(More customer reviews)When computer users were searching for a term to apply to computer programs that came loaded with viruses, harmful DRM (Digital Rights Management) or other insidious ways of slowing down the user's computer, they eventually settled on "Malware."
Its time to coin a new term for programs like McAfee Total Protection. My complaints against the program are only partially related to its ability to filter out viruses and keep a computer free of junk.
The real issue with this program, and many, many others is that it will constantly steal the users focus by popping up text boxes from the Taskbar in Windows. These can come at ANY time the computer is on. They alert the user to the fact that "McAfee has installed updates," or "It is time to restart the computer" to the neverendingly frustrating "Your subscription is about to expire." These boxes can and will pop up while immersed in a full screen computer game, at times causing it to crash. They will pop up when you are working on editing digital photos, or watching a movie, or anything else that requires your full attention.
The term "nagware," came to mind, and maybe it will stick. Feel free to put your suggestions in the comments section of this review.
I understand why they do this. It is intended for novice computer owners who need to be reminded of all of these things, and who don't consider having their 'focus' (the primary task the computer user is working on. For example, as I write this review, it is my primary focus) stolen as EXTREMELY frustrating. That wouldn't even be a big deal, except that McAfee in their infinite wisdom has provided no remedy for the power user. We cannot turn off these irritating messages. They come regardless of my desire to see them or not.
They are amazingly irritating, especially if they disrupt something immersive, like a computer game or movie. Imagine: you are watching your new blue-ray of "The Dark Knight," and just as Batman is about to dispense with the Joker, a text box pops up with the message "McAfee has finished installing updates" in a gray box in the corner of the screen. Unacceptable in the first place, and even more so because you CANNOT TURN THIS FEATURE OFF! This gets unbearable when your subscription is a few months from expiring, and alerts informing you of that pop up literally every time you use the computer. Also, they don't just leave after they pop up, the user is required to click 'ok.' You cannot permanently disable these messages.
As a virus scanner, McAfee works relatively well. It will scan your system for viruses, and if your definitions are up-to-date, find them some of the time. However, it is pretty strange that after making virus software for so many years, they still cannot provide a reasonably well working Spyware hunter that is anywhere near as good as the free version of "Ad-Aware" offered by Lavasoft, or the retail version of "Spybot Search and Destroy."
Another major complaint is the sheer size of the system resource footprint that McAfee total protection takes up. If you have an older computer, less than 2gb of ram (4gb with Vista), this program will create a very noticeable slowdown in your computer's performance. Comparing to how it runs on my wife's laptop with 4gb of ram vs. some of the computers at my work with only 1.5gb, the older work computers are drastically slowed down by McAfee, while my wife's laptop with its 4gb of ram is not really affected. (I do not use this program on my computer for the reasons that I've laid out above).
In concussion, if you don't care about 1. Annoying pop ups that steal your focus and cannot be disabled, 2. Very limited spyware removal and 3. Slow and poorly written code that uses a large portion of system resources, you MIGHT consider buying this software.

Still have this program installed on my wife's laptop, and it's still popping up annoying and useless advertisements despite the fact that I've turned off all notifications in the options tab--you can see the most recent one that I took a screen shot of in the 'customer images' section of this Amazon page. When the license runs out in a few months I will be uninstalling this program and replacing it with AVAST home edition which is free. I can't recommend this program to anyone. Save yourself the money and get a free alternative like AVAST or AVG.

Microsoft has recently released their excellent MICROSOFT SECURITY ESSENTIALS for fee. It also recently won an award for being the best anti-virus program out there. Bests of all it's FREE to anyone with a valid copy of Windows (XP through Windows 7). I've been using it for a few months now and let me tell you, it's just about the best anti-virus I've encountered. Searches are wicked fast, the interface is slick, and best of all it has a tiny memory footprint! Updates are free FOREVER. Did I mention the program itself is completely free? Just Google search MICROSOFT SECURITY ESSENTIALS, download, install, and you're good to go.

PC Tools Spyware Doctor with Antivirus 2010 Review

(More customer reviews)I'm sure this software is effective -- in fact in initial scans it caught lots of adware that Webroot Spysweeper never did -- but it's such a resource hog that my entire PC now works very slowly. Apps open more slowly, and IE7 also barely moves. I disabled a couple of the guards and that helped, but of course then it leaves me more vulnerable. In addition, an e-mail to Support 2 weeks ago still has not been answered. This was highly rated by some PC magazines, but overall I'm very disappointed.

McAfee VirusScan / Firewall Plus 2006 Bundle Review

(More customer reviews)There are three components to look at in this McAfee Bundle: The VirusScan version 10.0 component, the Firewall Plus version 7.0 component, and the SecurityCenter component, also known by many as the blatant advertising component.
I'll talk more about the SecurityCenter in a little bit. First let's review the VirusScan and Firewall Plus components first.
VirusScan 2006 version 10.0:
Considering all of the time I spend on my computer, whether it be writing a paper, surfing the World Wide Web, chatting with friends on IRC or through instant messaging, it's amazing that I only encounter a few contaminated files and programs a year (I'm not complaining, mind you). Thankfully, I have had a McAfee virus scanner on my computer since day one. And to this day, I have never had a virus or worm successfully infect my computer.
Installation is relatively easy. (WARNING: Even though the Quick Start Guide does not say to, I recommend that you uninstall all McAfee programs before installing VirusScan 2006. In the past, McAfee has recommended that you do this because of the conflicts that often developed when installing the newest VirusScan. McAfee may have worked through those old conflict issues, but it's better to be safe than sorry. Also, make sure you disconnect from the Internet before you uninstall your old VirusScan. There are worms out there today that can infect your computer just by you being on the Internet.) Even though I uninstalled all of my McAfee products first, I was able to install, update, and adjust the settings in less than 10 minutes. I experienced no problems with the set-up, or with conducting several test scans.
McAfee VirusScan 2006 is, for the most part, the same program as the previous version. The changes that were made back in version 8, which include the reduced number of settings to adjust, the reduced number of levels to navigate through, and the "virus map" feature, have been left relatively untouched. One welcomed improvement is the addition of a PUPs, or potentially unwanted programs, tab (you can find this by clicking on "Configure VirusScan Options" and then the "Advanced" tab). VirusScan will now notify you when it comes across a program it thinks might be unwanted. You can then tell VirusScan to remove the program or to add it to your trusted PUPs list, which you can manage.
This new version of VirusScan also comes with one major "update" change. Starting with VirusScan 2006, McAfee is now making DAT updates available nearly every day, instead of once a week or so as they have done in previous versions. Configuring VirusScan to install updates automatically will help to ensure that you have the most up-to-date virus fighting capability on your computer. For those with cable or broadband Internet connections, these updates are quick and should not interfere with any other surfing or downloading you are doing. If you have a dial-up connection, the update process will slow you down a little bit.
One update issue that first showed up back in version 8 and is still present in version 10 is when you choose to manually update. When you do this, and an update is available, VirusScan takes you to a McAfee page where you are suppose to log-in to continue. The problem is that the McAfee Website is notorious about refusing to log you out, even when you manually click the "log out" button on the site. So when VirusScan takes you to this page, and McAfee thinks you are already logged in, the page will tell you that you are already logged in but will not give you the ability to continue the update process. This happens to me about 80% of the time I try to manually update. For this reason, it's best that you allow VirusScan to automatically update itself if possible.Personal Firewall Plus 2006 version 7.0:
McAfee's Personal Firewall Plus version 5.0 was almost unilaterally panned by everyone who reviewed it. In 2005, version 6.0 was released. Most reviewers, including myself, seemed to have no problems with it. And so far I have not had any problems with version 7.0.
In May 2004, I finally moved out of the dark ages and moved from a dial-up connection to DSL. On the advice of a friend, I purchased a firewall program for the first time ever. Because I already used McAfee VirusScan (yes, I'm a glutton for punishment), I chose to buy Personal Firewall Plus version 5.0.
Unlike many of the reviews I read, I did not have any system problems as a result of installing or uninstalling version 5.0. Nor did I have any problems as a result of installing or uninstalling version 6.0. And so far, version 7.0 has not given me any problems either. The interface is very easy to use, the settings give me just enough adjustability to do what I need to do, and I have never had a problem with the program starting itself when I boot-up my computer. In addition, I have not had any problems using Microsoft's Internet Explorer. My browsing times have not slowed down and the only "This page cannot be displayed" messages I get are the same ones my friends, who do not use Firewall Plus, get.
For someone like me, who is completely port illiterate, McAfee Personal Firewall Plus has done exactly what it is suppose to do: block the bad stuff from reaching my computer.
If I was rating the virus scanner and firewall only, I would give them a 5-star rating since I have never had a problem with the programs themselves.
Ah, but this is McAfee we are talking about. And when you buy a McAfee product, you also end up buying the stupidity of McAfee. There are two reasons why this McAfee VirusScan/Firewall bundle only gets a 3-star rating from me:
REASON 1: McAfee's customer service is one of the worst in any industry. Their live instant messaging help is a joke. The people who run this don't listen to your problem at all. They are only trained to have you run through a series of steps. Ask any current or previous McAfee customer about McAfee's customer service, and you are likely to send that person into a fit of hysterics followed by an hour-long commentary on just how awful their experience was. The last time I called McAfee customer service to fix a problem, their instructions screwed up my computer so badly that I had to reformat my hard drive and reinstall everything. And once I did that, I then had to pay to talk to someone to fix the problem that I was having with their product. It took them 3 weeks, and five different phone calls to speak to five different people before I got the answer I needed.
REASON 2: SecurityCenter. This program wraps all of McAfee's products together for easy access on your computer's taskbar. It has also been the source of many a McAfee user's ire. The good news is that there has finally been some improvement with SecurityCenter. It used to be that when you started your computer, the McAfee SecurityCenter splash screen would tell you which McAfee security products you had purchased and which ones you had not. Many people did not like paying for a McAfee product only to have nothing more than a pop-up advertisement show up on their screen. During version 9, one of the updates sent out by McAfee changed the SecurityCenter splash screen so that you only saw what McAfee products were installed on your computer. VirusScan 2006 goes one step further and actually allows you to disable the splash screen. Unfortunately, if you open SecurityCenter it will still list the McAfee items you have not purchased and, as usual, cannot tell when other programs that do the same things as those McAfee programs have been installed on your computer. Most people will never have to open SecurityCenter since all of the programs can be opened by right clicking on the McAfee icon in the taskbar and selecting the program you need.
Bottom line: If you are having problems with the previous versions, go ahead and buy these new versions, especially if your VirusScan update subscription is about to expire. If you look hard enough, you should be able to find this combination product with a big enough rebate to make purchasing it cheaper than buying another year worth of virus updates.

Vipre AntiVirus + AntiSpyware Review

(More customer reviews)When I first installed Vipre, I was very impressed. It installed smoothly and ran with low memory. It did an excellent job with automatic updates and scans.
About a week after I installed it, Vipre prompted me that it had found a deep threat virus and needed me to reboot in order to completely clean the computer. I followed the instructions and could not get the system to reboot. I kept getitng the "blue screen of death."
I went through several diaganostics, bios checks, etc. Bottom line was that I could access the hard drive and it's files (and was able to rescue them), but I could not get it to boot to Windows. Even when I reordered the BIOS to boot from the CD ROM (to use the Windows XP Install disk), it gave me a "Windows cannot locate a hard drive."
I called Vipre (Sunbelt) and spoke with a very nice technician who told me that this is a "known problem" and that Vipre sometimes attacks a system file that is valid but acting in an abnormal way. He sent me some file links that would/should help in getting the hard drive and CPU to communicate.
I then spoke with the Geek Squad (since I couldn't even get on email at that point) and had several diagnostics run. Bottom line - I had to replace the hard drive.
I have since spoke with Sunbelt and the same technician who originally helped me. He was very nice, but explained that they do not reimburse for damage caused by their software. This did not make me happy as I have now spent $300 to replace the hard drive, not to mention the time wasted on a large consulting project I was working on as it took about a week to get it all worked out.
8/3/09 - EDITED REVIEW: I have spoken with the CEO of Sunbelt and they have fully reimbursed the cost of the repairs and have commented, both here and to me directly, that the problem that I encountered has been fixed in the current release of the software.
I am SUPER impressed with this company and, with their excellent customer service, have revised my review. It really is an excellent product and this company truly stands behind their products.

McAfee AntiVirus Plus 1User 2010 Review

(More customer reviews)I tend to go back and forth between security products from time to time...like many, I have multiple computers, and somehow I think it's safer to use a mix of security products rather than standardize on the same product everywhere. I haven't used McAfee for a few years, but I decided to give it a try this time as it came preinstalled on my new laptop.
Compared to Norton and most of the others, the basic features are very similar. The product detects and removes viruses (more than 200,000 types, according to the vendor) and spyware, while also including anti-phishing and identity theft protection. One unique feature of McAfee is that it periodically makes copies of key system configuration files, enabling you to restore your system to a known good status should something bad happen. Another unique feature I liked was that the product evaluates the security of web links as they are displayed, highlighting suspicious links before you're tempted to follow them.
I also found the administration and policies more useful than the competing products - very much appreciated. It can be a little complex at first, but if you like to have fine-grained control of security policy, this is the best product I've seen.
I personally found a few of the features less useful, for instance, home network security. I tend to secure my system at my router (which acts as a firewall), and I generally leave the network inside my home relatively open. McAfee's home network protection didn't impress me as adding anything worthwhile to this mix.
The product installs easily on my Windows Vista system and I was up and running in under ten minutes.
Compared to the Norton (Symantec) product (which I run on another computer), McAfee seems slower overall, but less "spikey". The Norton product tends to be faster overall, but when it does something resource-intensive (like download signatures), it tends to be more noticeable. McAfee is sort of the opposite - it's slower generally, but performance seems more even and consistent. Still, the only time I'd say it was objectionable were times when I'd have a huge amount of incoming email, especially email with lots of attachments. These conditions slow down my PC, and a quick visit to Windows Task Manager reveals McAfee as the culprit.
Still, overall this is a fine product that's stable and capable of providing top quality security protection.

Trend Micro Internet Security Pro Review

(More customer reviews)I have been using Trend Micro Internet Security for the past couple of years, and it's a good product. My license was up so I decided to upgrade to their Internet Security Pro program, which came out in September 2008. It has extra bells and whistles that improve your computer performance (much like Pitstop's PC Optimize or Norton 360) in addition to internet security and anti-virus protection.
The problem came in the installation. Because it wasn't just a simple 'add another year' to the existing license, but moving from one product to another product, the program simply wouldn't install. It hung up regularly during the install process and then automatically de-installed itself and shut down the computer. Frustrating!
I checked on multiple websites looking for a solution and tried all the ones I found. I talked twice to Trend Micro support people, and tried what they recommended and their suggestions didn't work either. Here's the list of suggestions received and tried that failed:
1. Running the Trend Micro Uninstall program (the "red-and-white lifesaver" icon) to de-install all previous versions of Trend Micro products that might be on my computer, one after another, and then rebooting the computer and trying to reinstall the program.

2. Uninstalling the program using CCLEANER or the UNINSTALL program in Windows XP Control Panel and then rebooting the computer and trying to reinstall the program.

3. Turning off the Windows Firewall and then rebooting and trying to reinstall the program.
What did finally work was to install the program using the CUSTOM INSTALL instead of the AUTOMATIC INSTALL program.
The idea came to me from watching where the program hung up when it was installing. It stalled and then uninstalled itself always at the same point in time: after the first round of the install procedure, when the console opens up with the six or seven red dots in a row, and then it installs each of the components. I realized it was hanging up always at the same point - installation of the Firewall.
So what I did was a CUSTOM install, where I UNCHECKED "install the Firewall". The whole program then loaded without a hitch - including the Firewall! I then updated the software and am "back in business".
I am posting this here because I did NOT find this method on line nor did the tech folks at Trend Micro suggest it - but it works.

PC Tools Internet Security 2009 V6 Review

(More customer reviews)I'm kind of a personal computer security freak. It seems I've tried everything out there at least once: Norton/Symantec, McAfee, Trend Micro, Zone Alarm, Avast, Kaspersky, etc. I'll compare this product to the ones I have come across.
In terms of user friendliness, I give this product a 4.5/5. It's visually oriented, without any complex menus and submenus to deal with. Reminds me of Norton and McAfee in terms of the ability to quickly access what you need to get done with the program.
When it comes to your machine, handling this program, it's a 4/5. It's definitely not as lightweight as McAfee, Trend Micro, or Avast, but it's way easier on your memory and hard drive than the infamous destructive force "I need a new computer b/c my anti-virus program destroyed it" Norton or the "I'm afraid of my next door neighbor hacking into my computer" Kaspersky users.
In terms of personal security, this program is really the works: antivirus, firewall, spam, spyware. I give it 3.5/5. It has a wide variety of things it monitors, but as often is the case with such products, the more you spread out your resources, the fewer bugs you catch. In terms of variety of options, yet lack of a sophisticated and comprehensive database of bugs, this reminds me of McAfee, Avast, Trend Micro, Zone Alarm.
So, to finish off, see where you fit in:
If you are regular computer user, who doesn't go to "iffy" web site, doesn't download things from "iffy" sources, this is really an excellent program for you, especially for the money. If you don't like this program for some reason, I'd recommend Trend-Micro, Avast (which is free but not nearly as comprehensive), or McAfee.
If you are constantly under threat from viruses/worms/hackers/spyware and want an extremely powerful and comprehensive program designed by a certified genius that will basically allow you to control every 1 and 0 that comes into your computer, you have the time to set it up and maintain properly, and you have an extremely powerful computer that can handle it, get the Kaspersky Security Suite.
I wouldn't recommend Norton to even my worst enemy. Because it's the most popular program worldwide, virus makers and hackers love to target it with all sorts of new things, basically shutting down the program before it can even protect you (great, huh?). And not to mention, that this program buries into your hard-drive so far down, that not even a professional can't salvage your computer from the damage (i.e. slowing your computer down), Norton causes after you uninstall it. (More customer reviews)This software is a complete rip off (DON'T BUY IT). I bought December, 2009 with two year updates and it seemed to work ok. March 12, 2010 it refused to update after requesting updates. Even after having gone in advanced and clicked the box to make it update automatically, clicked apply and then clicked "ok". I did this several times and once I left the screen I would receive a message, each time, saying "automatic update not available" even though this ability is clearly advertised on the box and within the software. What good is virus protection, etc. if it can not update?
The software is worthless and did not work well with anything about my computer (I bought in 2008) and I'm fairly knowledgeable of computers and software.
I contacted the company and received no response (this indicates to me they already know their software is worthless). Knowing my computer needed protection I immediately bought another virus protection software which works great and lives up to my expectations.
This is too expensive a lesson to learn (don't give your hard earned money away). Even if you look at Defender Pro you are wasting your time and I simply can't warn you enough about not purchasing.

(More customer reviews)I've used McAfee for years, and I prefer it over several other products I've used. But you need to understand that, while McAfee is very end-user friendly, MCAFEE DOES NOT STOP EVERYTHING. In fact, as one reviewer said, there ARE indeed better products out there. But I find them difficult to use. I just set up my firewall and system so that nothing gets downloaded without my express okay, and then I save everything and virus scan before opening. Additionally, it's my observation that McAfee is not that great at detecting and removing spyware and adware. Thus, I use two other freeware programs and I scan with all three. Spybot and Adaware both frequently catch things that the other two programs I use do not.
I haven't had to use McAfee customer service except to deal with an auto renewal issue with McAfee last summer, and let me tell you, the fellow who had bad things to say about customer service wasn't kidding about how difficult it is to find assistance and actually get it. Customer service calls are enough to send you postal!
UPDATE 1/12/2010: I just had to call McAfee customer service and this occasion it was easy, pleasant, and my problem was immediately resolved. So perhaps the various negative comments have been heard.

I declined the offer. I used Windows XP to restore my computer to the state that it had been the day before the infection. It took me about 15 minutes and removed the spyware completely.

No wonder the price of McAfee has come down so dramatically this year. They have a new unseen and unexpected revenue source. (More customer reviews)Sure it works, but McAfee doesn't understand that McAfee is not exempt from the rules that its software enforces. They say they block pop-ups and adware. What they don't say is that they block all pop-ups EXCEPT POP-UPS THAT THIS PROGRAM GIVES YOU, ADVERTISING McAFEE PRODUCTS AND SERVICES!
If you install this, you will get:
1) Incessant pop-ups on your computer desktop asking you if you want to buy additional products or subscriptions from McAfee. Conveniently, McAfee Total Protection can't stop these pop-ups -- and McAfee support staff don't seem to understand why this is a problem. These McAfee pop-ups appear on your desktop and not in your browser, so any browser settings do not prevent them appearing. (The current round of ads is urging me to renew my anti-virus subscription, even though my current subscription doesn't expire for another 8 months.)
2) An entry called "McAfee" in the top-most level of your Start menu that you cannot move or remove. If you try, it will reappear within hours. Nice bit of advertising real estate, that, for it to say "McAfee" in the top level of your Start menu.
3) A desktop "McAfee" icon that reappears if you remove it. (There is a way to stop this particular annoyance, but you have to dig through the McAfee website for instructions, and following them requires you to tinker with your registry.)If you write to McAfee and tell them that their ads are not welcome on your computer, you may eventually get the following response as I did from one of their brilliant tech support people:
"It is really unfortunate that your computer got infected by virus when McAfee was installed. I suggest you to try some of the ?Free Virus Removal Solutions? before contacting our technician through paid service. Please visit the below link which will provide detailed information about our Virus Removal Services." In other words, install McAfee, get McAfee ads, complain to McAfee, get an offer from McAfee to sell you a service to remove the "virus" that "your computer got ... when McAfee was installed."So good software, EVIL COMPANY. Buy something else, as I will certainly be doing. Even if this one's free after rebate, it's still coming to you at a price.ADDENDUM: After suffering through McAfee's advertisements for so long, I finally gave up on them fixing the problem and uninstalled McAfee in favor of NORTON INTERNET SECURITY 2011 (Amazon link: Norton Internet Security 2011 - 1 User/3 Pc). This was an excellent move. Not only does Norton not misbehave with its own advertisements (it even has an explicit setting to turn off "Special Offer Notification") and icon litter, but it has a much more-intuitive interface, it seems smarter in figuring out what the user needs without having to ask, and it even caught a trojan-infected file on its first scan that had been on my hard drive through 4 years of supposed McAfee protection. Trend Micro Titanium Internet Security 2011 - 3 User Review

I have used Trend for many years. It seemed like they finally got it right with 2009. It was quick, reliable, and had lots of options. After that subscription expired I got a notice to download this new "Titanium" thing (billed automatically by Digital River - that won't happen again!).
I downloaded it and it installed okay, but there are practically no advanced settings. It is so dumbed-down. You cannot really fine tune the scanning any more, and there is no ability to control the home network the way you could with the previous version. About all you can do is set a few parental controls and very, very simple filtering.
It also seemed to slow down Firefox briefly. It's like Firefox would be unresponsive for the first ten seconds or so before it was usable. Not sure if it was due to the antivirus but the correlation was there - it started as soon as I installed the new version.
Despite my misgivings, I was about to bite the bullet and go ahead and upgrade the wife's computer. Before I did, though, I checked the subscription status and saw that IT WAS VALID FOR ANOTHER YEAR! Apparently, installing Titanium was optional, and the previous version was still eligible for regular updates! They did not TELL me that! So I just removed Titanium and rolled back into the other version, which installed flawlessly and now I am happy for another year.
I had some trouble uninstalling Titanium on my third computer. It took a couple of tries, and each time it would hang at 13%. I had to do a hard reset and then retry. For some reason, I suspected the password I had set up for Titanium was the issue, so I removed it and then the uninstall went to completion. That was a bit worrisome.
Anyway, sorry, I just cannot recommend this product. Maybe it's okay and really does work but I do not like the lack of advanced control. For basic users it may be just fine. But for me, I am going to ride the current version out to whatever its end-of-life is, then unless Trend gives us some better control over the behavior, I will look for something else.

It's now six months into the legacy version of Trend, and I have having to think about what to move to next. I have evaluated ESET, Vipre, BitDefender, and Kapersky, and all of them leave me a bit underwhelmed. ESET seems the best of the bunch, though a tad expensive. Vipre is nice and light but has too many boxes asking me to accept this or that action (if you disable the accept box option, then you have to create a rule for everything that isn't just running a program). Bit Defender and Kapersky are just a bit too slow and bloated, and Kapersky's scan just dragged. So, at renewal time, I may just jump on the Titanium bandwagon. It's either that, ESET, or free MS Security Essentials.
I really do not think Titanium is "bad", it just did not give you much control. It really is a totally different program from what it was before, and is REALLY different from the rest. But I tried the latest evaluation version and the slowdown in FireFox seemed much less of an issue. So maybe I just need to readjust my expectations.

McAfee Internet Security 3User 2010 Review

(More customer reviews)With Bit Defender and Kaperski, McAfee rates in the top 3 on many internet security reviews (#2). Here are my 10 cents worth after using all 3 of the above. Bit Defender has an excellent firewall but during a full scan, it tends to slow down the computer quite a bit. Of the 3, Kaperski has the fastest scan. Both Mc and Ski have very good firewall. But only Mc's firewall was certified by ICSA labs in 2009. Of the 3, I found Mc's Antivirus to be superior to the other 2 ( a solid A minus - B+ for the others). It was particularly well suited in detecting malicious items from foreign websites. The user interface in Mc's was more friendly than the other 2. Although ski's is only slightly just a notch behind. Mc's uses simple to understand traffic lights. Red: warning do not click into the website. Yellow: use caution. Green: OK! What could be more simple. In terms of price Mc's is stuck between the two.
Therefore here is the verdict: Bit defender - Excellent Firewall and above average AntiVirus. Slow scan and excellent price. Kaperski: very good firewall and Antivirus. Fastest Scan. It does everything very well, but does not excel in one particular area. Downside: a little pricey. Reviewer's choice: McAfee. A very good firewall and excellent Antivirus. Scan speed C+. Full of features and user friendly (a 7 year old could understand their color code). McAfee has set the standard for your complete computer protection. It's a no brainer.

I used this software for about a month because i needed a new anti-virus and firewall.I figured since i was running the Spy Sweeper anyway(which is a good program)the rest of Webroots products must just be as good.Boy was i wrong!! As soon as i installed it,i had nothing but problems with it.Wouldnt update itself and would freeze my computer up all the time.Plus i couldnt connect to the internet!Heck the software would even freeze itself up.I contacted Webroot and they did respond.I had to completely uninstall the Firewall that came with the software and download some other version Firewall they sent me.This worked for about 3 days and then it was back to freezing up again and no connecting.I was very disappointed considering the Spy Sweeper itself is a decent program.I wrote back to Webroot wanting a refund but i got no response after that(figures).If you want to keep your pc running correctly,stay the heck away from this software!!! You can buy the Spy Sweeper separately (without anti-virus) which works pretty good but stay the heck away from their firewall and 2nd rate anti-virus program!!Do you see the guy on the front of the box thats smiling?Well he's smiling because he knows he just sold you some junk software and your not gonna get a refund!!

McAfee Antivirus Plus 2011 Review

(More customer reviews)I ordered this product from Amazon because it was on sale and we needed to have some sort of Antivirus software on our computer. Although our computer was running great, I wanted it protected. I read one review which stated that the product was pretty good. Since then, I see there are more reviews online. I typically don't rate products, but felt the need to share with everyone my experience. After installing McAfee, it has been one problem after another. Mcafee identified a "virus" which actually was a false positive. Everytime I log on it says to remove it and restart, after restart, the same message appears. After contacting McAfee about the problem, I was told I could pay $89.99 to have them remove viruses from the computer. What a coincidence. . . Interesting how the only way to fix it is for me to pay them money!
On top of all of that, Mcafee identified 'explore.exe' as a malicious file and removed it. Well 'explore.exe' is necessary for a computer to work. So without it, I now have no desktop icons and no start menu.
Bottom line, I thought I was getting a deal, instead I got a broken computer and will have to spend even more money to backup the hard drive and do an entire system install back to factory settings. Thanks a lot Mcafee.

Norton AntiVirus 2005 Review

(More customer reviews)I have used Norton (AntiVirus, Firewall, Systemworks Professional) for years without a problem; and I have not had to deal with viruses, breakins or stability problems. They all previously installed in minutes without a problem. I did Not upgrade my 2003 products last year but did renew my subscriptions. I'm using a P4 computer running WinXP, with 612 of RAM and 80 Gig HD. I do not consider myself beyond a computer newbie, so perhaps my experience is a function of inexperience. That said, I have reformatted hard drives, upgraded WinME to XP, flashed the BIOS, installed graphics cards, audio cards,upgraded to USB 2, regularly download and install new software, hardware, etc. all without incident (or only a brief glich).
I have NEVER experienced the BUGGY, UNSTABLE, system wide problems that I have been trying to deal with since attempting to install this product.
(1)..The first problem was that it successfully prevented my Norton 2003 Firewall from starting (i.e., it just freezes on refreshing and after about 10 minutes indicates that all firewall features are disabled (will not permit them to be enabled); knocks out registration, while acknowledging the registration is still current for a few more months).
(2)..It causes Norton SystemWorks 2003 to crash...indicating problems with Symantec Integrator, etc. so SystemWorks is also unusable.
(3).. Antivirus 2005 has yet to be sucessfully installed. As per the Symantec site, I've updated "Liveupdate", and tried to remove and reinstall the product.(I've tried both upgrade/download and full product CD, trying the typical install> restart>delete> restart...) Although it was activated at install, it crashed at the computer's restart. My experience is that once AntiVirus 2005 is installed it CANNOT BE COMPLETELY REMOVED, there are literally dozens of folders and files that remain (even working in Safe Mode with full Administrator priviledges, many of the left-overs cannot be deleted, moved or renamed, at least not without a lot of effort). A computer scan also revealed over 60 Activex\COM errors specifically relating to Norton/Symantec, missing Norton\Symantec files, etc. Unfortunately, these items seem to prevent reinstall, as Norton 2005 sees even a few of these as evidence that it is already installed and aborts the reinstall. There is no option to repair/modify. Some of the problem also seems to strongly suggests that Product Activation/Validation is at least a partial contributing factor.
(4)..It should be noted that thinking that the Norton 2003 Firewall and/or Systemworks might be contributing factors, and since Norton 2005 AntiVirus made them un-usable, I eventually removed them from the computer....and attempted to install Norton SystemWorks 2005.
(5)..To date, although I have been able to get SystemWorks 2005 to install (it refuses to install Antivirus 2005), the Symantec Integrator causes it crashe constantly. And finally had to laboriously, manually remove the various SystemWorks leftovers as well.
(6)..Being without a usable AntiVirus program or a functioning Firewall, I have spent the better part of the past week attempting to remedy these problems since I'm using a cable modem with a fiber optic connection. I have been offline for almost a week (thankfully I have a laptop that has not been touched by any Norton 2005 product).Currently it seems the only possible solution is to manually change/ remove files from the registry (Symantec does provide information on the dozens of registry entries that will need to be removed (at least from the previous version of AntiVirus),if one cannot delete Antivirus using Add/Remove Programs.
(7)..Did I mention that prior to any Norton 2005 product install attempts I could press the power button on my computer and be on a working desktop typically in less than a minute; after the first attempted install of AntiVirus 2005 the start time is now over 4 minutes. Checking some log files seems to reveal a lot of the computer's time directed to verifying product activation/ownership info.
(8)..ADDITIONALLY, AFTER INSTALL (and before restart) AntiVirus 2005 provides information relating to product activation stating: "Antivirus 2005 may cause system problems if new users are added after Antivirus 2005 is installed."
Frankly, it's begun to feel like I'm an unknowing beta tester for Norton's activation process and upgrades. It's a bit like buying an elegant new car with a history of stability, reliability, safety, that has previously offered ease of use for its owner. Except the manufacturer has upgraded the vehicle to a keyless system that now uses only the owner's fingerprint to open the door locks or start the ignition. Unfortunately, there's a glitch and one is left with a vehicle that cannot be opened and will not start. No matter how attractive, no matter the previous history of safety, reliability and stability one is forced to junk the vehicle, as even a less known vehicle that will let do what you need to is better than one that sits there occupying space.It is unfortunate that seemingly such can now be said of Norton...

(More customer reviews)Update: (12/13/09) I have a three install license. When I tried to install a second license on my laptop I received a message informing me I had no installs left. When I clicked on the "help" screen I was sent to a screen which implied I might be a pirate. When I eventually got the customer service screen I found I would have to PAY to have a phone conversation with a real person. UNACCEPTABLE!
I had to install a program which opened a dialog box to "on-line chat" with someone in a foreign country. This required me to allow a stranger to take control of my computer (do you really want that?) and prowl around. I had a difficult time communicating the problem. The CS rep kept insisting I had to uninstall my previous install on my desktop, even though I had TWO installs left. When I finally managed to make him understand, he erased all my settings in Internet Explorer. Even though the problem was finally solved, the whole process took almost 45 minutes, 35 of which were spent online. Also it took me several days to actually download the help client as I kept getting repeated messages indicated the McAfee server was unavailable. I was never clear what the problem was.
So why would anyone subject themselves to such misery? I can't imagine.

The summary: A good anti-virus program which works flawlessly with Win7, but may annoy you during the setup.
I waited over a month to write this review because I wanted to do a clean install of Windows 7 Professional on a new "home brew" computer before testing it. I have avoided McAfee products for years because of several bad experiences in McAfee's early iterations. So I wasn't sure what to expect, but I wanted to give it a fair test that was unencumbered by other potentially conflicting programs or native problems.
I chose "Custom Install" from the setup menu since I like to see what's being put on my computer. Obviously I chose to install "Virus Scan" but I declined "Personal Firewall" since its built been built into every Windows version since XP, SP2. I okayed "Site Advisor", but said no to "Easy Network" since I could find no information as to what this is. (The packaging card attributes the lack of included instructions to "an ongoing effort to minimize the impact on our environment" although a cynic might suspect more of a financial motive.) After this the program downloaded something called "Compatibility Checker" trickled down from a slow McAfee home site (six minutes to download.) Downloading the Win7 update added another three minutes and the total install time came in at just under 12 minutes, a bit long I think (I have RR turbo.)
Just like Microsoft, McAfee requires product activation, but unlike Microsoft or Adobe requires your first and last name, email address and password, which I find objectionable. Another annoyance is the box (checked by default) which may put you on more spam lists AKA McAfee "partners." Be sure to uncheck them unless you really want more email. Entering a password is more complicated than it should be. No password requirements are listed until you enter a password which is not long or complex enough and then you are informed it needs to be at least eight characters long with at least one letter and one number and no special characters. The only way to find a suitable password is through trial and error.
More objectionable to me is the attempt to get you to sign up for an automatically renewing subscription which charges your credit card one month before your year's initial subscription ends at the "existing price -- discounts and special pricing do not apply." Furthermore once you've turned on auto renewal via your computer you are not allowed to turn it off with your computer. To not be charged again you're required to call customer service. McAfee automatically gets your money even if you stop using your computer or someone steals it, unless you remember to call them. And even if you want to authorize payment years in advance, do you want to buy something without knowing the actual price? Why this helps anyone but McAfee is a mystery to me.
The plus to this program is it has, for five weeks at least, worked quickly and unobtrusively for me. It may be partly due to my new computer's inherent speed, but with most virus checkers I can usually feel it pulling down my system as it toils in the background. Not so with McAfee AntiVirus Plus 2010. I also found the "Site Advisor" feature to work seamlessly, although it takes up another precious line on a browser increasingly burdened by add-ons like Google Toolbar, etc. Also installed with Site Advisor is a searchbox which pushes you to Yahoo and also sets your browser's default search engine to Yahoo. You can turn this entire line off, but I found no way to set the site advisor search to another site, for instance Bing or Google.
For those who want a more complete program, McAfee will give you more bells and whistles at a higher price. But remember, those bells and whistles in the background eat up precious speed. I prefer a minimalist approach, especially since Win7 has a lot of built-in safeguards.
So yes, I give the program a solid but not completely enthusiastic recommendation once one gets past the annoyances I mentioned. (Has anyone ever actually flipped over an antiviirus program?) If I find any long-term issues, I'll post an update
