(More customer reviews)I have been using this program full time since Aug 2009 developing thousands of slides, on numerous topics. The following is my ongoing journal. I foresee using this program for several more months before the product cycle ends...
Pros
1. Capturing a procedure is done fairly well. See item 12 below in the cons section. However, the output leaves a lot to be desired. If your presentation has a certain look and feel that you would like to match the raw capture is going to require editing - a lot of editing.
2. The on-board quiz/test generator is very easy to use and links to an LMS if one is setup to accept the data.
3. Setting up conditionals in the program for data-gathering and program manipulation is easy (provided you know what variables you would like to use and have a clear understanding of if...then statements).
4. Importing audio is easy. However, it must be edited and its final form before importing it to captivate. See items 7 and 19 in the cons section.
5. Rescaling of a project from one dimension to another, i.e. 800*600 to 1024*768 is very successful without distorting or compensating aspect ratio for the objects contained within.
6. The animation option is useful with the standard animations available, but they are limited and rather generic looking. Without an animation tool for creating/editing animations this feature is somewhat useful but limited in its applicability.
7. The ability to export the output in several output formats is a plus. However, the usefulness of these formats is condition specific.Cons
1. Captivate is operationally difficult to use.
2. Sometimes Captivate will not publish html/swf files with file names (title) exceeding more than a few characters - behavior is inconsistent. No Adobe documentation on file naming exists within the product manual or help files.
3. Over all object positioning and alignment in the development window is tedious. After custom alignment has been performed objects may move without prompt. Causes a great deal of rework.
4. Button object alignment using the text button feature appears normal in the development file but "may" be disjointed in the published version. Auto-align does not necessarily fix it.
5. Sometime hyperlinks to external files from within an .exe fail - inconsistent.
6. Sometimes hyperlinks revert to default file locations.
7. Open File or URL feature - This feature does not work as advertised. Sometimes designators to another file/url that are supposed to open in the current window fail. The current program just stalls and no action takes place. The only method I have been able to count on consistently is to designate that the file be opened in a new browser.
8. "Text to Speech" feature is to robotic sounding for final audio production.
9. The audio editing capabilities of Captivate are too rudimentary for audio editing.
10. Object orientation is limited to upright - no rotating of objects within the development environment.
11. Presentation Slide audio only appears on one time line. Additional audio must be created, removed, and reattached to other objects on the page if the audio is to be associated to an object event and not to timeline position.
12. The default TOC feature is clumsy unless you anchor it to a specific position.
13. Captured procedures require a great deal of editing and timing adjustment to be useful mid-stream in a presentation. Not as straight-forward as advertised.
14. Users must wait for captivate generated html pages (final output) to fully load before clicking any object of the page will stall and must be reloaded.
15. The global setting feature is great, unless you apply it.
16. The lock slide/object feature is slow to respond if using more than a few objects (20 or more) on a slide.
17. Roll-Over images, Roll-Over text, and the zoom area features are difficult to manage once more than a few instances are needed.
18. The over-all limit to 45-50 slides per presentation is a serious limitation for developing complex topics. Exceeding this causes many performance issues during and after development. Development file size that exceeds a few megabytes seems to cause the program to behave inconsistently. Source files are prone to crashing, and are generally unrecoverable.
19. Sometimes (often) saving a file fails but the program doesn't crash, it just closes. The Adobe Connect Pro user community recommends copying the slides to another file and save the new file.
20. Audio elements or queues sometimes have an inordinate amount of pops, static and clicks.
21. Hyper linking to files outside of a captivate file does not guarantee navigation back to the original file, and does not guarantee that the file will return to the last page viewed from the hyper-linked page.
22. The in-development review feature doesn't really show all the elements of a slide as it is intended. Review requires fully loading one of the simulated options or actually publishing the file to see if it functions as expected.
23. The Flash video option is useless without a flash generator/editing program to support it.
24. Sometimes, zooming into a slide when editing will render the file unusable.
25. Sometimes slide objects become unusable and must be replaced. If a slide object cannot be deleted the slide must be completely recreated.
26. Slide editing becomes increasingly sluggish as numerous elements are added to the slide.
27. Once an object has been created it may not be editable. Sometimes an object will accept a modification of settings, but not reflect those changes in the working or final version.
28. Font scripts in some text boxes are cut off by two or three pixels. The phenomenon seems to be largely absent if a text box is created and not adjusted for font size, color, or position. Of course there are adjustments for each of these properties and not being able to customize the properties without causing a flaw in the final product is in contradiction to the very existence of the property adjustment!
29. Button pause features do not necessarily pause slide audio!
30. Scripts and variables for custom interactions are very difficult to use. The scripting dialogue is inadequate, it does not behave predictably, and there is very little documentation on the topic available from either adobe or the public domain. Without this feature, complex navigation feedback is impossible.
31. The program locks up quite often. No matter whether you save often or not, just a few minutes of work in captivate is a lot of lost work. So, unless you're in the habit of saving after every single action you have performed, you will lose some work every time you use captivate.
32. When using the preview feature (F8) the program will occasionally stall. It's a waiting game. The program may restart after a few minutes (6-10) if you're lucky. This behavior is inconsistent. Wednesday Jan 6th around 9AM, program locked up for 15 minutes when running a preview. The same file had been being used for preview without any disruption in process prior to the malfunction. Same file acted normally until Friday the 8th when the program locked up again on a different file. This event started at 8:45AM. The condition is maintaining itself at 9:08AM. Program is now active again at 9:10 AM. Using the preview feature again at 10:05 AM. The program has stalled and is still inactive at 10:14 AM. At 10:18 AM the program is still inactive. At 10:24 AM the program is still inactive. At 10:30 AM the program is still inactive. At 10:35 AM the program is still inactive. At 10:41 the program is still inactive. Program cleared and started responding again at 10:46 AM. Tuesday, January 12, 2009: I started the F8 preview three times this morning and each of the two first times the preview opened, functioned normally and closed. I initiated a third time at 9:05 AM and it has stalled taking my system hostage for the last 18 minutes. The program released itself at 9:24 AM.
33. When adding an image to a slidelet the first attempt at configuring the new image in the slide may appear fuzzy or out of focus in the development window and the final output after publishing. Usually redoing the image add work will clear up the focus. While this isn't usually a crisis, it does require that the developer do the same task twice on a regular basis.
34. File/slide progress can be stilted from a non-identifiable cause. After developing numerous slides with similar elements one slide started pausing after .1 seconds, and remained in this mode for the entire progress of the slide. Nothing I could find with any single element of the slide had the property to allow for this type of behavior. The only way to get the slide to progress was to continually click the play button. It was possible to skip the slide by forcing advance using the customized buttons, but the only way to see the entire contents in the timeline for the slide was in .1 second increments - like watching a film one frame at a time. Resolution: created a whole new blank file, imported all existing slides and objects from offending file into new blank file. Problem solved...
35. Linking programs together is problematic. When developing a project I had decided to use the linking feature that would allow the end of one file to prompt the opening of another. Adobe Photoshop CS3 Upgrade Review

(More customer reviews)Reviewing a new release of Photoshop is a bit like tackling Mt. Everest as the program is so huge that it is simply impossible to cover in depth without writing a book. Still, given that the program is far from cheap, some basic information might help a few people decide whether it's worth the price of admission.
Since this review is for the upgrade, I assume you have used Photoshop before and have basic familiarity with how it works. Primarily, you should ask yourself whether the increased functionality of CS3 over CS2 (and possibly older editions if you haven't kept up with past upgrades) is enough to justify the purchase. I'll cheat a bit and tell you up front that it is easily worth it and then spend the rest of the review trying to explain why.
The first big change that I noticed came when I opened my first file into the Camera Raw utility. Two new sliders have been added. One helps recover blown highlights and the other retrieves blocked shadows. These functions certainly have limits but both proved themselves useful almost immediately. Within reasonable limits, you can definitely push exposures further while maintaining the integrity of your photos at the highs and lows than you could have dreamed of in the past.
Also, you can now use the Camera Raw utility on JPEG and TIFF files as well. It is important to remember, however, that it will not be as effective. Raw files are literally raw and unprocessed so that you can set the assumptions in your computer instead of the camera locking it in when processing the image. Since some of the original data is discarded in the process of making a JPEG file, you won't get the same benefits but this is still a worthwhile tool.
The next benefit I found in CS3 was the addition of filters that can now be used similarly to adjustment layers. Never again will you have to apply a filter and leave a permanent effect that can neither be reviewed nor edited in the future. CS3 allows us to convert layers into Smart Objects and any filter applied to that layer will then be stored and available for editing, deleting, etc. I am most grateful to the folks at Adobe for what is surely one of the most requested upgrades in the history of Photoshop.
Beyond the few items I've mentioned already, there are many other changes. Everything from the Print screen to the basic user interface has gone through an overhaul and in virtually all cases I would suggest that the change is an improvement. Bridge thumbnails have been sped up dramatically, a new Quick Selection tool is a huge help, a major breakthrough in converting color images to Black & White has been implemented... and on and on. I wasn't kidding when I said it would take a book to cover it all. In the final analysis, let me say that in just a week of using this program, I'm already 100% sold on it. I know that I have not yet uncovered many of its benefits and it will probably not be until some of the CS3 reference books hit the street that we can start mining the program's full potential. But I would buy this if I all I got was the new Camera Raw program and the non-destructive filters. Everything else (and there is a LOT) is almost gravy after that. Anyone serious about editing photos should buy the upgrade to CS3.

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 Upgrade Review

(More customer reviews)When Adobe first released the public beta of the original Lightroom, it seemed like a desperate attempt to compete with Apple's Aperture which Apple seemed to be using to target Adobe's flagship creative tool, Photoshop.
Upon using the beta, however, it became apparent that this was a tool that Adobe had been putting a lot of thought into and while the decision to offer the free public beta may have been an attempt to stave off possible Aperture defectees, the development of the software itself clearly was more than that.
Adobe's new tool would come to herald in a nondestructive editing and organizational workflow that simply would never be possible in the full version of Photoshop without seriously jeopardizing functionality and workflows for existing users.
Today, Lightroom 2 takes that original concept to the next level. Boasting even more powerful non-destructive editing, tighter integration with the full version of Photoshop and a revised and even more streamlined interface (Adobe listened), it is well worth the upgrade price.
If you don't have Lightroom yet and are wondering why you would buy it when you already have Photoshop, ask yourself this: Do you have a digital camera and do you take a lot of pictures with it? If so, does taking them all into Photoshop for adjustments seem time consuming? Does the added storage for saving originals and adjusted copies seem excessive? Do you wish that Bridge acted more like a database than a browser and maybe had the ability to keep track of files even when they weren't available (external or networked hard drive that aren't always available for instance)?
If so, Lightroom may be the tool for you. Will it replace Photoshop? No, but an easy way to think of it is as a tool for dealing with many images that need global adjustments with a few touch-ups where as Photoshop is the tool you'll turn to for composite images and major touch-up/cleanup.
Can you do what you need to in Photoshop without Lightroom? Of course - Photoshop is the top of the line Swiss Army Knife of image editing. Will you be able to work as quickly and efficiently in it as you would Lightroom? Seriously doubtful.

Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Standard Review

(More customer reviews)Having purchased and been very happy with Acrobat 4-6 standard editions, I am sorry to say Version 7 is real step backwards for Adobe:
-- The program will not read many pdf documents Acrobat 4-6 will (this may some sort of font copyright problem or just a flaw in this version of the software).
-- The Activation process is tedious, difficult and prevents you from using your own software, even if you only install it on one machine.
Having purchased this software almost a year ago, I uninstalled it because it did not read files Acrobat 6 does, as mentioned above. I thought this might be a bug in the program which Adobe would fix. So I installed and uninstalled it several times, each time the program would not work. Now the program tells me I have activated it too many times, though I have no working copy of the program. The software tells me to call Adobe customer support, but after keeping me in a computer loop for 10 minutes I learn the "call center" is closed, or there is simply no answer after 50 minutes.
If I could return this software I would. It does not work. I can't return my copy, but you don't have to buy a copy. Stick with 6.0 or the cheaper Scansoft program. Acrobat 7.0 does not work, and after a time Adobe won't let you use, even if you buy it, full price.

Adobe Creative Suite 4 Master Collection Review

(More customer reviews)Adobe has made a push in recent years to integrate all of their creative programs into an enormous suite of high powered tools that you can use in combination to create broad accessible content.
In one box you get some creative powertools: (among many others) Premiere, After Affects, Flash, Illustrator, Dreamweaver and of course, Photoshop. There are many other programs that I didn't necessarily have interest in, but they are handy to have in a pinch plus they will give me something to build more skill in.
This is a true professional suite of programs, and whats great about this is that there are enough similarities between the programs that you'll be able to understand the layouts between the programs with relative ease.
Two warnings: This is overkill, chances are you only really want a few of the programs (in my case Photoshop, Premiere, After Affects and Dreamweaver) but if you have three Adobe products on your "wishlist" then you might want to consider the whole shebangabang of the Master Collection since the other programs are then kind of a bonus and will give you something to work on.
The other warning (coming from someone who got this with the amazing academic/student discount) is that you better have a strong system to run Premiere, After Affects and the other video/Premiere related programs. I definitely need a memory upgrade(and ideally a new computer!) to accommodate that behemoth.
But finally, I would say, while four figures is a high price for software you are getting a tremendous package and if you are able to qualify for an academic discount you should jump on this. Adobe's price is around a fifth the price of the retail version. As a student who is trying to develop marketable skills this is a package that will make you a master.

(More customer reviews)At this point, I'd strongly suggest that you not buy this version and instead wait for the CS4 version of InDesign, which should be coming out in October 2008. Here's a review of the new features it offers.
INDESIGN CS4
What's great about this upgrade is that no particularly category of user is slighted. Those who deal with graphics rich documents get Smart Guides and an improved Links panel. Those who work with long, complex documents get cross-references and Smart Text Reflow. Those who do catalogs get conditional text and direct-to-PDF output. Those into multimedia get Flash output two ways. For everyone there's an improve user interface that includes tabbed windows for those have more windows open than they have display space. Finally, almost everyone seems delighted by a surprise new feature, GREP styles, which is great for taking care of all the niggling little formatting chores inside a paragraph. All these features save time and make the work go smoother.
It is true that Adobe might have done more. ID still won't let a paragraph style define a heading spanning multiple columns. One Adobe programmer told me that required hard work, text in columns has to be organized to end in a nice row before the heading. That may be true, but other products do it, including the two-decade old FrameMaker, and the alternative is clumsy fiddling with frames that get out of kilter in the text or formatting is changed. As it stands now, Smart Text Reflow and Conditional Text can't be used with multi-column plus heading text.
And in the timesaving department, linking frames is still the Nuisance of Nuisances. ID needs Named Frames, which would allow users to attach a name to all frames in the same sequence, something particularly useful for magazines and newspapers Add another feature called Smart Frames, which would automatically link all frames in a specific order--top to bottom, right to left, lower to higher page--and linking frames would become easy. Those who want something unusual could still do things the old way.
In short this is a solid and useful upgrade for almost anyone who uses ID more than occasionally. It'll save you time and let you produce more complex, better looking documents with less effort. If you use ID more than a few hours a week, this is a must-have upgrade.

If you are a QuarkXpress user, you'll find that in InDesign CS2, you get the feeling that it is laid out in a logical and easy-to-use manner. The tools and tool palettes are where you'd expect them to be in the menu structure and on the screen. Small touches like being able to save your workspace, like you can do in Photoshop CS2, are great.
I tested the integration between InDesign CS2 and some of its counterparts in the Adobe Creative Suite Premium. I created different graphics in Photoshop CS2 and Illustrator CS2 and I found it was really easy to import them into InDesign CS2 and use. You can effects like drop shadows and feathering to images directly in InDesign CS2. No need to go to another program. With the Control Palette you can also resize objects too. This palette functions with Transform and Stroke features for graphics, and it includes paragraph, character and table features for text editing. What the palette does is affected by the type of selection you have made - either graphic or text.
I imported some formatted text in from Microsoft Word 2003 and two different tables in from Microsoft Excel 2003. I was concerned how the tables would appear after the import from Microsoft Excel. The tables imported easily. With InDesign CS2, you can now automatically style Microsoft Word files on import by mapping Word styles to InDesign CS2 styles as well.
An issue for a long time has been how to preview or view other types of files that you want to incorporate with InDesign CS2. Now, Adobe "bridges" that gap. Bridge now comes as a part of InDesign CS2 and the Premium Suite. So, viewing any Adobe-type formatted file or standard graphic format is easy to do. Using the same interface between the different programs is a help as well. Adobe Bridge is a standalone program.
Being a Web Designer and using Adobe (formerly Macromedia) Dreamweaver 8, I was familiar with using Snippets. These are portions of code you can save for use in other programs or you can export them to give to someone else. Now, InDesign CS2 offers this Snippet capability. You can export objects as snippets. These objects can be shared or reused in other documents. Simply place or drag a snippet into a layout, and InDesign re-creates the original objects, their formatting, and their relative positioning on the page. No more wasted time redesigning, just to get something you have brought in from another document to fit.
InDesign CS2 also now has an Info palette that is just like those found in Photoshop and Illustrator. Size dimensions and resolution are immediately available by selecting the graphic and simply glancing over to the Info palette. This is a crucial tool when fitting graphics in a specifically space-limited area. It's important to know the actual dimensions with which you are working.
Sometimes in designing and re-designing printed work, you have to move objects. When this happens, your structure can often change in different ways. InDesign CS2 helps you maintain your layout by allowing you to anchor your callouts, pull quotes, margin notes, and graphics to text. You can now precisely control the positioning of Anchored Objects, apply text wrap settings, and more.
As with other Adobe products, it is very easy to export your finished work in PDF format. InDesign CS2 works so well at exporting to PDF, it even maintains the layers in Acrobat 7. You can pre-define your Acrobat export settings as well. InDesign CS2 also supports specialty PDF formats like PDF/X-1a and PDF/X-3, which are used in workflows. It also supports high-resolution CMYK output and color-managed workflows.
If you are familiar with previous versions of InDesign, the upgrade to the new version is easy. InDesign CS2 is even backwards compatible CS. You will find that your learning curve is greatly decreased.

(More customer reviews)I've been using Photoshop Elements for a few years now, and it was okay, but I upgraded my camera a year ago and started using Adobe Lightroom (another product that rocks my boat!), and I wanted to use a product that was well-integrated with Lightroom; Elements just wasn't there. Enter CS5.
I forgot to mention, too, that I recently made the switch to a Mac at home, so I needed to buy new licenses for everything anyhow. Not only was I looking for a photo editor and a DAM (digital asset manager) tool, I needed a panorama stitcher and an HDR tool. Lightroom is taking care of DAM, and CS5 is taking care of the rest.
PRO's:
* Everything is integrated under one roof for me -- basic image editing, HDR, panorama generation.
* If you have used Elements in the past, you already know part of the program...stuff is basically in the same places, and there's more features to do almost anything imaginable.
* Content-aware fill is almost unbelievable!
CON's:
* Price. Even at Amazon's lower price, it ain't chump change.
* Learning curve. Even though I've used Elements for a while, there is so much to this program that I need to learn. Guess I better buy some books from Amazon and get cranking!

Puppet Warp Puppet Warp gives you more freedom when pushing and pulling elements within an image. The feature lets you recompose an image to make it more appealing, or to fit a specific layout, by allowing the precise repositioning of any element within a Photoshop document, or selection, by simply clicking and dragging. After you reposition an object, Photoshop adjusts the rest of the image to account for the shifted pixels.
After choosing Edit > Puppet Warp, click on your image to drop pins establishing anchor points where you want image parts not to move, and handles that you can use for warping. Then drag any of the pins to reposition the picture elements. Use Puppet Warp to swing a raised arm to a person's side, warp and stretch text to create new effects, or reposition intrusive objects in a photo to create a more pleasing composition.
Automated lens correction The Lens Correction features in Photoshop CS5 create better quality captures by removing or correcting the three most common lens-based errors: geometric distortion, chromatic aberration, and vignetting. This means you can use a wider range of lenses with the confidence of producing images of the highest quality. With the aid of the Adobe Lens Profile Creator (available separately as a free download from labs.adobe.com) you can produce custom profiles characterizing the optical aberrations of your camera lenses. When installed and selected in the Lens Correction filter in Photoshop CS5, the profile automatically removes or corrects the three types of distortion.
The Lens Correction filter in Photoshop CS5 is redesigned to include manual adjustment controls under the Custom tab, and settings for locating and applying custom Lens Correction Profiles (LCP files) under a new Auto Correction tab. Installed profiles that match your camera and lens combination are used to apply precise distortion corrections to your photos. Suitable profiles can be located easily based on the EXIF data automatically recorded with the image, and if a suitable profile is not present in the Lens Correction filter, then with a single click within the dialog box, you can search online for the correct profile to meet your needs.
Individual error types can be selected in the filter's settings, as can options for handling any transparent areas that surround the corrected image.

(More customer reviews)If you are design professional and you use CS3 or an older version, I highly recommend this upgrade; the advances in both CS4 and CS5, rolled into this CS5 package, are well worth the money if you make your living using Adobe software. However, it is well worth your time to explore all the new features; it always amazes me how many design professionals use only the most elementary features of the software, and do not really use even those to their potential. If you are a hobbyist or home user, without design training and with only basic design needs, any of the Adobe applications are probably overkill.
If you already have CS4, you should explore Adobe's website which describes the new features in detail, and decide for yourself if they are worth the upgrade price. For me, even a CS4 to CS5 upgrade is worthwhile; however, I would readily admit that for many basic to moderate users, the improvements would not justify the expense.
You will get the most bang using this software with OS X 10.6 on a somewhat newer machine, and I'd highly recommend at least 6GB RAM; 8GB or more wouldn't hurt.
If you don't need the 3D features or other advanced scientific features in Photoshop, etc., you should consider the Design Standard version instead.
