(More customer reviews)It's interesting...a few years ago, Encarta was king in terms of user interface, speed, and the atlas (content was/is pretty decent) while Britannica reigned supreme in terms of content, but the software was lousy. Britannica has since made great strides while Encarta seems to be slowing down (could this be the MS bloat-ware curse?). Encarta still wins on UI, but Britannica really is much improved - the UI is better, you can print whole articles, and the brainstormer feature is kind of interesting. But Britannica still needs work. It's hard to describe - it's just slow and twitchy at times - but not so much that it isn't useful. The atlas is still weak compared to Encarta, but that's not why we buy Britannica. Oh, and it runs well on Mac OS X. One final thought for Britannica - the online Britannica UI is actually slicker and slightly more intuitive than the software. Even so, a very good buy overall.
4/1/09 UPDATE: Well, Britannica wins. Microsoft is killing Encarta thanks to Wikipedia - or at least that is what is being said. That pretty much leaves Britannica as the king of the hill, though not due to it's having fought it's way there. The hill being scholarly, well researched, well written computer-based encyclopedia. Britannica is what it is, but Microsoft's electronic execution was pretty much always better. Wikipedia is in a different category. I confess I use it a lot, but for purely informational purposes. Had I to do research for work, I don't think it's reliable enough yet, and the writing isn't there. I wonder where the future lies. Encarta had A LOT going for it: good writing, graphics, lots of historical documents...it really was excellent. Perhaps someone will buy the content and continue it. Maybe this is a chance for World Book to regain some lost ground? In the mean time, Britannica can further improve it's position by bringing the DRAMATICALLY SUPERIOR design and user interface of it's web-based service to it's computer-based product.
