, and have, about Painter IX, a program I have owned since it was released.
I've found that program unsurpassed in all kinds of creative goals for both web and print use, for both serious work and for creative exploration.
I was familiar with Painter IX, and yet I'm still a bit blown away by Painter 11.
It's an easy transition. Everything looks the same and so there's no major transition from the older to the newer. The main difference is in feel. Painter 11 just feels more natural. It has better response, better control, better overall simulation of the various media. Even on the Intuos3, I could always feel a strong bit of distance, and artificiality, on Painter IX. In Painter 11 I just feel so much more connected to the canvas on the screen.
Some have noted some issues with their graphics pad. I've not seen any problems at all. Perfect and easy use, even better than Painter IX in every respect.
Often, new programs try to add so much they become slower, or more complicated, or otherwise a step down in performance for the steps up in function. Painter 11 adds a whole list of new brushes and capabilities, all functioning perfect as I try them out. It does this while speeding up all the various interactions. Everything just seem so smooth. So not only are the brushes and pens feeling so much more natural, the whole experience is sharpened and quick.
The integration with the Adobe products is likewise quite good. One thing I've appreciated about the various Corel products is their ability to 'play well with others'. Instead of trying to mark out its territory by ignoring the major players, Corel enables functions that takes seriously the probable software use of real designers and artists.
Painter has always been a program in its own class, and that sometimes means a company doesn't continue to innovate with it. Corel keeps pushing the edge, making a five star product much better, by making better what it already did great and adding quite useful capabilities on top of this.
Extremely pleased with Painter 11. Well worth the cost, and if you have an older version it is indeed worth an upgrade.
Some reviewers have noted this version seems slower. I just can't see what they mean. Indeed, not only does this program feel quite a bit faster it also seems to work well on a variety of systems. My main computer is a XPS710 with a quad core processor, a nice video card. Of course Painter flies on that one. But, surprisingly, it also works quite smoothly on my laptop, a Dell e1405, that has no separate video processor, is one of earliest dual-core, and only has 1gb of memory. If I do particularly processor intensive tasks it does lag a bit, but significantly less than my Adobe programs. It works better than Painter IX did on the same computer.
As far as operating systems, I've run this on Vista premium (my main computer), XP media edition (my laptop), and Vista home (my wife's laptop). Runs great on each.
I heartily do recommend downloading the 30 day free trial Corel offers to see how the program works on your computer and if you see the worth of an upgrade as I did.

(More customer reviews)You'll need to invest some time to complete the series of "Two-Minute Tutorials"; however, they really do take about 2 minutes each to complete and they provide an excellent foundation to begin using the software effectively. As an entry-level 2D drawing tool, I can't imagine ever using all of the bells and whistles. Fortunately it's fairly straightforward to find/use the functions you're interested in after only using the program for a short time. Online help is always a few clicks away but would still like to see a hardcopy User's Guide included in the box (you can download/print the User's Guide but it's 400 pages...). Overall a very good product.

As such, I always find I am rusty with the command line commands in AutoCad after being away from it for weeks to months. I have developed a dislike of AutoCad as a result. After having for years struggled to reclimb the learning curve with both the DOS and Windows versions of AutoCad I went in search of a cad product that would be user friendly, without the need for remembering the command line commands, and use a Windows tool bar interface with click and drag.I have found the AutoDesk product QuickCad makes excellent professional quality electrical and P&ID drawings. However, when attempting to save a QuickCad file as a DWG file, several things get lost in the translation.
Specifically, text size does not translate to Autocad as it was created in QuickCad. If one can live without the need to translate QuickCad files into AutoCad files, this is a very good cad package at a great price.

Punch Home Design Studio Pro (Mac) Review

(More customer reviews)I am sorely disappointed. Let me first say that I am a graphics professional, with image, video, and 3D modeling and animation background. So I did not expect incredible quality or even an easy to use program. But this thing is ridiculous.
First off YOU CANNOT IMPORT YOUR OWN TEXTURES. We are doing our kitchen and I was hoping to visualize materials, but even with a pretty extensive library of materials (I found the granite we wanted to use for counters), I could not import our tile options for the backsplash, and other things. Don't get me wrong you can import image files...as image planes, but not as textures!
Object library is stupid. 3 types of cabinets, categorized under lt cabinets and dk cabinets. Funny though not all cabinet shapes and sizes are there in all 3 colors. For example there may be a dark raised panel base cabinet, but not a light colored one. So then I use the custom workshop pro, where you can place any material on any object, and I think cool I can just texture each size and shape I need as needed. Yeah if you want to manually drag the texture to each shape (about 30) that make up each cabinet. Then I try the cabinet assistant, this should work for me right...wrong. The assistant has 4 steps, 1 pick cabinet type, 2 pick the direction the cabinet should face, 3 pick sizes and door style (shaker or raised panel) and your done! What about wood type and color? What about the other 10-20 styles of cabinet doors? Sure I can manually "paint" each cabinet but it seems to me that you should be able to layout the basic cabinets in your layout, and then globally choose a style/color for the entire kitchen.
moving in 3d "live view" is difficult at best.
you cannot move objects in a 3d view, only over head
measuring is by default done by measuring to the center of walls, not how I would measure my real space (wall to wall)
lighting and shadowing in rendered scenes is not even close to accurate (based on how objects are drawn from what I can tell)
I haven't even began to try and use any of the other "features" but I'm sure most of the program is as obtuse as the features I did try.
perhaps the pc version is better but overall this product sucks

(More customer reviews)Turbocad has been around since 1985, consequently with this many years of development it is full featured and does 95% what Autocad does, 3D modeling is proably more advanced than Autocad.Uses the same ACIS engine that Autocad has. Version 12 Pro runs very well on Vista! The learning curve is the same as other large CAD programs. You will need the training books from IMSI and cd's as well as the training bundle from Cadcourse.com. The online CAD magazine Cadalyst gives it their highest review rating. Imports and exports just about every file format you can think of. Has a large color palette, and every imaginable drawing tool! Great for Engineering, Computerized Numerical Control and Architectual pro quality work. Also can do technical illustration. While the Pro version is full featured, the Deluxe version is pretty good except it only does basic 3d, not advanced 3d like the pro version does. Is a serious engineering cad/arch tool. Plug-ins available. Does scripts. Upgradable. Great CAD program!!

Punch Home & Landscape Design Suite with NexGen Technology Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased this after using the Better Homes & Gardens Home Designer Suite. At first, it looked like it had potential as it appeared to be much more flexible and feature laden. Unfortunately, it has too many problems. Simple things like selecting walls and moving them, copy and paste, and 3d walk-through are either poorly implemented or bug-laden. I was hoping to find a support release that would improve on what appears to be a first run, buggy release - but there is none.
I searched their forums and they don't even have a dedicated forum for this product. I contacted support and inquired about maintenance releases and dedicated product forums (like they have for their other products) and was told they have none and suggested I contact tech support. I don't need to beta test software and spend time with tech support for basic functions that should be implemented properly - so I'm sending it all back for the money-back guarantee.
Also, the green features appear to be "thrown in". When clicking the special green icon, you just get a few tips that are mostly common sense. When you try to delve deeper, it's just a link to a page Punch! made that has categories of external links to external sites on the internet that could be found using a search engine.
As an aside, I've found TurboFloorplan from IMSI to be the best of the 3 programs I've tried - though I'm stilling learning it.

IMSI FloorPlan 3D Home Design Suite Version 10 Review

(More customer reviews)I own both the IMSI (FloorPlan 3D Version 5) and Punch (Architect 4000) software titles, and the following are my own conclusions. I have no vested interest in either manufacturer. I have a doctorate in Mechanical Engineering, and have taught interactive computer graphics, so I guess I am more than usually familiar with computers and design.
I designed my previous home using the IMSI package, and after using it to capture the design, I passed it along to a draftsman to create drawings for the permitting process. I found that the package was easy to use (although a bit weird), and that it generally worked great. When we moved in, the home was absolutely spectacular! So, when we moved to another state to retire, we decided to repeat the process. Even though I still had the IMSI software (Version 5) and it readily installed onto XP, I thought that surely there had been improvements. So, I took the time to find the "best package out there". The reviews I read said that the Punch (Architect 4000) package was rated best, had the most features, blah, blah, blah. So I bought it, in spite of paying approximately 3X what I would pay for the latest IMSI version of FloorPlan 3D. The manual is about an inch thick, but I started wading through, thinking that this was the learning cost of a really good package. The manual seemed reasonable and there are TONS of features (read complexity), but when I actually tried to use the program, I couldn't get anything done. Everything was hard to do. Then, and this was the killer for me, whenever I saved data, I could never read the file back in. I tried everything, and eventually thought that it was my fault, so I went back to my old IMSI package because I had a house to design.
I quickly got up to speed because IMSI wins out hands down for its simple user interface. I struggled with both initially, but soon found that IMSI's wall layout tool, while weird, was useable. It's ease of use (tailorable wall heights, pushing even non-rectilinear wall segments around, changing wall thicknesses, immediate demonstration of dimensions and room square footage, changing wall and floor materials, colors, and texture, etc) allowed one to work pretty quickly. I was never able to use Punch's layout editor efficiently. Ever! Forget saving the data so you could work on a design again. Even just creating a simple layout was a huge struggle. Unless you knew the design beforehand, it was very difficult to lay out a floor plan interactively. This was what IMSI was good at. Even with a fully designed floorplan, I had trouble with the Punch program.
IMSI was also the easiest in viewing your design in 3D. Again, the viewing tools were weird and somewhat non-intuitive, but eventually useful. Punch's 3D viewer was totally useless, and I was never able to control the views, no matter what I did. And, "Hey!", I taught computer graphics.
After spending many hours getting a complete design (from my working with IMSI) entered into a freshly-reloaded Punch, I again tried to save my work. When I went back to work on it some more, it was unreadable. The file was there, but there was some formatting error that made it unreadable. I was furious, but thankfully, I had the IMSI design captured. So, I had a decision- Waste more time trying to debug a program I had paid 3X more for than the IMSI FloorPlan 3D, or spend my time getting work done on my house plan. Actually, I downloaded a free upgrade to Version 5.1 and got busy. Now I am thinking of purchasing IMSI's Version 11 as I am finalizing our house plan and like some of the new features and abilities of the new software.
To be candid, neither software package was bug-free. IMSI occasionally doesn't allow you to move a wall, but that is almost always because there is some constraint that is disallowing the modification. I found Punch to be even more restrictive. While I was able to export the IMSI design as a vrml file and e-MAIL it to my son to review, Punch had the greatest number of export file options. Too bad it always lost my saved designs. Neither package really creates beautiful 3D graphics, but IMSI's simple renderings were adequate for previewing the design work. I also liked IMSI's design methods using internal room dimensions. But, neither program made it clear how to proceed in starting a design from scratch. Nowhere did they tell you whether you could design the 2nd floor first, whether you had to layout the foundation beforehand (Punch), etc.
Finally, I should mention that I wanted to input site information for my lot, but that was too costly in terms of time. Interestingly, I downloaded Google's free Sketchup software, imported my IMSI design (in dxf file format), and was able to place it on the terrain using a Sketchup to Google Earth tool, and then interactively view it in 3D on my 10 acre lot using Google Earth. I found out that I have some serious grading and fill work to do on the build site.

Adobe Creative Suites Premium 1.1 Review

(More customer reviews)Everything is in here. All of the design apps are on two installer CDs. Any designer -- whether web or print -- has at least a few of the applications in this suite. You only need to decide if the price is right, and if your current upgrades would make the purchase worthwhile.
Buying this suite is the equivalent of a corporate employee owning Microsoft Office. Adobe's name now equals design software. Knowing Adobe's product line is simply required knowledge. Print houses will accept and produce your files without problems, and multiplatform file transfer can be completed with minimum processing time.
For me, I was using a dated version of Illustrator, PageMaker 6.5, Photoshop Elements. The additional programs and new versions of what I had made the purchase a no-brainer. I also primarily use Dreamweaver, but learning GoLive will help me as I meet with clients. Outside of InDesign and GoLive, every application here is the industry standard, and those two programs are strongly coming into their own.
To explain the virtues of each individual application is not necessary. You know the benefits of Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat, and GoLive. InDesign might be new to some of the veterans, but it is beyond a replacement for the inferior PageMaker, and is a force of its own.
With the quality increase of InDesign, designers are now able to choose something besides Quark for their page layout application. Including InDesign here made the purchase for me easy. I have no reason now to piecemeal together my software base.
Each application has all of the features that they have when independently purchased.
I fully recommend "Adobe Creative Suites Premium." Designers need these apps, and so your decision is only about price and value.

CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X4 Upgrade Review

(More customer reviews)I come from the sign industry and a lot of sign shops use CorelDRAW. However, it would be NICE if Corel realized that they have such a following in that niche and would optimize DRAW for vinyl cutting. Phew! I've always wanted to get that off my chest.
Having said that it was worthwhile upgrading from version 12. I'm not sure that upgrading from X3 would have been worthwhile.
CorelDRAW's interface, particularly in editing bezier curves, has always made it my choice. I used Illustrator every single day at work but I have yet to figure out curve editing on it. :-P
Corel still does not match Adobe in the colour management area. They need to take this a little more seriously!
Corel needs to stop buying up companies and trying to market their products. Why did they buy Paintshop? They should have just continued to update Photopaint. Paintshop is just a drag on their developement resources and takes their programing team away from their core products.
Also, Corel is not taking website design integration seriously. They need something to compete with Dreamweaver. "Get with it guys! It is not just a print world anymore!" Also, why the devil did they stop developement of RAVE??? It disappeared a couple incarnations ago and doesn't look like it'll return.
Having said all that CorelDRAW X4 is a great vector illustration program and I can still do professional raster image editing with Photopaint. Their bitmap to vector tracing module can't be beat. All for much less than Adobe products.

As such it is simple to use and produces accurate results. We use it in our business daily. I am pleased that they finally solved the printed line weight problem in this new version. If you're expecting a Visio or Adobe replacement, you misunderstand the product. If you are expecting a simplified version of AutoCAD, this is the product to use.

Adobe Indesign CS3 Review

(More customer reviews)At this point, I'd strongly suggest that you not buy this version and instead wait for the CS4 version of InDesign, which should be coming out in October 2008. Here's a review of the new features it offers.
INDESIGN CS4
What's great about this upgrade is that no particularly category of user is slighted. Those who deal with graphics rich documents get Smart Guides and an improved Links panel. Those who work with long, complex documents get cross-references and Smart Text Reflow. Those who do catalogs get conditional text and direct-to-PDF output. Those into multimedia get Flash output two ways. For everyone there's an improve user interface that includes tabbed windows for those have more windows open than they have display space. Finally, almost everyone seems delighted by a surprise new feature, GREP styles, which is great for taking care of all the niggling little formatting chores inside a paragraph. All these features save time and make the work go smoother.
It is true that Adobe might have done more. ID still won't let a paragraph style define a heading spanning multiple columns. One Adobe programmer told me that required hard work, text in columns has to be organized to end in a nice row before the heading. That may be true, but other products do it, including the two-decade old FrameMaker, and the alternative is clumsy fiddling with frames that get out of kilter in the text or formatting is changed. As it stands now, Smart Text Reflow and Conditional Text can't be used with multi-column plus heading text.
And in the timesaving department, linking frames is still the Nuisance of Nuisances. ID needs Named Frames, which would allow users to attach a name to all frames in the same sequence, something particularly useful for magazines and newspapers Add another feature called Smart Frames, which would automatically link all frames in a specific order--top to bottom, right to left, lower to higher page--and linking frames would become easy. Those who want something unusual could still do things the old way.
In short this is a solid and useful upgrade for almost anyone who uses ID more than occasionally. It'll save you time and let you produce more complex, better looking documents with less effort. If you use ID more than a few hours a week, this is a must-have upgrade.

Floor Plan 3D V11 Remodel & Home Design Review

(More customer reviews)I can't understand why this product is still being pawned off on the public. This is hands down the worst Home design program ever developed. I have tried to use this software since FloorPlan 3. It was trash then and still is. It has an incredible amount of professional features. It's just too bad you can't use them efficiently with all the gliches and slow rendering even on my state of the art Core2 duo, Radeon x1950xt machine. Save your time and money on this garbage. IMSI's tech support will not help in the slightest. It is full of bugs and the slowest rendering program I have ever seen. Their are several other quality home design architectual programs that actually work. A full feature program like Punch Home Design, Better Homes and Gardens Home Designer is great, or even the less expensive Broderbund 3d Home Architect all are a lot better products. You could even use the kids 'Sims' pc game or 'Second Life' online and get a lot better quality and speed remodling and designing homes.

None of our CDR files will show previews. There are 1000's of cliparts that we cannot tell what they are because the program will NOT show thumbs, just a little green pencil icon which is the corel x5 logo. Nobody in corel forums knows how to solve this problem, and there are many others who have this problem with their corel X5 too. corel Inc. will not do anything to help. too bad, the program seems to have many good features if you could just see your file thumbs.
