(More customer reviews)Were you one of those children who dreamed of having his own Encyclopedia Britannica at home? I was. Didn't achieve that until I was well into adulthood - and then not many years after acquiring the printed set, EB started publishing electronically.
Sure, there isn't much, if anything, today that you can't find on the internet. Still for a few dollars, having the Encyclopedia Britannica on your local computer is still a treat.
The articles are generally more acceptable as sources as opposed to Wikipedia or many other web sources. As a browser, it is still fun to randomly explore the 87,500 articles they claim to have. A six-month subscription Britannica Online is also included.
The interface is somewhat improved over past years, but performance even on a fast computer is still a little sluggish. The maps in the Atlas portion aren't very good, but they are handy for quick reference when you need a quick bit on population density or the depths at various points in the ocean. (You'll also need your reading glasses for many of them: they are small and fixed size.) The timelines are a lot of fun for adults and children alike. You pick a subject and then select the highlights shown along a timeline for a more detailed description, such as the domestication of the horse. I wish they had more timelines.
They include a lot of gimmicks, such as "multimedia", photos and video from stock libraries, much of which the adult reader may remember from their childhoods.
There's a workspace where budding scholars can assemble notes and citations to their source material.
There is a mind mapping program called PersonalBrain which I have never particularly cared for, but others may find useful.
Finally there's the Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary which is well done and easily worth the price of the entire DVD.
Overall, this is an excellent value. The fact thirsty adult and the nurturing parent alike will find this package more than worthwhile.
