Garmin MapSource City Navigator Europe (CD-ROM) Review

Garmin MapSource City Navigator Europe (CD-ROM)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just returned from a trip to Europe. For our trip we flew in to Rome, drove to a rural area an hour outside Florence, spent a week there and drove to Florence, then on to Parma, the Loire valley and finally on to Paris. I purchased this software with the Garmin GPSMap 60Cx and offer the following comments.
1 - Ignore the picture showing V6 - This REALLY is version 8 for sale.
2 - The software was mostly easy to use. The download / upload process was relatively pain free and reasonably fast. There is no need to delete the existing maps in the unit before loading a new map in - your upload simply writes over the current maps.
3 - The only bugs I noticed have to do with getting at the underlying directions for Routes you create. I found that selecting the route did not always work, but that clicking on the route on the map and then clicking on Properties to get to the Directions solved the problem.
4 - The turn-by-turn directions were mostly spot on. However there were some places in Italy where I ran in to areas that were recently / currently under construction and in these areas, some wrong turns were indicated. The most useful feature in these circumstances was the automatic recalculation for directions.
5 - When you zoom in to a quarter mile radius, the location of restaurants, local attractions, etc show up with useful symbols, sometimes with amusing results. Outside the door of our hotel in Florence I turned on the unit and saw no fewer than 15 pizza symbols (pizzerias) within 2 blocks of our hotel.
Now on to the cons
6 - The Route function does not seem to work as advertised. You are supposed to be able to create a Route between two or more points on your computer and then download them to your device. The only problem is that the Route only works if you also include ALL of the map segments between the points. With a 64 MB limit on my device, this was often impossible. The result is that I had to download subsets of the map segments for my drive from Parma to Paris and then create routes for segments of the drive. If I did not have my laptop with me, I would have been out of luck.
A couple of suggestions for version 9. Please break up some of the larger areas into smaller maps. On the segment from Geneva to Paris, I passed through the very northwest corner of one map segment for maybe 15 miles. However I had to load the ENTIRE 6 MB segment in to memory. Alternatively, if the Route function can allow you to load in only the portion of the segment you will drive through, I would be VERY happy.
Also, I was shocked to find that the toll through the Mont Blanc tunnel was 39 euros. There were also numerous other tolls along the way from Parma to Paris - totaling over 115 euros. It would be nice to know this in advance to allow for planning purposes. Considering the fact that thousands of pizzerias are pre-loaded, information about toll roads doesn't seem like too much to ask for.

Garmin nüvi 1300T GPS Navigation System Review

Garmin nüvi 1300T GPS Navigation System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Garmin 1300T is a nice GPS navigation device with the usual features, plus the additional great feature of FREE lifetime traffic information. But there are two things you need to know about the traffic information feature. First, in order for it to work, the device needs to be connected to the charger, and the charger needs to be plugged into the car cigarette lighter. This is because the antenna receiving the traffic info is located on the charger wire. The traffic information feature will not work if the device not connected to the car through the charger. Second, the traffic information feature also provides advertising - the advertisers are apparently the ones who are paying Garmin and the traffic system so that you can have free traffic info. The advertisements show up on a small line at the bottom right of the screen when the device is in the traffic info mode (which is a separate display from the navigation mode). Note of this is explained in the very brief quick-start guide. Another thing a buyer should know is that an 100/220 volt "home" charger is NOT included in the box. Also a case for the device is NOT included in the box. But you can buy these separately for additional money. My only criticism is that all of these things are not clearly brought to the attention of the buyer before the purchase.

Garmin nüMaps Lifetime Map Update for North America & Europe Review

Garmin nüMaps Lifetime Map Update for North America and Europe
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There is no faster way to purchase a lifetime subscription to updates for your Garmin GPS, add to the shopping cart, check out, and an activation code is delivered immediately. This is also a very scary method to spend this much money and get nothing physical to show for it, right? Have no fear; the code works just as well if you get it electronically or on a plastic gift card.
This is well near a brilliant plan for owners of Garmin GPS's. Pay one time; get up to four updates per year to your core GPS map software, for the life of your device. I've actually paid more than the price of this subscription to update one of my GPS's. So this was a no brainer for me.
The part that is particularly tough, there are no instructions on how to actually use this code. The following will walk you through the steps to an update.
First step - go to the Garmin Website and verify that the exact model of GPS you own is listed. Don't assume your model is listed - go to the website and verify it is really listed first. The list is huge, long, major long. Amazon also has a compatibility checker at the top of the product page. You can also email Garmin to be certain this will work with your model if you have separately purchased the European maps and added them to your GPS.
Let me clarify the European Map deal - some models come with Europe built in, those will show up in the compatibility checker (a Nuvi 670 has NA and European maps installed from the factory). If you bought a unit that only has North American detail maps - this product WILL NOT add Europe to your unit. You must first purchase the European maps, install them, and then use this update subscription.
Second Step - order this 'gift card' from Amazon and get the activation code.
Third Step - make sure you know your MyGarmin user name and password - if not create an account. If you've had a GPS for longer than 1 year, you should have an account.
Fourth Step - Plug your GPS into your computer with a USB cable. Go to the mygarmin website. Log into your account. And then select the MyMaps tab. Beside your GPS you will see a link for Activate Gift Card. You enter the code from Amazon in the box labeled Product Key.
Now the automatic stuff happens. The product key is validated, and then starts the download process. First it checks your computer, then checks for your device, then checks for compatibility, and then launches a download manager. You will see a pop up and you'll have to give permissions like 10 times before the manager installs, and starts the download.
Don't be afraid of the download manager. It's simple and only works with Garmin's website. It won't trash your computer.
Now the part to be afraid of - my first update to my Nuvi 765T is 1.92Gb. So you darn well better have a very fast internet connection (my comcast connection did that download in around 20 minutes) or you'll need to start this up before you go to bed at night and just let it run.
Last step, once the download manager has downloaded the whole file (you can check a box that says "close when done" and "launch when done"), click on Launch on the download manager box. The file will extract to the destination folder you set up in the early steps of download. Once extracted, the update program will run. The prompts there are simple and straightforward. I'm not sure what the update speed depends on, but they warn you it can take up to 2 hours. Mine updated in around 10 minutes.
An important caveat that you cannot miss. This is for ONE GPS. ONLY ONE GPS. You cannot use this same code to update other Garmin GPS's. It does update both NA and Europe on that one device. You have to purchase a second card to update more units.
Honestly, if you buy two updates to your GPS, this card pays for itself. I really love the "no questions asked" quarterly updates to my GPS.
Type nuvi tips and tricks into your favorite search engine. The first hit is a resource on how to better use your Nuvi. It's a fantastic site with hundreds of tips.

The map updates have many bad addresses for businesses and points of interest. The original maps that came with my Garmin had the correct addresses, but the update seems to have put many points of interest at incorrect locations.
Another thing to be aware of is that Garmin will not transfer the "lifetime" updates to a replacement unit. My GPS was stolen about a month after I purchased the update package and Garmin customer support's answer was too bad, buy another. A few key strokes in their database and I would still be a loyal Garmin customer, but their products just aren't that amazing on their own.

Garmin nüMaps Onetime Map Update for US & Canada Review

Garmin nüMaps Onetime Map Update for US and Canada
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The last time we updated maps on our StreetPilot 330 was a couple of years ago. The CD didn't work with Macs even though the GPS and the map update CD both had Mac compatibility listed on the packaging. I had to take the CD back to the retail store and they updated the maps from a store computer. It took like an hour.
Last night, we purchased the digital version of the update here at Amazon, since my husband was going on the road today. I was praying it would work. Here's what happened.
After purchase, we got a code from Amazon. The screen to return this code took a couple of minutes (longer than expected) but I didn't refresh or anything so it eventually came through.
I used this code over at Garmin's site along with our pre-existing user ID and password there (yes, if you don't have one already, you need to register there). In return, the Garmin site gave me another code that I needed to use on the computer when installing the map update.
I hooked the GPS in to my Mac Mini via USB. The Garmin site said that we needed a firmware update so I downloaded and installed that. No problems (unlike the past experience, the Mac seemed well supported).
Then we downloaded the maps. Took about 20 min. on a Verizon FIOS connection. The Garmin downloader Java applet will lock up your web browser till it's done, which personally I don't like, and doesn't give the user feedback as to progress (at least on a Mac) but it did work.
After the file downloaded, I installed the maps. Everything was fine except for trying to install the entire North America first (the 330 doesn't have enough storage to do this). Once I scaled back to just the US it was OK. Took about 20-30 minutes to download the maps to the GPS.
It's done, my hubby is happy, and hopefully the GPS won't show him falling into the Potomac any more as he travels past DC (as one example).
My recommendation if you want to try the digital download...take it slow, don't refresh screens or assume something is not working while the files are downloading. It worked well for us.

The only drawback to this is that it takes time. About two hours to download @ 2.6mps DSL and approximately another two hours to install. The size of the file was 2.02 GB. If you are on Dial-up, forget it. You don't have to attend the download, but you do need to be present at the install to click I agree and OK a few times. Once it is installed, everything worked with no hitches of any kind. While I haven't used it on the road yet, I was able to determine there was substantial updates in the data file for all of the various type things that you might be looking for, i.e., restaurants, service stations, etc.
All of my old settings remained the same, recently found items remained the same, etc. What you are purchasing from Amazon is the product key and you then go to the Garmin site and download the software. I updated from the 2008 version.
