Axis & Allies: Iron Blitz Edition Review

Axis and Allies: Iron Blitz Edition
Average Reviews:

Despite the problems of this game (dim AI, some bugs), it is still the best strategy game I've ever played, next to chess. I've spent countless hours over-the-board, but now I can play with friends in about half the time with out all the mess. We used to constantly run out of chips, or scatter the pieces with the dice, or we'd argue about the rules.
The game has many new choices, including marines, destroyers, paratroopers, kamakazis, etc, and also the option to edit the pieces' or territories' statistics. Don't bother playing the computer, unless you're new to the game, because the only challenge is to see how quickly you can win. You can play multi-player from one computer, with a network card, or over the internet (MSN Zone). There are a few bugs, but save often and you won't have too many worries about it.
The game is out-of-print and Hasbro Interactive sold the rights to Infogrames, so your best bet is put in an "auction alert" on amazon and wait until you receive an email telling you that someone is selling it.

Haven't had a person around to play Scrabble with in years and miss having a GOOD game. You can set the levels from Novice to Tournament or anything in between with the Custom feature.
The online dictionary is handy (even though technically it shouldn't be used during play). You can hit a button to "define last" when the computer plays a word you're not familiar with. Other features include a list of "q" words without "u" and online help you can use based on the letters on your rack. I never use this because it's like cheating.
I'm enjoying it very much and got one for my mother as well. Haven't gone to play on Internet yet but may pursue that as well.

Hoyle Table Games 2004 Review

Hoyle Table Games 2004
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've owned several Hoyle games in the past and simply cannot recommend this one. The games themselves look interesting, but the intrusive copy restriction strongly weakens the value of this product. The fragile CD must be in the drive whenever the game is played (the copy restrictions also defeat virtual CD type programs).
While this may seem like a minor issue, it isn't for me. I was burned once by Sierra when they decided to drop replacement disks for another copy restricted game years ago. I refused to buy another product from them for several years, up until Hoyle Casino last year. Needless to say, I'm not exactly thrilled to see these types of copy restrictions again. Now that I've had a sample of the new copy restrictions, this alone will prevent me from buying any more Sierra games.
But that is not all that is wrong with Hoyle Table Games 2004. I was not able to get Maximum Pool to even run (WinXP). Sierra's solution (on their web site) is to disconnect any gamepad or joystick connected to the computer. Sadly, my computer throws a fit when the gamepad isn't attached (I often have to reinstall when I want to use it again).
Finally, like many Hoyle games, the AI seems heavily weighted in favor of the computer players. I've virtually given up on Hoyle Casino because of this (I almost always lose), and Hoyle Table Games may join Casino in the closet if I don't see better results. I like a challenge, but not to be defeated virtually every single time.
Anyway, that's my take on Hoyle Table Games 2004. Hopefully some of this will prove useful for you.

Hoyle Puzzle & Board Games 2009 Review

Hoyle Puzzle and Board Games 2009

If you already have the 2008 version, stick with that and forget about this 2009 version. If you don't have 2008, buy that instead of 2009. The only new games are some Big Bang games, and they are hardly enough to recommend this "update". You are forced to play with a snarky little Geni (I guess that is what he is), and these classic games are neither particulary interesting or engaging. One additional problem is that the CD is a little buggy (some stuttering and the "orange" screen of death after playing for a while). There is nothing new here to recommend this 2009 version.

Operation Mania Review

Operation Mania
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I never understood what it meant to get butterflies in your stomach or water in the knee. Worse yet I couldn't imagine how these strange conditions could be treated. Well thanks to the game Operation, I now know how to treat these conditions. You see, you really do have butterflies in your stomach and doctors use a net to scoop up all the butterflies (don't ask how they get it in there). Water in the knee? Easy, just grab a bucket and wait for all the water to come flying out and be careful not to miss a drop. These and many other fun minigame "maladies" are what you are treating when you play the game Operation.
But playing games isn't the only part to Operation. You see, like a hospital, you have to manage patients and get them where they need to go in a limited amount of time. Each patient has a special condition and some may require and x-ray, some may need to lay in a hospital bed for a while, and others may need surgery. As doctors know, the patients don't stop coming in and time is limited so do as much as you can and send patients to other hospitals if necessary. Don't let them pass away in your hospital or the patient dies which will affect your rating and end-of-game bonus. Collect enough bonus money and you can upgrade your hospital to accommodate more patients and treat them quicker. Treat enough patients and you'll start collecting trophies.
I liked the game and the beginning was extremely easy, almost geared toward young children, yet the final stages could barely be completed by the most hardened gamer. Frankly, I was getting so tired of all the whiny patients that I wanted them all to die. Some doctor I'd be, right? For a casual game it's too tough at the end and it'll make you rip your hair out. The minigames at the beginning are fun but get extremely repetitive and aggravating as you progress. The theme song is so annoying you want to gouge your eye out with a spoon and, finally, there are no instructions whatsoever. I know there's something to do with extra bonuses if you treat the same color patient in the same nurse station and bed, but the other bonuses I'm unaware of because I probably missed it somewhere in the game and there are no instructions to refer back to.
All in all the idea was transferred to the PC in a remarkable way. I'm sure you didn't want to move funny bones out of a patient, did you? Oh wait, that's in there too. Also, if you are a member of the Pogo site, you can accumulate tokens and badges that you can upload to your online account. There seem to be many badges available but even though the game is almost finished I seem to have collected only one. Again, would have been nice for some instructions.
Hope the review helped.

Once a world renowned surgeon, the doctor's career has been in critical condition in recent years. He's been offered a lifeline though -- if he can prove himself at a small, out-of-the-way, and somewhat run-down medical facility, he can revive his career and move on to better and more prestigious hospitals. Help the doctor manage the mayhem of a wacky emergency room and successfully treat patients with funatomy ailments like "butterflies in the stomach," earning money along the way to upgrade the hospital equipment. You're in charge of everything, from admitting patients to diagnosing and performing surgeries by completing micro games... and the clock is ticking. If you can help him provide top-notch care perhaps he can reestablish himself as the worldclass tweezer-wielder he is! But if you flounder -- your patients will lose their patience! Either way, OPERATION Mania will have you -- and your patients -- in stitches.

HOYLE Puzzle & Board Games (2010) Review

HOYLE Puzzle and Board Games (2010)
Average Reviews:

Why Encore feels the need to release yearly versions of the Hoyle series is totally beyond me. I think they spend most of their time designing a cool-looking box for the disk instead of improving the games themselves. I also feel that they are just assuming that by placing the "Hoyle" name on the box means that people will automatically buy their product.
The 2010 is basically identical to the 2009 version. The games don't appear to have been changed at all. In fact, all of the Hoyle games, (Card, Puzzle & Board), seem remarkably similar in gameplay as Hoyle versions of the last several years.
I also use Hoyle Table Games and Board Games from 2004. This is when they were made by Sierra. These titles work fine under Windows 7 and interestingly, they are just more fun. Newer doesn't always mean better in terms of software.
If you have any Hoyle Puzzle/Board/Table games from the past, you may as well skip the 2010 edition. You're just throwing good money away. Otherwise, find an older edition on eBay.
I'm fed up with Encore and these yearly titles that offer little in the way of new games or improvements to the games already included. Please do not fall for this sham like I did and save your $20.

Hoyle Card Games 2009
Huge disappointment. Graphics are new but the cards are so small they are hard to see. Even on full screen the cards are tiny and scrunched up too close together. Impossible to manipulate cards in the Canasta game. Very frustrating. Not at all as good as previous Hoyle Card Games. Don't buy this. You will regret it.
