Panda Antivirus + Firewall 2008 3-User Review

Panda Antivirus + Firewall 2008 3-User

I installed this programm on Vista Home Premium running PC. It slowed it so significantly. Before I had McAfee programm and it didn't have any problems with Vista. It (Panda) will make your fast computers into slow moving train. Waste of money.
Update:
Now two days ago when I finally tinkered with firewall (setting which allows certain programs and files to have inbound or outbound or both internet connections) program started to work normally and it doesn't slow my computer at all. It seems by default Panda is very restrictive in allowing your programs to have free internet browsing. There are also intel's remoting services files which don't liked to be blocked by Panda. In short, if something doesn't work when you install Panda try to check your's Panda firewall setting, if you won't firewall will make a wall in your computer.
Update, one more: Here is my letter to Panda customer support: After installing your programm on my Vista home premium PC, my computer started to perform very slowly. Prior to installing Panda I had McAfee antivirus software which didn't slow my system at all (I uninstalled it already). What is going on? Why your programm makes my computer so slow? Please, don't tell me its because Vista is bad programm. I know that Vista is bad but it worked wonderfull with McAfee software and it doesn't with your Panda. I really regret that I installed your programm at my computer. Is there any way to make it not slowing my system.
Here is Technical support answer: Hello,

The reason the computer is operating slowly is because there is most likely remnants of McAfee still on the system. You should run their removal utility to make sure that all remnants of McAfee are removed properly and so it does not conflict with Panda.
It appears that you may have remnant files from McAfee Security application on your system causing conflict for Panda during the installation. In order for you to remove the remnant files, please click on the following link to the view the instructions:
http://us.pandasecurity.com/techsupport/templates/mcafee.htm
Here is again my answer: Thank you for your help. I did remove all McAfee software. However it wasn't the reason Panda slowed my computer. It appeared that some default setting on Panda Firewall blocked lots of program's inbound and outbound internet connections on my computer. After a changed the setting letting outbound connection to some of my programs-computer started to work normally. I, as a customer, would advise you not to put such powerful defaults in your firewall since it may scare people of not buying your programm at all, since it literally brings computer to a stop and takes lots of macnine resources.
I hope this help someone to find solution to their panda problem

Norton 360 Version 4.0 1 User-3 PC Review

Norton 360 Version 4.0 1 User-3 PC
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been using Norton for 7 years and after having tried many other Anti-Virus solutions it is easy to say Norton is always the most reliable and hassle free.
A few of the product comments here make this down-loadable version of Norton 360 sound hard to use, and that is just not the case.
Getting this download version saved me $15 over having the boxed version shipped, not to mention it was instant.
I had protection going 5 minutes after my order.
Now I did already have a trial version of Norton 360 installed that I had downloaded directly from the Norton site. I just choose to purchase from Amazon after my trial version expired for 2 reasons.
#1 I love Amazon.
#2 The price at Amazon was way better than buying direct from the software vendors own website.
I just purchased 360 here and used the license key Amazon gave me to activate my expired 30 day trial version.
Even if I had not had the trial version already installed, purchasing and downloading this software from Amazon is not complicated at all, as some of the other reviewers would make you believe.
Yes you do have to install the Amazon down-loader software. So what, it was super simple, and you can always uninstall it later if you wish.
Once you install the down-loader which takes all of 30 seconds, you then download the Norton 360 software.
You can then choose to install Norton 360 right from the downloader, however a backup copy of Norton 360 is added into a folder on your PC. On my windows 7 machine this location was at:
C:\Users\Public\Documents\Amazon Games & Software
It is named N360-ESD-17-6-0-32-EN.exe so if you can not find the folder just search for that on your PC. You can then easily burn that to a CD so you can install the software on 3 separate computers.
Optionally you could also just transfer the .exe file over your network to your other 2 machines if you have a network setup in your home or office.
I added screen shots of the down-loader and the path within amazon to access your license key after your purchase in the images at the top of this products page.
After your order simply go to your Amazon account to get your product key. Just use the "Your Account" link and then under "Digital Content" select the link titled "Your Games and Software Library". Look for the orange "Your product key" button to access your license key.
Super easy, and super fast! This is a great deal compared to having the product shipped in a Box on CD that you will just end up throwing away after your install anyway!
Go Green and purchase this downloaded version of Norton 360!

Norton Internet Security Suite 2007 - 3 User Review

Norton Internet Security Suite 2007 - 3 User
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I received this product on Oct. 26,2006 and have been using it for only three days, so my observations are a little limited.
I successfully installed the program and created an account with Symantec -- no problems there. It ran a full system scan and found and removed some problem files. However, as another rater posted, it slowed down Windows to an agonizing crawl (it took over a minute just to launch an application). Every click of the mouse key meant at least 20 seconds for Windows to respond.
Disappointed and wondering if I was going to have to invoke Symantec's warranty of a 60-day refund if not satisfied, I uninstalled the program. With Norton gone, Windows ran FASTER than before I had installed Norton! It must have cleaned up something.
So, I went to Symantec's site and found their "FAQs" (had to use their search engine to find them) and looked for a problem similar. There was one, and it said that my system might not have enough memory. I checked the system requirements on the box, and it said 256M required, and I have 2G. I re-installed Norton (no problems), let it run a full system scan, and began experimenting by disabling all except the basic feature. Windows ran normally. I then added features back (by checking the appropriate box) one at a time and discovered the most resource-consuming routine is the Automatic Updates. I'm not sure, but it seems that the speed of your internet connection would affect this also (I have a high-speed connection).
With the automatic update disabled, I ran a full system scan again, and it found one virus. Windows now runs normally, and I'm satisfied. Will just have to remember to run the updates periodically.
Update: No need to remember to run updates periodically. It has a feature that reminds you when Symantec has an update ready.
Update #2: Some virus must have gotten by this program because only about four months into the subscription, I got the "blue screen of death." The computer would not load Windows, but it would let me run it in Safe Mode. I could not solve this problem and called in an expert. He was not able to solve it either. I ended up builting a new computer, but this time I installed AVG (free) anti-virus, the one the expert recommended. It seems to work better than Norton.

After reading the review of this product in PC WORLD just the other day, I went ahead and ordered the program. The review was right on, this program found 11 spyware files and one Trojan Horse file in my home computer. Interesting, because I run Ad-Aware and Spybot as my anti-spyware programs daily......and these two didn't find what Counterspy found! I'm sold. Though my other programs are "free", I gladly will spend the $19 bucks or so for this program for my other machines now. No, I don't work for the PC World folks; nor the Counterspy folks; nor Amazon or any computer outfit....Am retired, and have fun building computers for fun and family!

McAfee Anti-Theft 2009 1-User Review

McAfee Anti-Theft 2009 1-User
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This was a very difficult review for me to write, as I am uncertain about my feelings of this software. There are a lot of evil-doers out there, and I certainly want my data to be safe. However, using software to protect my data leaves me feeling a bit uneasy. Software can be hacked and cracked, not to mention having to deal with bugs and compatibility issues. And what if the software somehow becomes corrupt and fails to work properly? Will your data still be protected properly, or will you find that even you can no longer access your precious files? Every step we take to protect ourselves adds another level of complexity in our lives, and also another element of potential malfunction and failure. But today we use computers to access the entire world; to purchase products, pay our bills, communicate with friends and family, and to store our precious memories and financial data. You can't just leave yourself unprotected and vulnerable to an attack from an outsider. McAfee has introduced a product that claims to offer consumers peace of mind, by locking up our most important data into one or more "vaults" on our hard drives. Is this the answer for keeping us safe from prying eyes, or is it just another money maker for a company trying to lead us into a sense of false security?
I decided to install the McAfee Anti-Theft 2009 software on my tablet PC, which seemed to be the most likely computer to potentially fall into wrong hands. Although this software can certainly be installed onto a desktop computer, I feel that portable computers are far more likely to be stolen and/or accessed by someone that we do not wish. The product box contains a CD and Quick Start guide only. No user manual is included, although there is more documentation provided on the CD itself. Installation was very simple and straightforward. Upon inserting the CD into your drive, you are prompted with a pop-up screen, with some rather bland text links; one of which is to install the program. The entire installation took roughly a minute or so, followed by a prompt to register (aka. "Activate") the software. In most (if not all) cases, the installation will require a reboot of the PC. The program allows you to setup one or more "vaults," which can be sized from 50 MB to 4 GB. Be warned, once you setup a vault, the size CANNOT be changed! If you setup your vault too small, once you fill it up you would have to create another vault to store more files. I would recommend simply setting the maximum size of 4 GB, unless your available hard drive space is very limited. You then setup a password and enter 3 password recovery questions, in case you forget your password down the road. You are now able to start copying files into your protected vault. Notice I said "copy" instead of move? I said that because dragging your files into the vault(s) only creates a copy of the files. It does not completely move them, and also does not delete the file from its original location when copied into the vault. This creates a potential security risk and therefore falls into my "cons" listing mentioned later. So overall, installation and setup is about as fast and simple as one could hope for.
Once in the vault(s), your data is protected with the 256-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), with is pretty standard with most software encryption technologies today, but is certainly not unhackable. You can lock and unlock your vault(s) manually, or they can be locked automatically in a specified timeframe (or when your screensaver is activated). I definitely like the ease of use elements of this program, and it is certainly something that doesn't require a degree in computer science to use. However, these data vaults can easily be copied onto other drives, without needing to enter your password, so someone could still make a copy of your data to try and hack at their leisure. Also, what if something goes wrong with the software and it becomes unstable? Will your data be locked and inaccessible by yourself when you need it? McAfee also boasts that your vault can be stored on a USB flash drive, or any removable storage media. What they don't tell you is that you need to have a copy of McAfee Anti-Theft software installed on any and every computer you intend to access this data from. Therefore you cannot simply use this software to create a portable data vault, for which you intend to carry to and access from multiple computers, without first purchasing and installing this software onto each one of these computers. This can definitely become a problem, if your intentions are to use the software as a USB flash drive encryption utility, to access and/or transfer data between your flash drive and several business computers.
McAfee boasts the following benefits and features of its Anti-Theft 2009 software:
*Secure your files using strong file encryption:
256-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) technology protects your financial documents and identity against thieves and hackers.
*Create multiple vaults on your PC and USB drive:
Setup multiple vaults for yourself, family members or co-workers.
*Easily transfer and hide files:
Move files into vault and keep them private even if you share a computer.
*Password protect your vault:
Create secure password for your vault and use password reset option if needed.
*Additional protection:
Provides an extra layer of protection over your basic PC security.
*Use with other computer security software
I feel that the McAfee Anti-Theft 2009 software does perform as promised. It is extremely easy to install, requires very little system resources from your computer and operating system, and does offer a modest level of safety for your sensitive data. However, as a person that has been in the I.T. support field for over 20 years, I do have a list of concerns when using a software solution like this. The encryption technology used in this software is not 100% safe, and can be cracked by someone with the right knowledge and evil intensions. The fact that the data vault(s) can be easily copied to another device, even without your knowledge, is very concerning as well, as this would allow a hacker to grab a copy of your data and then work at cracking the encryption without you even knowing that your data may have been compromised. I also don't like the thought of my data becoming irretrievable by myself, if the software should go belly up on my PC. Sure I could remove and reinstall the software, or transfer my data vault to another computer and install the software on that device, but think of the wasted time it could take to retrieve important data that you may need access to right away.
So as an attempt to summarize my personal findings and concerns, here is a list of pros and cons that I find with McAfee Anti-Theft 2009:
Pros
******
- Impressively easy and fast installation.
-Easy to configure and use.
-Very low impact on operating system resources.
-Each vault is seen as a virtual drive by Windows, providing a separate drive letter for each vault.
-Simple drag and drop process for copying files and folders into your vault(s).
-256-bit Advanced Encryption Standard offers a decent level of security for your data.
-Offers a low cost answer to data security for the average consumer.
Cons
*******
- Files and folders are copied, NOT moved, to data vault(s), leaving the need for original files and folders to be deleted manually by the user.
-256-bit AES technology has been around for quite awhile, and is known to be hackable by anyone with the knowhow.
-Vault files can be easily copied to any other computer or removable storage device, allowing someone to copy your data and attempt to hack the encryption at their leisure.
-Vault sizes cannot be changed once initially configured.
-Software license is only valid for one year, requiring the consumer to pay more money to renew every year if they want their protection to remain up to date.
-Software must be purchased and installed on every PC that you wish to share or access your data from (if you desire to keep your vault on a USB storage device).
-If the software ever fails, you could potentially find yourself unable to access your own data.
-McAfee is known to charge a fee for advanced technical support, should you ever need their assistance with this software. Fees can range anywhere from $9.95 to $59.95 per incident.
- There are many other data encryption utilities, which are more secure and more cost-effective (some are even FREE!), such as TrueCrypt.
As a basic line of defense, I believe that McAfee Anti-Theft 2009 is a good, stable product. For the average consumer and modest computer user, this software could be an easy solution to all of your data protection concerns. However, this software definitely has some security holes, such as the fact that it simply makes copies of your files and folders in the data vault(s), rather than moving them entirely from their original locations. This means that the user must remember to delete the originals after making copies in their vaults. If you don't delete the originals, then you have simply left copies of your data unprotected. Anti-Theft 2009 also creates yet another reoccurring expense for the consumer, requiring annual renewal of your software in order to remain fully protected. There are many other products on the market, which offer stronger security and many more features. For anyone that is really serious about data security, you should consider entire partition or drive encryption. With a free utility, such as TrueCrypt, you could protect your entire hard drive with real-time,...Read more›

Norton AntiVirus 2003 Review

Norton AntiVirus 2003

Norton Antivirus 2003 is full of bugs. Unless you want a bunch of headaches stick with the proven version 2002. Norton Antivirus is still a much better product than McAfees (I experienced problems with them from the beginning, but never had problems with Norton 2001 or 2002.) Their rush to get a new product out by the new year has them releasing a poor product...perhaps they should simply name the product version6.whatever instead of by the year so they don't have to rush something that is clearly not ready to be placed out on the market yet!

PC Tools Spyware Doctor 2009 Review

PC Tools Spyware Doctor 2009
Average Reviews:

Positive points regarding Spyware Doctor.
This software removed extra spyware that CA securities, adware, and Spybot missed. It actually found a good amount of additional spyware.
The software was easy to load and operate.
The spyware detection runs through its cycle relatively fast.
Negative points
The option to use active protection causes conflicts and near crashes apparently.
At different times at least 50% of my processing power was being dedicated to running the software.
I have a modern up-to-date computer with Intel dual processors 2.5 gigs of RAM. Therefore the computer should easily be able to run this software without bogging down.
Overall I like the idea of removing extra spyware I just wish the program was fully functional and could prevent spyware form entering my system.

I had a major problem with spyware parasites on my computer. So bad that I could barely log on to my web provider and either my computer would freeze , I'd recieve an "open windows limit" sign , or my web provider would just crash and disappear. That is very fustrating and annoying and also scary because it may be some crook trying to steal information from you. You never know.
I purchased Spy Sweeper , placed the disc in the cd-rom (Windows ME) , it popped up on the screen by itself , I followed the instruction , downloaded it on my computer , and then started cleaning these things out easily! I had over 60 parasites on my computer. Now I have zero!
I was so happy. It also defines the spyware and it gives you an option to either quarintine it or delete it completely from your computer. IT ALSO WORKS AS A SHIELD THAT KEEPS NEW SPYWARE PARASITES FROM ATTACKING AS YOU SURF THE WEB! THEN SHOWS YOU WHAT SPYWARE ATTEMPTED TO ATTACK YOUR COMPUTER!
This is an excellent product because not only does it get rid of the spyware it also can keep your computer spyware free! Now my computer works as good as new and I don't have those problems that I described earlier.
Its a great investment because it really works!

McAfee Internet Security 2009 3-User Review

McAfee Internet Security 2009 3-User
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I tried the previous version which I considered average, Internet Security 2009 seems to be improved in a number of areas,
Installation was trouble free. McAfee gives you the choice of installing the version on your CD or downloading the most current version. This is a sensible approach, I think. I chose the download it sent smoothly. Even with the downloading, the install went pretty quickly.
For my testing, I installed it on a system running Windows XP SP2 Media Center, having first uninstalled the free Comodo anti-virus and firewall applications running on the machine.
I could not complete the registration/activation process because McAfee's server did not respond. Thus, I was unable to learn if McAfee still forces you to give them a credit card number for automatic renewal of your anti-virus subscription. You weren't able to cancel this forced transaction online: you had to call McAfee. A poor way to do business in my opinion.
McAfee may have changed this policy somewhat. In combing through their Customer Support area, I learned that it may only be online purchasers who get nailed this way.
The problem with an ordinary person testing ant-virus programs is that unlike a formal lab, they may not have a bunch of viruses and malware lurking in their machines. I can tell you that the anti-virus scanning speed appears to be high and doesn't over burden the CPU, which is nice when compared with some other programs, like Norton's.
The Help file will leave most users pretty much in the dark with its brusque explanations. For example, an inexperienced user wanting to change the firewall settings for some reason may quickly be reduced to pulling their hair out.
McAfee, to its credit, does an excellent job of identifying the applications on your machine and setting the right firewall permissions for them. I don't know how it will do when you add new programs to your system.
McAfee has put a lot of features into Internet Security 2009 at a very reasonable price for three users. Some of them, such as the file shredder and file cleaner, aren't mentioned on the box. Neither is the back up program or the network manager. I didn't try any of these features.
Overall, I think Internet Security 2009 is an improved product over last year's version. It seems to execute faster and hog fewer system resources. Happily the number of inrusive pop-ups seems to have been substantialy reduced. For the money, it seems to be a good, solid product.
Jerry

Vipre AntiVirus + AntiSpyware Review

Vipre AntiVirus + AntiSpyware
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I first installed Vipre, I was very impressed. It installed smoothly and ran with low memory. It did an excellent job with automatic updates and scans.
About a week after I installed it, Vipre prompted me that it had found a deep threat virus and needed me to reboot in order to completely clean the computer. I followed the instructions and could not get the system to reboot. I kept getitng the "blue screen of death."
I went through several diaganostics, bios checks, etc. Bottom line was that I could access the hard drive and it's files (and was able to rescue them), but I could not get it to boot to Windows. Even when I reordered the BIOS to boot from the CD ROM (to use the Windows XP Install disk), it gave me a "Windows cannot locate a hard drive."
I called Vipre (Sunbelt) and spoke with a very nice technician who told me that this is a "known problem" and that Vipre sometimes attacks a system file that is valid but acting in an abnormal way. He sent me some file links that would/should help in getting the hard drive and CPU to communicate.
I then spoke with the Geek Squad (since I couldn't even get on email at that point) and had several diagnostics run. Bottom line - I had to replace the hard drive.
I have since spoke with Sunbelt and the same technician who originally helped me. He was very nice, but explained that they do not reimburse for damage caused by their software. This did not make me happy as I have now spent $300 to replace the hard drive, not to mention the time wasted on a large consulting project I was working on as it took about a week to get it all worked out.
8/3/09 - EDITED REVIEW: I have spoken with the CEO of Sunbelt and they have fully reimbursed the cost of the repairs and have commented, both here and to me directly, that the problem that I encountered has been fixed in the current release of the software.
I am SUPER impressed with this company and, with their excellent customer service, have revised my review. It really is an excellent product and this company truly stands behind their products.

Panda Global Protection 2009 - 3 User Review

Panda Global Protection 2009 - 3 User
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Our company tested Panda Global Protection 2009 as part of a series of tests of various security suites. The program installs with little difficulty, and is very easy to use. After we installed Panda on out Pentium IV 2GHz test system, about a dozen programs run in the background protecting your computer.
All features of Panda are available when not logged into Windows XP/2000 as an Administrator. You can choose which features of Panda require a supervisor password, nice for a corporate environment. The labels for the controls are somewhat cryptic. "Self-diagnosis" is not explained, viruses are called "known threats". Enabling spyware and malware scans is hidden under "Advanced Settings" under "Known Threats". Scanning for "Unknown Threats" uses Panda's heuristic and behavioral analysis systems to proactively defend against rogue programs not covered under antivi... uh, "known threats". There is a check-mark to "Enable protection against vulnerabilities" that isn't explained.
The performance benefits are a mixed bag. You will notice that boot-up and shutdown will take 20 seconds longer (on our Pentium IV 2GHz system). This is acceptable to us because Panda is aggressively scanning the computer. Also, except for occasional slowdowns explained below, Panda is very efficient in the background and our 2GHz system barely noticed the background protection.
Now, we did notice intermittent slow downs on our 2GHz test system - the computer would slow down noticeably, and even the mouse pointer would turn into an hourglass.
We turned off the Panda firewall and enabled our company standard Agnitum Outpost firewall. After 1/2 an hour, we looked at the logs and we were shocked at what we found.
Panda seems designed to secretly access the internet on a regular basis and send out LOTS of data. And I mean, LOTS. Over a 25 minute period Panda appeared to transmit 768K of data from my computer to Panda's servers.
We had turned off auto-updates, and turned off all options for sending usage data back to Panda. But although Panda had no reason to go outside and play, Panda SENDS LOTS AND LOTS OF DATA OUT FROM YOUR COMPUTER ACROSS THE INTERNET on a regular basis, almost once every 90 seconds.
We logged access to the following domains, each one originating from a Panda program. These were the only domains we are certain originate from the Panda software:
- cache.pandasoftware.com (accesses every 3-5 minutes)
- proinfo.pandasoftware.com
- platis.updates.pandasoftware.com (remember, updates were OFF)
- pandalabs.pandasecurity.com
- acs.pandasoftware.com
- c5.edgesuite.com
- a1913.g.akamaitech.net
- a1945.g.akamaitech.net
- filterdb.iss.net
- bannerfarm.ace.advertising.com (this was a surprise!)
- (a series of IP addresses I won't publish)
These were all OUTBOUND connections.
Hands down, cache.pandasoftware.com was the most prolific. No less than 3 minutes, but no greater than 5 minutes, Panda sent between 13K and 116K of data to that URL.
Panda also made regular accesses to our DNS servers.
Evidently, the Panda software thinks it's entitled to made these accesses and interprets blocking them as an attack. With an internet connection, when an Outpost firewall alert came up for the above domains and if we clocked "Block", the screen suddenly went black and apparently had either locked up or crashed. No amount of coaxing could get the computer to keep going, so we had to power off and on.
The privacy statement for the software can only be viewed during install. The software's privacy statement is not on the install CD nor is it on your hard drive after installation. If you don't print or save the text, you don't get to see it after install.
Panda's privacy statement is dangerously to the point: "for the purpose of contracting and using the program, the licensee may have to give PANDA certain personal data", "The licensee accepts that PANDA may use such information as part of the services provided in relation to the product, and that he/she may receive marketing information. The licensee acknowledges and accepts that PANDA may provide updates or additions to the software which automatically download to his/her computer."
As you can see, "certain personal data" is not spelled out. But after reading the rest of Panda's privacy statement, it is frighteningly clear that the agreement allows for the collection of any data from your computer, and the program may be modified by Panda in any manner they see fit for any reason without notifying you. They don't even try to hide what they are doing.
I called Panda Tech Support (they waived the $19.95 per incident for us) and it only took five minutes to reach a polite and friendly tech support person that was located in the USA. We asked for an explanation for all the internet access. We were first told that even with auto-updates turned off, Panda checks an online database of updated antivirus information whenever it scans. Although the support person was openly concerned and did try to find out what all the internet access was about, his up-line support offered him no further clues as to what Panda is sending from our computer to theirs.
As a result of all this effort, I'm happy to report that Panda Global Protection 2009 uninstalls flawlessly.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7.0 Review

Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7.0
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After a series of frustrations with Norton Antivirus I resolved to search for a better alternative. I noticed that Kaspersky Antivirus 6.0 was well regarded by the user community, so I decided to make the switch to 7.0 when I purchased my new computer.
Kaspersky has far exceeded my expectations. I experienced no problems whatever with installation--no other antivirus programs had been installed since this was a new computer. Moreover, I found the program to be readily adaptable to my needs as a user. Most important, Kaspersky allowed me to set the level of intrusion that I wanted rather than to simply tolerate too high a level, which is clearly undesirable. I particularly liked the feature that allows you to set the update at a time that is suitable for you. (I chose daily at 7:30 AM rather than hourly.) I also liked the backup disk feature, which is easy to use and essential for system recovery. All of these capabilities are documented in the well-written, 67 page User's Guide. The crucial point to see is that Kaspersky gives you more choice and more control than has usually been the case.
In short, I highly recommend this product to anyone seeking an improved, nicely behaved, and easily customized antivirus program. Kaspersky 7.0 is an outright winner among the alternatives that I am aware of.

Panda Antivirus Pro 2010 1 User Review

Panda Antivirus Pro 2010 1 User
Average Reviews:

This is the first time that I have made a product review on Amazon, but given my experience with this product I felt the need to. First of all, while the box states that this product is Windows 7 ready, if you try and install this product on a Windows 7 system you will get the following statement: The installation of Panda Antivirus Pro has been canceled. You are trying to install this product on an operating system that is not yet supported.
I had a Windows Vista machine and was running the 2009 version on it. Two weeks prior to the time my expiration date was up, the program stated given two to three alerts every three minutes stating that update had canceled. It seems that they stop your ability to update two weeks prior to actual expiration date and try and spam you into renewing. Even the fact that they will charge you $20 more to buy it on their website than the current Amazon price and the tack on an additional $9.52 for an "Express Download Service," if you really feel the need to buy this product, save yourself the trouble and buy it in the store so you can then return it easier when it will not install on your computer.
I will now be going to TrendMicro instead of Panda.

I've read all the reviews of this Trend Smart Surfing for the Mac and can see both sides. Some people don't think the program is necessary, other think the more protection the better. McAfee VirusScan Plus 2007 Review

McAfee VirusScan Plus 2007
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pro: Buy this only if you need all 3 programs and do not already have any of them.
Those being:
1. anti-virus
2. firewall
3. anti spyware
CONS: several (read on)
My antispyware from mcafee expired sept 2006.
I contacted mcafee and found out that you cannot buy it separately anymore.
You have to buy a stupid "suite" of mcafee softwares in order to get the
antispyware program.
So I bought this particular mcafee "suite" .
[Remember now, I bought this ONLY for the antispyware program.
(maybe down the road, I'll use the mcafee firewall. But at present
my ZA6 is still good for 6 months).
Just the Antispyware program].
What mcafee did NOT tell me is that this "Suite" will want to install
what it thinks I should install, not what I tell it I want/need installed.Surprise #1 !
The antispyware does not have it's own install program.
(probably tied in as part of the anti-virus)
Surprise #2 !
Tried to install as a CUSTOM install and once it sees that
zone alarm 6(my firewall) is loaded, it gives me the option to "Skip" this item, leaving the current installed program in place.
I did so and then it tells me:
a. it cannot load the virusscan due to the zone alarm being found????
[What kind of "CUSTOMIZED install" is this?
CUSTOMIZED means that the installer dictates what gets installed.
Not according to this software pkg].
b. What does the a competitor's firewall have to do with mcafee's virusscanner not installing ??
They are 2 different function programs.
What kind junk is this????
c. Who cares whether ZA6 firewall is found? It should NOT prevent the viruscan and anti-spyware from loading/installing.
Surprise #3
Looks like mcafee won and I lost.
I want the stinking ANTISPYWARE and only the antispyware.
They don't want to give it to me as a single program.
Good thing the box says they have a 30 day moneyback guarantee.
REMEMBER :
If you need all 3 programs because you got a new pc, or your old subscription for a whole "suite" of programs has expired,
This package MIGHT work for you.
If you are looking for ONLY the anti-spyware application;
FORGET IT!
Consider the Mcafee Antispyware application part of
"SUITE installation only" package.
It doesn't install by itself as a standalone program anymore.
Go get webroot's spysweeper or sunbelt's counterspy.
Both/either are good
--------------------
UPDATE 10-06-2006
I installed this onto a 2nd pc, since it is not worth my efforts and postage costs to return it to mcafee for a refund.
As a suite that exists by itself, without any other conflicting applications, it does a decent job.
I was testing it a bit more and it does give a nice display of my home network - router, modem, other pc's, and such. Active or disconnected network links on the home network,IP addresses and network names, ect.
For this 2nd pc that I installed it on, when it failed to install onto my primary pc, it works fine.
In that respect, I would give it 4 stars.-----------------------------------

Trend Micro Internet Security Review

Trend Micro Internet Security
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As an IT professional with years of experience in consumer support I feel it's almost a duty to review security software such as TrendMicro's Internet Security suite. But in order to properly understand my review I need to explain that I have some pretty strict criteria for my evaluation.
1. Ease of use, installation and maintenance: the application suite must be easy for the average user to install maintain, and use. Ideally the product should be out of sight out of mind as much as possible, simply performing its job in the background.
2. Lack of interference in daily use of the PC: the application suite should not slow down a modern PC with reasonable hardware specifications; it should not bother the user with pop-ups about what it is doing nor with minor "threats" such as cookies.
3. Level of threat protection : the user's PC should be protected against network (attacks used by worms), web (attacks used by hackers on the web) and file system attacks (malicious file downloads).
4. Ease of customization when required: if something is blocked that should not be, a reasonably proficient user should not need to seek professional help configuring the application.
ThrendMicro is, in my opinion, one of the best producers of security software available. In "ease of use and maintenance" they score very highly. Any user who is able to install software and actually understand the process will be able to install a consumer product produced by Trend. ***** so five stars for category one.
However they still only score three stars for lack of interference. The software does NOT slow down the PC (Pentium D, with 2GB RAM, not a high end machine) but companies like Trend, Symantec, and McAfee need to understand that if I can manually put the window from a scan to run invisibly in the background, maybe it should just run there anyway. I also don't care that Trend has deleted the cookies from my computer. I don't want to be told about the removal of threats of the most minimal risk level. I have also found several legit sites that were blocked that annoyed me. For example, I tried to watch streaming video from FOX's web site and it was blocked. ***-- for category two.
Five stars, though, for threat protection. If your system is up-to-date, Trend is up-to-date and you do not disable it you will almost certainly not get infected. The problem arises when the user participates in high-risk behaviors like file sharing (bit-torrent, eMule, etc) and then disables the software to access something they shouldn't. This is the surest way to 0wn3d, to use a technical term. *****
I have to give them credit on ease of customization. Unlike Symantec's Endpoint Protection (which was a nightmare for nearly all categories) Trend's products have always had a simple, easy to understand interface. They use intuitive names like "web protection" for their services enabling even unsophisticated users to understand where to click when they need to find something.
4 ½ overall score. Not bad! I highly recommend this software to protect your PC.

McAfee AntiVirus Plus 1User 2010 Review

McAfee AntiVirus Plus 1User 2010
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I tend to go back and forth between security products from time to time...like many, I have multiple computers, and somehow I think it's safer to use a mix of security products rather than standardize on the same product everywhere. I haven't used McAfee for a few years, but I decided to give it a try this time as it came preinstalled on my new laptop.
Compared to Norton and most of the others, the basic features are very similar. The product detects and removes viruses (more than 200,000 types, according to the vendor) and spyware, while also including anti-phishing and identity theft protection. One unique feature of McAfee is that it periodically makes copies of key system configuration files, enabling you to restore your system to a known good status should something bad happen. Another unique feature I liked was that the product evaluates the security of web links as they are displayed, highlighting suspicious links before you're tempted to follow them.
I also found the administration and policies more useful than the competing products - very much appreciated. It can be a little complex at first, but if you like to have fine-grained control of security policy, this is the best product I've seen.
I personally found a few of the features less useful, for instance, home network security. I tend to secure my system at my router (which acts as a firewall), and I generally leave the network inside my home relatively open. McAfee's home network protection didn't impress me as adding anything worthwhile to this mix.
The product installs easily on my Windows Vista system and I was up and running in under ten minutes.
Compared to the Norton (Symantec) product (which I run on another computer), McAfee seems slower overall, but less "spikey". The Norton product tends to be faster overall, but when it does something resource-intensive (like download signatures), it tends to be more noticeable. McAfee is sort of the opposite - it's slower generally, but performance seems more even and consistent. Still, the only time I'd say it was objectionable were times when I'd have a huge amount of incoming email, especially email with lots of attachments. These conditions slow down my PC, and a quick visit to Windows Task Manager reveals McAfee as the culprit.
Still, overall this is a fine product that's stable and capable of providing top quality security protection.
