Kiplinger's WillPOWER Review

Kiplinger's WillPOWER

I am pleased with much of this product so far, but I am dissatisfied that it does not work with Windows 2000. It is great for preparing a basic will. It also offers many other legal documents. I especially like the Living Trust for establishing a plan for your children they lose both parents. There is another product called Kiplinger's Home and Business Attorney, which retails at [$]. It seems to include the WillPower functionality as well as much more. I might recommend that you consider it instead.

The forms can not be printed with blank lines to allow users to enter information on a printed copy. Some documents are very crude and do not include any professional formatting (no headers to identify the document). This looks like Windows 3.1 software! It does not allow long file names and does not allow users to create folders when selecting "File - Save As". The most professional part of this software is the installation utility!

Quicken WillMaker Plus 2009 Review

Installation was very easy on my Vista PC. Laws continue to change, so I like the availability of free legal updates through 2009.
I have already created several documents. The process is very easy. Documents you need to complete are suggested based upon your answers to a few simple questions. Documents are tailored to your home state. Help and examples are available at every step. The interface is basic, but effective.
The program actually goes beyond estate planning, to include personal finance and home/family documents. My software came with a nice 200 page YOUR LITTLE LEGAL COMPANION paperback, and a free 500 page PLAN YOUR ESTATE e-book.
I can see why this is America's #1 estate planning software. I highly recommend this software.

Product may be OK but I will never know. Could not get it function although it installed perfectly. Broderbund is immpossible to contact if you have a problem. Their software support (Encore) does not have an 800 number and you can hang on long distance for an hour before talking to someone.
Frustrated and waste of time due to Broderbund lousy support.

Quicken Willmaker Plus 2007 Review

Quicken Willmaker Plus 2007
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a fan of Nolo's Quicken Willmaker product. It helps you create your own estate planning documents as well as a few simple general legal documents. It's very easy to use, and works in all states (except Lousiana, where the estate planning documents created in this software won't be legal due to that state's specific drafting requirements).
There are a few things you should know, however, before purchasing the software.
First, Amazon also sells a book-CD version called Quicken Willmaker Estate Planning Essentials which combines a full book on estate planning with a full version of the Willmaker Plus software, and it sells for much less than the software alone! It's just a much better deal. Just search for "willmaker" in the Book section. (Note: the 2007 version, which is the one you *should* buy, is slated for release Oct. 30, according to the product page on Amazon.)
Second, the 2007 edition of the software gives you updates and tech support through the end of 2007. While you can create and modify and print and export documents created in Willmaker 2007 for as long as you own the software, you won't receive any updates beyond December 2007. If your state's estate planning law changes in January 2008, for instance, your will and other Willmaker-created documents *might* become outdated and no longer of legal value. Herein lies an interesting question, almost a catch-22: you bought this software to avoid the service of a lawyer, but in order to ascertain whether your documents will remain in legal force in the future, you may need to consult a lawyer! Of course, you can always opt to get the 2008 (and 2009 and 2010 and so on) versions. If Nolo continues to market the Estate Planning Essentials bundle for thirty bucks each year, you may still end up saving money upgrading each year rather going to a lawyer. (E.g., $30 a year times 30 years comes to less than $1000, cheaper than engaging a New York City or San Francisco lawyer for three hours!) My take: unless you live in a state that constantly alters its estate planning laws, you will probably be safe with just Willmaker 2007 and upgrade occasionally in the future, especially when your life situation experiences a big change. (For example, if you are married and, God forbid, divorce in 2011, you can skip editions 2008-2010 but do upgrade to the 2011 edition when you re-plan your estate.)
Third, while the software itself is easy to use with its step-by-step guide (and if you get the cheaper book version mentioned above, it's even better!), getting all the information you need about yourself (assets, beneficiaries, etc.) is actually quite a time-consuming process. Taht's why again I recommend the book-software bundle; it tells you what you need to do before running the software to write your will. Otherwise you'd be surprsied at how much prep work you'll actually have to do before finishing even a simple will!
One last thought: because this is self-help software, while many people will find it adequate, you may still want to talk to an estate attorney. For one thing, a legal will requires witnesses, and you might just as well pay your attorney and his assistant to act as your witnesses, if you don't want your friends or relatives to know what's in your will! For another, estate laws are getting more and more complicated, and vary by state, so a local attorney is still BY FAR the best and most reliable source and a competent attorney will provide invaluable services that no self-help software can offer. That said, I do recommend this excellent program (esp. the cheaper kit) for those obsessed with self-help and/or those looking to save money. (Yours truly belong to both types!) Besides, the Estate Planning Essential Kit, which I think is just GREAT, can educate you on the various topics in estate planning, so even if you choose to hire a lawyer, you'll talk smart and know what he or she is doing with your will and your trust.
(Again, Louisiana residents should seek an attorney's help. This software, or any other estate planning software I know of, won't work in your state.)
No adult with children or property is too young to start estate planning. However you choose to proceed, good luck!
[Disclaimer: This review, originally written Sept. 18, 2006, was updated on Oct. 9 after a Nolo representative e-mailed me about my misunderstanding of the software's update/upgrade policy. Also, please note that I'm *not* a lawyer (not even a law student!) and cannot offer any legal advice; please do not e-mail me with your legal questions.]

Quicken Willmaker Plus 2010 Review

Quicken Willmaker Plus 2010

I purchased Quicken Willmaker 2010 only because I read in several sources that Willmaker includes features for creating Living Trust and AB Trust. I decided to pay more money to get the latest version (2010). Imagine my disappointment when I found that in version 2010 Intuit removed all features for creating Living Trusts! Not they decided to charge more than hundred bucks online for a simple trust document. Finally I bought the older Quicken Willmaker 2009 and yep, now I can create trust documents.
Intuit already has bad reputation for forcing people to upgrade, removing some features, making new products more complex because of continually rewriting their product to justify selling new upgrades every year. But this dirty move with Quicken Willmaker was the last straw. I fail to understand why would anyone introduce a newer version of a commercial product only to provide less value and to sell online services for 3x more money!

Quicken WillMaker Plus 2011 Review

Quicken WillMaker Plus 2011
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This program contains some excellent resources for estate and end-of-life planning and could save you considerable money in legal costs. I have some experience in this field from the professional end, and I know that simple wills can be a lucrative proposition for attorneys. Quite often, it's a simple matter of plugging in the names of the beneficiaries and printing them off. No reason to pay an attorney to do this if you can do it yourself. (That said, if your situation is complicated, you need to hire the professional. Better that you spend the money now than leave your grieving family to work it out after you die.)
I have Windows Vista, and it installed painlessly. I had no trouble with launch, answered its questions to see what documents it recommended for me and drew up at first a simple will--leaving everything to my husband or, if he predeceases me, my son; dividing my properly unevenly among my family if my son also does not survive me. The only hassle here is in the uneven division. It says it does the math for you, but that's not exactly true--it totals it, yes, but you still need to be able to work out that so-and-so gets 1/9th while somebody else gets 1/6th. It's probably a whole lot easier if you divide it evenly, but there are some in my family who need more and some in my family who deserve more. Fortunately, I can still manage my basic math. The will it produced in this case was just fine. Too, the program offers good information in its sidebars and provides easy access to usage guides online. (It even prompted me to name a guardian for my dog--a nice touch.)
When I was finished, it asked me if I would like to produce the same will for my husband--a nice feature. I didn't have to go through the process a second time.
After that, I went back to make things more complicated by leaving specific bequests--handy if you want your Aunt Sally's china to pass to cousin Gertrude. It performed well here, too.
Since I was testing this product for Vine, I also poked at some of the other documents provided. It's really comprehensive, from direction for somebody taking care of your elderly relatives to authorization for somebody to take your child out of the country, from instructions for your housesitter to a "notice to put name on do not call list", there's a whole suite of useful documents in here, all very thoroughly explained and simple to use and print off. Moreover, with internet connection, it promises to offer any legal updates necessary to keep me up to date legally through the year.
Along with this package comes a free copy of Your Little Legal Companion: Helpful Advice for Life's Big Events from NOLO. I have nothing but respect for NOLO, but their definition of "legal" is pretty loose here. There's some good legal advice, to be sure, but at a random page opening (p. 151), I see the following tips (for travel): (1) contact your embassy in case of trouble; (2) bring toilet paper; (3) send postcards; (4) be careful with the food and bring Pepto Bismal; (5) get last minute information on U.S. international travel advisory and (6) don't worry that your dog will hold a grudge against you for being gone. This may all be good advice, but not much of it is legal. The book is full of this kind of thing. It's an entertaining read, but pretty light on law.
It also included a free download of Nolo's Encyclopedia of Everyday Law: Answers to Your Most Frequently Asked Legal Questions. Updated in 2008 (at least, the copy I downloaded), this book does give a pretty comprehensive overview of the law and some good, common sense suggestions for getting by in legally challenging environments: buying or selling a house; getting along with your neighbors, landlord or tenants; operating effectively when working for yourself or others; filing patents, etc. This book is a good added value, even if it is a digital copy, and it manages to remain highly readable even in discussing the law.
Overall, I think this package is a very good value and likely to be quite useful to individuals who want to draw up some of their own legal documents. You'll still need to follow some formalities on your own (for instance, my state requires two witnesses and a notary public for many legal documents), but you may save considerable money over attorneys fees, and if your needs are simple that's worth it in itself. The additional books are a nice touch, even if one of them is pretty lightweight legally.
