Starry Night Pro 5.0 Astronomy Software Win/Mac Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I had to jump in and write a review of this product (my first ever on Amazon!) after reading some of the comments on the porduct page. Not sure what happened in the cases of Steve S. and D. Frank but personally I have nothing but good things to say both about the software and the customer service I received.
On the software side, I found that the robust "pro level" functionality not only gave me what I was looking for in terms of features and tools but was also surprisingly easy to use from an interface perspective (not always the case with these sort of feature-rich products). The multimedia tours were a hit with my kids (who have since learned to use the more advanced tools better that me!) and some of the viewing modules (e.g. the horizon panoramas) are so amazing that after using them I think I have finally rid myself of my guilt for not pursuing that astronomy PhD. I did think the joystick feature is still a bit klunky, but overall this is a really well designed and thoughtfully made piece of software.
In terms of customer service, since I have had minimal software issues it has not really come up. The one time I did send an inquiry it was answered promptly and effectively (turned out the minor problem I was experiencing was caused by an OS level setting that I had turned on for another piece of software -- a problem that I was impressed they were able to diagnose).
In summary - this is a great product and a great company. A truly perfect xmas gift for your seriosu astronomy buff pals.

My First Amazing World Explorer 2.0 Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)My son was 4 when he tackled this program. He'd was glued and wouldn't want to budge until he had completely filled his passport! You are given a huge map of the world, complete with landscape and landmarks , continents, countries and major cities. You can even use the magnifying glass and zoom in on an area for more information. For the "passport game" you are to search the map for any boats or planes that will take you from one country to another. Click on the plane, for example, and you will be told where you are travelling to and the flight time. For each journey you take, a visa will be stamped in your passport. Fill your passport with all 19(!) journeys and you will earn the title WORLD EXPLORER and get a certificate! In another game, you must search the map for flora, fauna, landmarks, etc. to fill a sticker book. There's also treasure hunt game and a snap game. I think my son was a little young to appreciate all the information that was available, but he felt challenged to finish the passport or sticker book by the narrator's positive feedback and encouragement. Older children will enjoy the chance to explore what looks interesting to them (graphics were DK quality and the clickables were great fun!) at their own pace.

The Complete National Geographic 110 Years Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)This is a great piece of work. All articles, pictures, maps of 110 years.
However, don't get the CD-ROM version. 31 CDs is too much to handle. If you do a search for a particular topic, it comes up with articles in 10 different CDs. Then you have to flip CDs in and out. I bought this for my father and it is a huge pain; brings back the days of flipping floppies.
Instead, get the DVD-ROM version. Doesn't look like Amazon sells it (at least right now), It's a lot more useful. There's only 3 DVDs to flip.

Redshift 4 Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)After using Redshift 3 which is excellent, and smooth running. I found Redshift 4 a big dissapointment. Main reasons is its sluggish speed. It sometimes crashes especially if you do not change back to disk 1 from disk 2 immediately. The user interface is more difficult than Redshift 3 , and unlike R3 appears to have NO keyboard commands or control. I noticed some things missing, like the 3d orbital view windows as with R3. No improvements in graphics, Open GL option would have improved and speeded up graphics. Other than the extra Tycho2 and Hubble information Redshift 4 is a BIG let down. Should have named it Redshift 2.5! I will stick to Redshift 3.

My Amazing Human Body Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I bought this cd from Scholastic for over $15 and it doesn't work on newer computers. My Amazing Human Body has a copyright of 1997. When I tried to install it on my Windows XP, I got a message that it might not work because this cd is for Windows 95. The computer was right, it didn't work on Windows XP. The outside of the package said it should work on Windows XP, but it sure doesn't work. What a waste of money!!
