(More customer reviews)I've been a McAfee user for over a decade. Every time my subscription comes up for renewal, I really question whether it is worth sticking with them. My begrudging renewals are more laziness than informed decision-making.
The Good -
- easy to load (download from internet; Amazon actually ships you an activation code in a CD box)
- always on
- will send you relentless emails reminding you of when your subscription is about to expire
- the 2011 virus scans is fast, and seems faster than in the past
The Bad -
- nonexistent customer service (more on that below re: viruses)
- The user interface really is not (i) intuitive nor (ii) very informative.
- for "loyal" customers like myself, the renewal terms are outrageously more expensive than other options (such as buying this package like I did for 20 bucks on Amazon instead of renewing directly with McAfee).
- viruses still get through (more below).
Re: Viruses. If I(or one of of my teenagers) stupidly clicks a link to download a virus, shame on us, it will go through. McAfee can't save us from ourselves; I get that. I would however like a major warning pop up or a download interruption for links to known viruses.
I have spent several weekends in the past year undoing damage on my McAfee-protected computer from what I later find to be major known viruses. Here's my problem with McAfee: I have to go to other sites, freebie sites, to find a step-by-step fix to the virus. This just does not exist on McAfee's worthless website, and it should. IF these fixes are on McAfee's site, they are extremely difficult to find. A special self-help section on the McAfee website (and not buried in a forum somewhere)would go a long way toward better customer service. McAfee does offer a fee-based phone call consultation to debug your virus-laden computer. McAfee, I can get this info FREE on other sites, why can't you provide the same information on your site?
The IT guys at my office all use and recommend freebie ware from the internet to protect their personal computers. McAfee, I'm wondering why I shouldn't do the same, the next time I get a renewal notice from you.
