When I tried to load WinDVD 8 I received 18 error messages about not being able to load some .dll's. After it finshed loading I tried to run the program and it gave me an error message that it was unable to run the program. I tried to load this copy of WinDVD 8 on three different computers and all gave the same error messages. I downloaded a trial version from InterVido's web site and it loaded and ran OK. I contacted InterVideo about the problem and their service rep said it was a problem in the installer program that was on the CD. The InterVido service rep. said they had corrected the problem in the WinDVD 8 program that you can download from thier web site. This is a problem with InterVideo's WinDVD 8 CD and not with Amazon.com.

PowerDirector 5 Review

I'm a Pinnacle Studio 8/9/10 refugee (avoid at all cost!!), who tried PowerDirector 5 out of desperation. Thankfully, PowerDirector 5 software works quite well. The software is generally solid, has good performance, and you can really get work done. The functionality is quite good, though the user interface is a little quirky and takes a little while to get used to for a former Pinnacle user. The software is *quite* efficient at getting miniDV movies on the computer, it appears to be multi-threaded and can efficiently download data and recompress it into .mpg files simultaineously - even when running in non-real time mode. It is at least 3-4 times faster at this process than Pinnacle software (which completely copies the raw miniDV files onto your computer using multi-gigabytes of storage and then goes back and reprocesses the data into .mpg, which takes forever). The capture clips are clean. I haven't yet tried many of the advanced editing features of the program, but I'm really happy that the basic functionality of getting raw mini-DV footage into good quality .mpg files that are smartly divided up into seperate clips, can easily be edited, and rendered onto DVDs. In a couple of weeks of using this software, I've managed to catch up to 3 years of miniDV tapes that hadn't been processed because of the nightmare of using Pinnacle 8/9/10/10.1.PowerDirector is not perfect, I have experienced a couple of crashes in 30 or so hours of processing -- I've learned that after rewinding a miniDV tape to the start to let it play for a second or two before starting the capture process because the program will hang if you try to capture from the very start of a tape - not a big deal once I figured it out. Bottom line, I've been able to get everything I set out to do done with a minimal amount of dupicate effort. My productivity at getting miniDV tapes processed with PowerDirector 5 is somewhere between 10 and 20 times better than it was with Pinnacle Studio (PStudio has very bad performance and severe stability problems).Suggestion: it would be nice if the software would name captured clips with a datecode (shooting date, not capture date!)like YYYYMMDD(XX) instead of the default capture(XX). I've found that the only way to be able to reasonably manage a lot of video clips is to manually rename the clips with the date the video was shot on. Can't the software do this for me? If you do captures from different tapes shot over a long period of time it will result in duplicately named files by default (though you can change the default, you can only give every clip on an entire capture the same name -- since I use the same tape over a long period of time for multiple events, giving every clip off the tape the same prefix is not that useful). If the software used the shooting date as part of the name, you wouldn't have duplicate file names and you could easily seperate the clips from Thanksgiving from the clips from Christmas just by looking at the names of the files!

honestly, i had no problems making dvd backups of my dvds. i travel regularly and would rather take a copy with me than the real dvd. imagine losing a movie overseas and having to pay $20-$30 for another copy of my movie. one note, make sure you download the plug-in otherwise it will not work. if you're using it to make movie copies for your ipod, beware, the copy i made had a problem syncing video with audio. the audio was a couple of seconds slower than the video so it looked like a badly dubbed video. also does NOT work transferring subtitled movies to your ipod.

Abbyy FineReader 5.0 Pro OCR Review

Abbyy FineReader 5.0 Pro OCR
Average Reviews:

I scan books that are in the public domain, which is a demanding task for OCR software. The bottom line is that the Abbyy FineReader Pro v5.0 is THE BEST OCR software on the market right now. It far surpasses Scansoft's Textbridge Millennium. The only thing that even gives FineReader Pro 5.0 any competition is Scansoft's OmniPage Pro 11, but FineReader is still far better. Since Scansoft bought out Textbridge (from Xerox) and bought out OmniPage (from Caere), you would think they could develop a superior product, but that's not so. Omnipage appears to be billed as an upgrade to Textbridge (I'm guessing that Scansoft is sending Textbridge to the graveyard). Scansoft claims in an advertisement that they spent a YEAR combining the programs. However, Scansoft did not even include rudimentary features of Textbridge in OmniPage 11. For instance, if you scan a book two pages at a time with the binding flat against the scanner (this is very common for older books that need to remain intact), Textbridge Millennium could split apart the pages using a dual-page mode. This was an extremely helpful if not critical feature for scanning books. However, this feature does not exist in OmniPage 11. FineReader on the other hand, can do this and more. It works great with Auto Document Feeders and it is far more accurate than OmniPage 11. Finally, FineReader's error/spell checker is once again far superior to OmniPage 11. The only single advantage that OmniPage 11 has over FineReader 5.0 is that it can import Adobe PDF documents for further OCR work. Otherwise FineReader Pro 5.0 is the way to go.
Also, regarding a former review, FineReader allows you to exclude optional-hyphens in the output file. Check in the advanced section of the output format. Including them is not a mistake. It's actually quite impressive that the program knows those that are optional-hyphens and those that are not.

Music Creator 2 Review

Music Creator 2
Average Reviews:

I have to agree 100 percent with the reviews below: This software was written without any consideration to the end user. Just getting the thing to make a sound--any sound at all--is a major undertaking. Instead of just programming the junk to use your soundcard, it is made so that it will remain mute until you search out the soundcard manually and inform the software to use it. Each and every @!?%$#@*&!!!! time you copy or create a track, you have to tell the software AGAIN to use the soundcard. I'd love to get an explanation from the manufacturer as to why this is--were they under the impression that some users would want to program music and then NEVER LISTEN TO IT?!?!?
There are 4 or 5 possible 'views' of each tune on this software, but the layout, and the archane instructions that come with the software, could lead you to believe that that is really an astronomical figure. The guide book is written in an amazingly, astonishingly complex manner, making it virtually unuseable.
I've had the software 3 weeks and have yet to get a second's enjoyment out of it. I've played music all my life and have done some composing on my computer before, but I can say without a shadow of a doubt I will never--NEVER--get any use out of this overly complex piece of junk. Everything about this appears to have been overdone by software engineers looking to impress other software engineers, with no thought of any kind given to the end user or how the software would be used.
A complete and total waste of money. I'll never buy anything from Cakewalk again. Never.

Nero 7 Ultra Edition Enhanced Review

I've used Nero since Version 5. So upon installation on my Vista Home Premium system, the interface was familiar and easy to navigate. All the functions I want to use are there and seem to be working just fine.
I've read complaints here and elsewhere that Nero 7 takes over your system. It's important to be careful about which components you install (you can always add a component later). Also, and this is critical, they give you the option as to which files you want Nero to open by default. I simply deselected all of them. If I want Nero to, say, open a jpg file, I'll use the "Open with" command. I also did not install any program icons on my desktop. And to avoid installation problems, be sure to turn off any antivirus software and any other programs you have running (like it says in the manual). If you have earlier versions of Nero installed, be sure to remove them first before you do anything else. I did all of that and it was a very straightforward and easy installation. The only really annoying thing was, at the very outset of the installation, they give you the option to install "Just Ask". It's easy to miss, and I don't want it. So be sure to look for that and deselect it if you don't want it.

Roxio Easy DVD Copy Review

Roxio Easy DVD Copy

About the worst product I have ever purchased for my computer. I wish I'd read some reviews first.
It basically locks up in Windows XP when you insert a commercial DVD. Not only that, but you cannot kill it through the Task Manager (if you run Task Manager before starting Easy DVD Copy) - and even worse, you cannot invoke Task Manager after starting Easy DVD Copy and it locks up. You cannot even shut down or reboot at this point. You have to pull out the power cord from your computer to get Roxio to stop running.
So, this is about the most inexorably invasive non-functioning program I've ever run on XP. The only DVD I could copy was the DVD the program was distributed on. I hope I can get a refund as it's really worthless.

Roxio Easy Media Creator Suite 9 Review

Roxio Easy Media Creator Suite 9
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Before buying I downloaded some demos and liked the roxio program. Here's why.
I'm just okay at troubleshooting pcs so I feel that this program was made for someone like me. I don't want to degenerate other programs cause I don't know them so well. But I found them to be very technical and I didn't understand all the terms. Roxio is easy to understand and I could do things very quickly. I will admit that my husband takes care of the technical parts like installation and the XP fixes. I can't say anything about those things but the program has worked without trouble for me.
I wanted to learn how to fix photos and make slide shows, especially since we have a big family reunion coming up. I'm not doing special effects but I am cropping and fixing a lot of the red eyes. I also have some 5x7 and 4x 6 photos. I wanted to put them all in the same size and there is a menu item that will change a lot of photos at once. I didn't have to go to each photo and make the size change. The slide shows are incredibly easy to make. Instead of one long show I've opted to make several, categorized by decade. That way I could add different music to each show. I also like the way the program pans and scans. You can really see the photo instead of it just whizzing by.
Of course I need copies to give to everyone. I used the disc copy to make several discs. Many of the older people don't use computers much but they all have dvd players. The program makes such dvds. My husband said that the slide show is really a video so I can send it to my ipod. I plugged in the ipod and chose the video file. It did move to the ipod and I didn't have to do much. And since we will be making videos of the reunion, I will start learning how to use the video editing programs.

Nero 6 Review

Nero 6
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I switched from Adaptec/Roxio software about two years ago, and have never looked back. In fact, I'm so far removed from Nero's competitors that I can no longer provide a survey for comparison. I don't think it's necessary, either: Nero does for CDs, DVDs, and audio-video files what Microsoft Office does for documents and spreadsheets. Everything.

Nero burns CDs and DVDs, extremely well and with a feature-set largely unmatched by its peers. You can read RAW, write RAW, create bootable CDs and DVDs, burn a variety of image formats, create images for later burning, and so on. The interface is intuitive and customizable, and you'll find a way to do nearly anything you can imagine with respect to transferring data to blank media.

If that was all Nero did, it might not be a bargain at its current price, but it would still be the best tool for the job. So Ahead bundles it with a packet-writing tool called InCD, which makes rewritable DVDs and CDs look like hard drives. Then Ahead bundles Nero Recode, and you know you've got something special.

Recode will take a DVD and copy it, either in user-arranged pieces or entirely. It will not copy protected DVDs, but if your DVD content is unprotected, Recode will let you resize it to fit on a single 4.7Gb disc, or split a large movie over multiple discs. You can even set menus and titles, and create master images for later burning. Recode is extremely easy to use, and one of the best DVD utilities today.

Ahead isn't finished yet. Also with the bundle are speed tools for checking your drives; an Image tool that will mount saved image files to appear like virtual drives; a cover designer for the jewel cases; a WAV editor with some fairly hefty ability; a mixer that allows a user to pull together multiple sources into remixed output; a DVD-SVCD-VCD- player; and a VCD/SVCD tool to convert movies to popular compressed formats.

What I'm trying to tell you, gentle reader, is that even if your PC shipped with Roxio's software, you should buy this bundle and use it. It is updated quite frequently -- updates free within the major version -- and its abilities will unlock a great deal of the power of that PC you have.

Installing this program on a computer running Windows XP a HUGE problem. After installing Window gives the message that the software will cause Windows to become unstable, and that Windows prevented the drivers from loading. Then sends you to Roxio website for patch. The patch did not work, and their support service provides a resolution that involves editing your computer's Registry, a task I do not want to attempt.
By the way, the only way you can speak to a live person is to pay $35 per hour, more than I paid for the program itself.
Totally frustrating software for XP.

PaperPort 12 Review

PaperPort 12

I'm a long-time PaperPort user, and I made the mistake of upgrading the the newest professional version last weekend. Like so many others, I'm now unable to scan to PDF format without the DocuCom Trial watermark appearing on all scans, which is flatly unacceptable. Nuance has a couple of lame "work-arounds" on the Web site, but they DON'T WORK -- at least, they've not worked for me. Even worse: their Technical Support doesn't seem to exist -- I reported the problem and requested a real fix a week ago, and I've still not heard from them. As an experienced user, I have a pretty high tolerance for technical problems and working through solutions; but I have ZERO tolerance for a company that's known for over a month the program has a fatal flaw yet continues to sell that product.

Yes, this is Vista Home Basic, you get what you pay for, a very good operating system without a bunch of eye-candy using up system resources, which makes it a good choice for an older computer upgrade or building your own system. You just have to ask yourself if you really need Media Center, DVD Maker, more Windows games or the RAM devouring Aero Glass desktop look. If you look around there are free DVD makers, free games and probably free substitutes for Media Center. But if you are going from XP to Vista I do recommend a clean install of Vista instead of upgrading XP. So it's your choice if you want Vista Basic or Vista Ultimate Bloatware.
