Intuit QuickBooks Point of Sale 2011 - POS v10.0 Basic New User Software Review

Intuit QuickBooks Point of Sale 2011 - POS v10.0 Basic New User Software

I am so sorry I ever bought this software.
I helped my wife set up this POS software for her retail store. We wanted barcoded inventory control and good integration with QuickBooks Pro (financial).
Despite the fact that we have a graduate degree in computer science, and experience with accounting, we spent many long nights fixing problems and bugs in this software. Our expectations were pretty low based on reviews we had read--but this software has been much worse.
To add insult to injury, you're constantly given pop-up ads trying to sell you additional Intuit features. Also, some important features are disabled in the Basic software and you need to upgrade to Pro to do things like editing the layout of price tags. This is actually required to get them to even print right on some printers.
If the software crashes on you (and I personally guarantee it will), and you call support, they will tell you you need to buy a support contract. When your system is down due to their incompetence, this is a big insult.
The software would be workable if it was stable and did what it advertised. Intuit needs to halt adding new features to this software, hire a better software team, and just spend some time stabilizing the product. It is to flaky for production use. Here are maybe half of the bugs we have ran in to:
- Prints barcodes too small (way out of spec for most readers) on Zebra zlp 2824 plus printer (officially supported, according to intuit). Their response: upgrade to Pro so you can use label designer. This is classic bait and switch. (Contact me if you'd like to share legal expenses and go after them on this).
- Rename company file, rename back, deletes all your backups
- End of day Z-out and drawer count. choose Custom time period, choose time. That time becomes default for any subsequent "Today" Z-out reports. Drawer is off. If you run "Custom" again with correct time and date (today, 12-12), it then ignores the deposit so your drawer is off again next time you do a regular "Today" z-out drawer count.
- Warning about QBF has changed to new company file is not dependable--- we got our warning a week later after we noticed it ourselves and used QBF to compare the two files (which must have triggered the late warning--which was then triggered multiple times, clicking OK 3 times in a row still did not allow end of day financial data exchange to proceed--had to cancel and try again).
- Popup dialog "Problem: some of your changes are still being updated. Solution: Please wait for the dashboard to complete the update and try again". Cannot close POS, thus cannot reboot cleanly. May need to kill process.
- Credit card processing stopped working suddenly. multiple days of many hour calls with SW tech support in India did not resolve problems. Staff left our computer firewalls open, changed our company file and generally messed things up. Reconfigured all windows networking, killed POS SW, rebooted, and days later it started working again but cut out once and required another reboot.
- When entering credit card information manually, sometimes you can enter a voice auth. number and bypass network authentication, other times you cannot. Seems to depend on which order you click on fields in the GUI but it really works only randomly

Norton Internet Security 2006 Review

Norton Internet Security 2006
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Late last year when my subscription for updating "Norton Antivirus 2005" was about to expire, I decided to update my software to the more complete "Norton Internet Security 2006" in the belief that this would be a superior overall product with the addition of a personal firewall and a spam-blocker bundled with the latest version of NAV (Norton Antivirus). For many years, I had been using ZoneAlarm (ZA) for a personal firewall, so before NIS (Norton Internet Security) could be installed, ZA had to be uninstalled. Once installed, NIS appeared to work very well for about two and half months. Then, I started to notice several problems: other applications were running more slowly and it was taking an increasing amount of time to turn my PC off. Then, not long thereafter, I started to notice more troubling issues with NIS: namely, I had scheduled it to run NAV once a week to do a complete virus scan on all of the files on my PC. When this scheduled task would begin, it would stop functioning after checking about 25% of the files on my PC. The window that would appear during the weekly-scheduled virus scan would remain open, but there was no update to the number of files being scanned and the hard-drive on my PC was not in use indicating that NAV had frozen. If I attempted to shut down the weekly scan, the window would close, but it would then become impossible to start a manual virus scan without rebooting because NAV would report that a scan was already in progress. After rebooting the PC, which was also highly problematic as several NIS files would not shut down (including one called "ccApp.exe"), I could start a manual virus scan, but it would result in exactly the same frozen result as with the automatic weekly virus scan. The PC shutdown problem always occurred whether or not a scheduled or manual virus scan had been initiated. It would take at least 5 minutes for my PC to shutdown. The first file that would not shutdown was Symantec's file "ccApp.exe". After the shutdown window was acknowledged to end the locked file, the PC would remain in a frozen, pre-shutdown state for several minutes before several other frozen files also finally shutdown.
Having previously installed the 2003 version of "Norton Systemworks" (NSW) several years ago, I attempted to use that application to repair the problems that I was observing with NIS. However, this had no affect. I then considered upgrading NSW to the 2006 version, but when I saw the number of negative reviews describing numerous problems associated with that product, I decided against it. I then also decided to see what others had written for reviews for NIS 2006 and NAV 2006. For both of these products, the reviews are predominantly negative as well.
Being a software engineer myself, it is my opinion that Symantec is no longer sufficiently testing its software products before releasing them for sale to consumers. Many people (myself included) have maintained a high opinion of Symantec's NAV application because previous years' versions have been highly stable and reliable. However, the obvious lack of sufficient testing by Symantec for the 2006 versions of NAV, NIS and NSW have changed that opinion. It is clear from my own adverse experience with the 2006 versions of NAV and NIS, as well as many other people who have had bad experiences with these products, that the 2006 versions of NAV, NIS and NSW are unstable and unreliable. Given the fact that NAV 2006 would always freeze when attempting all of PC's files, there is no actual guarantee that it was actually scanning live internet activity to ensure that no virus, worm or trojan horse could infect my PC.
Finally, after attempting to improve the situation by shutting down other automatically loaded applications upon boot-up to no avail, I decided that the only solution was to uninstall NIS, including its bundled NAV. Upon doing so, my PC no longer operates at a snails pace and it shuts down within a few seconds (as it had always done prior to installing NIS 2006). I then installed McAfee's antivirus software (not the bundled version) and reinstalled the latest free version of the ZA firewall. It is obvious that Symantec has transformed its once very reliable and stable NAV into an unstable & unreliable piece of bloatware that will greatly diminish system performance and integrity. For this reason, I have no choice but to rate "Norton Internet Security 2006" with 1 star. If you are considering purchase of this product, I would highly advise that you first investigate other vendors' similar products. I would also advise that you don't necessarily purchase a bundled application, which may have similar bloatware problems as Symantec's "Norton Internet Security 2006".

Oh my... I brought this product so I can do slideshows on a VCD with the "proper beat" of the background music but apparently it does not recognize my Dell CDRW drive.
1. Ask for a Trial. This thing does not have a trial version.
Now I'm stuck with a product that can't can't recognize my CDRW.
Note: Most of my other software like Roxio, iTunes, Windows Media Player can "see" and burn with my CDRW. This is the ONLY product i've used that can't.
2. Support Sucks! - Go to their website. They'll convince you to use their website to look for support even though it's useless.
They responded to me with a "generic" email instead of trying to help solve my problem. Still waiting for a simple question of "Do you support my CDRW" drive?". Try calling their support number (not even an 800 number) and they still try to push you in using their website.
Again, to avoid getting stuck with something useless, don't buy unless they can give u a "trial version" like some of the "real" big companies like Jasc Photo album.

I spent three hours helping a friend uninstall norton systemworks..He thought he could install this over norton nis2006 !!Wrong!! these programs arent compatible with each other..Both have versions of noton anti-virus 2006.!!! you cant run both...They fought each other until he got a grey screen.Nothing worked!!! I had to perform a clean windows install, and installed norton 2005 antivirus and the 2005 norton firewall...Now all is well...? we have to wait 15 days to see if the registration fails...You install at your own risk...Upgrading is not always better...You be the judge of this.

Roxio Easy Media Creator 8.0 Review

The DivX feature has been a big improvement. There are movies and video clips which I downloaded and now can burn them onto an DVD. Then I can play the newly created DVd onto my DVD player and watch on my tv. This will be really helpful when more studios make programs and movies available through the internet. I then combined several older DVDs onto one DVD with Creators new feature. I've also been doing this on my laptop which is a few years old. I thought I needed to upgrade my pc but so far the program has been working well.

Pinnacle Studio 9 Upgrade from Previous Version Review

Pinnacle Studio 9 Upgrade from Previous Version

I was excited to upgrade from Studio 8 to Studio 9, but in doing so, most of the original transitions that I had were now considered "pro" or "pro plus". I also find this program harder to use instead of easier. I tried to contact the Pinnacle people but never received a response. I don't understand how a company can take away something that I already had on a previous version. I plan on uninstalling 9 and reinstalling 8 to see if I can get all my original transitions back. Even my previous movies now have watermarks of "Pro" or "Pro Plus" on them! Another example of Company Greed! Don't waste your money.

3D Hunting 2010 MBX Review

3D Hunting 2010 MBX

The moment I put in the disk I knew I'd been screwed! I run most of this type of game on a laptop, and it wouldn't even install! Reluctantly I switched over to my desktop, and after fooling with the files for awhile, it finally played. The first fault of the game is that nowhere, I mean nowhere, does the company think to mention that you are a poacher! I don't mind slight gaps in realism, being able to shoot more animals than legally allowed, etc; but poaching? I bought this game to be a hunter, not a criminal! Even putting this aside, the game has horrible gameplay, it's 3rd person, and not just that but a horrible third person. You are in the middle of a hunt and you can just magically teleport back to your base camp. The guns are poorly modeled, and out of 16 weapons, there may be 4 different sounds for them. 26 animals? Only if you count the male, female, and young as 3 different animals! The missions are nearly impossible too. The game is simply a bad looking game from an amateur company. It plays bad, is overpriced, and will do nothing but dissapoint you. For the same price you can get a Hunting Unlimited or Cabella's game. You'll be much better served by either one. Do yourself a favor and stay away from this!
