Apple Logic Studio Upgrade from Logic Pro or Gold Review

Apple Logic Studio Upgrade from Logic Pro or Gold

If you've been using Logic 7 for a while, as I have, and then go through the hours of install (Literally) you'll find a different layout and another steep learning curve, though much is simplified from the earlier version. There are also some bugs in this upgrade, which Apple seems to have overlooked even in their updates. Some files depend upon GarageBand and are missing, if you try & use Logic 7 files you'll find 8 unable to always supply files to match it. This has caused me hours of frustration. Hence the 3 stars. Not a seamless upgrade, to be sure.

Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Special Media Edition Upgrade Review

Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Special Media Edition Upgrade
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My installation of Office for Mac 2008 upgrade moved along smoothly. I was concerned at first about whether the installer would remove my previous version of Office (Office 2004), since there was no message displayed, but the prompt did come later. The installer did not remove my previous Office Open XML converter, however; and of course I needed to remove the old aliases in the Dock (which were now non-functional). The installer was kind enough to add new icons to the Dock, however.
The upgrade software found my previous version (Office 2004) promptly, and didn't hassle me with product activation, which I was glad for. It also stored duplicate fonts in a separate folder and told me where that folder was located, rather than just overwriting or deleting them - another politeness.
The printed "Install Guide" that was included with the package, however, was pretty well a waste of paper and a no-brainer, as it offered nothing above and beyond what the average user would already know; i.e. stick in the disc and follow the instructions. I was pleased, however, that Microsoft trimmed down the packaging - Office 2004 was shipped in a huge and bulky plastic bubble case, with a hard-shell plastic CD case inside of that, and all wrapped with more plastic, whereas Office 2008's more modest paperback-sized lightweight box shows more environmentally-friendly (and space-saving) thinking.
It goes without saying that a full install of Office 2008 for Mac does require 1.1GB of hard drive space and a DVD drive, as opposed to the 630MB/CD-ROM install requirements of Office 2004. (These MS apps are really packing on the pounds...)
As for Expression Media, which is an image and photo management app that is bundled with this upgrade set, the installer worked fine, but the app was not added to the Dock, and I had to find it myself in the Applications folder. Expression Media asked me to import my iPhoto library as an Expression Media catalog, but the photos were not imported and I heard several hundred Mac warning sounds (seriously) that indicated the operation was unsuccessful. Expression Media didn't seem to understand what was going on, and thought that the photos had been catalogued, which they were not. (Admittedly, not a good first impression.)
Upon opening the Project Gallery, I found that Office had forgotten my recently used Office files, unfortunately. I also had to manually change the default application that runs the new .docx, .xlsx, and .pptx formats as well. I suppose that this is a non-intrusive decision on the part of Microsoft, but it is a bit time-consuming to make the changes.
Running Office 2008 on a Mac mini (Intel Core Duo 2GhHz, 2GB of RAM) under OS X Tiger, I found that the overall performance of the Office apps are noticeably faster than Office 2004, which ran under Rosetta on Intel Macs. Startup time for each Office 2008 app is very good, and response times are generally snappy. The font menu, for instance, used to take considerable time to display all of the dozens and dozens of fonts I have installed, but Office 2008 now fairly well breezes through them.
The compatibility checker, which verifies and addresses possible problems in using PowerPoint presentations across the various PowerPoint platforms (Mac and Windows) and versions (97-2008), is thorough, if not time-consuming.
As Office is such a detailed program, and there are so many people from all walks of life who use its individual applications, it's hard to say in one go what the possible benefits and disadvantages of moving up to Office 2008 for Mac would be. The "My Day" floating calendar and task management tool, for instance, might be useful for people who want a PDA-like approach to desktop time management. I upgraded to Office 2008 this time because (1) the cost was inexpensive, and (2) I was getting tired of using the Office Open XML converter each time I wanted to open an Office 2007 for Windows file in Office 2004. However, for the user who just needs to create a few bread-and-butter documents, bang out some basic spreadsheets, or draw up a simple product or school presentation to show to an audience, there may not be a compelling reason to move up to Office 2008. In short: if you're happy with what you have, then why change it? (And why would you be here, if you weren't thinking of upgrading? ;-) )
This having been said, I can see that Microsoft's Mac BU has been hard at work on this, and it was about time for an upgrade. (I would recommend also checking out special offers for this upgrade product on the Mactopia site as well.) As for Expression Media, however, if you already use Adobe Bridge or iPhoto, you may not find much added value in Microsoft's Expression Media, although concept-wise they do differ, and Expression Media clearly has some strong points (the ability to catalog and preview media without actually moving it into a library, for instance).
All said, it's safe to say that Microsoft Office 2008 is a product to grow on.

Adobe Acrobat Standard 9 Upgrade Review

Adobe Acrobat Standard 9 Upgrade
Average Reviews:

The upgrade requirements aren't mentioned here, but according to Adobe's website you can upgrade "from Acrobat 6.x, 7.x or 8.x Standard".
The license allows an additional install on a laptop or home computer, provided you don't use that copy at the same time as the main install. From the license: "... the primary user of the Computer on which the Software is installed ('Primary User') may install a second copy of the Software for his or her exclusive use on either a portable Computer or a Computer located at his or her home, provided that the Software on the portable or home Computer is not used at the same time as the Software on the primary Computer ..."
The product requires activation, which includes sending license information to Adobe.
According to Adobe's website, it is OK to move the software between computers you own, but you need to manually deactivate the software on the old computer before the move. You can launch deactivation using the Help/Deactivate menu item. (You may need to wait a minute or two after Acrobat starts before this menu item appears.)

QuarkXpress 5.0 Review

QuarkXpress 5.0
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pay no attention to the catty doom-sayers: QuarkXPress is here to stay. Quark is too firmly entrenched in the collective consciousness of the computer community at large, and has too many diehard loyalists, to go quietly into that good night, just because a certain monopolistic competitor is banging loudly at the gate. The demand for Version 6, released in June, is phenomenally high. The reason is elementary: Quark is the best LAYOUT program - an all-important distinction - available, period, and has been since the dawn of desktop publishing.
My personal experience with Quark goes back to 1993, when I started a home-based advertising agency specializing in Yellow Page advertising. Quark was the first program I loaded on my then-formidable Macintosh Centris 610 (which nowadays sits on a couple of cement blocks out in the yard). I had never touched a computer in my life before then, but I felt an instant rapport with Quark, whose logical interface brilliantly exemplified the "your computer is your desktop" metaphor. (I might add, before starting my business, I had been a "paste-up artist" for nearly ten years, working with X-acto knives, layout boards, art wax, etc. It was easy for me to make a seamless transition from these tactile tools to Quark's virtual workspace.) To those who find Quark "non-intuitive," "non-user friendly," "frustrating" and "difficult," I politely suggest, perhaps you are in the wrong business. I've found Quark to be the polar opposite of these pejoratives.
For ten years now, Quark has been my primary program AND my favorite one. No exaggeration: I could not have survived the text-intensive world of the Yellow Pages without Quark's peerless typographical capabilities. I use Quark not only for my bread-and-butter YP work, but for virtually every print need imaginable: forms, labels, brochures, newsletters, calendars, greeting cards - you name it. For business correspondence and for creative or leisure writing (including all my Amazon reviews), Quark is also my chosen collaborator. After ten years, we're inseparable.
Sure, Quark has its quirks - I defy you to name an application that doesn't. (For instance, whenever I collapse a window in Illustrator, my G-4 freezes. I've never been able to figure that one out.) Considering the myriad of GREAT things about Quark, I prefer to think of its occasional lapses as the entertaining skulduggery of cyber-gremlins, no doubt playing pool with all those ones and zeroes. I never get bent out of shape over Quark's idiosyncrasies, because these, too, shall pass with a little sweet-talk, patience and tinkering.
I will never throw Quark over for Adobe InDesign for several reasons. One, I am too fond of and too loyal to Quark ever to betray my trust in the product. Two, I have nothing but admiration for the maverick Quark company, which has steadfastly resisted encroachments on its territory. And three, I have enough Adobe products already, thank you very much. I like them well enough, but I will not put any more money in the coffers of a humongous company that enjoys quite enough dominance already and has no business trying to rope and tie my favorite maverick.
It's important for desktop publishers and other professionals to have choices that don't include Adobe in their titles. For me, the only choice is QuarkXPress.

QuarkXPress 5.0 streamlines print, Web, and PDF workflows by importing and exporting documents in dozens of file formats, including HTML and PDF, as well as XML format. The software's new tables tool sports typographic and image controls that create graphically rich tables in no time. With version 5.0, the QuarkXPress design environment gets Web savvy. Add drop-down lists, rollovers, hyperlinks, image maps, and metatags to your Web page designs. The product's powerful XTensions interface lets developers enhance QuarkXPress to meet the needs of unique publishing workflows, while its new License Administrator benefits publishers with multiple-seat installations by helping larger organizations share the use of a smaller number of licenses.

Adobe Pagemaker 6.5 Review

Adobe Pagemaker 6.5
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you need a basic desktop publisher, Pagemaker 6.5 is better than Microsoft Publisher ever will be. If you're not all that familiar with desktop publishing but you need to do it, here's some good information. When Pagemaker 6.5 was new, it wasn't the most advanced desktop publisher out there (QuarkXPress 4.0 was). When I was a student at the University of Missouri School of Journalism in the mid 1990s, MU taught Quark by first teaching us Pagemaker 6.5. Pagemaker 6.5 was easier to learn, and once we had the fundamentals of desktop publishing down with Pagemaker, then we were prepared to learn a more advanced package.
So even if you need the current version of Adobe InDesign, you could really do yourself a favor (and save a lot of money) by buying Pagemaker 6.5 first, spending a few months with it, and then purchasing the upgrade version of InDesign CS3 or whatever the current version happens to be.
And if you're contemplating buying Microsoft Publisher, don't. Buy this instead. Most of the things Publisher does to try to be easier just ends up getting in your way. Pagemaker is no harder to learn than Publisher, and while Publisher will treat you like a beginner forever, Pagemaker won't. Pagemaker is a professional tool that happens to be pretty easy to learn how to use, and once you know how to use it, Pagemaker treats you with the respect a professional deserves.

Quarkxpress 8 Upgrade for mac/win with int Designer Xpert Tools Review

Quarkxpress 8 Upgrade for mac/win with int Designer Xpert Tools
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been using QuarkXPress since 1994 and I would not be able to do a good job as a graphic designer without it. It is part of my layout arsenal including Illustrator and Photoshop.
I know that InDesign is also a great program but since I started with Quark, I'm staying with Quark as long as they continue to deliver a great piece of software.
The truth is, I looked into getting an Adobe Suite but Adobe did not make it easy or inexpensive to do so. I own 5 other Adobe products that are already included in the suites but I would have had to pay full price (minus $100) to buy a suite. $100 was the only break Adobe would give me as a loyal customer. So for a minimum of $1300 I could buy the basic suite. It just wasn't worth it since the only thing I didn't have was InDesign.
So, getting back to Quark 8.0 upgrade. I upgraded from Quark 7 because I purchased a new computer running Windows 7 64 bit. I wasn't sure if Quark 7 would be compatible but I decided it was just easier to upgrade and be done with it. I've had no problems running on 64 bit Windows 7.
There are some great new features (that really should have been part of the program to begin with).
1.) When you import a picture into a picture box and that picture is larger than the picture box, you can see the rest of the picture faded back (when you unselect the picture box, it goes away). This really helps in positioning a picture. Additionally, you can rotate and scale by grabbing picture corners.
2.) The tools/measurements have more options. For example, the measurements box now gives shortcut access to just about anything like alignments, tabs, runarounds, drop shadows, etc.
3.) Font choices in the measurements box actually displays a sample of the font.
4.) You can create a plain box. Not a picture box, not a text box, just a box to be used for fill or whatever. That box can later be defined as either text or picture.
5.) The object alignment options are now the same as Illustrator, flush left, flush right, center, flush top, flush bottom, distribute evenly both horizontally or vertically, etc. and are easy to get to in the measurement box.
6.) You can import native Illustrator (.ai) and Photoshop (.PSD) files although I try not to do this since I eventually go back to make them flattened files before publishing.
7.) It is much easier to edit shapes with the expanded Bezier tool options.
8.) Just about every tool has been enhanced with more options or more common options and shortcuts from other programs.
There are really too many changes to keep listing but Quark's website has a lot of detail as well. I'll try to come back and update as I come across new things or crash issues.
I have had just a couple of crashes in the two months I've been using it. They seemed to be related to text reflow and table editing -- two things that I had trouble with in previous Quark versions.
Other than that, I have had no trouble in setting up new projects, editing previous versions, exporting for print or navigable PDF's for online posting.
The thing that keeps Quark as an industry leader in publishing is the ability to manipulate type so precisely. That and the detail and flexibility in style sheets, master pages and 'find and replace' options.
I really think that Quark has taken a good product and brought it well up to speed with competitors in the industry. It is worth every penny to upgrade.

Microsoft Expression Web 2 Upgrade Review

Microsoft Expression Web 2 Upgrade
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a VERY basic web designer. I've modified my web site, designed by a professional 10 years ago. I decided I could now redesign my site with the modern tools available today, and I chose Expression Web because I had heard FrontPage was fairly simple. Expression Web does just that, and the price was just right. It has several nice templates you can use to create your modern "standards-based" site. The one big disappointment was the utter lack of any useful help. The online help is extremely basic without any explanation of features or description of dialog boxes. You have to buy some book that does this. I have found the "Visual Quickstart Guide" by Nolan Hester to be extremely useful, and inexpensive. It will at least get you started and explain some basic features of Expression Web. So, for a real neophyte, the product is very good, and does everything, and more, that I will need, and with outside books, will be just right for the price.
One thing that wasn't clear to me when purchasing this product. You only need "any version" of MS Office to install this "upgrade". The strip on the outside of the box says, "Microsoft Office (any version)". I did not have Front Page, I did not have Expression Web v. 1. I only have MS Office Home and Student 2007, and the product installed fine. So, for all practical purposes, if you have any previous MS Office, you get the full product at the reduced "upgrade" price.

Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Standard Upgrade Review

Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Standard Upgrade
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Acrobat 6 Standard" came bundled with my new PC. I tried it for a week but found myself disappointed with it for all the same reasons given in the other unfavorable reviews here--disappointed enough to remove it from my new PC and to replace it with the Acrobat 5 that I'd been using on my old PC.
I haven't much to add to what the other reviewers have said, but I'll go ahead and state the following:
6 is too different from 5 in its menu structure. The difference would be acceptable if the purpose were obvious--say, to make 6's menus better resemble those of other, high-volume applications such as Excel and Word. But the menu differences between 6 and 5 seem to be completely arbitrary.
Many of the sophisticated yet useful features that were standard in 5 are now, evidently, premium in 6. I say "evidently" because can I only assume that these features are available, at extra cost, in the Professional verion of 6. I think one such feature perhaps is "Tools->Locate Web Addresses->Create Web Links from URLs in text". I use that feature all the time in Acrobat 5, but I don't remember seeing it in Acrobat 6 Standard.

Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 Upgrade Review

Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 Upgrade
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I upgraded from Premiere Pro 2 to this version Premiere CS5. My review is based on the difference between these versions.
Premiere finally is a mature software. I was happy to use the Ultra Key, as it is much better than the chroma keys in the version I had. Adobe bought a software company in order to have this technology. Another difference I appreaciate is that exporting video is a lot easier now and less confusing. There are many other differences but that is what initially I liked the most.
I bought a new graphics card especially for this software because Adobe worked with Nvidia to create CUDA parallel computing architecture which enables dramatic increases in computing performance by harnessing the power of the GPU (graphics processing unit). My new card is a MSI N240GT-MD1G/D5 - Graphics adapter - GF GT 240 - PCI Express 2.0 x16 - 1 GB GDDR5 - DVI, HDMI ( HDCP ) at about $100 but CUDA technology cards go up to $1,500. If you are serious about editing in Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 Upgrade, you want to have the best CUDA enabled card you can afford. Perhaps they should be more clear about this in the specs and also someone complained that he didn't know it was 64 bit only. This is powerful software and it does best on a powerful computer. A 64-bit computer allows you to have more RAM. I have 4 gigs of RAM.
I am very happy with this program. If I had the money, I would get the best computer and graphics card for this.

Eliminate intermediate rendering when moving sequences into Encore, and easily hop between your edited sequence and After Effects. Paint, add text, and clone across multiple frames with new video features in Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended.
Encoding and delivery for viewing everywhere Reach audiences wherever they are, on whatever device they are watching video on. Batch encode in the background to a broad selection of web and video formats, and deliver DVDs, Blu-rays Discs, and interactive web-DVDs.
Direct-to-disk recording and on-set monitoring Manage your shoot more efficiently with Adobe OnLocation CS5, included with Adobe Premiere Pro. Record directly to disk and maximize camera image quality. Organize shots using metadata imported from Adobe Story, a new Adobe CS Live online service, and logged during the shoot. When you import the project into Adobe Premiere Pro, metadata from Adobe OnLocation makes it easy to create a rough cut. CS Live online services are complimentary for a limited time--visit www.adobe.com/go/cslive for details.
Efficient editing with metadata, from script to capture and delivery Use metadata added to clips during preproduction, on set, and in the edit suite with Speech Search to easily find assets and edit faster. Export metadata to make your content more discoverable and to help unlock new revenue streams.
Native support for DSLR cameras Edit video from the latest DSLR cameras, such as Canon 5D Mark II and 7D; Nikon D90, D300s, and D3000; and others. New native support means you never waste valuable production time transcoding or rewrapping and always have access to the original file's pristine quality.
Comprehensive production toolset Extend your edit suite to preproduction and delivery. Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 comes with Adobe OnLocation CS5 for on-set monitoring, logging, and direct-to-disk capture; Encore CS5 for authoring DVDs, Blu-ray Discs, and web-DVDs; and Adobe Media Encoder for batch encoding video to virtually every format.
Top new features of Adobe Premiere Pro CS5
Industry-leading performance with the Mercury Playback Engine The ability to edit HD and higher resolution footage in real time without having to first render it or lower its resolution by transcoding or rewrapping it with an intermediate codec is a post-production dream come true. Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 brings that dream to the desktop with the revolutionary Mercury Playback Engine.
The Mercury Playback Engine provides native 64-bit, GPU-accelerated support for Mac and Windows, yielding dramatic improvements in performance and stability. You can open projects faster, scrub through HD and higher resolution projects fluidly, and handle long-form content and effects-heavy sequences more reliably. Play through most common transitions and effects without waiting for rendering. Plus, you can usually see results instantly when performing tasks such as keying with the new Ultra keyer, applying Gaussian blurs and blend modes to footage, applying multiple color corrections, and working with numerous other effects. The Mercury Playback Engine also makes rendering for final output much faster than before.
The Mercury Playback Engine works hand in hand with NVIDIA CUDA technology that leverages the parallel compute engine in NVIDIA graphics processing units (GPUs) to solve many complex computational problems in a fraction of the time a CPU would take to perform the same task.
In addition, the Mercury Playback Engine takes multitasking to a new level. Utilizing the GPU to accelerate effects, rendering, and other processor-intensive tasks frees your system's CPUs to handle background tasks. The enhanced, native 64-bit system architecture in Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 lets you use all available system RAM (up to 128GB in today's computers), so you can run multiple software applications at the same time. This opens the door to powerful timesaving, multitasking workflows. For example, you can simultaneously edit a very complex, effects-laden project in Adobe Premiere Pro while your system's CPUs render an elaborate After Effects composition in the background.
If you're working on a computer or laptop that is unable to play back challenging footage such as 4K RED files or sequences with extensive effects, Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 includes the ability to adjust the playback resolution of your video in the Source Monitor or Program Monitor. Separate Playback and Pause resolutions give you more control over monitoring--with higher resolution footage such as 4K, you can set playback resolution to a lower value for smooth performance (for example 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, or 1/16 resolution), and set Pause resolution to Full. This allows you to quickly check the quality of focus or edge details when playback is paused--useful for when you don't have the luxury of an on-set HD monitor.
Expanded native tapeless workflows Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 builds upon the industry's best native tapeless workflow by offering new native format support for Sony XDCAM HD 50, Panasonic AVCCAM, DPX, and AVC-Intra. Native support for RED R3D files has been enhanced, and native support for video shot with Canon, Nikon, and other DSLR cameras added. These newly supported formats expand existing support for variants of Panasonic P2; Sony XDCAM, XDCAM EX, and XDCAM HD; HDV; and AVCHD.
Open workflows with Apple Final Cut Pro and Avid editing software Whether working solo or in a workgroup that's involved in a large multistudio production, industry professionals typically use a variety of production and post-production tools on virtually every project. Moving media and sequences between tools in complex production pipelines often requires format conversion, specialized plug-ins, tedious workarounds, or a lot of manual work to recreate elements that don't transfer. The ability to share projects and assets between Adobe Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro, as well as between Adobe Premiere Pro and Avid NLEs such as Media Composer, means you can share files and timelines without conversion or rendering, preserving commonly used effects and transition.
Faster editing with metadata Metadata plays an essential role in helping efficiently manage and locate media assets throughout the production process. It lets you automatically track crucial details such as where a clip was shot, who's in it, and whether you have the rights to use it in your project. Innovative new metadata features enable the new script-to-screen workflow in Adobe Premiere Pro, bringing new efficiencies to the editing and production process.
Metadata can be created automatically and supplemented manually at any stage of production. For example, at the start of your project, a script written with Adobe Story, a new CS Live online service*, captures vital information and stores it as metadata that can be imported into OnLocation. While you're recording footage directly to disk, OnLocation automatically captures all of the important metadata coming from the camera. Comments you make in the OnLocation Shot List are also stored with each clip as metadata. When clips are imported into Adobe Premiere Pro and other components of CS5 Production Premium, metadata is retained in each application.
During post-production, metadata streamlines searching for clips while you edit. With metadata, you can quickly locate media assets and clips by filename, date, time, camera setting (such as resolution or frame rate), shot location, or any information you've added to your asset or clip. And when you run Speech Search in Adobe Premiere Pro, you can transcribe spoken dialogue that is converted into metadata, making locating particular footage simple.
Cutting-edge storytelling with new Adobe Story (available separately) Adobe Story, a new CS Live online service* for scriptwriting, can help accelerate the process of turning screenplays into finished media. Available separately from Production Premium, the tight integration of Adobe Story with CS5 Production Premium extends the benefits of Adobe Story into broader parts of the production and post-production workflow.
Integration with CS Review Clients, project managers, and members of production teams don't always work in the same location, in the same city, or even in the same country. CS Review, a new CS Live online service*, provides a fast and simple way for teammates and clients to take part in reviewing video sequences, using just a web browser and easy-to-use annotation tools.
Thanks to its integration with Adobe Premiere Pro, unlike other services that offer online review of creative content, CS Review lets you publish a review to the web directly from within Adobe Premiere Pro. Encode sequences in the background and automatically upload them for review and collaboration. When comments are made by colleagues and clients viewing the content in a web browser, comments are dynamically captured and displayed directly in the new Review panel in Adobe Premiere Pro alongside the sequence they relate to. Jump directly to comments in the timeline to efficiently match feedback to specific elements and keep track of review comments in one location.
Because reviews are accessed simply through a web browser, CS Review brings your teammates and clients into the review process in near-real time. When you need to view or archive reviews offline, they can be easily saved as JPG or FLV files.
With CS Review, you can apply password protection to your content, and assign roles to determine who can create a new review, make and respond to comments, or just read comments. The ability to set deadlines, track reviewer participation, and view comments as they are posted help you further manage the review process.
Efficient production and tapeless camera support in Adobe OnLocation CS5 Adobe OnLocation CS5 provides an impressive array of production tools to help you shoot better and faster while saving time and money, both on set and off. New support for tapeless cameras extend the ways you can use OnLocation in your production workflows.
Spot problems in imported tapeless footage. Thanks to new tapeless camera support, you can use the comprehensive software waveform monitor and vectorscope as well as the audio spectrum analyzer in OnLocation to identify image and audio problems in imported files by quickly scanning your footage for audio pops, clipping, and video overbrights.
Streamlined encoding with revamped Adobe Media Encoder With the explosive growth of video on the Internet, there's been a massive shift in how people consume video entertainment. Whether you produce instructional videos, trailers for your independently produced films, or music videos for viewing online or on iPods, distribute your work on YouTube, Vimeo, or Hulu, or output it to broadcast playout servers, being able to efficiently deliver your content in a variety of formats is crucial. Adobe Media Encoder, a separate, 64-bit software application included with Adobe Premiere Pro CS5, saves you time by streamlining the process of creating multiple encoded versions of your source files and Adobe Premiere Pro sequences. Adobe Media Encoder features a more intuitive user interface, providing more visual feedback to help you work faster. Save time with the new ability to start the encoding process directly from Adobe Premiere Pro without going to the batch list. Set up multiple items for batch encoding, manage priorities, and control advanced settings for each item individually. Batch encoding lets you use any combination of sequences and clips as sources and encode to a wide variety of video formats, including FLV, F4V, Windows Media, QuickTime, and other popular codecs such as MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.264, and--new in Adobe Premiere Pro CS5--AVC-Intra and DPX.
Searchable web DVDs and other enhancements in Adobe Encore CS5 Adobe Encore CS5 software is a versatile, interactive authoring tool for video distribution that allows you to deliver your projects beyond DVD and Blu-ray Disc. In a single operation, you can easily turn your DVD and Blu-ray Disc projects into web DVDs that now include a search interface. The new interface gives viewers a more engaging experience by enabling them to search within a web DVD using keywords. During authoring, Encore automatically creates a search database using metadata from speech-analysis text, subtitles in timelines and slideshows, and menu and button names.

Laplink PC Mover Windows 7 Upgrade Assistant Review

Laplink PC Mover Windows 7 Upgrade Assistant
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I found Laplink's PCMover Upgrade Assistant to be extremely helpful and certainly well worth the price. I was able to upgrade an older laptop (Gateway M320) from Windows XP Prof. to Windows 7 Home Premium with relative ease. That's not to say that everything was perfect but initially I thought I was going to have to upgrade to Vista and then to Windows 7 to do an "in place" upgrade (I even bought the Vista upgrade). The Upgrade Assistant let me go directly from XP to Win 7 with little difficulty.
The steps I took were:
1. Backup your hard drive (I would do a full backup of everything if possible but at bare minimum backup you data).
2. Run the Windows 7 upgrade assessment utility.
3. Take care of any issues that the assessment utility flags as critical and review the rest for potential resolution.
4. Buy PCMover Upgrade Assistant.
5. Run the Upgrade Assistant following their instructions to the letter (if you've downloaded the software make sure you go get the PDF instructions).
6. Run Windows 7 upgrade.
7. Take care of any issues that need immediate attention.
8. Install Upgrade Assistant under Windows 7 and complete the process.

From this point you will have go through and check your applications and (as I did) have to re-install those that don't quite work right. I also had a problem with the video driver because there isn't one for this chip set that's compatible with Windows 7 (and Intel doesn't seem interested in creating one). I did find a work around so that's solved. Any problems that I've had or will have can't be attributed to PCMover. PCMover has save me a lot of time and effort and worked as advertised. I would strongly recommend it for people that want to upgrade from XP to Windows 7. ...and from what I can tell will go from any version of XP to any version of Widows 7 (something else that MS doesn't want you to do). :(
On a side note I can't believe that MS is so arrogant that they wouldn't supply and easier path to upgrade from XP to Windows 7. No wonder they're loosing market share. It's obvious with this program that it can be done.

Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional Upgrade from Professional Version 6 Review

Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional Upgrade from Professional Version 6
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Don't take my word for it that's a quote from the title of a recent post excoriating this irritating and increasingly bloated product on Slashdot.
Be warned: Adobe has not learned its lesson, and despite the outcry that followed the release of version 6, this latest release of Acrobat continues Adobe's aggressive trend of intruding into your desktop environment, again, as in version 6 without providing an easy way to undo the damage once its done--in fact, it's now nearly impossible. Like earlier releases, this version of Acrobat adds startup macros and new toolbar buttons to your existing applications and adds menu entries to your desktop "right click" menus. Adobe argues that these are conveniences, but they are entirely unnecessary (for most of us "printing" to Adobe PDF achieves the same result, is much more convenient, and a more natural model), and clutter what for most users is either a too-crowded user interface (for those who don't have the knowledge or patience to customize it) or a carefully tuned one (for those who do). Unlike many well-behaved applications that provide obvious ways of avoiding this kind of intrusive and disruptive behavior (e.g. through a simple checkbox option in a settings dialog), Acrobat's "option" for disabling this behavior, once deeply hidden in the setup process,is now almost completely absent. To disable the "Convert to Adobe PDF" button that mysteriously appears in the Outlook mail editor, for example, one has to be sure to choose "this feature will not be available" from the "Microsoft Outlook" option under "Acrobat PDFMaker" under "Create Adobe PDF". Simply deleting the button using Outlook's toolbar customization feature will not work: it comes right back when the editor is next opened. Similar problems arise in Word, Excel, Visio, Project, and Internet Explorer. And there's simply no way to get rid of the never-used "Convert to Adobe PDF" and "Combine in Acrobat..." entries in that appear in the desktop context menus for files (even if one installs none of the Acrobat PDFMaker features).
For the technically inclined wishing to repair some of the damage that Acrobat 7 does, there are complex but largely effective step by step instructions available on the web, but even the authors of these are driven to despair by version 7: ("Adobe has really pushed the boat out with Acrobat 7 and managed to screw Word royally") .
In short, Acrobat will make a mess of your working environment, there's no way to completely fix it, and even the partial fix is a pain (and not well documented). (This may seem a minor issue, but if every application followed Adobe's reckless example, our working environments would start to look like strip malls, crowded with features screaming for our attention to the point where it is hard to find what we need when we need it. One of the great strengths of the personal computer desktop is that users can configure it in ways that suit their needs; no application should interfere with that.)
Experienced Acrobat users will also notice that this version continues another frustrating trend for Acrobat (and most other Adobe applications): it is yet again slower to launch than the previous version. In fact, on my 2 GHz Pentium 4, it takes longer to launch than the entire Visual Studio .NET development environment, and longer than the boot sequence for Windows XP!
There are other minor problems as well (arbitrary rearrangements of menu and tool bar items, etc.) but these two major flaws are more than bad enough. Unless you really need the latest Acrobat features, you should probably avoid this upgrade. And if the "improvements" in this release are any indication of where Adobe plans to go with future releases, it may be time to start looking elsewhere for a tool for digital document management.
Fortunately, there's no reason at all to upgrade. Version 7 offers no usefully new features, so you can (and should) avoid this one (at all costs).

WebEasy 8 Professional Review

WebEasy 8 Professional
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this software after reading product reviews as I currently use an online WYSIWYG web company that I'm not happy with and I wanted to have more control over my site design. Having now worked with WebEasy Pro 8 over the past two weeks here are my observations:
1. The manual is useless, so unless you're already familiar with graphics programs you will probably find the product frustrating -- I AM graphics savvy and I'm finding I have to dig and dig around the program to achieve what I want (I`m designing from scratch, not using a template). However, if you stick to the templates you'll probably have an easier time of it.
2. When using a Flash video, unless you have it set to looping, it will not freeze on your final frame; it switches to some god-awful image from one of the software's videos. This is a bug in the WebEasy software as this does not happen with a Windows Media File (but that had others issues).
3. The company's email help is slow and WAAAAY longer than their stated time of a 48-hour turnaround (if they answer at all: easy questions are answered promptly, more complicated ones appear to be ignored). It's better to phone BUT they don't publish the number on their website; you have to call their sales department first and then the number is given in their automated answer.
4. There is no easy and immediate way to replicate items from page to page except by copying and pasting. For example, if you create a website header with a website menu, it would be great if you could simply tell the program to repeat the items, including their links, on all pages or selected pages. No can do. I suspect you have to create your own style sheet to do that, which just complicates what really should be an obvious option.
5. The program does not distinguish between website background and page background. This distinction is important: the website background is an image or color which tiles to fill the viewer`s web browser, regardless of size; page background is fixed. So one way of eliminating that annoying box around your webpage is to have the website background and page background the same color BUT this only works in WebEasy if you use solid colors: if you set your background to a gradient or one of their stock patterns, it only fills the webpage: it doesn`t tile. This also means that you can`t create your own cool website background on which your page will sit. So if that is your wish, look elsewhere.
6. Despite their marketing suggestion to the contrary, you CAN NOT embed photo galleries in your webpage. What the program does is create separate webpages of galleries which you must then link to your site by creating a folder in your index. And how do you do that? The manual doesn't tell you and neither does their help file; you'll have to call them and hope they can explain it, or have someone who knows CSS adjust the code for you (which is possible in WebEasy if you know how). Also note that their web gallery is really AWFUL: it looks terrible and all the thumbnails are squished into the same TINY square format which renders them useless and ugly, and many of the thumbnails were corrupted, presenting as pixellated garbage. So if web galleries are your aim, you will need to look elsewhere, like Photoshop or Lightroom or Flash, or even something like Firestarter by Coffee Cup, or look into WebPlus X4 which may have a better web gallery module and the linking code already embedded (I can't speak directly to the latter; I'm simply reiterating what I've read). Note that ALL these web gallery modules and programs create Flash-style galleries that must be linked, not embedded, to your webpage; AND Flash galleries cannot be "read" by search engines. So if you want your pictures to be searchable by title or content, Flash is not an option. Also, the fight between Apple and Adobe over Flash abilities may result in your galleries (or any Flash content) being unreadable on an iPhone or iPad (though in my opinion Apple is unlikely to win this since so many existing websites use Flash modules and Apple may simply lose their customers over the frustration).
7. Another bug in the software is that Jpegs, when reduced in size to around 150 pixels or smaller, sometimes don't present properly when you check the page in your web browser. I found that I had to switch those images to the PNG format to fix the problem.
8. Another bug is that your page size sometimes arbitrarily changes. Meaning, for example, that I set the page size to 1500 pixels long but every once in awhile the program cuts off the bottom. I check my page size, it still says I have 1500 pixels, but I have to reset it to get my pixels back. Not sure if that's going to happen once the site is live. I hope not or I'm going to be seriously, seriously annoyed.
In summary, the program is "buggy," I`m not entirely happy, and the product is certainly not as easy as they make out: you will need to make good use of the Help tabs to get into the deeper details, you will need to play around A LOT before you`ll feel comfortable with the program, and you will have to be savvy enough to work around the bugs if you encounter them.

Microsoft Windows Vista Anytime Upgrade Pack Review

Microsoft Windows Vista Anytime Upgrade Pack
Average Reviews:

I had read all the reviews and decided "What the heck". After all, i use a laptop and want bitlocker and the other security enhancements.
I ordered from Microsoft (I wish I had from amazon as I've a $25 certificate) and installed it according to their directions and recommendations.
Keep in mind I had a 3rd party antivirus security product installed.
When I started the upgrade process, I got a prompt asking if I wanted to get product updates online (recommended) - I said 'yes' to this. Maybe that was why my upgrade was successful.
Note, I own a Gateway MX8739 and it came with its own Anytime Upgrade disc.
The actual upgrade took almost 2 hours and was mostly automatic. Once it got back to the login screen, I entered my name and password as usual. My desktop reappeared normally. I started MS Word 2007 and it re-initialized and had to reboot. I said "no" to that prompt because Windows Update was downloading and installing 30 updates at the same time.
I did have to re-activate, but that went through without a hitch. Vista Ultimate is now the installed version, it's activated, antivirus program's definitions downloaded without fail, Office did its update and my settings remained unchanged, I am very happy.
I'm sorry some people had problems. I almost did not buy because of what has been said. However I did buy, and am glad I did. Hopefully my two cents will help address the balance.

Microsoft Office Standard 2007 UPGRADE Review

Microsoft Office Standard 2007 UPGRADE
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Normally I might wait to install a new software upgrade, but I just got a new laptop and thought it would be best to use Office 2007 with the new Vista operating system. I was wrong.
You would expect that a multi-billion dollar company like Microsoft could put out a powerful and bug-free piece of software. But after a month of using Office 2007, you get the distinct impression that this software is not ready for public release. Microsoft should be ashamed.
I don't know the root cause of my problems, but I have to stress that I am running a clean install of Office 2007 on Vista, so there shouldn't be any software conflicts or issues.
So what are my issues? The list is long:
-- My biggest concern is that MS Word constantly hangs and stalls. It can making editing a document very painful. I suspect the problem is when I put images or Visio diagrams into a document. But that is something the old MS Word was able to do without an issue. Oddly, if I have a colleague open the document and save it out in Word 2003, the problem goes away! What?! It's killing my productivity.
-- When ever I cut and paste from an old document, Word hangs for 15 to 20 seconds. And often the formatting and margins in my new document go haywire. I keep having to spend a ton of time fixing things. This never happened in the old Word. This is another time killer.
-- Every few days, Outlook 2007 starts telling me that it cannot display my email folders. Uh oh! I have to completely restart my computer to see my email again.
-- Outlook 2007 breaks many graphic emails that people send -- they look like a mess. It is because Outlook 2007 does NOT render HTML correctly since it uses the Word engine, not Internet Explorer to display email. I have no idea why Microsoft did this, but they have got to fix it.
-- Many of the issues in the old Word 2003 still haven't been fixed. If you place an image, it can often be hard to get it to appear correctly. Why can't they solve this one?
-- While most Office programs have the new ribbon interface (which I like), some programs like Visio 2007 do not. So you have to remember how to use two interfaces. Couldn't Microsoft find the time and money to update ALL its programs? Give me a break.
-- On a few occassions in Visio 2007, my files have failed to save correctly. At first I thought this must have been my fault, but it's happened to me a few times and can't be a coincidence. A few times I've gotten an error message and lost my work. Ug.
-- Word and Excel 2007 use a completely new file format. So anyone you send a document to has to have 2007 installed (which isn't likely the case). To get around this, you can save it down to a 2003 file format, but then you end up with two files on your hard drive -- one in the new format and one in the old format. What a pain! Also, there definitely seems to be an issue with Office 2007 opening older Office 2003 files. Could be the cause of many of my problems, but there is no way I can avoid using old files. They should have worked harder on compatibility.
There are good things about the new 2007. I do like the new interface design and the new features in Outlook 2007 are amazing for organizing tasks and sharing your calendar.
But I don't think it's fair that Microsoft released a product so full of serious, serious bugs that have cost me hours and hours of extra work. I didn't spend hundreds of dollars on a beta product and don't think the public should have to suffer. Surely they can afford to do better!

Adobe Photoshop CS5 Upgrade Review

Adobe Photoshop CS5 Upgrade

this is much the same as CS4 but with a few new features, but one thing you should know is that most plug-ins currently only work in 32bit,therefore you must start it in 32bit(double click on the PS icon in finder and "get info",then tick the box "open in 32bit").The problem here is that PS CS5 can only access 2gb ram max, unlike 32bit CS4 which can access 4gb ram,so perhaps it would be wise to hold on to your cs4 until all the plug-ins are re-written as 64bit,most will be available in the next 3 months.apart from this its a nice upgrade!

Top new features of Photoshop CS5 and Photoshop CS5 Extended
Intelligent selection technology Photoshop CS5 takes the time and frustration out of making precise image selections and masks, providing you a faster way to extract subjects from their backgrounds and create realistic composites. New intelligent selection technology offers better edge detection and faster, more accurate masking results of complex subjects, like hair. Automatic color decontamination helps you eliminate background color around the edges of a selection, resulting in more seamless compositions when placing extracted subjects on new backgrounds.
Experienced Photoshop users know that the best selections are created by constantly adapting the selection technique for differences in the subject's edges--one method for hair and another for the edge of a building. With Photoshop CS5, you can produce highly accurate masks and selections faster and more simply than before with a set of new adaptive selection-edge modification controls. Smart Radius automatically matches the best selection approach with the subject's changing edge characteristics, and the extra view modes assist you in previewing the quality of your selections. The Refine Radius and Erase Refinements tools customize your masks and selections as you make them. These tools, in combination with the color decontamination settings, help eliminate any residual background color from around the edges of your selections.
Content‐Aware Fill One of the most exciting new features in Photoshop CS5 is the remarkable ability to remove an image element and magically replace it with details that match the lighting, tone, and noise of the surrounding area so that it looks like the content never existed. Now, you can make substantial changes to photo composition quickly and easily, as even large complex subjects can be seamlessly erased.
You can use Content-Aware Fill with the Spot Healing Brush or as an option of the Fill feature to replace content in an active selection. Selecting the Content-Aware setting with the Spot Healing brush changes the way the tool fills in the areas you paint. This retouching approach is designed to account more fully for the structure and detail of the image elements that surround the painted area, providing a near-invisible result when removing unwanted objects. Alternatively, you can select the object to be removed, and then replace the area with synthesized details from the area surrounding the selection, simply by using the Content-Aware option in the Fill dialog box.
HDR Pro for creativity and precision with the next generation of high dynamic range imaging With just a few clicks, you can go beyond the capture capabilities of your camera by combining multiple exposures into a single high dynamic range (HDR) photo that preserves the full tonal range of a scene with high contrast. Photoshop CS5 introduces HDR Pro for more control over the HDR merging process and greater adjustment power over the mapping of tones and the styling of HDR output, resulting in images that range from photorealistic to highly surreal.
HDR Pro offers extended controls, an enhanced dialog box, and improved image processing. New algorithms enable more accurate alignment of source files and automatically deghost any problem areas that occur when trying to merge source photos where subjects have moved during capture. You can even select a source file to be used as the sole reference for any ghosted areas or allow the feature to do this automatically for you.
New tone-mapping tools and adjustment controls give you the power to implement your own HDR vision, producing photos that range in style from fully textured images of high-contrast scenes to wildly hyper-realistic creations. Save your favorite styles as presets and apply them to multiple groups of source files to provide a common look and feel to your HDR photos. And for times when you don't have multiple source files, create the look of an HDR-processed image from a single photo with the new HDR Toning feature that allows you to mimic the tone-mapping results traditionally achieved in high dynamic range photos.
Together with the existing Photomerge feature (which allows for image stitching), the exposure-merging capabilities of HDR Pro can add up to high-bit-depth, 360-degree panoramas ideal for composite photography, video, and beyond.
The Auto Stack Panorama/HDR files option in Adobe Bridge CS5 and the new panelized Mini Bridge groups source files together into stacks for quicker creation of HDR images in Photoshop CS5. You can even start the creation of an HDR file by choosing Tools > Merge To HDR from the Mini Bridge panel inside Photoshop.
State-of-the-art raw-image processing The Adobe Camera Raw 6 plug-in, which ships with Photoshop CS5, now supports more than 275 camera models as it continues to provide you with the industry-leading conversion of raw files. In addition, the utility provides advanced, nondestructive image editing and enhancement for raw files, as well as for other standard formats, including JPEG and TIFF. Now you can remove noise, achieve better quality sharpening, and creatively apply new styles of vignettes and film-like grain.
You can now shoot at higher ISO settings with confidence, because the updated controls in the Adobe Camera Raw 6 plug-in remove the noise common in such high-ISO images (as well as in photos captured with long exposures and pictures from consumer cameras) while still preserving excellent color and detail.
New controls for adding grain and additional post-crop vignetting settings join many creative options already available in this utility, such as the Adjustment Brush and the Graduated Filter. For the first time, you can add grain-like texture to photos as part of your nondestructive editing workflow. Adjust amount, size, and roughness of grain to easily give composites a more natural, seamless appearance by matching levels of grain across all source images--or simply use the feature to make a digital photo look more organic or film-like.
Updated post-crop vignetting options offer more creative control over the corner darkening and lightening process, and your favorite vignette effects can be saved as presets for quick application across multiple files.
Upgraded sharpening options produce clearer photos with fewer artifacts while providing better control over key details, especially when working with high-resolution pictures produced by multi-megapixel cameras.
Extraordinary painting effects With a new Mixer Brush, a Bristle Tips feature, and a new mechanism for blending colors, Photoshop CS5 redefines the way you paint. You can take advantage of more natural and realistic painting effects, making it easy to take your imagery and designs in new artistic directions.
The Mixer Brush lets you define multiple colors on a single tip, and then mix and blend them with the underlying hues on your canvas, achieving creative results that rival traditional painting media. When starting with a photo original, you can use a dry, empty brush to blend the existing colors while at the same time adding a painterly effect to the image. Mixer Brush settings provide extensive control over the wetness of the canvas colors, the load rate that determines amount of paint loaded on the brush, the mixing rate between brush and canvas colors, and whether the brush is refilled, cleaned, or both after each painting stroke.
In conjunction with these new mixing features, Photoshop CS5 incorporates unprecedented control over stroke characteristics of its painting tools with Bristle Tips. Bristle Qualities define key bristle properties such as shape, length, stiffness, thickness, angle, and spacing, which affect how the color is laid on the image as you paint.
The Bristle Brush Preview feature provides a visual representation of these changes, and you can save your tip configurations for future use, allowing you to build a customized collection of Bristle Tips to experiment with when using Photoshop brush tools.
Puppet Warp Puppet Warp gives you more freedom when pushing and pulling elements within an image. The feature lets you recompose an image to make it more appealing, or to fit a specific layout, by allowing the precise repositioning of any element within a Photoshop document, or selection, by simply clicking and dragging. After you reposition an object, Photoshop adjusts the rest of the image to account for the shifted pixels.
After choosing Edit > Puppet Warp, click on your image to drop pins establishing anchor points where you want image parts not to move, and handles that you can use for warping. Then drag any of the pins to reposition the picture elements. Use Puppet Warp to swing a raised arm to a person's side, warp and stretch text to create new effects, or reposition intrusive objects in a photo to create a more pleasing composition.
Automated lens correction The Lens Correction features in Photoshop CS5 create better quality captures by removing or correcting the three most common lens-based errors: geometric distortion, chromatic aberration, and vignetting. This means you can use a wider range of lenses with the confidence of producing images of the highest quality. With the aid of the Adobe Lens Profile Creator (available separately as a free download from labs.adobe.com) you can produce custom profiles characterizing the optical aberrations of your camera lenses. When installed and selected in the Lens Correction filter in Photoshop CS5, the profile automatically removes or corrects the three types of distortion.
The Lens Correction filter in Photoshop CS5 is redesigned to include manual adjustment controls under the Custom tab, and settings for locating and applying custom Lens Correction Profiles (LCP files) under a new Auto Correction tab. Installed profiles that match your camera and lens combination are used to apply precise distortion corrections to your photos. Suitable profiles can be located easily based on the EXIF data automatically recorded with the image, and if a suitable profile is not present in the Lens Correction filter, then with a single click within the dialog box, you can search online for the correct profile to meet your needs.
Individual error types can be selected in the filter's settings, as can options for handling any transparent areas that surround the corrected image.
User-inspired productivity enhancements Photoshop CS5 helps boost productivity and creativity throughout the editing workflow with dozens of enhancements inspired by Photoshop users. Some of these include:

Streamlined creative reviews through integration with Adobe CS ReviewCollaborate with colleagues and seek client comment quickly and easily with Adobe CS Review, a new CS Live online service* designed to simplify and accelerate the design review process.
With CS Review, you can avoid the hassles of large email attachments, logon problems with FTP servers, and time-consuming next-day air deliveries usually associated with client reviews by instead initiating a secure, shared review. Comments are displayed in near-real time and in context, providing convenient feedback on your images and designs. You can access the CS Review service from within Photoshop CS5.
Faster performance with cross-platform native 64-bit support Tight deadlines and large file sizes make performance a high priority for many Photoshop users. Photoshop CS5 and Photoshop CS5 Extended deliver cross-platform 64-bit support, allowing you to perform day-to-day imaging tasks up to 10 times faster. Video and photo professionals, especially, benefit from the extra performance, as gains are even greater if you regularly work with very large files, where processing can be up to ten times faster when you take advantage of higher addressable RAM amounts--limited only by what your hardware accommodates.
To help you tweak the performance of your setup, Photoshop CS5 lets you adjust history, tile, and cache controls in combination.
Greater access to key resources via flexible custom panels Photoshop CS5 offers easy ways to integrate and extend your workspace with customized panels. With the aid of the Configurator 2.0 panel utility (available separately as a download from labs.adobe.com) you can produce your own panels, bringing together your most used tools and menu selections and incorporating your favorite web feeds or video tutorials.
Stay connected to the greater Photoshop community and all facets of your digital life directly from within Photoshop CS5 by using panels you create or those produced and distributed by other users. You can access anything that lives on the web--favorite blogs, video content, even your email--with these integrated panels. You can even expand content beyond a panel's standard viewing area when you need a magnified view.
Easier interface management with Live Workspaces and Workspace Switcher Creating dedicated, task-specific workspaces that mimic your individual workflow increases productivity and efficiency by hiding the features you don't use and exposing the ones you do. New Live Workspaces auto-save any changes you make to a task-specific workspace, so that if you switch to a different workspace and then back again during an editing session, your panels remain exactly where you left them. The number of entries displayed in the collapsible Workspace Switcher can be altered, and the position of each workspace can be rearranged. This provides quicker navigation between frequently used setups.
Superior black-and-white conversion Photoshop CS5 continues to support the tradition of producing finely crafted monochrome photos with the inclusion of new ways to explore an endless variety of black-and-white looks. You can use the integrated Lab Black & White Technique action, located in the Default Actions group of the Actions panel, for an easy and interactive way to convert color images. Create gorgeous HDR black-and-whites with greater ease and speed by taking advantage of the new and updated features in HDR Pro. Take your monochrome creations in new directions with conversion presets in the Black & White panel.
