(More customer reviews)I have been experimenting with relational databases for some time now and I have used both Microsoft Access and Filemaker. Without question, Filemaker has consistently been the easiest, most intuitive of the two products. I am not a programmer but simply an end user who likes to delve into spread sheets and databases as the need arises. Microsoft Access may have more advanced features, things I would probably never use, and conversely it is much more difficult to navigate and it is not as user friendly from someone who isn't a programmer.
The beauty of File Maker Pro is that in about 2 hours of sitting down and going thru the help files, you can literally be up and running in the rudimentary aspects of relational database protocols, and you can also produce some fantastic, professional looking interfaces and reports for your data. I upgraded from version 7 and I really enjoy the new calendar pull down menus and the creation of PDF records within the program and sending via e-mail. It also features several new tools that help in importing and exporting data and in creating better looking forms and reports. If you are a savvy database user, the cost to upgrade from 7 to 8 may not be worth it depending on your level of expertise. I like to stay current on all of my software so if I use an application on a regular basis then I stay current with the latest version - that is my motto. People needing to find a relational database application and who need a quick, powerful tool to assist them need to look no further.

I too am a prolific writer and I have always preferred WordPerfect over the clownish Microsoft Word that, as with all Microsoft products, is a simply Frankenstein of features lifted from the programs of other companies.
WordPerfect 8 was so buggy an inefficient that I came close to dumping the program. Happily, versions 9 to the present have been constant improvements over both its former incarnations and its competitors. I loved WordPerfect 10.
I now have WordPerfect 11. I admit I've only had it for a short while; so far, though, it has worked perfectly. It loads FASTER than former versions and certainly no slower than my version of Word 2002. It converts files to and from other formats. Publishes flawlessly to HTML and PDF. TextArt works much better than any previous versions or Microsoft's sad little imitation of it. It works perfectly with all my printers (and I have several types, models, and brands of printer rigged up to a wireless network) and I've had no problem -- with or without updated drivers.
I do admit with one embarassment -- that WordPerfect has nothing that comes close to competing with Mr. Paperclip, that cute little helper for Microsoft Word. I think if they had one, WordPerfect might sell a lot better.
I am reminded of a song from the sixties. It has become for me a metaphor for many aspects of life. It was called: It's the singer, not the song."

PC-Cillin Internet Security 2006 Review

(More customer reviews)I disagree with the argument that this is not an improvement over the 2005 version.
First of all, you have to purchase the newer edition to continue to receive updates from Trend Micro or any other InterNet Security program.
Second, I think the interface of the 2006 version is much improved over the 2005 version, which I replaced. With more options such as Anti Phishing protection, I feel the 2006 edition is easier to navigate than the 2005 edition.
Third, Trend Micro continues to be one of the best Internet Security products on the market. Before TM, I used McAfee, which crashed my old computer at the time (3 years ago). I also used Norton 2003, it was better than McAfee, but I noticed significant slow down in the performance of my computer. I am using 2.4 Gig Dell with 1 Gig RAM, it is 3 years old and Trend Micro runs smoothly in the back ground. The slow down is practically insignificant.
In short, I love the program and will continue to upgrade with it for years to come. I hope this helps.

Users should also be aware that they will be forced to upgrade this software. at considerable expense, every 3 years. Also payroll services are not included and cost $150.00 more PER year. The upgrade from Quickbooks Pro 2003 went very smoothly. Unfortunately the software, with no notification to the user, adds a second user to the XP operating system, necessitating logging on as a particular user when your computer boots.
We've found no real benefits from this "upgrade". The software boots much slower thanks to the DOUBLING of the company file. New users may find the redesigned home page useful and despite a great deal of verbage - that is about all that is new here.
New users should take advantage of the 30 days of free support - after that Quicken's dubious support is very high priced.
Quicken's business model is important to understand. They do not tweak their software, from year to year, for increased useability. The only changes that Quicken seems to devote their programming talent toward are new features, some well implemented and some poorly implemented - I don't think it matters to them - anything that will suggest a reason to purchase or upgrade the software. How easy the software could function on a day to day basis seems to be never given a thought.
Secondly Quicken expects your purchase of this software to be the first of many purchases from them. New business owners often will need expert help to set it up. Quicken, will of course, provide you with the name of a certified Quickbooks consultant, who for a fee, will set up the software. The software now comes with an on screen tutorial that may help some new users but it seemed less than complete.
New business owners should test all competing software to see what works best for them. Quickbooks is not bad software but it doesn't seem to evolve in a manner that is really sensitive to user's needs.
New users should also be aware that Quickbooks update feature routinely downloads very sizeable files that seem to do little if anything. A high speed internet connection is strongly suggested.

Microsoft Office 2000 Premium Review

(More customer reviews)This is kinda a must have because you could just get stuck without spell check on Wordpad, and if you ever read e-mail outlook is just great to have. Other than that, I kinda bought this for FrontPage 2000 and Word 2000 just cause those are my most frequently used programs.
If you ever get a chance to use Microsoft Publisher, I think you should cause it's been around for a long time and you can do just about anything with it from newsletters to business cards to calendars and greeting cards. It's Great. FrontPage is a little to outdated to use now but it still has the great ability to have your FTP/web server always seen and drag and drop is cool aswell.
As for Excel, it is the leader in spreadsheet technology and if you know how to use all the codes and stuff you can get a good job somewhere.
Access is the database program. You could basically run an entire company with this set of programs.
And databases would be cool to in multiuser over a network.
Bottom line is it works with Windows XP Service Pack 2. So your in for good luck. Not sure yet about Vista. I haven't tried it myself.

(More customer reviews)I've been a heavy Office 2004 Excel user for the past two+ years. I was severely disappointed when I installed Office 2008. Microsoft elected to omit functionality that is core to being productive in Excel - solver support, data analysis, Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), and more. If you rely on Excel to do any type of business analysis or are a student that will require access to data analysis tools (regression, histograms, distributions, etc.), you will be SOL with 2008. I highly recommend that you avoid Office 2008.
Office 2008 is so incomplete and unsuited for professional work that it prompted me to write this review, which is my first.

Well Microsoft, never being one to miss an opportunity, has delivered the full Office Suite for Mac and designed it to take complete advantage of OS X. What that translates into is simply the best Office Suite experience anyone can have.
All the apps (Word; Excel; PowerPoint; Entourage) are included unencumbered and many have features and enhancements that can ONLY be found on the Mac. Excel features customized keyboard shortcuts and the ability to create transparent charts. Word now features easy one button access to all your contacts in Entourage as well as the handy Data Merge Manager. PowerPoint now allows movies and features full compatibility with QuickTime. The layout and feel of Entourage is much improved over it's PC counterpoint Outlook.

Microsoft Office 2000 Professional Review

I am guessing they meant to put (OEM Version) on the description. I had every reason to expect I was buying a retail package. This software transaction was illegal.

TurboTax Business Federal+ e-File 2010 Review

(More customer reviews)Loaded program, as I have for the last few years, and transferred prior year info. Hit continue and the next screen is nothing and it will not let you save. Message says it is a known error but they are not giving a fix. Restarting and rebooting does no good. For now this program is worthless!
Please note that I have many years of experience with software and taxes using many different programs. This failure by TurboTax seems unreal.
Update on January 18, 2011: I have now received and email from the Project Manager for TurboTax Business saying they plan to make a fix available by January 24.
Update #2 on January 24, 2011. I am pleased to say "score one for TurboTax" based on downloading todays update, transfering my prior year data, and being able to save - it appears they fixed the error that occured when trasfering your prior year amounts. I still need to actually complete the tax return but expect it to go well, the same as it has for the past three years. Other than the delay TurboTax caused me, I can now reverse my earlier comment calling the program worthless.

Microsoft Visio Professional 2002 Review

(More customer reviews)The newest version of Visio is the first version built completely by Microsoft since the product was acquired. It's a part of the XP family of products and an official member of the Office XP family.
Sporting the XP interface it has features that I am excited about: (1) Professional and Technical versions are combined. You get IT and facilities diagrams and wizards in the same package. (2) You can create diagrams that can export properties to XML. The possibilities are endless: exchange product data with suppliers and customers based on your own product's attributes, export bill of materials to ERP systems, manage assets and get control of total cost of ownership and export process model data to other tools. (3) You can directly scan images or download photos from digital cameras into Visio and use the new photo editing tools to enhance or modify the images to suit your needs. (4) Analyze your web site and develop a complete report of all links. A powerful feature is spotting broken links, making this a good tool for your quality assurance group.
I do not like the possible "gotchas" in the web link feature. Specifically, When you type a hyperlink in a Microsoft Office XP application (of which this version is a part), it has been reported that the application will alter what you've typed, without notifying you or giving you an opportunity to undo the "correction." Not good.
Before making a purchase decision there are issues and factors that you need to consider very carefully. As part of the XP family of products, Visio 2002, like the XP operating system and Office family, will require activation over the Internet once it's been installed. You can bring it up and use it 5 times before activation, but after that it will not work. This is Microsoft's defense against piracy, and at first glance is a sensible scheme. However, if you reinstall it you have to call Microsoft and get instructions. This is NOT a sensible scheme for a number of reasons. First, I travel, and sometimes outside of the country. Calling Redmond is not viable if my system crashes and I need to reload applications. Second, if I want to upgrade my hard drive I cannot simply reinstall this application (or any of the "XP" family applications or operating systems) because when I first activated it there is an entry made in some database somewhere that says this application is already installed and cannot be activated again. The solution is to call and have some unknown drone bypass big brother. What is this going to cause me in lost productivity?
If you need the features (and they are compelling) and can live with the possible web link problem and licensing and activation issues, then this is a worthwhile product. Think long and hard about the issues part, though, because it has ramifications that can be much more serious than I've described. On the other hand, perhaps a wave of good sense will descend upon Redmond and they come up with a more workable solution that shows they care about customers and understand stuff like total cost of ownership and the value of productivity.
Personally, I am passing this one by (along with the other XP products) until/unless there is a better way to recover from disasters like hard disk crashes or upgrade my system without the barriers that have been placed by the vendor. My productivity and sanity is worth more to me than the new features. You have my opinion and must decide for yourself.

(More customer reviews)As a Vista-fugue, the main reasons for even bothering with a `Bootcamp' Windows installation were Microsoft "Office" and Intuit's "Quicken/Turbotax", both richer-featured in their PC than in their Mac releases. Disappointingly, iWork '08 'Pages' performed better as an image-based page layout package for the multimedia center crowd, proving woefully underpowered in a professional business office ... crippled by the tediously awkward conversion hassle from *.doc to *.pages documents.
No more! With iWork '09, Apple has virtually erased any remaining barrier to business office `switchers' still on the fence. I have explored and tested Pages '09 since its online release as a downloadable fully functional 30-day trial demo. I was so impressed with the new Pages (as against the flashy eye candy of the '08 version) that I ordered the full boxed version. [The trial software is well worth a test run to see if iWork meets your needs.) The new Pages now easily exports a document in doc, txt or pdf format, and does a remarkably lifelike transformation of even highly complex Word documents, tables, lists, or legal briefs with a mere double-click or drag-and drop.
Rather than spreading myself too thin, I limit this review to `Pages', leaving commentary on `Numbers' to spreadsheet buffs ... `Numbers' capabilities, in the past, were no match for the depth of MS-Excel. If `Numbers` performs as well as `Pages' in this iWork overhaul, then the product will be the best eighty bucks gift for your Mac. `Keynote', an image-with-outline presenter's tool, probably will prove at least the equal of MS-PowerPoint considering the Mac's flair for spectacular graphics.
`Pages' well may be the impressive turnaround software that elevates the Mac from multimedia center toy to serious professional business status. Highly recommended for Vista-weary PC users and Mac loyalists looking for a solid business suite. The detailed crystal-clear manuals and crisp `Help' replies are welcome value-added resources.

Microsoft Student with Encarta Premium 2008 Review

(More customer reviews)I've been using Encarta along with Britannica for years. I once believed that for overall depth of content, the higher mark would go to EB. But with regard to software ease of use and organization of material, Encarta would always get the nod. Not so anymore. This new version is a step backward compared to earlier years and seems to be plagued by its own desire to be both a great encyclopedia/dictionary and a homework aid for students. In the end, it achieves only a mediocre showing in both categories.
Just as an example: the new dictionary looks better and has two new tabs for translations and verb conjugations, but performs poorly compared to the 2006 version, in my opinion. It is now almost incapable of recognizing certain word inflections as typed. As an example, take the word "intoning", a present participle of "intone". Well, if you type it in to the dictionary, it will not be recognized as a word...even though if you look up "intone", you'll find the present participle form listed there. So in order to get a match, you must type in the basic form of the word in most cases.
However...some words, such as "intoxicate", have separate entries for other forms (in this case, the present participle "intoxicating"). I don't recall this idiosyncrasy in the 2006 version of Encarta dictionary. In that version, any inflection you typed in would lead you back to the basic form (e.g., present indicative) definition. This new dictionary is actually fairly annoying after a few days of working with it.
It also seems that some words were completely dropped. For example, "reenact" isn't a word from Encarta's perspective. You won't find it under that listing, or the hyphenated "re-enact". But you can find it in Merriam-Webster and practically every other dictionary on the planet. It's almost like they abridged what Encarta had in earlier versions. The weird thing about it is that you can find the word "reenact" in the Thesaurus and Verb Conjugation tabs...but not in the dictionary. What's up with that? Did Microsoft lay off their software testing team?
Perhaps there's some logic to it all. But in my opinion, it comes across as sloppy and not very helpful. I once used the little Encarta icon on my task bar every day. Now I'm opting for Britannica 2008's Merriam-Webster component instead. Oh well, it seems that some good things come to an end through unnecessary tinkering.

Corel Home Office Review

(More customer reviews)I was a little taken aback by the packaging of this product. It comes in a box like any other software package, but inside the box was a small instruction brochure, and another package which contained the program on a USB flash memory stick. No discs. At first, I didn't get it, and then I realized they mention netbooks a lot all over the (too large) package, and realized this was a marketing decision to get their product "in" with the netbook crowd; No need for an optical drive with the USB stick.
And it works as advertised. Plug in the USB stick, and you get the typical Windows "what do you want me to do?" prompt. Use Autorun and it installs Corel Home Office in no time at all. While I'd prefer a disc, I can live with this media, too.
Unfortunately, the "for netbooks" philosophy didn't stop there. One installed, running the program within Windows 7 on a regular 15" notebook computer was a disappointing experience. The program works well enough, and seems to handle MS Office files with no real problems; However, it has the annoying habit of opening in it's own non-Windows styled window, and anchoring itself to the upper left corner of the screen. This small window remains the same size, and will not allow resize, reshape, or any dimensional changes. Selecting "Full Screen" just makes everything in the window fill that window. It's as if they decided to completely disable the ability to run this well on anything with a screen resolution higher than 1024x768. I couldn't drag the window using standard Windows interface functions. It even lacks a proper window frame, and has no buttons for minimize, maximize, and close window in the upper right corner, like EVERY WINDOWS PROGRAM EVER.
What were they thinking?
I can't see using this on anything other than a netbook, unless you like your office documents to be anchored to the top left corner and want to get used to a completely new interface. It's a shame, too, because I like the actual program; It looks good and works well with documents. It's just a pain in the neck to use because of the lack of comprehensive view/layout controls for the windows themselves. Any self-respecting office suite should at least allow me to put the window in the middle of my screen so I'm not looking up in the corner of my large monitor.
I get that they're aiming for netbooks more than standard desktops/laptops, but why can't they do both? Why does the interface have to be so... Limited?
If you have a netbook, I imagine this is awesome, and I'm hanging on to my copy to put on the netbook I will inevitably be getting somewhere down the line... But as an MS Office replacement, this falls woefully short on anything bigger than a netbook. Call me confused, but I don't see the logic in ONLY supporting 1024x768 screen resolution, and I'm a bit miffed that the box says "optimized for netbooks & compact PCs" but fails to say anything about how "optimized" really means "only meant for" and mentions nothing about how you're completely unable to resize or move windows, even if you DO have more screen real estate to use than on a netbook.
Get it for your netbook and you'll probably love it. Do not bother trying to replace MS Office with this on a full-sized computer, though. It's not meant for that, and pretty much fails to be user-friendly.
I do wonder if all this is just an issue with Windows 7, which I'm running. If so, consider the rating to be one star higher. However, considering that Windows 7 is due to be the de facto OS on PCs two months from now, I don't think it's a good sign that this sort of thing could happen with a new product.
