QuickBooks Invoice Manager 2010 Review

I wanted more information about this software but I was unable to find it on Intuit's site. I contacted Intuit and they said Intuit has discontinued selling and support for the standalone version of Invoice Manger. They said this was included in QuickBooks. QuickBooks is way more than I need.

Quicken Rental Property Manager Review

Quicken Rental Property Manager
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been managing rental property for about 15 years, starting with 2 buildings and 10 units at the beginning and now with 25 units in 5 buildings, containing a mix from studios and 1-bedrooms up to 4-bedroom apartments.
I recently decided to update from a very old version of Quicken, and since they had this program specifically for rental properties, I thought I'd found a perfect match. I couldn't have been more wrong.
You would think that a company that has made accounting software for this long would understand the most basic needs, like a running total alongside each transaction (which even my 7-year old edition of Quicken had). Nope. There is only a single running total. Make a mistake, and it is virtually impossible to backtrack and find. How about a field for your check number, the singular way to identify your checks/transactions? It doesn't have one. One of the 8 or so automatic fields they do give you is unit number. Problem is, it's a simple numeric assignment based on the number of units you input when you create each building's account, and it can't be altered. Apartments lettered instead of numbered, numbered in partial sequence, alpha-numeric, by floors, cardinal direction, etc? Tough luck. These are just a few of the problems or basic design flaws I've come across. It took several painstaking hours to transfer the entries from my old software and books into this new software, and now I'm stuck until I either find the time to transfer the data to something I trust, or I continue to use this program until the end of the year. It's half baked, and that's putting it lightly. I wouldn't recommend it for even the most entry-level rental property owners or managers. I can't imagine a big firm using it. Regular quicken costs half as much (though even that's getting horrible reviews on Amazon). The previous reviewer said it's no better than a simple excel spread sheet. I'd go further and say it's worse. Save your time and money, and just create a simple excel file.

Quicken 2005 Deluxe Review

Quicken 2005 Deluxe
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you have the 2003 Deluxe version stick with it. It is the last Intuit version worth using. I regret upgrading to 2005.
When installing Quicken 2005, it removes Quicken 2004 from your system, converts your data and you will not be able to go back. If you do decide to upgrade, make sure you make a backup - you will want it.
(...)
Intuit's claimed benefits for Premium are misleading - nothing of particular value is offered.
The "over 100 enhancements" they claim to have made to 2005 are nebulous and difficult to find. Subjective as well.
I am a professional financial advisor and have helped people for years with their use of Quicken. Out of concern, I persisted and actually manged to get through to a manager in product development on the telephone. She was surprised I got through- and she was too busy to talk with me as she was getting ready to leave for the weekend.
I have several sugestions for upgrading the product and expanding their market- but since they don't matter to Intuit- no need to bore you with the details. You would never see them anyway.
The qif problem is real. They are pitting their customers against the finance industry. It doesn't look like a work around is in the near offing. I looked at Money several years ago and thought it was way below the quality of Quicken. I haven't been back since but have now re-thought. Quicken should talk to the Work Perfect people about competing with Microsoft- uh I mean Word What or something like that? Let's see - they didn't listen to their customers either - then of course there was Lotus 123 - but I don't remember what that was for......

QuickBooks Pro 2007 for Mac (Mac) Review

QuickBooks Pro 2007 for Mac (Mac)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I originally purchased QuickBooks Pro for Mac (version 4) back in the '90s because I was impressed with the ease and intuitiveness of Quicken and wanted something just as easy (within reason) for my business. After using QB for a year or two, I was very disappointed to hear Intuit had discontinued the QB for Mac product.
Fast forward a few years. After a temporary slump, the Mac is back on top with new and innovative products. I'm in love with my new PowerMac that significantly boosts my productivity. And I'm still stuck with an aging QuickBooks.
Like other "fair weather friends" who abandoned Mac and then returned when it was hot again, Intuit decided to release an all-new QuickBooks for Mac Version 5. This one would run under the new Mac OS X! And... that's about it. While Windows users benefited from several years of upgrades and new features, the "new" Mac version did not.
One of the advantages of using QuickBooks is the ability to bundle up your files and send them to your accountant for review. But not if you were on a Mac. Nope. Unless your accountant also had the Mac version, you were out of luck.
Intuit expected us to be all excited over running QB under OS X and more than willing to pay full price for the privilege. That's right... no upgrade pricing. I couldn't see shelling out a couple hundred bucks for the same tired software with some lipstick slapped on it.
So I stuck it out with QB4 running under Classic OS9 while Intuit released new versions each year. Each one having only a subset of the Windows version features. Each one requiring you to pay full price to upgrade.
I finally broke down and purchased QuickBooks for Mac 2007 for these reasons:
* I decided it was time to upgrade the rest of my
apps to native OS X and stop using Classic.
* QB for Mac 2007 finally added the ability to
fully customize forms.
* QB for Mac 2007 finally had a usable ability
to bundle up and share records with an accountant
using the Windows version.
* My only other alternative was switching to a
competitive application that was more expensive
and more difficult to use.
As much as I wanted to switch to another vendor, I relented and stayed with QuickBooks. And it works OK. The "Layout Designer" is awkward, but at least I can now make my invoices, etc. look as professional as the rest of my business.
But when I decide to expand my business beyond myself, I'll have the problem of how to share QuickBooks with others... it still doesn't allow multiple user access, while the Windows version has for years.
And get this... QB for Mac 2007 still does not have a timer feature so you can accurately time hourly work and add it to your records. I have to time my labor externally and manually add it into QB. The Windows version... you guessed it. Intuit claims there is no demand among Mac users for this feature. Considering how many creative professionals use Macintosh and charge by the hour, I find that hard to believe.
As long as Intuit treats the Mac community like a bad smell from behind a couch, I will be on the lookout for a better product to replace QB. For now... it will do.

QuickBooks Point Of Sale: Basic Version 8.0 Review

QuickBooks Point Of Sale: Basic Version 8.0
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I helped my wife set up this POS software for her retail store. We wanted barcoded inventory control and good integration with QuickBooks Pro (financial).
Despite the fact that we have a graduate degree in computer science, and experience with accounting, we spent many long nights fixing problems and bugs in this software. Our expectations were pretty low based on reviews we had read--but this software has been much worse.
To add insult to injury, you're constantly given pop-up ads trying to sell you additional Intuit features. Less insulting is the well known fact that some important features are disabled in the Basic software and you need to upgrade to Pro to do things like editing the layout of price tags.
If the software crashes on you (and I personally guarantee it will), and you call support, they will tell you you need to buy a support contract. When your system is down due to their incompetence, this is a big insult.
The software would be workable if it was stable. Intuit needs to halt adding new features to this software, hire a better software team, and just spend some time stabilizing the product. It is to flaky for production use. Here are maybe half of the bugs we have ran in to:
- Rename company file, rename back, deletes all your backups
- End of day Z-out and drawer count. choose Custom time period, choose time. That time becomes default for any subsequent "Today" Z-out reports. Drawer is off. If you run "Custom" again with correct time and date (today, 12-12), it then ignores the deposit so your drawer is off again next time you do a regular "Today" z-out drawer count.
- Warning about QBF has changed to new company file is not dependable--- we got our warning a week later after we noticed it ourselves and used QBF to compare the two files (which must have triggered the late warning--which was then triggered multiple times, clicking OK 3 times in a row still did not allow end of day financial data exchange to proceed--had to cancel and try again).
- Popup dialog "Problem: some of your changes are still being updated. Solution: Please wait for the dashboard to complete the update and try again". Cannot close POS, thus cannot reboot cleanly. May need to kill process.
- Credit card processing stopped working suddenly. multiple days of many hour calls with SW tech support in India did not resolve problems. Staff left our computer firewalls open, changed our company file and generally messed things up. Reconfigured all windows networking, killed POS SW, rebooted, and days later it started working again but cut out once and required another reboot.
- When entering credit card information manually, sometimes you can enter a voice auth. number and bypass network authentication, other times you cannot. Seems to depend on which order you click on fields in the GUI but it really works only randomly.

No matter whether you are a current user or interested in becoming a new user, you may want to try this program out, before you buy it.
Microsoft has on its website a 60 day trial version of Money 2004 Deluxe. This should give you enough time to try it out. Since the file format changes every year you won't be able to use the Money 2004 file in your current Money version, if you're a current user, so either do double maintenance with both programs for a while or determine very quickly, if the new version is worthwhile getting.

I have used Quicken for years and am totally addicted. If you don't have Quicken at all, then I highly recommend this product. If you have Quicken Deluxe 2000 or 2001, though, this update is basically useless. It even has most of the same bugs. I could find very few new features. Most of the listed improvements are really just links to the Quicken website. The business features are incredibly weak. For example, you can only print an invoice with pre-set columns. There is no way to add an item description or change the format in any way. Overall, Intuit didn't put much effort into this update.

Intuit will no longer support the payroll portion of this product and I had to re-order through an online customer service rep when I was having difficulty with the payroll portion. I had to remove the product and download a new Enhanced payroll and then mail back my copy to QB for a refund. Then it was more costly for me with postage return and a new product price, etc. They told me I would get a refund from QB but time will tell. You should not sell a product that Intuit will not support.

Quicken Premier Home & Business 2006 Review

Quicken Premier Home and Business 2006
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My previous financial software upgrades were from Quicken 99 to Quicken 2002 and then to Quicken 2004 Premier Home & Business only a few years ago. However this Quicken Premier H&B version 2006 upgrade was the easiest I have done so far. After putting the CD in the drive and clicking "install" it found the older 2004 version on my Windows XP system it told me that it needed to remove the older version. I said "yes" and it automatically removed the old and installed the new without any problems and then proceeded at my request to back up and convert my older data files. If you are familiar with Quicken Premier H&B 2004 or 2005 then you will be familiar with this Quicken 2006 interface because it looks and feels mostly the same. However at the same time everything in this newest version also seems much more refined since they seem to have fixed many little annoyances and yet added some clever features that make the experience of using the it even more easy to use. As your read about these differences on the Quicken web site or on the retail box I can tell you that you may not fully appreciate these improvements until you begin using the new version "hands on". Even the online automatic download and account update features seems to run smoother and faster. Intuit has listened to many customer requests by adding things such as being able to attach a document image to your registry entries, the ability to expand to full screen mode by pressing F11 on the keyboard, the inclusion of more choices for your advanced reports, and the ability to export report data to a "PDF" or "Microsoft Excel" file format.
For users of Quicken before version 2004 you will want to back up all your previous version's data files onto a removable media or disk and make sure you have the original installation disks from your previous version since you will want to make sure that you like the newer 2004 through 2006 interface. Users of versions 2004 or earlier who rely on the QIF file format for your financial institution downloads should realize that QIF data files are no longer fully supported in this version (or in version 2005) as working data files. This is an extremely important point to make so I will repeat once again that you absolutely need to make sure that you completely back up those data files on a removable CD, zip, floppies, etc. so that you could go back to your older Quicken if you really needed to later on. On a positive note Quicken version 2006 does however allow you to import and export your data as QIF data files but you will have to convert and keep those files in the newer "QDF" format before you can use them in this new version 2006. For Quicken users who do not rely on the older QIF files you will appreciate the reliability and simplification of the newest Quicken file formats. Whether you use "Web Connect" or the more automated "Direct Connect" methods the newer file download format seems more secure, more automated, and more trouble free. Many download bugs that were prevalent in previous versions seem to have been fixed. I did have to do some manual editing for a few minor accounts where the online downloading feature had stopped working in version 2004 but after some simple online settings changes those same accounts were now suddenly working perfectly in version 2006.
PROS: Easy installation and upgrade, works reliably, very easy to use, mostly bug free, the financial data downloading works very well, full of many useful new and improved features including a method of registry image file attachment and an improved importing and exporting of data for advanced reports.
CONS: It does not fully support the older QIF data file format. Users of versions before 2004 will need to acclimate to the newer look and feel of the program. Some users from previous years have reported data corruption or errors after updating to the newer versions of Quicken 2004 & 2005 which means that fully backing up your existing data files on a removable media before the installation of Quicken 2006 is mandatory.
CONCLUSION: I enthusiastically recommend and give the highest possible five star rating to the latest Quicken Premier Home & Business ver. 2006 Edition since it is the easiest, most reliable, and overall best version of Quicken I have ever used!

Quicken Home & Business 2009 Review

I've used Quicken for 15yrs+, buy every major upgrade. But this one has no new significant features, it adveritses some, but they don't stand out. I think there might be some extension of current features, but it's not changed my organization or advanced my reporting or insight in any new ways. I would not buy this particular upgrade had I known how insignificant this upgrade is for current users. I gave three stars because overall Quicken is still a GREAT product, just a useless upgrade for current users.

QuickBooks Pro 2004 Review

New features lured me to upgrade from QB 2001. The ability to email documents caught my attention. I discovered that the email feature in PDF format only utilizes Intuit servers so you keep no copy of the email note attached and Intuit now has yours and your customer's email addresses. In addition you have to register to use their servers and they need your telephone for all their associate businesses. Hope you have plenty of time for talking to solicitors because that is what you do if you enter your telephone number which you have to do if you want to utilize the email feature. Read the privacy statement and you will likely not care to use the feature. I don't know how they have the nerve to call it a privacy statement. QB software now over-rides Windows color scheme and forces you to use a pukie green header on each window. I just noticed another printer installed called "Intuit Internal Printer". I'm not sure what that is about. I've seen several pop up advertisements in the software. I recommend disabling the automatic updates or you will be bombarded with pop ups. Other than that, Intuit needs to take an ethics course. Everything I had before upgrading seems to function so I'm thankful for that.

Quicken Personal Finances 2007 for Mac Review

Quicken Personal Finances 2007 for Mac
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've used Quicken for Windows since 1994 and have been quite pleased with it. I've updated every few years, and am currently using Quicken 2005 Deluxe for Windows XP on my PC. I have no major complaints about the Windows versions that I've used.
Last year, I bought my first Mac (the last of the G5 iMacs). I fell in love with it and I now use it for everything except finances. My Mac came with a free version of Quicken for Mac, and I assumed that I'd just be able to start it up and have instant access to the Quicken data on my PC over my home network. However, Quicken for Mac would not recognize my Quicken file, nor would it restore the backup files. So I assumed that this was because it was some sort of free stripped-down trial version that had expired, or something like that. I therefore recently purchased the latest and greatest version of Quicken for Mac (2007), assuming that this would do the trick and that I could finally junk my rusty PC.
WRONG.
The full-priced "full-featured" 2007 version of Quicken for Mac wouldn't read my existing Quicken files, either. So I looked in the instructions and found a blurb about converting a Quicken for Mac file to a Quicken for Windows file, but found nothing about converting from Windows to Mac.
I had to search the Quicken website to find a document explaining how to convert a Quicken database from Windows to Mac. It quickly became very clear that if you're a long-time user of Quicken for Windows and you want to convert to Quicken for Mac, you're basically screwed. Unless, that is, you've only been using Quicken for a few simple tasks such as balancing your checkbook. If, like me, you have multiple investment accounts of various types with records going back many years, you might has well forget about converting to Quicken for Mac.
For starters, it turns out that there are a lot accounts and reports that simply won't convert at all, so you'll just have to lose those. For example, Quicken for Windows handles 401(k) accounts (a fairly common type of account). Quicken for Mac does not. So you can kiss your 401(k) data goodbye. Same with Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable (fairly common things for those of us with home businesses). Same with Memorized Reports, Security Price Histories, etc.
If you decide that you can live without such things, you can proceed with the adventure of converting your Windows data to Mac data. Note that no conversion utility exists, so you have to do an enormous amount of hand-editing of the database.
The conversion process requires that you go through all transaction categories supported by the Windows version and look for those with names longer than 15 characters. The instructions don't make it clear whether a blank space counts as a character, but I assume it does. You're supposed to rename these categories to bring them within the 15 character limit. Quicken 2005 for Windows has at least one such category that cannot be renamed (Quicken simply won't let you do it). The others can be renamed, however.
Then you have to rename any accounts that are longer than 15 characters.
Then you have to edit your securities list to make sure every ticker symbol is all-caps.
Then, if you have a mutual fund account that contains any RtrnCapX transactions, you have to change that mutual fund account to a regular investment account.
OK, now you've done all that. The next step is to go through all your accounts one at a time, look at each transaction, and manually change the categories for certain transactions. There are 7 transaction types that exist in the Windows version but not in the Mac version. For example, MargInt (margin interest expense) does not exist in the Mac version, so you have to find every single margin interest event in your records and manually change it to a miscellaneous expense, with a note in the comment field that it's for margin interest. Then you have to do similar conversions for the six other transaction types that aren't supported. For example, every MiscIncX transaction has to be manually changed to a combination of a MiscInc and an XIn. If you have multiple accounts containing more than a decade's worth of transactions (as I do), this becomes a formidable task.
There's more to do after this, but this was the point at which I threw up my hands and decided that it's just not worth it. I'd have to hand-edit hundreds of transactions in my Quicken database and hope that I got them all right. Then I'd have to live with a version of Quicken that lacks many of the features to which I've become accustomed over the years.
Quicken offers an option where you can send them your file and have them convert it for you, but they won't convert the non-supported transactions to supported ones. So, for example, you'd simply lose all records of your margin interest expense. They claim, however, that they'll arrange things so that the correct balance is preserved in each account even though all those transactions will be missing. How nice. And if you want to use their conversion services, you have to go through a lot of rigamarole just to get them to do it.
So, I'm stuck with a useless piece of software that I downloaded from Intuit's online store for $60.
Looks like I'll have to keep my PC running until I get an Intel Mac that will allow me to use Bootcamp. Also, rumor has it that the Leopard version of OS X, when running on an Intel Mac, will allow you to run Windows XP applications directly under OS X (without rebooting and without emulation), but this is still just a rumor.
This experience has left me with a very low opinion of Intuit.

Microsoft Money 2007 Deluxe Review

Microsoft Money 2007 Deluxe
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Microsoft has recently launched the 2007 version of their Money product. Money 2007 (M2007) Deluxe has been available as a trial version on Microsoft's website even a week before the official version was available in Retail Stores. I strongly advise everyone considering a purchase or an upgrade to take advantage of this Trial version, before buying the product. It is good for 90 days and has few limitations.
I have been using Money 2006 (M2006) Premium which is essentially the same as M2006 Deluxe, execept for some special offers. I installed M2007 and told it, NOT to remove my M2006 installation. Since M2007 upgrades the data file to a new format that is incompatible with earlier versions of money, I made a copy of my data file to be used with M2007, so I could still access my data through both versions. When I started M2007 for the first time and selected the newly made copy of my data file, M2007 converted this file to its new format without any problems and saved a copy in M2006 backup file format.
Overall M2006 and M2007 are extremly similar. Looking at the kind of things I use Money for, there is NO difference whatsoever. They both have the same minor shortcomings/bugs and their behavior is indistinguishable from one another. I do not download online statements, so I cannot say, if that area has been improved. Also M2007 has a new kind of "Spending and Savings budget" feature, which is the only noticable change compared to M2006.
All things considered, M2007 does not add much (if any) value over M2006, so I will only give it 3 stars. If you haven't upgraded in a while, consider M2007, since it seems at least to be stable (which couldn't be said, i.e. for M2005). If you haven't used Money before, then M2007 seems like a good version to start. But don't forget to try before you buy! Go to Microsoft's website and search for the Money Trial version.

QuickBooks Pro 2005 Review

QuickBooks Pro 2005

I've been a QuickBooks fan since starting up my company and realizing how much of a tremendous help QuickBooks was. I started out with QuickBooks 2003 and just a little while ago, I thought it was the time to upgrade to the latest and greatest. Well, I have to warn you that the latest, isn't the greatest. I still like QuickBooks 2003 much better, and in fact I sold my copy of 2005 on eBay and am continuing to use 2003. A lot of really handy features were removed from 2005, and many of them were the best features, like the E-Filing and E-Pay. I think I'm just going to stick with my current version of QuickBooks until Intuit gets on the ball again and puts these features back when they release 2006.
