Panda Antivirus + Firewall 2008 3-User Review

Panda Antivirus + Firewall 2008 3-User
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I installed this programm on Vista Home Premium running PC. It slowed it so significantly. Before I had McAfee programm and it didn't have any problems with Vista. It (Panda) will make your fast computers into slow moving train. Waste of money.
Update:
Now two days ago when I finally tinkered with firewall (setting which allows certain programs and files to have inbound or outbound or both internet connections) program started to work normally and it doesn't slow my computer at all. It seems by default Panda is very restrictive in allowing your programs to have free internet browsing. There are also intel's remoting services files which don't liked to be blocked by Panda. In short, if something doesn't work when you install Panda try to check your's Panda firewall setting, if you won't firewall will make a wall in your computer.
Update, one more: Here is my letter to Panda customer support: After installing your programm on my Vista home premium PC, my computer started to perform very slowly. Prior to installing Panda I had McAfee antivirus software which didn't slow my system at all (I uninstalled it already). What is going on? Why your programm makes my computer so slow? Please, don't tell me its because Vista is bad programm. I know that Vista is bad but it worked wonderfull with McAfee software and it doesn't with your Panda. I really regret that I installed your programm at my computer. Is there any way to make it not slowing my system.
Here is Technical support answer: Hello,

The reason the computer is operating slowly is because there is most likely remnants of McAfee still on the system. You should run their removal utility to make sure that all remnants of McAfee are removed properly and so it does not conflict with Panda.
It appears that you may have remnant files from McAfee Security application on your system causing conflict for Panda during the installation. In order for you to remove the remnant files, please click on the following link to the view the instructions:
http://us.pandasecurity.com/techsupport/templates/mcafee.htm
Here is again my answer: Thank you for your help. I did remove all McAfee software. However it wasn't the reason Panda slowed my computer. It appeared that some default setting on Panda Firewall blocked lots of program's inbound and outbound internet connections on my computer. After a changed the setting letting outbound connection to some of my programs-computer started to work normally. I, as a customer, would advise you not to put such powerful defaults in your firewall since it may scare people of not buying your programm at all, since it literally brings computer to a stop and takes lots of macnine resources.
I hope this help someone to find solution to their panda problem

BitDefender Antivirus 2008 - 2 Year/3 Pc's Review

BitDefender Antivirus 2008 - 2 Year/3 Pc's
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I compared several major name and lesser know virus protectors prior to choosing to purchase this one. Those I settled purchasing were Kaspersky Anti-Virus and BidDefender Anti-virus. Both products performed better then anything I tested or evaluated from the big name companies and having worked in tech support; I am very careful about checking to be sure that my protection software does not prevent me from working. Historically, Norton and McAfee were system resource hogs.
In general, Kapspersky is a more elegant and somewhat superior product to BitDefender and they are known for pretty good tech support (considering the company is in in Russia). Kapspersky will run in the background so that you can use your computer and do a virus check at the same time and it is very aggressive - (If you purchase it or use the free trial I strongly recommend that you leave the install settings at the general user level - otherwise it will prompt you every time you do something - I accidently set mine to block MS Windows auto-update which resulted in a pop-up warning war on my machine). I chose to not purchase Kapspersky because it was highly expensive - even on Amazon compared to the other products.
Bit defender on the other hand was a quite good product (if a little bit more technical and slightly less aggressive - it will use more resources then Kapspersky and I can hear my drive clicking while I am writing this). They are not known for good or timely technical support - I think they are a reasonably small company out of Hungary and may have few English speakers on staff. It will slow your computer down during normal operation, but is a faster install and first-run full (deep) system scan then most of the competitors. The best part is the price (if you have more then one computer - you can get two years on three computers for 29.95 - list price 39.95(Kapspersky is $34.25 at Amazon - list price 59.95 for one computer for one year).
Do not expect technical support from Bitdefender, your experience will not be pleasant; this product is, after all, a virus protector - I personally do not want to be calling tech support, I want to be protected. Also, when you do the install, just do the standard or average person install; the directions for expert and advanced features are confusing and may even be misleading.
One major issue I noticed is that the software often tells you it is unlicensed even when it is. This appears to have no effect on the running or performance of the product, the auto updates, or the protection of your system - everything runs just fine and the product is licensed and operating - this was likely to have resulted from a minor programming error at the company that somehow got into the production version of the software. If you just ignore the bitdefender icon showing that the software is not working, it will run and protect you just fine.
Do NOT install any virus checker on a computer until you have made sure every other virus checker has been removed and uninstalled; for windows Vista users this may include disabling Windows Defender - they "fight" with each other and eat your system's resources.
Lastly: I am not recommending this product for Windows Vista Users, there seems to be an issue with Windows Defender and some virus protection suites.

SUPERAntispyware often plays second fiddle to Malwarebytes Antimalware in the malware removal community. In my personal experience working on computers, I find that SUPERAntispyware is aggressive enough to stand on it's own two feet in the realm of removing some of the nastiest stuff out there. The lifetime license is really just the icing on the cake. I personally would opt to turn off the real time protection as it's not as effective detecting malware before it installs but rather removing it once installed. Keeping on the automatic updates and scheduled scanning should be enough to keep your computer clean from some of the serious nasties out there. Make sure to couple this with your existing Anti virus software for optimal protection.

McAfee Total Protection 2009 3-User Review

McAfee Total Protection 2009 3-User
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When computer users were searching for a term to apply to computer programs that came loaded with viruses, harmful DRM (Digital Rights Management) or other insidious ways of slowing down the user's computer, they eventually settled on "Malware."
Its time to coin a new term for programs like McAfee Total Protection. My complaints against the program are only partially related to its ability to filter out viruses and keep a computer free of junk.
The real issue with this program, and many, many others is that it will constantly steal the users focus by popping up text boxes from the Taskbar in Windows. These can come at ANY time the computer is on. They alert the user to the fact that "McAfee has installed updates," or "It is time to restart the computer" to the neverendingly frustrating "Your subscription is about to expire." These boxes can and will pop up while immersed in a full screen computer game, at times causing it to crash. They will pop up when you are working on editing digital photos, or watching a movie, or anything else that requires your full attention.
The term "nagware," came to mind, and maybe it will stick. Feel free to put your suggestions in the comments section of this review.
I understand why they do this. It is intended for novice computer owners who need to be reminded of all of these things, and who don't consider having their 'focus' (the primary task the computer user is working on. For example, as I write this review, it is my primary focus) stolen as EXTREMELY frustrating. That wouldn't even be a big deal, except that McAfee in their infinite wisdom has provided no remedy for the power user. We cannot turn off these irritating messages. They come regardless of my desire to see them or not.
They are amazingly irritating, especially if they disrupt something immersive, like a computer game or movie. Imagine: you are watching your new blue-ray of "The Dark Knight," and just as Batman is about to dispense with the Joker, a text box pops up with the message "McAfee has finished installing updates" in a gray box in the corner of the screen. Unacceptable in the first place, and even more so because you CANNOT TURN THIS FEATURE OFF! This gets unbearable when your subscription is a few months from expiring, and alerts informing you of that pop up literally every time you use the computer. Also, they don't just leave after they pop up, the user is required to click 'ok.' You cannot permanently disable these messages.
As a virus scanner, McAfee works relatively well. It will scan your system for viruses, and if your definitions are up-to-date, find them some of the time. However, it is pretty strange that after making virus software for so many years, they still cannot provide a reasonably well working Spyware hunter that is anywhere near as good as the free version of "Ad-Aware" offered by Lavasoft, or the retail version of "Spybot Search and Destroy."
Another major complaint is the sheer size of the system resource footprint that McAfee total protection takes up. If you have an older computer, less than 2gb of ram (4gb with Vista), this program will create a very noticeable slowdown in your computer's performance. Comparing to how it runs on my wife's laptop with 4gb of ram vs. some of the computers at my work with only 1.5gb, the older work computers are drastically slowed down by McAfee, while my wife's laptop with its 4gb of ram is not really affected. (I do not use this program on my computer for the reasons that I've laid out above).
In concussion, if you don't care about 1. Annoying pop ups that steal your focus and cannot be disabled, 2. Very limited spyware removal and 3. Slow and poorly written code that uses a large portion of system resources, you MIGHT consider buying this software.
*****UPDATE 09-15-2009*****
Still have this program installed on my wife's laptop, and it's still popping up annoying and useless advertisements despite the fact that I've turned off all notifications in the options tab--you can see the most recent one that I took a screen shot of in the 'customer images' section of this Amazon page. When the license runs out in a few months I will be uninstalling this program and replacing it with AVAST home edition which is free. I can't recommend this program to anyone. Save yourself the money and get a free alternative like AVAST or AVG.
*****UPDATE 01-01-2010*****
Microsoft has recently released their excellent MICROSOFT SECURITY ESSENTIALS for fee. It also recently won an award for being the best anti-virus program out there. Bests of all it's FREE to anyone with a valid copy of Windows (XP through Windows 7). I've been using it for a few months now and let me tell you, it's just about the best anti-virus I've encountered. Searches are wicked fast, the interface is slick, and best of all it has a tiny memory footprint! Updates are free FOREVER. Did I mention the program itself is completely free? Just Google search MICROSOFT SECURITY ESSENTIALS, download, install, and you're good to go.

Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0 3-user Review

Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0 3-user
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Intro: Over the years, I've had several computer security programs... going way back, I started with Mcafee because it was pre-loaded on a computer I bought, but I found it to be too intrusive and too "buggy".... then I went to Norton which I had for several years. Again, bugs abounded and the software really slowed my computer down. After that, I moved to Trend Micro's Internet Security software because I had heard it used less system resources and therefore the computer would run faster. I didn't find this to be true. Trend Micro was OK, but I kept reading stellar reviews of Kaspersky and decided to give it a try when my subscription lapsed.
This is a good suite of software, not perfect, but very good. It installed pretty easily, though during installation the computer rebooted unexpectedly, but no harm seemed to be done. After it completed its initial scans (which did take quite a while), it doesn't seem as intrusive scanning as other programs. It only scans new or changed files, so my computer doesn't seem to be scanning all the time. It also found a couple of Trojan horses that Trend had not discovered.
It comes with "parental control" turned on, which I didn't realize, and it was blocking access to fairly innocuous pages (such as "Excite", which has a provocative name but is anything but Exciting). I turned off the parental control and I again have access.
This software seems to have the smallest footprint of any security software I've used... it doesn't hog system resources, and unlike my old software, I can actually USE the computer while it is scanning.
Kaspersky isn't perfect, but it's the best I've had so far...I'd recommend it.
Pro's:
* Does not drain system resources or significantly decrease response time
* Easy to use
* Very thorough - finds viruses etc that other packages do not
* Good price, especially after the rebates frequently offered!
Con's:
* No telephone support - all support is via "live chat" that never responds. Email support is a 48-72 hour turnaround. Not ideal. But not many of these software firms have telephone support these days; Trend Micro is an exception I believe.
That's the only con I could come up with! And I was trying for at least 2-3.... overall I'm very happy with Kaspersky.
UPDATE ON 9/12: I may have posted the above prematurely. In the past day or two, I have had significant issues with Kaspersky blocking my local network. I cannot print on my local network, nor can the computers "see" each other. Scanning the online help forums, it seems that the firewall function is a bit "buggy" on this new 7.0 release. There are many topics regarding it and several "help" files in the Kaspersky Knowledge Base. I'll update this once I get more info - but for now if you're on a home network, you might want to wait for a few updates to the firewall part of this software.
Update 9/20: I've gotten all of my problems fixed (well, those related to Kaspersky at least...) I think most of the issues were caused by uninstalling Trend Micro instead of installing Kaspersky. The people on the Kaspersky user forum were very helpful and I'm up and running. I'll continue to recommend this security suite!

After reading the review of this product in PC WORLD just the other day, I went ahead and ordered the program. The review was right on, this program found 11 spyware files and one Trojan Horse file in my home computer. Interesting, because I run Ad-Aware and Spybot as my anti-spyware programs daily......and these two didn't find what Counterspy found! I'm sold. Though my other programs are "free", I gladly will spend the $19 bucks or so for this program for my other machines now. No, I don't work for the PC World folks; nor the Counterspy folks; nor Amazon or any computer outfit....Am retired, and have fun building computers for fun and family!

Norton AntiVirus 2003 Review

Norton AntiVirus 2003
Average Reviews:

Norton Antivirus 2003 is full of bugs. Unless you want a bunch of headaches stick with the proven version 2002. Norton Antivirus is still a much better product than McAfees (I experienced problems with them from the beginning, but never had problems with Norton 2001 or 2002.) Their rush to get a new product out by the new year has them releasing a poor product...perhaps they should simply name the product version6.whatever instead of by the year so they don't have to rush something that is clearly not ready to be placed out on the market yet!

Diskeeper 9.0 Professional - Single User Review

Diskeeper 9.0 Professional - Single User
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an excellent piece of software, and I recommend it for everyone. This tool is as valuable to me as Lavasoft's Ad-Aware.
I'm a computer professional and as soon as most people find out, their first response is, "Oh my god you need to look at my computer it's SO SLOW. You need to look at it." My typical regiment is:
1) Download, Install, and Run Lavasoft's Ad-Aware
2) Scan for viruses using McAfee's free online scan (Always up-to-date, despite what may be installed)
3) Run through the registry's run and startup folder to stop unnecessary programs from starting on load
4) Download, Install, Schedule, and Run Diskeeper.
People are amazed at how much faster thier computer runs. In fact, after a fresh install I also run Diskeeper just to squeeze every drop of performance out of the PC as possible.
Two important things to note:
- Why is defragmenting important?
- Why not use the built-in defragmenter?
Answers:
Let's say you're writing a document in MS Word. You save the document and close it. Then you begin to write another word document. When you save the second document to disk, windows will likely put the new file immediately after the old file. Well, what happens when you add new stuff to the first file if the second file took up the space the first file had left immediately after it? Well it saves the new changes in the space AFTER the second file, hence creating a fragmented file.
A fragmented file is a file the is not contiguous, and has segments in different physical locations on the hard disk. Picture a fragmented file as a file with other files inside of it, breaking it apart.
If you research hard disk statistics, you'll see 2 common factors in rating hard disk performance: Seek time and transfer speed. Transfer speed is the MAXIMUM speed in which your hard disk can transfer the information over a wire from the disk itself to the computer, after the data is located. Seek time is the average amount of time it takes for the hard drive to locate the file on the disk, when it's not already reading it.
Picture a record player. You place the needle on the song you want to play. As long as you leave the needle in place, the music will play. If you want to change the song, however, you need to life the needle and place it at the location of the new song. When you replace the needle, the music continues. Hard drives are very similar.
If the hard drive is reading a file, it is transferring that file over the wire as quickly as it can read it. If that file is fragmented, however, it needs to "Seek" the location where the file continues. A lot of people will know this as a "Clicking" sound the hard drive makes.
If the computer is trying to read multiple files at once (as most computers do, ESPECIALLY when booting up), and those files are fragmented, the drive is doing a LOT of seeking and less actual data transfer. This is often referred to as "Thrashing" by IT guys, or "Grinding" by others. You'll notice this if your hard drive is doing a lot of work, but your computer is acting very sluggish, making what would be a fast computer very slow. This is because your hard drive is spending more time looking for the data (Seeking) then actually reading the data (transferring), and sending it to your computer.
The hard drive is usually the performance bottleneck for most personal computers. Diskeeper greatly increases your performance by allowing your hard drive to read the files as quickly as possible, making the slowest part of your computer much faster.
Lastly, the built-in defragmenter is slow and "Clunky." It takes a great deal of time to defragment, and doesn't optimize the drive as well to prevent further defragmentation. Moreover, you have to trigger the deframenting manually, and then you can't use your computer for hours. No one ever really does that...BOTTOM LINE:
Want your computer to run like new every day?
Install Ad-Aware
Install an Anti-Virus
Install Diskeeper
Run your computer like a PRO.

Advanced "Set It and Forget It” functionalityNo matter how powerful your PC is, fragmentation will slow it down. It's just a matter of time. In fact, the harder your system works, the faster it builds fragmentation. Manual, single-pass defragmenters simply can't keep up—in order to maintain performance, you'd likely spend more time defragmenting than you did using the computer! Why bother with a time-consuming manual process, when Diskeeper 9 Professional Edition simply makes the problems of fragmentation go away forever?Diskeeper 9 Professional Edition allows custom configuration tailored to the way you use your system. Fine-tune Diskeeper to your likings or select the default options then "Set It and Forget It”, and you'll never need to worry about fragmentation again!

Vipre AntiVirus + AntiSpyware Review

Vipre AntiVirus + AntiSpyware
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I first installed Vipre, I was very impressed. It installed smoothly and ran with low memory. It did an excellent job with automatic updates and scans.
About a week after I installed it, Vipre prompted me that it had found a deep threat virus and needed me to reboot in order to completely clean the computer. I followed the instructions and could not get the system to reboot. I kept getitng the "blue screen of death."
I went through several diaganostics, bios checks, etc. Bottom line was that I could access the hard drive and it's files (and was able to rescue them), but I could not get it to boot to Windows. Even when I reordered the BIOS to boot from the CD ROM (to use the Windows XP Install disk), it gave me a "Windows cannot locate a hard drive."
I called Vipre (Sunbelt) and spoke with a very nice technician who told me that this is a "known problem" and that Vipre sometimes attacks a system file that is valid but acting in an abnormal way. He sent me some file links that would/should help in getting the hard drive and CPU to communicate.
I then spoke with the Geek Squad (since I couldn't even get on email at that point) and had several diagnostics run. Bottom line - I had to replace the hard drive.
I have since spoke with Sunbelt and the same technician who originally helped me. He was very nice, but explained that they do not reimburse for damage caused by their software. This did not make me happy as I have now spent $300 to replace the hard drive, not to mention the time wasted on a large consulting project I was working on as it took about a week to get it all worked out.
8/3/09 - EDITED REVIEW: I have spoken with the CEO of Sunbelt and they have fully reimbursed the cost of the repairs and have commented, both here and to me directly, that the problem that I encountered has been fixed in the current release of the software.
I am SUPER impressed with this company and, with their excellent customer service, have revised my review. It really is an excellent product and this company truly stands behind their products.

VIPRE Antivirus runs seamlessly without significantly impairing system performance and is designed for an unobtrusive user experience, keeping notification pop-ups and warnings to a minimum.
All-new technology delivers a unique antivirus and antispyware engine At VIPRE's core is an antivirus and antispyware engine that merges the detection of all types of malware into a single efficient and powerful system. The new technology was developed exclusively by Sunbelt, without building on older generation antivirus engines. VIPRE uses next-generation technologies making it the future of antivirus programs!
Advanced anti-rootkit technology VIPRE's all-new anti-rootkit technology finds and disables malicious hidden processes, threats, modules, services, files, Alternate Data Streams (ADS), or registry keys on a user's system.
VIPRE is Checkmark Anti-Virus Desktop certified by West Coast Labs and will receive additional certifications through other certifying bodies in the coming months.
Removing rootkits is supplemented by VIPRE's FirstScan which runs at the system's boot time. FirstScan bypasses the Windows operating system, to directly scan certain locations of the hard drive for malware, removing infections where found.
Real-time monitoring with Active Protection VIPRE's Active Protection delivers real time monitoring and protection against known and unknown malware threats. Active Protection works inside the Windows kernel (the core of the operating system), watching for malware and stopping it before it has a chance to execute on a user's system.
Active Protection incorporates three methods to protect the user:
Signature matching, comparing a file for an exact match against VIPRE's definition database
Heuristic analysis, which looks at the internal characteristics of a file to determine the likelihood that it is malware;
Behavioral analysis, observing the actual actions of a program to determine if it is possibly malware.

Full protection against email-borne threats VIPRE Antivirus includes comprehensive protection against email viruses, with direct support for Outlook, Outlook Express and Windows Mail; and support for any email program that uses POP3 and SMTP (Thunderbird, IncrediMail, Eudora, etc.).
Why VIPRE? It's fast and light on system resources, with everything you need and nothing you don't! VIPRE is designed to be a high-performance product, without compromising on detection and cleaning of viruses, trojans, worms, and spyware.
With VIPRE you get:
High-performance technology that won't slow down your PC.
An easy-to-use interface that gets you up and running in a matter of minutes.
Low memory usage and more efficient scanning intelligence than other products on the market today.
Unlimited "home site license" for all the PCs in your home.

Our company tested Panda Global Protection 2009 as part of a series of tests of various security suites. The program installs with little difficulty, and is very easy to use. After we installed Panda on out Pentium IV 2GHz test system, about a dozen programs run in the background protecting your computer.
All features of Panda are available when not logged into Windows XP/2000 as an Administrator. You can choose which features of Panda require a supervisor password, nice for a corporate environment. The labels for the controls are somewhat cryptic. "Self-diagnosis" is not explained, viruses are called "known threats". Enabling spyware and malware scans is hidden under "Advanced Settings" under "Known Threats". Scanning for "Unknown Threats" uses Panda's heuristic and behavioral analysis systems to proactively defend against rogue programs not covered under antivi... uh, "known threats". There is a check-mark to "Enable protection against vulnerabilities" that isn't explained.
The performance benefits are a mixed bag. You will notice that boot-up and shutdown will take 20 seconds longer (on our Pentium IV 2GHz system). This is acceptable to us because Panda is aggressively scanning the computer. Also, except for occasional slowdowns explained below, Panda is very efficient in the background and our 2GHz system barely noticed the background protection.
Now, we did notice intermittent slow downs on our 2GHz test system - the computer would slow down noticeably, and even the mouse pointer would turn into an hourglass.
We turned off the Panda firewall and enabled our company standard Agnitum Outpost firewall. After 1/2 an hour, we looked at the logs and we were shocked at what we found.
Panda seems designed to secretly access the internet on a regular basis and send out LOTS of data. And I mean, LOTS. Over a 25 minute period Panda appeared to transmit 768K of data from my computer to Panda's servers.
We had turned off auto-updates, and turned off all options for sending usage data back to Panda. But although Panda had no reason to go outside and play, Panda SENDS LOTS AND LOTS OF DATA OUT FROM YOUR COMPUTER ACROSS THE INTERNET on a regular basis, almost once every 90 seconds.
We logged access to the following domains, each one originating from a Panda program. These were the only domains we are certain originate from the Panda software:
- cache.pandasoftware.com (accesses every 3-5 minutes)
- proinfo.pandasoftware.com
- platis.updates.pandasoftware.com (remember, updates were OFF)
- pandalabs.pandasecurity.com
- acs.pandasoftware.com
- c5.edgesuite.com
- a1913.g.akamaitech.net
- a1945.g.akamaitech.net
- filterdb.iss.net
- bannerfarm.ace.advertising.com (this was a surprise!)
- (a series of IP addresses I won't publish)
These were all OUTBOUND connections.
Hands down, cache.pandasoftware.com was the most prolific. No less than 3 minutes, but no greater than 5 minutes, Panda sent between 13K and 116K of data to that URL.
Panda also made regular accesses to our DNS servers.
Evidently, the Panda software thinks it's entitled to made these accesses and interprets blocking them as an attack. With an internet connection, when an Outpost firewall alert came up for the above domains and if we clocked "Block", the screen suddenly went black and apparently had either locked up or crashed. No amount of coaxing could get the computer to keep going, so we had to power off and on.
The privacy statement for the software can only be viewed during install. The software's privacy statement is not on the install CD nor is it on your hard drive after installation. If you don't print or save the text, you don't get to see it after install.
Panda's privacy statement is dangerously to the point: "for the purpose of contracting and using the program, the licensee may have to give PANDA certain personal data", "The licensee accepts that PANDA may use such information as part of the services provided in relation to the product, and that he/she may receive marketing information. The licensee acknowledges and accepts that PANDA may provide updates or additions to the software which automatically download to his/her computer."
As you can see, "certain personal data" is not spelled out. But after reading the rest of Panda's privacy statement, it is frighteningly clear that the agreement allows for the collection of any data from your computer, and the program may be modified by Panda in any manner they see fit for any reason without notifying you. They don't even try to hide what they are doing.
I called Panda Tech Support (they waived the $19.95 per incident for us) and it only took five minutes to reach a polite and friendly tech support person that was located in the USA. We asked for an explanation for all the internet access. We were first told that even with auto-updates turned off, Panda checks an online database of updated antivirus information whenever it scans. Although the support person was openly concerned and did try to find out what all the internet access was about, his up-line support offered him no further clues as to what Panda is sending from our computer to theirs.
As a result of all this effort, I'm happy to report that Panda Global Protection 2009 uninstalls flawlessly.

Panda started out fine. It found 5 viruses, unfortunately it couldn't do anything with them. It then asked me if I wanted to continue or finish, continue I said. Panda went and found those same 5 viruses it couldn't do anything with. Would I like to save this report it asked? You bet, just insert a floppy disk it said. This is Panda Pro 2009 asking for a floppy disk. Well I bet when I re-boot we can do some good. Lost that bet, my computer won't even start now. No problem, I remember reading about their great tech support. This is from the description on this page "Tech Support 24 hours a day 365 days a year Panda Security is a pioneer in offering round-the-clock customer services. Whenever you need it, PandaLabs and the tech support experts will provide a rapid response via email or the Internet. Enjoy the benefits of having a team of experts at your disposal." Well it sounds real good, unfortunately after explaining in great detail what had happened in an email I got nothing, not even an auto-reply. I spent money, wasted a bunch of time and Panda rendered my computer completely useless. It seems to have worked for a lot of people, I wish it had worked for me.

Bitdefender Antivirus 2010 -3 Pc/1 Yr Review

Bitdefender Antivirus 2010 -3 Pc/1 Yr
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I installed and tried Bit Defender on my laptop, which has previously used Kaspersky internet protection and McAfee.
The program installed easily on my computer, without incident. I found Bit Defender to have a decent-looking interface that is difficult to use. Under the guise of targeting their product to different levels of users (novice/intermediate/expert), they have supposedly made things less complicated, but what that really means is that, at the lower two levels, one is stuck with automated options that cannot be changed without switching to expert mode, and believe me, some of these things are quite irritating.
I found several things troubling about the protection aspect of this software: the first being that at various times, particularly after rebooting, Windows informed me that I had no virus software turned on. I had to manually request it to turn on. And at least two times, for no apparent reason, I received the alert that Bit Defender had turned itself off to perform an update, leaving my computer vulnerable for this period of time. It happened while I was writing this review, and managed to turn itself back on within a minute or so. There was no pop up about this, either: I just happened to be looking at the "dashboard" at that time. The first time this happened to me, I manually restarted the program. This is most unsatisfactory.
This is part of a troubling pattern where the program rarely alerts the user to what is going on. Everything is running in the background -- even many problems. The program just quietly notes them and keeps them to itself. One finds them only by going to the Bit Defender Dashboard to check.
The other option is somewhat incomprehensible pop-ups. I had a problem for several days where I continuously had a pop up that updates could not be performed because the system scan was running. I had no idea what it was talking about. Finally I went to Bit Defender, and it informed me that there was a critical problem that the program had not updated itself in 2 days. It seems that this program spends an inordinate amount of time, at least with the program defaults, conducting deep system scans, which slow down one's computer and render the program unable to update itself, unless you tweak this setting yourself in the expert control setting. These deep system scans take between 2 and 3 hours on my computer and are performed constantly. I honestly have no idea why it needs to perform so many system scans to make sure no virus has gotten through the cracks.
Also, all problems are of equal weight. Don't have the program turned on? Don't have the latest Firefox update? Don't have the latest change to the Windows User Pack? Haven't updated the virus definitions in 10 days? Your system password is not strong? These are all CRITICAL issues, according to Bit Defender, but in reality, I think it's misleading. I don't think the lack of "non-critical Microsoft updates" (which included a picture and video file sharing program) should count as a critical issue affecting the status of an antivirus program.
And how does one know there is an security problem? The program does not go out of its way to alert you. There are no pop ups. There are no alerts. Nothing flashes. Nothing beeps. Instead, one has to go into the program to check on things. I have been unsettled at how many times I have been informed that, for example, no updates have been performed for 5 days -- simply because all updates are canceled if the window for the system scan is open (which is not visible on the taskbar, but only in the small icons in the lower right portion of the screen). Remember, the urgent alerts include both obsolete virus definitions AND not having downloaded some optional multimedia sharing program. Basically, the user assumes all is working well, but it's not; only by seeking out information does one happen to realize the computer may be vulnerable. This is a giant flaw, and it occurs when the program is off and when the system is out of date. This is so whether one is an expert user or a novice.
I did not like that it installed an Anti-Phishing toolbar on IE without consulting me. No toolbar was installed on Firefox.
And an oddity -- after registration, I realized (although I never specified my country of residence), the company had assigned me the country of Senegal. Reading others' reviews it seems that this is common.
So, although this program works for 3 PCs, I am honestly not sure I will install it on any other computers. I have found it to not affect system performance in some aspects -- my computer starts up quickly and doesn't freeze during updates as it occasionally did when using McAfee -- but virtually continuous system scanning and a program that does not really communicate its status in keeping my computer protected from viruses, shows a troubling deficiency in its most important feature.
UPDATE after 2 weeks of using it: It turned automatic updates off, and my computer is not able to obtain any virus definition updates (the updates screen is grayed out and says updates are not available). While awaiting a response from Bit Defender's tech support, I discovered that (judging from their user forum) that this is a very common problem. Tech support advised me to uninstall and then reinstall the product. I decided to uninstall it only.

McAfee Internet Security Suite 2008 - 3 User Review

McAfee Internet Security Suite 2008 - 3 User
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
McAfee have recently introduced AUTOMATIC RENEWAL. It sounds harmless enough, but what that means is, without telling you first, or informing you via email, you are 'opted-in' to this new service, which debits your bank account for cover renewal well in advance.
Basically, they take money from your account without your permission or consent, using your card details they have on record. Not only that, but you can't cancel the automatic renewal service from your online McAfee account; no, you have to contact Customer Services to get it taken off.
There are many people out there who's bank account will be tipped into an overdraft situation with this little McAfee trick, and the banks will then charge people for going overdrawn with their accounts, and all because McAfee think it's fine to take money from peoples accounts without permission, and opting them into something that should legally be agreed to first.
Bottom line - McAfee gives great protection with it's software, but this latest stunt proves that they can act just as badly and dishonestly as the people online they are trying to protect you from. Shame on you, McAfee

Bitdefender Internet Security 2010 - 1-PC/1-Year Review

Bitdefender Internet Security 2010 - 1-PC/1-Year
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this software to replace kaspersky just after getting a windows 7 laptop. At the time kaspersky was not windows 7 ready and Bitdefender was. All lab reports on Bitdefenders were good and it seemed to have a very good feature set. AV lab tests also showed that it was in the top 5 results at the time.
I wish I would have gone another route.
This was a 'license' for 3 PCs. As such I installed it on 2 windows 7 laptops and a Windows XP Media Center 2005 desktop.
It does seem to have a good feature set but it is not reliable. The software when it's working seems good but it keeps shutting down or crashing. The icon in the notification tray will turn grey at random, will give an error that it is not responding forcing the PC to need to be rebooted in order to get it back up and running. This happens constantly on one of my windows 7 laptops and on the xp machine. Also getting this error constantly "vsserv.exe has caused an error and needs to shut down".
I have opened over 5 tickets with Bitdefender support which has been way below standard. The first ticket was closed by them after providing a solution of "run the update"? I was not impressed as another ticket I opened was that the AV definition files would not update. The update would fail to contact the server and the PC would have to be rebooted to make a connection, despite my having a working high speed connection. It would usually be days after before I would notice that it hadn't updated. So for several days my PC would be running out of date Anti Virus definitions.
This added with the constant crashes left my computer vulnerable. If the AV isn't running, or it isn't up to date, how can you trust that your PC is secure?
This was happening on all 3 machines. I'm assuming that there is another piece of software on these machines that may be in conflict with Bitdefender. Unknown at this point as their tech support was unable to resolve. Complete uninstall and reinstall of Bitdefender did not resolve the issue. Unsure if the install bits I have are corrupt or not. The install provided by Bitdefender was over an internet connection. They did not provide me with a hard copy (DVD) of the install bits and the downloaded version of the new install file from Bitdefender had the same result.
Working with their support was a lost cause and after a few months of this nonsense I asked them for a refund.
Their response was "NO". Even though you don't purchase software you license it (2 yr license in my case). Their reply was that after 30 days of purchase no refunds. So I'm paying for a 2 year license I'm not able to use.
After several emails to their customer service in regards to the issue. Advising I know longer trusted this application to protect my pc they still refused to give a refund. I received (2) phone calls from their tech support wanting to troubleshoot further. Was bad enough that it had been months into this at this point, and the software wasn't working, but the tech support who was calling had English so bad I had difficulty understanding them.
Their final solution given was to have me format my (3) three computers so as to get their software to work. This was not an option.
I have been working in IT for several years and hold over 15 industry certifications in the field. In all my experience in dealing with buggy software this has to be the absolute worse in terms of dealing with the software and its customer service.
I would not recommend this software to anyone. Not just because of my technical issue but because of how their customer service and tech support were unwilling to refund my money when they failed to resolve the issue. Reformatting one of the PCs may have been a viable troubleshooting step to try and narrow down what was causing the issue, but a customer should be able to say no at this point if they choose to and get a refund. There has to be a deciding line as to when enough is enough, and how much one should have to work to get something to function as it should. Their are certain expectations every customer has when they make a purchase from a software vendor. Not only to the quality the software, but the support expected from its vendor as well.
If there was a minus star I would have given one. Seems to be a good program when it's running but its not reliable. Tech support and customer service way below standard.
I've since installed another AV/Firewall solution and low and behold. It does not crash. Go figure.
I've still received no refund or further correspondences from BitDefender

McAfee Total Protection 1User 2010 Review

I've used McAfee for years, and I prefer it over several other products I've used. But you need to understand that, while McAfee is very end-user friendly, MCAFEE DOES NOT STOP EVERYTHING. In fact, as one reviewer said, there ARE indeed better products out there. But I find them difficult to use. I just set up my firewall and system so that nothing gets downloaded without my express okay, and then I save everything and virus scan before opening. Additionally, it's my observation that McAfee is not that great at detecting and removing spyware and adware. Thus, I use two other freeware programs and I scan with all three. Spybot and Adaware both frequently catch things that the other two programs I use do not.
I haven't had to use McAfee customer service except to deal with an auto renewal issue with McAfee last summer, and let me tell you, the fellow who had bad things to say about customer service wasn't kidding about how difficult it is to find assistance and actually get it. Customer service calls are enough to send you postal!
UPDATE 1/12/2010: I just had to call McAfee customer service and this occasion it was easy, pleasant, and my problem was immediately resolved. So perhaps the various negative comments have been heard.

Average Reviews:

I am using the 2009 version (with two years updates) which I understand is essentially the same. I would not purchase again for a couple of reason:
1. We are a small office with about 10 users. I have had to refomat 2 computers due to infections. Yes, the users should have been more careful but that is why you purchase an antivirus product. Bitdefender did not stop the infections and could not clean the computers. Have used Norton in the past and unfortunately it blocked some software we use and slowed down machines.
2. On 3 computers the antivirus software stopped working. After hours searching on their website I found fixes. Why weren't these fixes downloaded automatically? Why don't they make it easy to find?
On the plus side the product appears to have small footprint. Computers don't appear to slow down when it is installed. Even scans don't seem to slow down the computer.
