Don't worry about compatibilty with MS Word. WordPerfect imports and exports Word files just fine. If your primary concern is wordprocessing, get WordPerfect

This upgrade is worth its price.
Used in conjunction with Project Server and Project Professional 2003 the program now allows project tasks to appear in Outlook calendars and messaging. As a project manager, I find this feature eases communications with team members and fosters greater team participation.
This ease of communication saves time and money. If you have doubts over this upgrade, my unequivocal recommendation is to proceed. The software's tight integration with other Microsoft Office Products, including Outlook, enables you to focus on project goals, not the technology that supports them.

Microsoft Office for Mac 2008 Business Edition Upgrade Review

Microsoft Office for Mac 2008 Business Edition Upgrade
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I installed Office 2008 on my 1.25GHz G4 iMac, running System 10.5.8 . Since many reviewers have thoroughly discussed the features of each Office application already, I am focusing this review on my experience of upgrading from Office v.X to Office 2008 on a PowerPC iMac. Background:
*I have experience with several versions of Mac Office, beginning with version 4.2 . I also have used Office 98, Office 2001, and as mentioned above, Office v.X before upgrading to Office 2008.
*The way I use Office has changed over time. I made extensive use of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint in graduate school and in various professional settings through Office 2001. Now I mostly use Excel to do basic financial analysis and Word to write personal documents.Installation:
*Installation is straightforward, using Apple's familiar Installer mechanism. I prefer this method to the old drag-and-drop installation method because OS X is so sensitive to where things are installed.
*The installer program automatically finds older versions of Office and allows users to delete them easily.
*Many customized settings can be transferred from previous Office installations, including dictionaries, autocorrect lists, and proofing tool settings.
*Once Office 2008 is installed, several updates must be downloaded and installed. Microsoft should have made this process more user-friendly. Users must manually shut down other applications, including the Office 2008 Installer, before running the update installer.Pros:
*Office is now a Universal Binary so the same program will run on both PowerPC and Intel Macs.
*An Uninstaller is placed in the Office folder automatically.
*Office will check for updates automatically on a schedule chosen by the user. No more messing around on the Microsoft website, hoping you didn't miss a Service Pack or Critical Update.
*Users can now turn the feedback sounds on and off. If hearing a chime, a popping bubble, or some other "cute" noise every time you did something drove you crazy, you will greatly appreciate this long overdue feature.
*Speaking of unnecessary cuteness, Clippy the Paperclip is gone! Yesssssss!Cons:
*All the applications startup and quit slowly on a G4 machine. Office v.X applications started and quit virtually instantaneously (yes, I realize v.X was written specifically for PowerPC processors). Saving files is slow as well.
*Office 2008 uses a new file format that is not compatible with other versions of Office. If you send documents to people who are not fully up to date, you have to save a second version or limit yourself to working with the older file format.
*It's good that Microsoft no longer just ports Windows Office to the Mac. Nonetheless, there are user interface inconsistencies both within and across the applications which keep Office from feeling 100% Macintosh.
*Silverlight, Microsoft's attempt to compete with Macromedia Flash, is installed by default.
*WARNING FOR POWER USERS: No macros in Excel! Bad, bad, bad move. And no support for Visual Basic.Bottom line: Office 2008 doesn't hold any surprises for experienced Office users. For the most part, everything still operates in the way to which you are accustomed. If you own a PowerPC Mac and use an older version of Office, you should carefully consider whether you want to upgrade or not. The benefits of the new features may be outweighed by the inconvenience of the slower performance and/or the need to adjust your workflow.
3.5 stars, rounded down to 3 due to the removal of macros and Visual Basic from Excel.

Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Review

Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac
Average Reviews:

I've been a heavy Office 2004 Excel user for the past two+ years. I was severely disappointed when I installed Office 2008. Microsoft elected to omit functionality that is core to being productive in Excel - solver support, data analysis, Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), and more. If you rely on Excel to do any type of business analysis or are a student that will require access to data analysis tools (regression, histograms, distributions, etc.), you will be SOL with 2008. I highly recommend that you avoid Office 2008.
Office 2008 is so incomplete and unsuited for professional work that it prompted me to write this review, which is my first.

Microsoft FrontPage 2003 Review

Microsoft FrontPage 2003
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have worked with FrontPage since version 97, which was, overall, a real stinker. I have also worked with Dreamweaver since its earliest versions. In times past, FrontPage has largely been the site management and application development leader of the two, while Dreamweaver was much better at templating and all of the eye candy, like mouseover images, that we have become so fond of using in our sites.
Having said that, FrontPage 2003 is a great step in the right direction. Here are my feelings, broken down:
Site Management
Site Management has improved in FrontPage 2003, although the most bang for the buck will be Enterprise users who have decided to use SharePoint Portal Server in their organization. Much of the new data functionality relies on SharePoint. What this means is FrontPage 2003 gives a lot more power for those in the Microsoft world. Note that it is still backwards compatible with frontPage 2002 extensions, for those without SharePoint.
Behaviors
Much of the work in this area is like Dreamweaver and it is a mixed bag. On the positive side, behaviors are more flexible in FrontPage; on the negative, there are still many missing from FrontPage. The major behaviors are there, however, so I would give FrontPage a plus here.
Intellisense and coding
Microsoft has always lead the charge in this area and FrontPage is no exception. The Intellisense in FrontPage 2003 extends into ASP and ASP.NET code. For developers interested in altering the code created, everything is accessible. The death of FrontPage extensions are the reason, so those with backward compatible sites will have to deprecate some features if they use webbots. The small price is well worth the gain.
CSS
FrontPage has much greater support for CSS than previous versions, and is especially useful for those who like to work with graphical tools or those who like to work with code. The tag explorer, in Dreamweaver, wins for those who sit in the middle, however.
HTML Editing
The ability to go back and forth from code to design and retain positioning is a real godsend. This feature exists in Dreamweaver, as well, so it is not as stellar as some of the other tools. One of the nicest tools is the tag explorer, that allows you to see the nesting of your currently selected tag and easily navigate up and down the tree. In addition, there is a code editor that lets you isolate on a specific tag and use Intellisense to code its attributes. There is also a tool that allows you to quickly find a closing tag, which is a godsend for any developer working with nested HTML tables.
Themes and templates
Themes are much more easily edited in FrontPage 2003, which allows designers to alter templated sites to make nice looking custom built sites very quickly. FrontPage also has the ability to create "master page" style templates which are, possibly a surprise, fully compatible with Dreamweaver MX.
That pretty much covers the major features. Overall, I like the FrontPage methodology of using a side pane that focuses on the task at hand over Dreamweavers sliding tool palette, although I know people that are more fond of the Dreamweaver IDE.
One of the biggest benefits I have seen of FrontPage 2003, in the FrontPage/Dreamweaver battle, is Dreamweaver's tendency to lock up the OS when working on files on a shoddy network connection. As this does not apply to as many users, it is not reason enough to shy away from Dreamweaver. As I use both, I do not want to shy away from either, but here is how I would stack it up.
FrontPage wins with its table designer, Intellisense, coding aids (esp. ASP.NET) and flexibility in behaviors. Dreamweaver still wins with the number of eye candy features, strength of its added CSS tools and its flexibility in coding models (nice for developers who work in more than one language - Java, ColdFusion, ASP and ASP.NET included).

Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac Student and Teacher Review

Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac Student and Teacher
Average Reviews:

Let's face it, no matter how much you love your Mac there are times when you might find yourself wishing it was a PC so you could send a Word file to your PC using friend (who doesn't understand the joys of PDF). Well Microsoft, never being one to miss an opportunity, has delivered the full Office Suite for Mac and designed it to take complete advantage of OS X. What that translates into is simply the best Office Suite experience anyone can have.
All the apps (Word; Excel; PowerPoint; Entourage) are included unencumbered and many have features and enhancements that can ONLY be found on the Mac. Excel features customized keyboard shortcuts and the ability to create transparent charts. Word now features easy one button access to all your contacts in Entourage as well as the handy Data Merge Manager. PowerPoint now allows movies and features full compatibility with QuickTime. The layout and feel of Entourage is much improved over it's PC counterpoint Outlook.
At first Microsoft had said that this Student & Teacher version was non-upgradeable(The only difference between this and the more pricey Standard Edition), but they have since changed their minds to allow upgrades as long as you buy before the new version is released. You even get a three computer license! Finally, here's the proof that Microsoft can be generous when it wants to.
I've had this suite for many months now and have never loved using these apps more. Sending and receiving Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents is a breeze and I've never once had an issue opening a document sent from a PC user. Beyond the functionality, I love the way all these Microsoft apps look like part of OS X in full Aqua glory. If you need to communicate with PC users or simply want the best of both worlds, you can't do any better than running Microsoft Office v.X Student & Teacher edition on a Mac.

Microsoft Outlook 2003 Review

Microsoft Outlook 2003
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I read that Outlook 2003 is the only office application worth upgrading from Office XP, and I wanted the additional features, such as spam filter so I decided to buy it. I'm not disappointed with the software especially with the easy on the eyes interface.
The upgrade from Outlook 2002 was seamless. Even my RSS News Feed Reader, NewsGator, integrated seamlessly with the new 2003 version without having to do anything.
The one bad thing about having a news feed reader is that when I go to unread messages, I no longer get my unread messages, because the first time I went there I had over 65536 messages that were old news and it took about an half an hour to count up all of the messages. I was not able to mark all of these messages as read (right click, "mark all read"), and even after I marked each folder as read manually, my unread mail folder is still stuck, so I removed it from my favorites list.
I like the spam filters, but there is no way to mark a spam message as being read and just leave it in the spam folder. You have to delete the message before the message count goes down.
About certain file extensions being blocked. If you really need to send a certain file extension that is blocked, you can rename the file to use another extension. For example rename program.exe to program.exeREMOVE. You may have to ask some people to rename their files before sending them, but it's better than getting a virus that is newly out in the wild because you thought it was trustable.
Also, I didn't see any ads in the program, so I'm not sure why someone would say it's adware.
The lack of integration with Word 2002 is not a problem since when word starts up as the email editor in Outlook 2002, it takes too long anyhow. I prefer the standard editor and just tell it to check spelling before sending instead of getting spelling tips while I type. You can still format a document using fonts and bold/italics with the standard editor. I never found any extra utility in having Word as the editor.
2003 version has a much better rules wizard. Right click on an email and select "create rule", and you get a cleaned up version of 2002's email rules interface that is easier to use.
The one annoying thing about Outlook 2003 is that whenever a message comes in, it appears above the icon tray on the task bar, and whenever it prepares a view and takes too long, a pop up dialog ala windows update says "Outlook is Preparing the Requested View". Since I don't like the cartoon dialog boxes popping up from my tray constantly I find this to be extra annoying.
Is it worth the price? Probably not, compared to other products, but on the other hand, it is better than Outlook 2002 and probably worth upgrading.

Wordperfect Office X4 Standard Upgrade Review

Wordperfect Office X4 Standard Upgrade
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a Mac person, but I have Windows XP on my iMac (had Vista, made the switch back, but that's another story), so installing WordPerfect was no problem. It installed quickly and with just a couple clicks I had a document open in Unity Mode on my computer. Using Fusion, one can completely hide XP, so it seems as if Windows programs are running natively on the Mac. It's important for me to say this, because I am, after all, running Windows in emulation. But tell it to WordPerfect. It's jack rabbit quick on my Mac.
I compared it to Nisus Writer, the premiere made for Mac only Word Processor and speed wise to my eyes, WordPerfect was every bit as quick. Compared it to Word for the Mac, just as fast. Even a Mac guy could live with this program. Printing, you get exactly what you see when you have your document open in Page Mode. The spell checker is as nifty as they come. The word you're currently typing appears in a little box in a ribbon at the top (if you have it open), so you know instantly if you've misspelled a word, because not only is it underlined in read (if you have that feature activated,) but it's in red in that little box, click the drop down menu and you'll usually find the correct spelling. Very cool, very fast.
I didn't like the word count at the bottom of the document. It's not live. You have to click on it to get your count, both Word and Nisus Writer have live word counts and that's kind of neat. That said, that is the only feature I'm not happy with. My only other problem is how the text looks on screen. If you're a Window's person you'll be happy with it, but text on Macs just looks better.
Still, I'll keep the program, because I just kind of like it. It's got a refreshing interface, clean -- and also because years ago I used to use WordPerfect for the Mac exclusively, but Apple changed chips and WordPerfect abandoned the platform, so now it seems like an old friend has come home, even though he really hasn't. Anyway, WordPerfect was a five star program back then, it still is.

This software is not worth upgrading. I think Access 2000 is the best database and 2002 is good if you want to use Data Access Pages. Access 2003 has a lot of bugs. I'm having trouble with basic formulas. This is very frustrating.
Be careful, especially if you don't have time to trouble shoot software changes.

I used previous versions of Visio Pro to build ER diagrams and create databases. It was a good tool. However, the 2010 version abandons any attempt to be useful in actual software development. You cannot generate databases from this product, as you can for others. If you just want flowcharts, stick with the standard version. If you want this for other functions, read other reviews. But if you want to use Visio as part of serious software development, do yourself a favor and don't try. Use Erwin instead.

Microsoft Visio Professional 2003 Review

Microsoft Visio Professional 2003
Average Reviews:

Visio 2003 Pro is a good product, but the fact that several key features are gone is the reason for a 3 star rating.
I use Visio 2003 Pro for general diagramming and for informal data modeling and process modeling in the course of developing system requirements. I used the simple data flow model diagram for years in Visio 2000, but 2003 has removed the "model" capabilities; it's just a picture now with no reusable components.
Pluses:
Good screen layout options
Still reverse-engineers databases
Better shape manipulation
Shape transparency
Minuses:
Removed "explorer" and modeling capabilities of Data Flow Model diagram
Does not generate DDL (Data Definition Language) anymore (need Visual Studio)
No longer exports to ERWin ERX files
Does not save to Visio 5 format (only 2002)
Removed Auto-Discovery
Removed a bunch of file converters and import tools
I recommend looking at Microsoft's "What you won't find in Microsoft Office Visio 2003" found at http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA010857571033.aspx.

Microsoft Visio Standard 2010 Review

Microsoft Visio Standard 2010
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This has several useful upgrade features but its main downside is the price, and there is no upgrade alternative.
PROS:
1. It is now fully compatible with Office 2007-2010
2. Added features allows for improved graphics
3. Some down-loadable features provide added scope.
4. Ease of integration with Office 2007 and 2010.
5. Can deliver somewhat compatible displays with Powerpoint
CONS
1. Price
2. There is a serious problem with certain bluetooth add-ins. When I first loaded it I had a Broadcom add-in and it caused crashes. I Googled the issue and found that you had to removed them totally. I could not remove the add-in since Visio denied access so I had to remove the software package. Then all worked well.
3. It lacks the vibrant styles available in Powerpoint and Word. The designs are rather simplistic and some are confusing given the color sets. It takes some time to get used to them.
As with most Microsoft products you must find the solutions to problems via Google. It is a shame that Microsoft has not made their problem resolutions easier. For example the bluetooth problem seems pandemic but Microsoft just seems to ignore it. It was not their problem as a cause so they just seem to drop the issue. Overall it has added value and ease of use, but again it is quite pricey for what it does.

Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 Upgrade Review

Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 Upgrade

The beta version arrived at my house, was installed, and had lots of bells and whistles. Fancy colors, buttons, etc. However, I am not sure that the changes are worth the kind of cash proposed by Microsoft's suggested retail price. Word, Access and Excel are basically the same programs as XP, Powerpoint has a few nicer features (it always has had nice features), and Outlook does have some data management not previously available. As a small business operator, I have found it much easier to track business contacts, emails, etc. I also have a FrontPage designed website. The new FrontPage has a nifty "split" screen which allows you to look at your HTML coding along with the actual published page, both at the same time. The new FrontPage also makes general HTML tagging, coding, and changing much more user friendly. However, it suffers from the traditional Microsoft misery; namely, the online help is virtually useless. This is also true for Publisher. You will spend lots of frustrating moments with both of those programs.

Microsoft Visio Professional 2007 Review

Microsoft Visio Professional 2007
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I been using Visio Enterprise 2003 for the last 3 years with Sql Server 2000. My only use of visio relates to database modeling. Once the drawing is been approved, I simply used "Update" option to update database. The update option is a time saving feature in a rapid application development environment for changing relationship, keys and constraints. Writing those changes back to Sql Server is a smooth process.
Recently i changed my development environment to SQL Server 2005 and figured out that Visio 2003 Enterprise does not work with SQL Server 2005. So I decided to buy visio professional 2007 to use the single feature of database modeling.
Upon installation, I figured that there is no option for writing changes back to SQL Server 2005 in either version of Visio (2003 Enterprise, 2007 Professional). In simple there is no "update" or "generate" command in visio professional 2007.
Put it simple. If you want to use database modeling and hoping to write those changes back to SQL Server 2005 with visio, DON'T BUT IT......IT WILL NOT WORK

Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Upgrade Review

Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Upgrade
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For anyone who uses Microsoft Exchange server, you need the full version of this product. That's all good and well. What is NOT good and well, however, is that Entourage still does not support key features of Outlook and Exchange: you cannot sync tasks and notes, you cannot archive, and you cannot import .PST files. Entourage does not support complex HTML, either, so forwarding or replying to a complex HTML email results in garbage HTML tags going to your recipient. In short, what should have been a triumph for Microsoft is a resounding dud. The Mac is still very much a second class citizen for Microsoft users in an enterprise. I hope Microsoft will immediately address Entourage. Sadly, in this release, they did next to nothing to provide serious Entourage improvements.
The other applications are mildly spruced up, and are now Universal (Intel) binaries, so they run faster on the new Macs, and are now feature set equivalent to Windows.
But if you are like me and 90% of your work day is spent on email, the lack of a serious equivalent to Outlook on the Mac makes this release a real disappointment. Entourage should have been brought up to Outlook-like capabilities, but it is far, far behind its Windows companion.
Personally, I would recommend using Apple's Mail and iCal, coupled with Apple's iWork products. I bought both and was hoping, frankly, for better from Office. I'm going back to iWork and Apple's applications and ripping out my Exchange server. Microsoft had four years to bring Entourage up to par. Instead they've delivered essentially a universal binary release on Entourage 2004. We Mac users deserve better.
